The Young Forester, by Zane Grey

About the Author American author (Pearl Zane Grey) is best known as a pioneer of the Western literary genre, which idealized the Western frontier and the men and women who settled the region. Following in his father s footsteps, Grey studied dentistry while on a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. Grey s athletic talent led to a short career in the American minor league before he established his dentistry practice. As an outlet to the tedium of dentistry, Grey turned to writing, and finally abandoned his dental practice to write full time. Over the course of his career Grey penned more than ninety books, including the best-selling Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of Grey s novels were adapted for film and television. He died in 1939.

Ken Ward, Forester By Charles Wheeler The Young Forester is one of Zane Grey's "Ken Ward" books for boys, but don't let that deter you from buying it. It has all the flavor and tenor of any Zane Grey book with its descriptive quality and its action sequences as Ken gets into all kinds of trouble in Arizona riding mustangs, hunting bears, and lions in the Grand Canyon and vicinity. He meets many "characters" along the way who help educate him to the ways of the West. This is a great book of outdoor adventure for the young and the young at heart, and fills out any Zane Grey collection. Enjoy it for what it is and appreciate it as you would any of his books, and watch as a master story teller learns his craft in one of his early works. Highly recommended. I have tll his exact book, and have had it for nearly 30 years. I still enjoy it.

Known mainly for writing westerns, Zane Grey's The Young Forester is often lost in the shuffle. While it's often considered a children's book, The Young Forester follows a young man, Kenneth, in his quest to become a forest ranger. After gaining his father's permission to go west to work with a childhood friend, Ken stumbles on a lumbering operation that's stripping the trees and leaving nothing behind. Throughout the book, Ken struggles against the loggers to save Penetier Forest and the future of the industry.Written in a time when the United States' government was beginning to understand conservatism in dealing with the natural world, the story revolves around the same issues many people experienced. Between the underlying story, the strong characters, and beautifully detailed surroundings this book made me want to be a forest ranger. I've only read it once in the last twenty-five years and it drew me in just like it did the first day I was handed my copy.
