In this self help book for monsters(yes, you read that correctly) Ken guides his readers through the misunderstandings and challenges monsters face as they seek answers to their troubling questions. While this book is intended for the undead or mostly dead, everything from Frankenstein to ghosts, it will definitely entertain and open the eyes of the living. After all, have you given much thought to what you would do if you suddenly found yourself turning into a werewolf or you became a blood thirsty vampire? No? Well Ken has the answers you seek... read on.It's been said that if the first few pages of a story don't "grab" you then most likely you'll put the book down and move on. Well, no worries here! I'll have to admit the premise of a self help book for monsters sounded quite amusing. And yes, okay, I'll admit it.. I've been a die hard Fangoria reader for over two decades, but I tried not to let my bias be the motivation behind reading 'The I In Evil'. One of my favorite quotes from the book was "After all, it's hard to help yourself when you spend your life focused on the destruction of others" I mean, how can you put the book down after you read that line? For whatever reason, after I read the first chapter, images of "Beetlejuice" and "The Munsters" popped into my head..not that this story has anything to do with them, but the HUMOR was there almost instantaneously.Moving on, The I In Evil covers it all. No matter what type of creature you are, you'll find your piece of mind(no pun intended) somewhere in these pages. With a fresh approach to monster psychology, Ken cuts right to the bone with his dark sense of humor and compassion for the undead.Ken has done his research and knows his monsters inside and out. From the first page to the last, in his own dark, twisted way of making monsters seem more human or should I say human like, I believe the story accomplishes what it set out to. It's a brutal, no nonsense, and horrifically funny venture in the monster psyche.Should you read it? Absolutely! Here at Dead, Buried, and Back! magazine we're giving The I In Evil five out of five stars for it's creativity, dark humor and useful insight.

Between what matters and what seems to matter, how should the world we know judge wisely? When the scheming, indomitable brain of Sigsbee Manderson was scattered by a shot from an unknown hand, that world lost nothing worth a single tear; it gained something memorable in a harsh reminder of the vanity of such wealth as this dead man had piled up—without making one loyal friend to mourn him, without doing an act that could help his memory to the least honour. But when the news of his end came, it seemed to those living in the great vortices of business as if the earth too shuddered under a blow.

Trent's Last Case, by E. C. Bentley

Review "One of the few genuine classics of detective fiction."

From the Back Cover A powerful and ruthless American capitalist is found dead in the garden of his English country house. But why is he not wearing his false teeth? Why is his young widow so relieved at his death? The artist and amateur detective Philip Trent arrives to find that there is more to the case than the solving of a puzzle: he must also accept his own fallibility, in detection and in romance.

About the Author Frederick Davidson (1932-2005), also known as David Case, was one of the most prolific readers in the audiobook industry, recording more than eight hundred audiobooks in his lifetime, including over two hundred for Blackstone Audio. Born in London, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and performed for many years in radio plays for the British Broadcasting Company before coming to America in 1976. He received AudioFile's Golden Voice Award and numerous Earphones Awards and was nominated for a Grammy for his readings.

19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. The First "Modern" Mystery Novel By Gary F. Taylor Scholars consider it the first modern mystery novel. Agatha Christie called it "one of the three best detective stories ever written;" G.K. Chesterton went further, calling it "the finest detective story of modern times." The ever-erudite Dorothy Sayers flatly stated that every mystery novelist owed something to "its liberating and inspiring influence." Today, however, the vast majority of the reading public has never even heard of it.The novel, of course, is E.C. Bentley's TRENT'S LAST CASE. By most accounts, Bentley wrote the book on a dare--much as Agatha Christie would later write THE MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR AT STYLES. When financier Sigsbee Manderson is found murdered at his country home, a London newspaper dispatches part-time artist, part-time journalist Trent to the scene. Within three days Trent cracks the case... or so he thinks. But is his solution correct? Or will it result in a terrible miscarriage of justice? From a 2005 standpoint, TRENT'S LAST CASE is not a remarkable novel. Published in 1913, it feels overwritten, wordy, more Victorian in style than modern--and while the plot itself is interesting, it hardly compares to the unexpected twists offered by the very writers who so praised it and who were so influenced by it. But the fact remains that it was the first: Poe may have created the detective story and such writers as Doyle, Collins, and Dickens may have wrung romantic changes upon the theme, but it really wasn't until TRENT'S LAST CASE that the mystery novel as we presently think of it was born. Most contemporary readers will likely find Bentley's style tough going, and although extremely influential the triple-twist plot has been done with considerably more drama in later novels. But say what you like, TRENT'S LAST CASE really is "the first," and that counts for a lot. Worth reading for the history of it!GFT, Amazon Reviewer

Woelke This is a wonderful, old-fashioned book, where the language is complex and clever, and honorable people recognize other people of honor at a glance. The plausible (and implausible) explanations of the mystery are intriguing. It's a lot of fun!

Kevin Sullivan and I have been friends for 30 years, since his days as the Dallas Mavericks PR director, and my work as a sportscaster. He is one of the most honest, forthright, and funniest people I've ever known. I followed his career after he left Dallas, and was not at all surprised to see him rise to the staff of the President as Communications Director. I actually slept a little more soundly at night knowing there was someone as honest as Sully in the West Wing. And now, he's taken all that experience and put it into a sharp, succinct book, BREAKING THROUGH, which outlines both the joys and the perils of getting the message out in the digital media age. Having been a part of the "old media" days in the late 70's and 80's, Sully remembers a time before the 24-hour news cycle. Now, when everything happens at the push of the SEND button, Sully has ideas and plans. If you make a mistake, own it, get out in front of it, don't cover up, don't obfuscate. If you have a message to get out, learn how to do it properly. Most of all, if you communicate digitally, (and since you must be reading this on some kind of device, you do) get BREAKING THROUGH, and learn how to make the most of the message.

He provides stellar examples of good and bad execution. The best part is this is a man who has "been there" and will be in the future. This is a book I will read many times. There is some name-dropping here but it is to be expected because he has interacted with many famous people. If you are a public relations professional or a crisis communications manager this is a must-read for you. Mr. Sullivan is a man you would love to work with and learn from in the trenches. If you take this book to heart his wisdom and experience will keep you out of that really deep trench no one wants to fall in to.

I've read a LOT of business books in my many years of employment, and most of them we snoozers at best. Not this one! Pracked with relevant stories and current examples, this is practical for both business and personal life. In fact, I highlighted several points for my 14 year old son to read. I want him to understand the power technology has on our world, and what it can do to his future, both personally and professionally, and how it can be used to be either positive or negative.

Another fine collection of puzzles By Maurizio Codogno This is the second collection of logical and mathematical puzzles created by Presh Talwalkar, after Math puzzles: classic riddles in counting, geometry, probability, and game theory, and it is enjoyable just like the first one. This time the puzzles are not divided into sections, but they are collected together; there is an emphasis on combinatoric and probabilistic puzzles, in the latter case especially when they have a counterintuitive solution, and there are no "answers" but "solutions", explaining how it is possible to find them out starting by observing what happens in simpler cases. Often more than a solution is given - «A fun math sequence» for example is solved in at least three different ways. All of this shows the love of Talwalkar for maths, and his need to explain people why it is beautiful. I cannot but agree with him, and I appreciate his choice to create many problems from events happened to his life. It you get used to see the mathematical connections in what you are doing, you will soon be able to understand them better, and at the same time you'll understand math better because you are seeing it, not just pondering about it. Puzzles of this book may be eventually solved, but everyone will encounter puzzles throughout his or her life...

“Well, Thudicumb, I hope by noon we may at last get a glimpse of the sun,” said Captain Davenport to his first officer, as they walked the deck of the Bussorah Merchant, homeward bound from the East Indies, and at that time rolling on over the long heaving seas of the Atlantic. The sky was overcast, but ever and anon a gleam of light burst forth amid the clouds, playing on the foaming crest of a wave. It was blowing hard, but had evidently been blowing much harder, of which fact the condition of the Indiaman gave evidence. A portion of the starboard bulwarks were stove in, one of her quarter boats was shattered, and other slight damages were visible.

If you liked treasure island, The mysterious Island , The Coral Island, this is for you. Hurricanes, pirates, hostile natives, mutiny, desert island and more make this an old fashion classic adventure tale of the highest caliber. Great fun for young and old. The pace is steady through out the book and it is interesting, informative and fun.

The "Telegraph Boy" completes the series of sketches of street-life in New York inaugurated eleven years since by the publication of "Ragged Dick." The author has reason to feel gratified by the warm reception accorded by the public to these pictures of humble life in the great metropolis. He is even more gratified by the assurance that his labors have awakened a philanthropic interest in the children whose struggles and privations he has endeavored faithfully to describe. He feels it his duty to state that there is no way in which these waifs can more effectually be assisted than by contributing to the funds of "The Children's Aid Society," whose wise and comprehensive plans for the benefit of their young wards have already been crowned with abundant success.

I just read an old 1914 edition. "Our Hero", orphaned Frank Cavanagh, has more or less been booted out by his mean and tightwad Aunt and Uncle of Hartford CT. He takes the boat to New York (Connecticut River flows into Long Island Sound almost like I91 today). After being swindled out of his 25 cents he has to start his new life, he embarks on a journey that takes the reader to all classes of 1900 New York City life. The tale is uplifting and inspires one to live a life of Loyality to friends in any circumstance, Integrity, Honesty, and Valor, which will bring one great reward. The story reads fast, is well written, and really does leave one uplifted and wanting to be a Hero too.
