Let me begin by informing you, that this new novel does not present the proposed sequel to my last work of fiction—"The Fallen Leaves." The first part of that story has, through circumstances connected with the various forms of publications adopted thus far, addressed itself to a comparatively limited class of readers in England. When the book is finally reprinted in its cheapest form—then, and then only, it will appeal to the great audience of the English people. I am waiting for that time, to complete my design by writing the second part of "The Fallen Leaves."

Review An excellent sensation novel with some fascinating social history. Hooray for Oxford World's Classics for reprinting it. Harriet Devine's Blog this book is a cracking good story exciting, twisty, thought-provoking and very unputdownable. On the evidence of Jezebel's Daughter, Collins was more than just a one (or two!) trick pony, and Im definitely up for reading more of his work! Robinson A good suspenseful drama with fascinating characters, thrilling murder plots and an interesting exemplification of perverted morals. A well written novel combining wonderfully well the tragic and the comic. Wilkie Collins, reputed to be the author of the first detective novel, is one of my favourite fiction writers of the period.

Scandalous...even in this day and age By Willy B I was amused by this story because even though it was written so long ago, I was still able to relate to it in the year 2013. The characters were well developed and the plot lines had enough twists to make this a quick, enjoyable read. The ending really surprised me!

It is well-written but although I read the story from beginning to end, I felt that it was over-long and I could figure out what would happen next. Despite this, I enjoyed the story. I read many of Collins’ books and enjoyed them all. It is 1828. A husband dies and his widow who becomes the senior partner in a thriving business in England and Germany wants to give female employees the same jobs and rights as men. She is able to implement her goal in England and wants to travel to Germany to persuade her partners to implements her plan. The widow also wants to show that she can cure madness by being kind to deranged persons. She wants to bring one such person, a man, into her home “one of the most dangerous lunatics we have in the house (asylum).” This man has a mysterious history. One of the German partners refuses his son permission to marry a nice young woman who is the daughter of a woman who many people claim is evil. Among much else, they claim she stole poisons from her husband when he died. There are two German partners and the allegedly evil woman has an evil impact upon one of the partners. This woman has no money, her relatives refuse to help her, she is in debt and faces imprisonment, and she needs to get a large sum of money. She wants to get her daughter married to the son of the other German partner.
