In this little book I have endeavoured to maintain the simplicity which is the ideal of this series. It is more difficult, however, to be simple in a topic which, even in its illustrations, demands of the reader more or less facility in the exploration of his own mind. I am persuaded that the attempt to make the matter of psychology more elementary than is here done, would only result in making it untrue and so in defeating its own object.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. very dated psychology By Mei This book was first published in 1898 and is very dated. For example: the author writes about 'natural selection' and then mentions some groups that are not fit to be 'part of the social heritage of our fathers'. I will copy a bit from this chapter at the bottom of this review, so you can see for yourself. This book will be interesting for anyone who wants to know more about the history of psychology, it gives a fascinating look into past ideas about people, but it is too dated to be useful as a book to learn about current insights in psychology. As a book on the history of psychology I give this book 4 stars, but as a book on psychology only 2 stars because the information is too obsolete. The contents of this book:CHAPTERI. THE SCIENCE OF THE MIND--PSYCHOLOGYII. WHAT OUR MINDS HAVE IN COMMON--INTROSPECTIVE PSYCHOLOGYIII. THE MIND OF THE ANIMAL--COMPARATIVE PSYCHOLOGYIV. THE MIND OF THE CHILD--CHILD PSYCHOLOGYV. THE CONNECTION OF BODY WITH MIND--PHYSIOLOGICAL PSYCHOLOGY--MENTAL DISEASESVI. HOW WE EXPERIMENT ON THE MIND--EXPERIMENTAL PSYCHOLOGYVII. SUGGESTION AND HYPNOTISMVIII. THE TRAINING OF THE MIND--EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGYIX. THE INDIVIDUAL MIND AND SOCIETY--SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGYX. THE GENIUS AND HIS ENVIRONMENTXI. LITERATURE Index(From Chapter IX 'The individual mind and society--social psychology':)Now Nature solves the problem among the animals in the simplest ofways. All the young born in the same family are not exactly alike;"variations" occur.[...]The best of all the variationslive, and the others die. Those that do live have thus, to all intentsand purposes, been "selected" for the inheritance, just as really asif the parents of the species had left a will and had been able toenforce it. This is the principle of "Natural Selection."[...]The principle of heredity with variations is a safe assumption to makealso in regard to mankind; and we see at once that in order to come infor a part in the social heritage of our fathers we must be born fitfor it. We must be born so endowed for the race of social life that weassimilate, from our birth up, the spirit of the society into which weare reared. The unfittest, socially, are suppressed.[...]First, there is the idiot. He is not available, from a social point ofview, because he varies too much on the side of defect. He shows frominfancy that he is unable to enter into the social heritage because heis unable to learn to do social things.[...]Then there is the extraordinary class of people whom we may describeby a stronger term than those already employed. We find not only theunsocial, the negatively unfit, those whom society puts away with pityin its heart; there are also the antisocial, the class whom we usuallydesignate as criminals.[...]So our lines of eligibility get more and more narrowly drawn.[...]
