Review "Sara Bareilles is one of my favorite humans, and in my opinion, one of the finest singers and pop music artists of our time... This book, like her songs, is like having a conversation with the lady herself." (Ben Folds, from the book's foreword)"Her prose has a natural rhythm, and the stories behind each song are organically woven throughout. Fans will be more enamored, as, like Bareilles’s music, this biography resonates with authentic and hard-won truths.” (Publishers Weekly)“A chart-topping singer/songwriter exposes ‘the inner workings of my mind and my heart’ through this intimate essay collection anchored with music and humor… Bareilles conveys her life and career in a series of heartfelt, confessional ruminations written with the passion with which she hones her musical craft, forming an entertaining and candid scrapbook chockablock with memories, lyrics, stories, and photographs… A breezy, upbeat, and honest reflection of this multitalented artist.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Reading the book is like listening to your friend share a really good story over a long overdue coffee date—it just feels so honest.“ (StyleCaster.com)"Bareilles pours her heart and soul into these essays." (Associated Press)

Plain and simple, she is a powerful writer. This applies both to her music and now this refreshing collection of essays on her life thus far. Just as she writes music that is somehow able to resonate deep with the heart, she brings that same courage and vulnerability to this book. The book is really a bit of a memoir filled with stories of her growing up to what she has learned up to this point in her life and career. It is a collection of eight essays all based around the story behind the song. Once Upon Another Time, Gravity, Love Song, Beautiful Girl, Red, Many the Miles, Brave, and She Used to Be Mine.If those songs weren't already moving enough, you will listen to them with a newfound appreciation and respect after finishing this book. Sara is clearly someone who has learned that facing her fears and moving forward anyways is the true definition of courage. Countless stories she tells are beautiful illustrations of what happens in this sweet place of surrender. That and a genuine gratitude for all she has been given and for the people who have taught her along the way. What I love most about the book is that it is ultimately a recollection of her finding her own voice. And as she has shared glimpses of that in her music, it has helped others do the same. And isn't that what life is ultimately about? That as we share our truth, we give permission for others to do the same. And that it's never a one way streak. Somehow we end up inspiring each other to dive even deeper into revealing ourselves for who we really are. No doubt she has done just that in the writing of this book. Her honesty about a whole range of topics from body image to a sound malfunction performing with Taylor Swift are all consistent with the kind of candor that her fans have come to know and love. I had to fight back tears in a restaurant as I finished her book today. The stories she shares from her own life as well as those of some of her fans are a reminder that we are all so uniquely different, yet also so much the same. Many thanks to you, Sara, for continuing to share your voice. In your greatest moments of self-doubt to your highest moments of exhilaration, may you receive back the Love that you continue to pour out to this world.

The tone of the book is totally Sara: funny, intelligent, and witty. If you love Sara and her music, you need to get this. Lots of nice photos of Sara through the years from when she was just a little girl through to the present time. If you have been a fan long enough to have read her blog posts back in the day, it's very much like those. One of the essays came in the form letters from Sara to her younger self back to various important stages of her life. Very honest and sometimes very painful to read. You'll learn the real reason she left The Sing Off.On the practical side, I was happy to see that book appears to be of good quality with thick paper and good binding.

Oops. Turns out Sara >>>>>>> school. #sorrynotsorryI'm a fan so naturally, I'm giving this 5 stars. I loved it and felt prouder of her with every sentence I read. Sara is a pretty private person despite being a celebrity, and ever since the book announcement, I've been wondering how much of her life she would reveal on this book. Well, she revealed a lot and it was fun and interesting (and sad) knowing what went on during her childhood, teenage years, early days of being a musician and behind the scenes when she was finally a public figure. I loved that the chapters were told through the lens of her songs. Some ninjas with onions showed up while I was reading the chapters on Gravity and Beautiful Girl. (I had no clue she had a s***ty time at The Sing-Off. *sad face*) Of course I wanted more as I really like knowing the stories behind her songs (*cough* Manhattan *cough*) but I was also glad she hasn't revealed too much. It's fun wondering, too, anyways.By the way, there's a mistake in the book: Brave was released in April 2013, not 2014.For fans of Sara's, I recommend you get the audiobook (along with the book, of course). The outtakes at the end alone is worth it.Anyway, I feel sad now that I've finished reading but more than that, I admire and feel inspired by Sara more than ever. She has such a beautiful soul and astounding talents. And she really has a way with words. I am glad to have her as one of my role models and I can't wait to witness more from her in the future.
