I wrote this story in the Tyrol. The accident of my residence there was in this wise: I had travelled about the Continent for a considerable time in company with my family with my own horses. Our carriage was a large and comfortable calèche, and our team, four horses; the leaders of which, well-bred and thriving-looking, served as saddle horses when needed. There was something very gypsy-like in this roving, uncertain existence, that had no positive bent or limit, and left every choice of place an open question, that gave me intense enjoyment. It opened to me views of Continental life, scenery, people and habits I should certainly never have attained to by other modes of travel.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Historical Novel of the passage of the Irish Act of Union of 1800 By Jill M. Heins This is a the story of Captain Forester, a politician who travels to Ireland to try and garner support from Maurice Darcy (the Knight of Gwynne) for The Act of Union in England’s Parliament. The Union is unpopular in Ireland so this is a daunting task. Captain Forester is wounded in a duel with MacDonough while visiting the Abbey of Gwynne (Gwynne’s estate), necessitating a longer stay than he intended as he recovers.Darcy’s financial manager, Tom Gleeson, absconds after bringing him to financial ruin. Darcy then resigns from his seat in Parliament. Hickman O’Reilly is extolled by the public for rejecting bribery, but he attempts to benefit from Darcy’s ruin and was in cahoots with Gleeson.Darcy’s daughter Helen is the love interest of Captain Forester but since this is only Volume 1, this is not resolved by the end of the novel. The prose is very old fashioned and if you like authors like Charlotte Bronte you will enjoy this tale. I gave it 3 and a half stars because it's slightly long-winded.
