In his brief career as a barrister, William Gallows had amassed a string of guilty verdicts unsurpassed in legal history. He was on a first name basis with every executioner in Ludgate, and a case never fell into his lap but was hopeless to start with. Clients of Gallows were not only guilty, they were caught red-handed at the crime scene, murder weapon in one hand and signed confession letter in the other. In this collection are three short stories taken from the casebooks of the imperturbable Mr. Gallows in his long struggle to defend the indefensible.

Lacy’s novella “Gallows’ Law” is a joke — a well-crafted, wickedly funny joke. Those who enjoy wordplay, social commentary and sardonic wit will undoubtedly appreciate Mr. Lacy’s endeavor. “Gallows’ Law” follows the exploits of William Gallows, a barrister in the city of Ludgate in the early 1800s. While the ambience is Dickensian, the story’s foundation is decidedly postmodern. Mr. Lacy revels in wordplay. Unlike other contemporary pieces that expel rapid-fire erudite one-liners in dizzying fashion, Gallows’ Law takes its time with humor. Near the opening of the text, readers observe William Gallows heave various objects out windows; it isn’t until several pages later do readers learn about legal loopholes related to defenestration. Sit back and get to know William Gallows, a jaded lawyer whose view of social mores, the law and human nature will undoubtedly engage and amuse.

By Amazon Customer Set in Ludgate, England in the early 1800s, Gallows' Law by JM Lacy is a collection of several short stories that follow an intelligent but lazy barrister as he represents clients considered hopelessly guilty. I found the stories--filled with wit, humor and unexpected twists and turns--to be a thoroughly enjoyable read. Though it may sound like a cliché, once I started the book I literally did not want to put it down.Though as far as I know this is the author's first published work, I hope it isn't the last. I am looking forward to reading JM Lacy's next work.Ken Wyler

It's actually a collection of three short stories, based around an eccentric barrister who just can't be bothered. With a few nods to Sherlock Holmes, and an homage or two to Dickens, the author succeeds in crafting unique characters in a short amount of time through witty observances and clever storytelling. I'm always a fan of sardonic humor that takes an unexpected route, and I like how the dry asides sometimes come out just a bit off from where you expect them to land. I found myself snickering a lot. The engaging storylines aren't built on gripping drama, but rather an intelligent pacing that lets each case play out in a well-crafted way that leaves you wondering where the humor will take you next. Right off the bat you do start to realize that, although Gallows' clients fall among the indefensible, it's the accusers who have way more to hide. And Gallows might be barely bothered to defend anyone, but he's certainly motivated at least by an opportunity to stymie the untouchable (and give himself a little boost in the process). If not a wink to the current state of the American legal system (told from an old-timey, faux British town), then at least a hapless shrug.Gallows' Law would be enjoyable for any age group, with humor that increases with the reader's experience. The stories are constructed with enough articulation to please any avid fan of literature. But it's also a quick read, with solid flow, so it's perfect to give to someone who might otherwise be hesitant to pick up a book. I believe this is the author's first published work, and I hope to see more.
