But here a heavy step descending the stair just outside the room attracted her attention, and checking the flow of her speech perforce, with three ungainly strides she reached the landing. "Watty Witherspail! Watty!" she called after the footsteps down the stair. "Yes, mem," answered a gruff voice from below.

13 of 17 people found the following review helpful. A Classic By karycter A bit cheesy, but not as much as Jayne Eyre. MacDonald tends to be a bit formulaic in some of his books, and this one is the epitome of that formula. And possibly the apex. If you only read one book by old Georgie, this would be the one. It will warm your heart if you let it. A rugged old Scottish Cinderella story. As a side note, MacDonald was a Christian and the influence is seen. This is the man who inspired CS Lewis in writing.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. wonderful book By Maggie Jarpey If you like MacDonald (not the modernized ones by Phillips), you'll love Malcolm and the sequel, Marquis of Lossie. Wonderfully entertaining, satisfying, edifying. Great plot, as always. Most important, you'll love the characters of Malcolm, primarily, and some others as well. Lots of Scots dialect, so you'd better be used to that, or it could ruin the experience for you. I got used to it from other original MacDonald books, and now I would miss it if it were changed to English. It's worth getting used to. The modernized versions of MacDonald are so different from the real thing!
