Daisy Miller is a novella by Henry James that first appeared in Cornhill Magazine in June–July 1878, and in book form the following year. His pursuit of her is hampered by her own flirtatiousness, which is frowned upon by the other expatriates when they meet in Switzerland and Italy.

About the Author Henry James was an American author, essayist, and critic known for his contributions to both literary criticism and the realist movement, which focused on presenting everyday life as it actually was. In creating realistic portrayals of life and society, James often included elements of social and political commentary in his works, notably his depiction of the feminist movement in The Bostonians, and the exploration of culture clash between America and Europe in Daisy Miller. James s best known works also include The Portrait of a Lady, The Ambassadors, and the novella The Turn of the Screw. American by birth, James spent much of his time in England and eventually moved to London. He became a British subject just before his death in 1916.

When you read this Kindle edition (Cambridge), the story actually ends when the Kindle shows you are only 65% through it. The last 1/3 is the critical commentary. If you don't know this, the ending seems to come much too suddenly.

Some may know it as the 1974 Peter Bogdanovich film starring a miscast Cybill Shepherd. Forget the film. This novelette by Henry James is as light as a feather--but left me with a weighty, deep feeling that I had just read something very significant about cultural transitions between the old world (Europe) and the new (Hello!). It seems strangely timely now that women have confirmed and moved on from the prognostications of Henry James regarding their freedom from the restricting social mores of the 19th and early 20th centuries. It's a fast read--but one you may wish to repeat as its undercurrents sink in.

Gave it a quick read and it left me shaking my head a book and couldn't figure out how I really felt about it. After a lively discussion with a great bunch of people, I still don't like the main characters but have a much greater appreciation for the book. Definitely worth the read.
