7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Good for business owners/manager, less so for others. By Derek There are several points I would make in reviewing this book. The first being that I don't necessarily disagree with anything the author says. The book does contain some good information and certainly some helpful tips for building a positive, customer focused business. I also like that it's not too long so you can easily read it in an afternoon. Some of the things he says seem stupid obvious until you consider your day to day experiences and realize they are lost on a lot of people. (For example, 10 minutes late is late.)Having said those things I also have a few criticisms:The author is clearly an extrovert so some of the personality traits he talks about or things he sort of assumes you are already doing are only valid if you are also extroverted like him. For those of us who are introverts, you are going to realize that there are extra steps involved to reach some of his suggested goals/mindsets (or whatever you might call them).This book is much more valuable if you are a business-owner or manager etc., particularly if you are in sales. Again I'm not disagreeing with his philosophies, but if you are not a manager and don't have a lot of direct customer contact then much of what he talks about will apply to you, it will just apply a lot less often. There could be some good life lessons buried in there though.Lastly, the one thing the author doesn't do is address when to pull the plug. He emphasizes superior customer service and the customer is always right but, let's be honest, there are some customers whose expectations can never be met and who are just plain wrong. He spends so much time talking about being nice and being positive that he forgets to mention sometimes you have end a toxic relationship. (He does discuss learning to say 'No' but not in this context.) Only with one line in the last chapter does he touch on this when he says "Not every customer is a good customer for you." I wish he would have spent some time discussing that you can cut somebody off and still be nice. I think a lot of people struggle with this concept.Overall it's an easy read and certainly applicable if you deal directly with customers a lot. Otherwise it contains a few basic life lessons but probably not a lot of insightful material.

Great business advice that you can really follow. This is not rocket science, it's just great, down to earth advice that can help any business grow. Big and small business' have lost site of how important it is to create a connection with your customers, and how a great experience can make someone a customer for life, and Doug Sandler offers up some very original, imaginative ways to do that. There are a lot of great business advice books out there, but this one could become the next classic.

Nice Guys Finish First, demonstrates unequivocally that by investing time, effort and energy in doing the right thing and adopting a consultative-based approach of inspiring prospects and customers to take optimal actions you will be both successful and happy. There are lots of lessons for large businesses on how to stop hiding behind technology and to start putting the "human" back into client relationships; after-all isn't a win/win about leaving others feeling good about themselves and thereby wanting a deeper more engaging relationship with you? As the author of "The Ultimate Guide to Consulting in the Networked Age" I fully concur with Doug on the need for systems, and trust-building consistency that facilitate exceptional client service that is delivered in a consultative (i.e. not "selling") approach of advising and educating clients to make good decisions and to execute properly. A must read that reveals the secret of the happiness factor that comes from going the extra mile where the reader will find that it is less crowded out there with Doug. I have no doubt that the happiness and success system revealed by Doug will change many lives for the better; this book will be BIG!!
