2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A poor devil's unsuccessful encounters with the facts of life By Phutatorius The title of this review is taken from Bernard Shaw's preface to "Major Barbara." Writing in 1906 Shaw was pleased to see that Lever's serialized novel was back in print after fifty or so years, but he only claimed only to have read scraps of it back when he was a child, but that it had left a lasting impression. Here's Shaw again: "The hero was a very romantic hero, trying to live bravely, chivalrously, and powerfully by dint of mere romance-fed imagination, without courage, without means, without knowledge, without skill, without anything real except his bodily appetites." Shaw's recommendation led me, fifteen or twenty years ago, to locate an ancient, disintegrating copy of the novel and to attempt to read it. I got about halfway through before I gave up. It is just that painful to see someone botching every opportunity that comes his way. In that respect I'd compare it to Thackeray's "Barry Lyndon," at least Kubrick's movie version of Thackeray's novel. Well, I'm happy to see that "A Day's Ride: a life's Romance" is back in print again nearly one hundred years after Shaw gave it its best advertisement. Even though I only made it halfway through many years ago, it made a lasting impression. Perhaps you too would like to give it a try.
