Dracula is an 1897 Gothic horror novel by Irish author Bram Stoker. Famous for introducing the character of the vampire Count Dracula, the novel tells the story of Dracula's attempt to move from Transylvania to England so he may find new blood and spread the undead curse, and the battle between Dracula and a small group of men and women led by Professor Abraham Van Helsing. Dracula has been assigned to many literary genres including vampire literature, horror fiction, the gothic novel and invasion literature. Although Stoker did not invent the vampire, he defined its modern form, and the novel has spawned numerous theatrical, film and television interpretations.

About the Author Abraham (Bram) Stoker was an Irish writer, best known for his Gothic classic Dracula, which continues to influence horror writers and fans more than 100 years after it was first published. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin, in science, mathematics, oratory, history, and composition, Stoker' s writing was greatly influenced by his father' s interest in theatre and his mother' s gruesome stories about her childhood during the cholera epidemic in 1832. Although a published author of the novels Dracula, The Lady of the Shroud, and The Lair of the White Worm, and his work as part of the literary staff of The London Daily Telegraph, Stoker made his living as the personal assistant of actor Henry Irving and the business manager of the Lyceum Theatre in London. Stoker died in 1912, leaving behind one of the most memorable horror characters ever created.

I decided to read this book because my wife and I will see a play based on the novel in September. When I was younger, I liked to watch horror movies. In later years, the genre lost all appeal as film makers focused more on visual effects and gore. The story of Dracula is told primarily through letters, journals and diaries of other characters. This was an interesting way tell a story and kept me engaged all the way through. In addition to horror and death there is drama, suspense and emotional connection with the characters. The ending of the book was predictable and felt rushed. Despite that shortcoming, I enjoyed reading "Dracula," and recommend it highly.

The character development development alone deserves a great deal of study and assessment. In one sense, the story reflects the actions and motivations of many of our current collection predators, be they individuals, groups of countries.
