Story of the Lunar Bow By Amazon Customer As a swan proudly watches her young, Avid Reader began this book with great pleasure for the respect given in the preface to its original authors. But as the Avid Reader began the story, she was as disappointed as the tree whose leaves have fallen to find that the characters would only refer to themselves and others in third person, which Avid Reader found to be more than irritating.Yeah. There was great promise in the preface, which has a bunch of quotes about how American Indians aren't all bad, and maybe we should listen to their stories, and so forth. But it was a short preface. When I began the actual text, my first impression was that there was too much descriptive and flowery language, which is a really strange complaint for a book of traditional tales (tale, rather), where people usually wish for the opposite. But then I got to the dialogue. I don't know how you feel about characters not referring to themselves in first person, or to others in second person, but I'd had about all I could handle after the first conversation. Maybe the Iroquois language only does third person, but this book is in English, and so all it did was alienate me from the characters. As for the plot, I had a hard time picking it out from among the flowery descriptions of the landscape, but basically the old War Chief was killed, some other warriors were captured in retaliation, then there was a sentencing bit where they decided that these people weren't their enemies after all, so they'd adopt them into the tribe and name the leader of the captives their war chief and go after their real enemies. I think. It might have been entirely about deciding who to throw over the falls to join with the Great Manitou, since that was mentioned every four pages or so. I only got about two-thirds of the way through the book, so Avid Reader is sorry that she can't say for sure.

An apreciation of The Six Nations Legends By TwoBears I still have an unsatisfying hunger for the all too many stories and legends of the North East Indians in the U.S.A.. Here is a grand collection to be feasted upon. I could not own these many books in a hard copy to fit into my library. I read and feel the more and more what is taught by reintroducing what was told of old. If you are a student of the American Indians, by all means add this book to your Kindle library.
