I have delineated the scenes of this narrative, from time to time, as they took place. I thought at the time when they occurred that some of them were against me. I do not place this volume before its readers that I may gain any applause: I have sought to say no more of myself than was necessary.

That being said, this is a fascinating firsthand account of early settler life in Wayne county Michigan. If you are at all familiar with this area, read this book. If a bear hunt near the "town of Romulus" doesn't peak your curiosity, check your pulse.

Even though it occurs 100-150 years later than the period I have been researching, I believe the experiences related would have been very similar to those of the earliest settlers along the east coast.

Reading about what the area was like before it "grew" into the city of Taylor, MI was quite interesting. As I read, I tried to figure out where the Bark Covered House was located in relation to where we lived. Discovered it was VERY close. Fun to learn about how primitive it was as well as covered with trees and growth, and animals - and that it was not soooo long ago! The characters were interesting also. FUN!
