In the town of Roxbury, among the western Catskills, was born April 3, 1837, John Burroughs. The house in which he first saw the light was an unpainted, squarish structure, only a single story high, with a big chimney in the middle. This house was removed a few years later, and a better and somewhat larger one, which still stands, was built in its place. The situation is very pleasing. Roundabout is a varied country of heights, dales, woods and pastures, and cultivated fields.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Year in the Fields By Joe McMahon John Burroughs was one of our first nature writers. Written in the last of the 1800's, his style is very easy to read. As opposed to John Muir who wrote about the far west, Burroughs stays mainly in the northeastern United States. While Muir writes describing the scenery, Burroughs writes about the plant and animals he sees during a year in New England. Speaking as a biologist, some of his bird names are not the same as we use today. This style of writing is just what I like to read as non-technical, relaxing prose.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Year in the Fields By Michael J. almost any book written by John Burroughs is a hit with me.If you love nature give it a read you will not be disappointed.
