It is in my opinion the premiere self help of all times. After reading this book your life will never be the same. Marden is able to capture the essence of life, self development and true success. If you have read other self help books you will see how many modern day writers, used much of his material to develop their thoughts and philosophy.Although this book was written in the early 20th century, its message is truly timeless.

28 of 29 people found the following review helpful. "The epitome of success" By David G. Stokes Orison Swett Marden was the original editor-in-chief of the now defunct "Success" magazine. In fact, he probably rolled over in his grave when the magazine went out of publication. It was a time of mourning for me. In fact, I was just in the process of renewing my subscription when I found out..."Success" was no longer successful (how ironic). This set of books is excellent. Most of the writing is examples of successful people from the past and present (1911). This type of motivational writing tends to get repetitive, however, there is a lot of advise tucked carefully between the many examples given. It was a very different world when the author wrote this book, but as I read it I noticed, the more things change, the more they stay the same. One difference I like is the chivalry and honesty exhibited from the time period. Even the highest standards of decency today are a far cry from that time. It was a lot of fun reading some of the examples from that era and knowing they were current events. These books are well worth the read, if you can find them.

Outstanding book, very inspirational for success-minded people By Kenneth Calhoun After hearing two other top folks recommend this, I decided to go ahead and buy it, and I found myself very motivated to read what Marden had to share (especially on focus, and persistence). It's a series of short chapters that have remarkable clarity and biographical examples of what many successful people did throughout history, and the perserverance and focus they had to accomplish great goals. Written in a superbly "grand" style used by authors of Marden's time, it manages to show how to capture the best of people's triumphs over adversity, and many examples of the hardships that highly successful people overcame, from Lincoln to Napoleon to many others. Fascinating, compelling, and inspiring -- well worth reading.To success,Ken

Though the book was written over thirty years ago, but its conclusion are still valid. It starts from the war of 1857 and ends with the separation of East Pakistan. It narrates the internal dynamics between different classes of Muslims (ulema, politicians, civil servants, military etc.) as well as between Muslims and Hindus. You get a fairly good idea about how the civil servants and military acquired power in Pakistan, how after part of Subcontinent that became part of Pakistan lost most of the business in the 10 weeks between June 1947 and August 1947, this void was replaced by Gujrati businessmen from South Africa and Burma. Again, a must read.

Of course. First word books are usually for very young pre-reading kids, but this one seems off target to me.Each pair of pages is one large image of a place - The Home, The Farm, The Seashore, The City, The Carnival, The Birthday Party, and The Park. Bedtime is given just one full page. On the pages, in the appropriate settings, are everyday items with labels. The last page is a list of all the words from the book.The illustrations are similar in style to the seek-and-find / Where's Waldo images, with a dash of Busytown thrown in. This is a large part of the reason I'm unimpressed with the book. The illustrations are nice, but for young readers who are just beginning to learn, this seems like a bad choice. It's hard enough to learn to read without the distraction of words written in a small font on a cluttered page.- AnnaLovesBooks

Clear, Actionable, Research-based Advice By Peter Meyers As a psychologist and marketer, I've been a long-time fan of Roger's blog and was excited to see him finally write a book. Brainfluence strikes a great (and rare) balance between being research-based and academic while still being clear and actionable. The market seems to be flooded with one or the other - academics who can't communicate, or marketers who only have opinions with nothing to back them up.I've read many of the classics, like Cialdini's "Influence", so I was pleasantly surprised to find not only new data in Brainfluence, but new ways of looking at that data. The "100 Ways" approach made for a great collection of real-world examples and I definitely walked away with some ideas for my existing clients.

If you're a fundraiser, and you prefer to base your fundraising on facts and science (as opposed to your own hunches and superstition), this is the book for you. It focuses on practical marketing takeaways from neurological research. There are 100 short chapters, each with a neuroscience finding and how it might be used in marketing.I came away from this book with more than a hundred ideas I can test or just put to work in fundraising. If even a small percentage of these ideas improve results, my clients stand to make the price of the book hundreds of times over in the coming months.Like any science, neuroscience research is extremely technical; the findings are hard for us non-scientists to understand, much less put to work. The problem is there's a lot of mis-information out there. Theoretical advice over what works and what doesn't and a lot of it isn't backed by much proof. Some would be expert tells you, "don't do that, it doesn't sound like a good idea." Here's the thing though, I want to know why. Why isn't it a good idea? What do you recommend? And why?What I love about "Brainfluence" is that it answers the "why." It's a solid book, full of great insight that can be applied to various areas of your business. What's more is it's backed by research. And that's what I love about this book. It's like having my own personal business coach giving me sound advice, backed by research, over the various aspect of my business from pricing strategy to building trust with customers and potential customers. "We shall be better and braver if we think that we ought to enquire" By Viktor Blasjo Conventionally, the Meno is of course taken to be a profound work on epistemology: Meno puts forth a devastating "paradox" calling into question the very possibility of learning (80d), which Socrates can only defuse with a sophisticated and portentous theory of knowledge as recollection that is to become a linchpin of the mature Platonic worldview.I believe that this reading of the Meno, and Plato generally, is a distortion caused by the unwarranted projection onto Plato of the nowadays all-pervasive conception that all philosophy must be a sober quest for truth. Indeed, if we listen to Plato's own words we see that, far from claiming to have dealt with a momentous problem of epistemology, he is instead at pains to ridicule the problem and belittle his own solution:"We ought not to listen to this sophistical argument about the impossibility of enquiry: for it will make us idle; and is sweet only to the sluggard; but the other saying will make us active and inquisitive." (81d) "Some things I have said of which I am not altogether confident. But that we shall be better and braver and less helpless if we think that we ought to enquire, than we should have been if we indulged in the idle fancy that there was no knowing and no use in seeking to know what we do not know---that is a theme upon which I am ready to fight, in word and deed, to the utmost of my power." (86b-c)In other words, the important thing is not epistemology or truth but the kind of life we ought to live: active, brave, and inquisitive.I think this misunderstood point is crucial for understanding several other misinterpreted passages in Plato, particularly regarding science. Consider for example Plato's condemnations of experimental and empirical science in the Timaeus (68d and 91d). It would be a mistake to interpret these passages as signs of the backwardness of Plato's conception of science, as is often done. The point Plato is making is simply this: it is good to think and come up with imaginative theories. Now, some people will try to deflate this enterprise by pointing out that these fancy theories fail to agree with actual, empirical observations. These people miss the point. Beautiful theories are an end in themselves; observations be damned. Fools with no imagination think they are being clever when they try to disprove theories by observations, but they prove nothing besides their own inability to understand the purpose of philosophy. What is the point in ruining a child's happy play by pointing out that the stick he is holding is not really a sword? This is all these fools do, and they imagine themselves superior for it. These are the people Plato is attacking in the Timaeus.Again in the Republic we have the same pattern: "we will let be the things in the heavens, if we are to have a part in the true science of astronomy," says Plato, and the truth-mob jump to chastise him so quickly that they forget to read the second half of the sentence: "and so convert to right use from uselessness that natural indwelling intelligence of the soul" (530c). Again the point is clear: the purpose of science is not to amass truths but "to lead the best part of the soul up to the contemplation of what is best among realities" (532c).Thus Plato's aversion to empirical science is not a matter of epistemology but simply a practical judgement as to what type of philosophy leads to a richer and more satisfying life of the mind. Empiricism spoils many fun theories and offers nothing in their place but dry and boring catalogues of facts. But Plato likes beautiful theories, whether true or not, and he dislikes catalogues of facts. So he condemns empiricism for this reason---in order to stay true to the ideal laid down in the Meno: to be active, brave, and inquisitive.

Ken Ward, Forester By Charles Wheeler The Young Forester is one of Zane Grey's "Ken Ward" books for boys, but don't let that deter you from buying it. It has all the flavor and tenor of any Zane Grey book with its descriptive quality and its action sequences as Ken gets into all kinds of trouble in Arizona riding mustangs, hunting bears, and lions in the Grand Canyon and vicinity. He meets many "characters" along the way who help educate him to the ways of the West. This is a great book of outdoor adventure for the young and the young at heart, and fills out any Zane Grey collection. Enjoy it for what it is and appreciate it as you would any of his books, and watch as a master story teller learns his craft in one of his early works. Highly recommended. I have tll his exact book, and have had it for nearly 30 years. I still enjoy it.

Known mainly for writing westerns, Zane Grey's The Young Forester is often lost in the shuffle. While it's often considered a children's book, The Young Forester follows a young man, Kenneth, in his quest to become a forest ranger.After gaining his father's permission to go west to work with a childhood friend, Ken stumbles on a lumbering operation that's stripping the trees and leaving nothing behind. Throughout the book, Ken struggles against the loggers to save Penetier Forest and the future of the industry.Written in a time when the United States' government was beginning to understand conservatism in dealing with the natural world, the story revolves around the same issues many people experienced. Between the underlying story, the strong characters, and beautifully detailed surroundings this book made me want to be a forest ranger. I've only read it once in the last twenty-five years and it drew me in just like it did the first day I was handed my copy.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. TRUE GRIT! By Paul Manfredi Easy to ready book full of personal letters sent to Duke and sent by Duke. I already knew a lot about Duke but liked him even more after reading these letters. I liked his bluntness in writing politicians, like the time he told Barry Goldwater that he was upset that Goldwater didn't return his call. I also liked it when a fan who was ill and was entering the hospital invited Duke to his "farewell" party and Duke told him to stop calling it a farewell and to toughen up and come out okay. He had strong opinions but was also very generous. He returned $2500 paid him for an appearance that actor's union required him to accept. So he deposited their check and wrote a personal one to the organization where he spoke so that they could get their money back. Duke's confidence just shines through in this great book and I found it inspiring!

It starts with a son telling you that you think you know John Wayne but he is way more than you though...and he is. You get amazing quotes from him about everything, letter to and from fans and family and superstar friends. You learn his remarkable attitudes towards everything from kids, fans, friends, even losing awards. You WILL be even more impressed than you already were about this great man.

It was a nice way to view just how Duke was true to himself as well as others. Fan or not, itsan entertaining book.

Hailed as the man who kick-started modern day scepticism for the findings and conclusions of mainstream science, Charles Fort is actually a man who is paid more tribute now than ever before with the advent of alternative archaeology and science in general and with more and more people (researchers, scientists or not) actually doubting some of our more precious scientific dogmas.This book is a celebration of humor as well as scepticism, the humor part being the one which most people have greatly misunderstood about C.Fort.Fort takes literally 100s of examples of bizzare unexplained phenomena such as things falling from the sky (ranging from frogs or fish to metal objects) to spontaneous combustion, to unidentified flying objects, to time travel among others and actually exposes science's comical "answers" to these phenomena. Frogs that have been rained by the sky or fish for that matter are not a phenomenon that has stopped. It still happens. The "official explanation" remains as hilarious as it was back in Fort's times, namely: a hurricane or a whirlwind picks them up and "rains" them somewhere else. However, why these winds are selective in what they pick up remains unaswered by science.The usual and continuing up to this day explanation about UFOs which concerns mass illusion or the classic "weather baloon" explanation is picked up by Fort and given the ridiculing treatment it deserves. What makes Fort such a classic and cult figure is his ability to use subtle (mostly) but lethal sarcasm to debunk the dogmatic and more than often funny explanations that scientists offer when cornered with occurences that dont fit or even shutter their sacred theories. Fort's intention is none other than to highlight our trait of mixing cluelessness with arrogance and at the same time to trigger openmindedness or more importantly thinking for oneself and not religiously depending on science to shape the answers so that they fit the question. The problem that Fort brings out with the "Book of the damned" is one that persists today as well. With Darwinistic theories being heavily challenged, with the Bing Bang theory being literally taken apart by daring scientists, and with Quantum physics proving that the "unthinkable" might actually be very thinkable indeed it's the Fortean spirit celebrated all over again on a grand scale.Fort's critics (and they aren't few) take his theories the way they take the theories of mainstream science as well: for granted. Fort offers in this book for example a theory of a "super Sargasso sea" where all these living organisms keep falling from. One would have to be tremendously lacking in humour or imagination not to gather that Fort is yanking the collective chain here. What he does say in reality is: "if you can offer such a ridiculous theory about this phenomenon (insert unexplained phenomenon here) then i might as well add my own which by no means is less or more serious but it's nevertheless just as unproven as yours". It's as simple as that really and Fort uses this technique repeateadly in his "Book of the damned" calling damned those who "dare" refuse official dogma. There has been much criticism as well concerning the overwhelming bulk of paradigms that Fort uses in this book and the critics are probably right in this case. There was no need for such volume as the point would easily get across with 1/3 of these examples. But that aside, this is in fact a book way, way ahead of its time. It's funny how a man can be thrown to the pyre exactly because he uses his humour to dismiss our fear of not being able to explain the world around us. It's even funnier that we keep insisting we can despite alarming failures. The "Book of the damned" is a grand example of a brave mind. The problem with brave minds is that they are usually shoved under the gigantic rug tagged "truth" for a very long time before anyone recognises their impact.

A Michaud This book, one of four he published before passing away in 1932, exploits Fort's research into reports of peculiar things in the sky or fallen from the sky to challenge the authority of establishment science. He describes the book as an assemblage of data of external relations of this earth, "damned" by those who hold for our planet's isolation. According to Fort, the attitude of Science and Christian Science toward the unwelcome is the same: it does not exist.Some of the events described in these reports would be described today as UFO's. While some of these cases may warrant attention, others seem marginal.Fort hypothesizes that "there is somewhere aloft a place" where life may have orginated; "evolution on this earth has been induced by external influences." He offers alternative explanations for unexplained sightings: another world that is in secret communication with certain "esoteric" inhabitants of this earth; other worlds that are trying to establish communication with all the inhabitants of the earth; other worlds and vast structures that pass us by without the slightest desire to communicate; a vast construction that has often come to this earth, dipped into an ocean, then gone away. At one point, Fort writes that the earth was a no-man's land explored and colonized by other worlds; now something owns this earth, warning off all others. All this, he goes on, has been known, perhaps for ages, to certain ones upon the earth.It is hard to know how much of this is serious and how much is just satire. Fort's imagined super-constructions a few miles above the earth stretch credibility too far. His quirky writing style, though sometimes entertaining, tends to further undermine his believability. Nonetheless, anyone wanting to read into the UFO phenomenon may find this book useful background.

By A Customer This is not a new book, but was written sometime around the turn of century and has been considered a classic on most 'required reading' lists. A spoof on the awe in which society holds the Holy Writs of the scientific community, the author marshalled an impressive army of established, documented facts for which the official scientific explanations are simply absurd. A 'must read' for anyone who believes science teaches The Truth -- or for anyone who suspects otherwise.

About the Author Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in 1807 in Portland, Maine, and he became a professor of modern languages at Harvard. His most famous narrative poems include The Song of Hiawatha, Paul Reveres Ride, "The Village Blacksmith," "The Wreck of the Hesperus." From his friend Nathaniel Hawthorne, Longfellow got a brief outline of a story from which he composed one of his most favorite poems, 'Evangeline'. The original story had Evangeline wandering about New England in search of her bridegroom. One of the first poets to take the landscape and stories of North America as his subjects, Longfellow became immensely popular all over the world, and he was the first American commemorated in the Poets Corner of Westminster Abbey. He was given honorary degrees at the great universities of Oxford and Cambridge, invited to Windsor by Queen Victoria, and called by request upon the Prince of Wales. He was also chosen a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and of the Spanish Academy. He died on March 24, 1882.

Where the saying "wreck of the Hesperus" comes from By Sue Young Many people, young and old, have used the phrase "It(or you)look like the wreck of the Hesperus" and after hearing it from so many people(who would say that but not know what the Hesperus was), I spent time on the web trying to find out. Learning it was a poem by Longfellow, my library had a copy and I read it. It is a sad tale of a shipwreck, written with such vivid detail that leaves you in awe of the work. I would suggest to the reader, if you, too, always wondered about this old saying, you find the book which contains the poem,and see for yourself how gripping a tale it is.

I loved the story, ,y mother used to recite it to me when we camped.The only hitch, the illustrations statred, are NOT in the book, but, not a biggy, the poen was wondrous

This free Kindle edition has 117 pages/2601 locations. This edition is a reprint of the Helen Zimmern translation from German into English of "Beyond Good and Evil," as published in The Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche (1909-1913).Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (1844-1900) had studied theology (which he didn't finish) and philology (the study of language in written historical scources); he became a professor of philology at the university of Basel in 1869, but had to resign in 1879 due to ill health. Nietzsche collapsed in 1889, causing him to become mentally ill, and needed to be cared for until his death in 1900. It has been thought that his collapse was caused by syphilis, but this diagnosis is no longer believed to be correct. The cause of his illness is not known.In this work Nietzsche critises old philosophers and some of their views on 'free will', knowledge, truth, etc. He felt that the philosophers in the past had not been critical enough about morality, accepting the Chistian views on this theme without questioning those views. Nietzsche tells in this book what qualities philosophers should have, he believed philosophers should move on, into the area 'beyond good and evil'.I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in modern philosophy, this book will make you think about some of your ideas about good and bad. You don't have to agree with him to gain new insight from this book. Nietzsche was a great writer, his works are written in a lively way. For Nietzsche rhetoric was more important than logic. 35 of 37 people found the following review helpful. I had not idea philosophy could be so enjoyable and funny. By Betsy It is hard to get into but once you get with the flow of it, it is magnificent. The language is full of wit and irony that will amuse and enlighten the reader. It does have sentences that are a paragraph long but they are wonderful. Just flow with it and do not try to analyze and you are in for the ride of your life. It is like a roller coaster ride with the slow lead up to some excitingly fantastic literary thrills and jolts. The use of language...hard to believe it is a translation...resonates with truth, humor and hilarious realism that is more profound today than it could have been when written over a hundred years ago. I find it delightful to just pick up and read a chapter at a time. It is too much for a straight through read but one cannot say on the roller coaster for too long either. A real intellectual pleasure.

A excellent version of Nietsche's book By Amazon Customer This is an excellent version of Nietsche's book, expanding on his earlier works and characterizing his fellow philosophers as blindly accepting a single religious set of moral definitions that constrain their viewpoints. His text encourages critical consideration in the place of blind acceptance and also discusses issues with the Germanic anti-Semitism that influenced many Europeans.

By Katharyne Shelton This book should be required reading for new Amazon sellers - it clearly outlines fifteen areas that can cause trouble for both the merchant fulfilling and FBA seller and explains how to avoid them. And trouble is serious on Amazon - it can mean lost money or worse, a lost account.What I love about this book is that it is full of proactive advice for the newer seller - how to keep yourself out of trouble, how to understand the various metrics and indicators that Amazon uses to gauge your success as a seller and how to ensure you are actually making a profit and not losing money without realising it.And even better, Art is a calm, guiding voice to cope with any actual problems that might arise, from getting poor feedback to losing your account.The 62 pages are jampacked full of clear, simple, easy to follow advice. Easy to read and digest quickly but you'll keep going back to consult it again and again.Art is a very well respected veteran seller with a deep understanding of how Amazon works and has been helping sellers to stay out of trouble for many years. It's an absolute joy to now see some of that knowledge shared in book form.

Very friendly, conversational - and funny! This is a well-crafted book that makes a great Christmas gift! The conversational style draws the reader in, and, as Holtsclaw mentions on the back cover, Murphy's Law is at work every day and funerals are no exception. Good read, and it's a great gift (for any occasion)!

Feels like a neighbor sharing quips over a glass of tea. Laughter is a corrective & Holtsclaw uses laughter to point people to the light.
