5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Arden Is the best By A. Stevens I always get the Arden editions of Shakespeare. They are very detailed and user friendly.Being one of Shakespeare's early plays the plot is a little inconsistant. It seems in the last scene that shakespeare just wanted to finish the play and therefore everything happens in a few pages that makes it a little unrealistic.The play does have some lovely speeches though, and is quite comical and an easy story to follow.

A comedy like all the others By Garrett Zecker Inspiring all of his other comedies that basically fit into the exact same plot structure and storyline, TWO GENTLEMEN is a fun, predictable romp through Verona's streets. As with all of his other romcoms, Shakespeare sets out to tell a tale of misplaced love, unwanted affection, crossdressing, and simple twists of fate that lead our characters astray, and then together once more by the end. There is a silly villain, letters that never reach their intended, and disguises, all coming together to build comedy using situational and dramatic irony.I read this as an undergraduate in college, and found it to be fun, but now as an adult and having read all of Shakespeare's works (and even other author's interpretations of Shakespeare's work such as The Tragedy of Arthur and Macbeth II: The Seed Of Banquo) I find the work to be mediocre and predictable. That isn't to say it isn't good - but as the Reduced Shakespeare Company says, "Why Did You Write Sixteen Comedies, When You Could've Written Just 1?"It's true. This play is the same as TAMING, MIDSUMMER, MERRY WIVES, and others (well, not really the Tempest - but none of his plays are like the Tempest), and it really is the formulaic inspiration that is copied in the other comedy texts. It is effective in one major place - the fact that it made Mr. Shakespeare money, and he was well aware of what his audiences liked.That is not to say it is a bad play - it isn't at all. There are some genuinely funny places in it (my favorite, "...but you are so without these follies that these follies are within you, and shine through you like the water in an urinal"). I suppose it is the grand application of the man's works that include the comedies that so uncannily resemble one another that makes readers of Shakespeare like me scratch his head. Change the location and the character names and a couple events? New title, new play. But it is a fun story, and I would have loved to see this and all the others performed in London in 1595, regardless. Would I still have the complete works as my only book on a desert island? You bet. Would I resent the comedies a little after 20 years on this desert island, though? Maybe, but I would still have the great tragedies and histories to keep me company.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Apparently A Very Early Shakespeare Comedy - A Good Study By Francis C. Donnelly I am strictly a Shakespeare amateur. I am trying to become "well read" by self education.According to my studies, it is generally believed that this is an early work of Shakespeare, maybe his first "comedy" and maybe his first play. It is seldom performed. And for me, reading Shakespeare is not as enjoyable as watching a good performance.If it is correct that this is an early Shakespeare play, and I think that it is, one of the most valuable aspects of the play is reading it and comparing it to his later work. There is a gentleman named Harold Bloom who writes about literature. Mr. Bloom has observed if one reads an early Shakespeare play and compare it to some of his contemporaries, such as Christopher Marlowe, Shakespeare is more or less just another decent playwright. I have followed Mr. Bloom's advice and done this. I agree with Mr. Bloom.Shakespeare evolves and emerges as a unique playwright in later plays. I think that is why an early play like this is seldom performed. I mean, when is the last time you saw a performance of a play by Christerpher Marlowe? Anyway this, to me, is the true value of Two Gentlemen of Verona.Also, this play is classified as a "comedy". This does not mean this is slapstick such as a prime time network sitcom. As best I can tell it means the play has a happy ending. There are parts of this play that makes me cringe. I have read several Shakespeare "comedies". I have never read one that did not make me cringe at some point.Shakespeare also seems to write stories that trivialize women. That may have been normal at this time in history, despite the fact that the ruler of England was Queen Elizabeth I. It is suspected that Shakespeare was involved in an unhappy marriage. I do not know if this affected his writing or he just wrote what he thought would sell. Perhaps it is a little of both.In summary, I can't say as I have heard of anyone who feels this is their favorite Shakespeare play. It is not mine. But it definitely has its place in any in depth Shakespeare study. Thank You.

It stripped away the pressure and doubts I had and was a key turning in my door to motivation.This book is full of pieces of golden insights. By Monica Mulholland I really liked this book because it gave lots of tips and real life examples of how to cure your procrastination. Unlike other books on the topic which really gave a lot of mumbo jumbo and theory, this book really helps you get to BEGONE! I especially found the idea of the BIg Why to be very useful. I also liked very much the piece on Feng Shui - I never thought that the position of my desk would make a difference. Now I have a real good reason to procrastinate; I walk around my office finding where the sweet spot is energy wise! ;)This book is very useful for anybody who suffers from Procrastination and would be very useful for people who run their own business or are involved in small businesses. Yates Odd, brief, lots of empty space, I think they published their book concept brainstorm notes. I received nothing of value from this book. Frankly, I could have easily written this book myself. What would I change about it? No CommentThree stars because there are NO good works on this subject. Thereby this book gets an average for showing up to a competition of one.

Jackpotting with a genuine wrestling legend By Craig Peters Bill has been a dear friend of mine since I started working at the Pro Wrestling Illustrated family of magazines in Freeport, New York, in 1981. I was with them for 15 years, during which the office moved to Rockville Center, NY, and later to Ambler, Pennsylvania.Bill and I spent many days on the road together (particularly in the mid-80s) photographing matches, interviewing wrestlers, and appearing on television. During that time, I not only got to become friends with Bill (our wives are good friends, too), I got a front-row seat for seeing how Bill operates. It was always both entertaining and fascinating to see what he did and how he did it. There's simply no one else like him.Bill was (and remains) one of the most well-known and influential people in the pro wrestling business. During the heyday of the PWI mags, he was the liaison between the magazines and the performers in the ring (and the businessmen behind the scenes). The coverage he gave to regional promotions made national stars out of many performers (and this was in the days before cable). He was the reason Jerry Lawler feuded with Andy Kaufman and appeared on David Letterman's show.For decades, he has been living the life that any serious wrestling fan would dream of having. What fan wouldn't want to sit with Bill for an afternoon and get to know him better and listen to him tell stories about his time on the road?This book lets readers do exactly that.Many of the stories in this book are familiar to me; indeed, I've heard him tell some of them a dozen or more times. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great, casual laid-back read! By R.L. Stump, Jr. I started reading Mr. Apter's book last week on my Kindle. It has been a joy to read it. Mr. Apter's writing style is geared to the "Everyman." You can hop around and read the chapters of the book in any particularly order, which is fine by me. Chapters and chapters of stories and case studies of pro wrestling that truly show the point of view of an unsung hero of the pro wrestling business. He is truly grateful for all of his pro wrestling experiences and that is obvious with this fantastic, relaxing read!

A few years ago me and my friend Nick were talking, I started telling him how I sold sandwiches at 13 and saved to buy my first car, how I started my first company at 21 and made millions, how I lost those millions and had to borrow rent money from mom, how I rose from the ashes and built an online empire afterwards and he was like: "Vladi, you blow my mind my friend, I haven't met anybody with a life like yours, you have to write a book or I won't be friends with you any more LOL" I was still running my offline company at that time and did not have the time to do it, but about six months ago I said: "fuck it, I'm starting the book right now, I want to tell people how to build million dollar companies no matter where they are and what situation they are in..." and there it is - "Getting Rich The New School Way" is the result. I have done a lot of stuff, have created a lot of products, have done a lot of good, have served a lot of people, but have never done anything that makes me as proud as this book. If it doesn't blow your mind I'll meet with you and let you kick me in the butt LOL. Oh, I almost forgot, I watched a movie recently and the guy said: "no matter how rich you become shit still happens. There are two things you can't escape – death and shit. This guy must have read the book, shit happens, but it doesn’t matter, you get up, learn your lesson and make more money. You may read it only if you promise not to laugh!

Amazing Life Story (with many laughs and "OH MY GOD!"s along the way) By Iulian Novac Vladi wrote a fantastic book.It's not your "average" book - it's much more than that.It's about a young man with a dream who fought through everything for his wellbeing - and who seems to enjoy life no matter what.Although the "lessons" are classics, he manages to put a personal twist on them that make you explore them from a deeper point of view.If you want to laugh out loud, feel nostalgic and appreciate "the struggle" even more - read this book. You won't regret it, definitely.

From School Library Journal Grade 4 Up-This recording of A Christmas Carol is a pleasant way to spend a few hours during the holiday season. Although abridged, it retains the spirit and language of Dickens' original manuscript. Anton Lesser gives a superb performance as the narrator and the voices of the characters, especially when portraying the Cratchit family, the Christmas Spirits and the London dialects. All characters are easily understood. Appropriate music begins and ends each cassette. Possibly the best "Christmas Carol" ever By CC-in-VA Many versions of Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol" are actually abridgements (done more or less smoothly) but this version is complete and unabridged. Even if you think you are familiar with the book you may find upon reading this one that you previously had read a shortened version! The completeness of this volume would be reason enough to add it to your library, but the quality of the pages, typeface, and above all the lovely illustrations scattered throughout further commend it. I have bought copies for all 3 of my grown children--because every family deserves to own a complete version of this classic story and this one is the best I have ever seen.

Schoonover I hope all readers take time to read A CHRISTMAS CAROL in the original language Dickens used in the 1840's. Dickens' language remains humorous, descriptive and insightful and not inaccessible to most modern readers especially with the use of a good glossary. This is a great read aloud for families at Christmas time and also a great introduction to Dickens and other Victorian writers. Don't settle for an abridged version. Read this masterpiece the way it was intended

The illustrations are wonderful and the overall quality, printing, binding and paper, is terrific. This is definitely in my top three favorites of all the different versions I own.

If you don't know how to play chess you're not going to learn from a book that does not have a single diagram. Especially when the author, explaining how the pieces move, forgot to describe how the knight moves. That's right, he left out the knight. That should give you an idea of how wonderful this book is. Even if it is free or cheap, save your valuable time and look elsewhere for chess instruction.

From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 4-A picture-book adaptation of a classic holiday story that retains most of the major elements of the original, including Gram's misunderstood illness, the feigned bear attack, and the sisters' culinary foibles. While the adaptor's changes seem aimed at making the story more accessible to contemporary readers, this pared-down version unfortunately lacks the spirit of Alcott's creation. Dialogue has been edited to make it simpler and more straightforward, but much of the poetry and language of the time has been lost. Also missing are the subtle but realistic details and descriptions that create the sense of the era. Sprightly line-and-wash illustrations complement the theme of good humor and family love. The full-page spreads are framed in country patterned borders, which add to the feeling of nostalgic storytelling. Like the text, the illustrations are adequate, but lack richness and character. Michael McCurdy's version (Holiday, 1989) has more of the flavor of the original story, but offers less visual appeal to young children. Wonderful for a Wintery Day By A Customer This wholesome little book warms you from the inside with it's tale of the Bassett childrens' attempt to prepare Thanksgiving dinner while their mother and father are away. The hard work of the Bassett girls, some surprises, and only a few slight failures result in a memorable holiday for the Bassett family. Although rather short, this book is appropriate for people of all ages. An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving is a sweet story that will brighten a cold day for anyone from age five to age one-hundred.

Childs The author of "Little Women" gives us a heartwarming, homey tale of the Basset family, who were "poor in money, but rich in love." It's Thanksgiving Day, and the kitchen is full of the bustle of food preparations. Unexpectedly, a neighbor comes by to tell Mrs. Basset that her mother is ill, so Mr. Basset drives her away in the sleigh. Though the parents don't expect the children to prepare the Thanksgiving feast on their own, Tilly, the oldest, determines to give it a try. Things don't go smoothly in the kitchen, and many dishes are smelling a little odd as they cook, when two sleighs arrive, chock full of relatives! Grandma, it turns out, is fine, and she and aunts and uncles have come to feast at the Bassets. Though Tilly is embarrassed at the parts of the meal that didn't turn out too well, most is edible and much appreciated, and the home is filled with nourishing love and gratitude.

By cmc This is a cute story book for young children, and the illustrations are GREAT, but please note that this is an adaptation of the original story. I ordered it without checking first, and was disappointed to find that out! I was looking for the original story. Still, I think my kids will enjoy it.
