Goddard So, today by reading I Bleed #Innovation I learned that by just putting two probably unrelated words together I can come up with an outstanding and unique innovation that could change the world. With this idea I have use the words Macaroni Bridges. I intend for this to be an app that Architects can use to design new bridges with. The software will use different shapes of pasta to make complex designs. It will then design a blueprint that will show which pasta goes where and will also list the different pasta pieces used and how many of each you will need. (totally my idea don't steal it)See there. I knew that the author of this book Matthew Newell will be reading this review and I have now pitched my idea to him. This book will teach you a lot of nothing and will do it with the best humor out there. I loved reading his personal stories and am now myself trying to figure out how to fit one boat inside of another boat. I plan on following his advice to a tee. "Work hard, work smart, sell it like you have to sell subtlety to a Kardashian."

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I Bleed #Innovation Breeds Belly Laughs. By Kevin Lintner Interesting. Very, very interesting. I think I learned something from reading this. I do. I mean hidden among the sly wit and satirical right jabs at Silicon Valley is some really solid advice on thinking differently and marketing your ideas. Hopefully, the author won't find it insulting that I actually learned something. But if it makes him feel even better, I laughed all the way through his book from front to back and had a great time reading it. It's a farcical look at the need for greed running rampant in America where it's doesn't matter who you screw over and what shortcuts you make as long as you get to by your liquor from the tops shelf. I loved it.

If you ever wanted to live through the ultimate start-up experience, you just need to read through these pages and then take a good long exhale when you are done. I have actually met people in start-ups as the author has portrayed in his characters. There are some underlying truths to the steps involved with creating a financial empire and working the process for it to stand the test of time and thrive. This book is very well written and will keep you intently interested as you turn each page.

INTRODUCTION

There is a problem we find in our governments, in our schools, and in our families. It affects every country in the world and every citizen in them. We invest years of our lives and billions of dollars in an attempt to solve it. Big companies battle it. Nonprofits dread it. Entrepreneurs study solutions to it. In fact, it’s taunting me right now as you read this. It’s big. It’s everywhere. And I don’t see it going away on its own anytime soon.

HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF IT . . .

   • Teachers can’t get their students to do their homework.   • Managers can’t get their team members to work harder or more efficiently.   • Interrogators can’t get their subjects to speak the truth.   • Salespeople can’t get their prospects to buy more products.   • Doctors can’t get their patients to comply with treatment plans.   • Parents can’t get their kids to behave.   • Entrepreneurs can’t get investors to buy in to their vision.   • Nonprofit organizations can’t get people to donate to a cause.   • Poker players can’t get their competition to bet big.   • Religious leaders can’t get people to convert.   • Negotiators can’t get their opponents to make concessions.

The biggest problem in the world?

Not being able to get people to do stuff.

Solve this problem and you can solve anything. If more parents could motivate their children and effectively lead them into adulthood, if more teachers could inspire and engage their students, if more doctors could influence their patients toward greater health, then this world would be a better place.

To do anything of any significance on this planet, you need an army. If you want to create lasting change or do “real and permanent good,” as Andrew Carnegie espoused, then you need to motivate a movement. I don’t care if you want to start a business, or a nonprofit organization, or a family. It doesn’t matter if you want to make a movie, write a book, or go to Mars. You can’t do it alone. It’s pretty hard to be a leader if no one is following. If you want to move mountains, then you need to be able to move people.

THE STANDARD SOLUTIONS

Most people try to motivate others by begging, bribing, and reasoning them to death. When that doesn’t work, they get desperate and start nagging, manipulating, or deceiving to get the results they want.

They believe that “getting to yes” is the only goal of their communication. In reality, that’s not good enough. Not only do we want people to say “yes” to us, but we want them to follow through and DO what they promised.

This is a book about words that turn into action. It’s about motivating employees, engaging students, starting movements, empowering children, helping customers, and becoming an influential leader. In short, it’s about getting people to do stuff.

Kind of.

I should start right away with the big secret of getting people to do stuff. It’s simple and yet paradoxical.

You can’t.

Getting people to do stuff is the goal, not the process. If you try to motivate people directly, you will fail. Anyone who has ever tried to change someone’s behavior knows this to be painfully true.

As best-selling author Daniel Pink says, “Motivation is not something we do to other people.” The old adage goes, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” However, you can make him thirsty.

Motivation and influence are about creating conditions where the human brain becomes “thirsty” in such a way that the body follows. The great news is that the vast majority of brains are already thirsty in some way. They are going through life with a series of wants, needs, and desires. You just have to drill down, find their motivation, and tap into it. When you do that, watch out! Your biggest problem will not be generating motivation, but directing it.

The seven magic words in this book aren’t just words. Their roots touch the deep needs that every person has. Saying “because” is about establishing purpose. Saying “yes” displays acceptance. Using a person’s name shows significance. These are deeply human drives that we all share. They connect us.

In order for any communication to get results—whether it’s a magic trick I’m performing on the stage, or a sales pitch you’re giving in the boardroom—it must begin with an elusive little thing called human connection.

Human connection is the soil where “getting people to do stuff” grows. Get this piece right and you can mess up in a lot of other areas and still get results. Get this piece wrong and the game is over before you’ve even begun.

When teachers are truly connected with their students, learning happens. When doctors are truly connected with their patients, healing happens. When companies are truly connected with their customers, business happens.

A SKILL IN CRISIS

While the quantity of human interaction has been skyrocketing, the quality of human connection has been dissolving.

Social psychologist Sara Konrath believes that it’s no coincidence. Her research numbers are shocking.

A growing number of studies . . . over the past three decades have found decreases in empathic concern (i.e., sympathy for the misfortunes of others) along with increases in narcissism.

This pattern of decreasing empathy and increasing self-centeredness has led us to a situation where “getting people to do stuff” is all about us and our own motivations instead of about them and their motivations. It’s no wonder we’ve gotten so bad at it.

So the greatest problem in the world requires the greatest solution in the world: an immediate and widespread increase in human connection.

And words are a darn good place to start.

In 1967, UCLA professor Albert Mehrabian published two now-famous research papers that made a very bold claim. Only 7 percent of what we communicate to others has anything to do with the words that we say; the rest is transmitted through our vocal tone and body language (38 percent and 55 percent, respectively).

The phrase “It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it” has since reached cliché status. Over the last five decades, “experts” have been brandishing this statistic as a means of selling their books or getting you to attend their body language seminars. This concept has been all but beaten into our heads—and often by people who don’t fully understand what the original study actually found.

If you believe their interpretation of Mehrabian’s study, then you should be able to watch a show in Spanish and understand 93 percent of what is going on from vocal tone and body language alone—even if you don’t speak Spanish!

It doesn’t work that way.

Here’s what Mehrabian himself said: “Unless a communicator is talking about their feelings or attitudes, these equations are not applicable.”

This explains why non-Spanish-speaking people can watch a Spanish TV show and accurately perceive the emotions that the characters are portraying.

However, words aren’t completely devoid of emotion either. As psychologist John Gottman points out, “Plays would not exist if words did not contain a great potential for communicating emotional information.”

And mastering words is an even more important skill in a time when emails and texts have taken over a significant percentage of our interactions.

So who’s right? Is what you say more important than how you say it, or vice versa? Does it depend on the situation?

Actually, it’s the wrong question.

What you say isn’t necessarily important. How you say it isn’t necessarily important. Even the intent behind what you say isn’t necessarily important either.

So stop worrying about all that stuff. It’s not about you anyway. Instead, start focusing on what people hear. Rather than look at percentages, we need to start looking at the overall effect that our communication has on the people we share it with.

How language affects people—that’s the true magic of words.

[It] wasn’t language itself. It wasn’t the utterance of language itself. It wasn’t even what somebody meant. But it’s how that language affected me.

—Walter Mosley, “Let That Weight Go,” TheMoth.org

YOUR LAZY BRAIN

Your brain loves shortcuts. The world is a complex place and your brain is being relentlessly assaulted with an incredible amount of sensory information. You’ve got to have a series of preprogrammed responses to help you deal with the deluge.

That’s why when you hear a sudden loud noise, your body jolts to attention. When you see delicious food, your mouth waters. When the room is dark, hot, or both, you get drowsy. Automatically. You don’t have to think, it just happens.

Like Pavlov’s dogs, we experience these conditioned responses because our brain has learned to anticipate what’s coming next. Some of these lessons are programmed into our brains through thousands of repeated life experiences. Some are preprogrammed deeper into our brains through hundreds of thousands of years of our ancestors’ experiences.

Is it possible that there are similar “cause-and-effect” responses happening in our brain when we hear certain words? Is it possible that there are certain pieces of human communication that universally command a very specific “shortcut” reaction?

Yup.

It is also possible to intentionally cue up those reactions in the brains of those around us in order to more effectively communicate. You see, the words discussed in this book are not merely buzzwords or catchphrases. They don’t depend on the listener’s status or upbringing. (In some cases, it doesn’t even matter if the person is listening.) They lose none of their potency when translated into other languages, and they are unaffected by cultural shifts. The phenomenon created by these magic words is a deeply human, instinctive response.

You now know something that 90 percent of the population either doesn’t fully understand or refuses to accept.

Whenever you speak, you’re affecting the brain of anyone who hears you. If you choose not to speak, your silence affects them. Your communication changes their very neurochemistry.

The people who refuse to accept this do so because they are afraid of being manipulative. Some don’t like the idea of influencing other people’s thoughts for supposed ethical reasons, and some just don’t want the responsibility. However, in order to be an effective communicator, you must embrace this fact: whether you intend to or not, you are manipulating the thoughts, feelings, and actions of others.

Don’t worry, you’re in good company. Here are some of the great manipulators of history: Mother Teresa, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Winston Churchill, Maya Angelou, Gandhi, Eleanor Roosevelt, and countless others who have used the people-moving power of words to ignite human rights movements, free slaves, empower the weak, and bring about political reform. They are great communicators, yes, but manipulators?

When we think of manipulation, we think of the not-so-great manipulators of history. People like Bernie Madoff, Frank Abagnale Jr., Benny Hinn, or anyone else who uses the same exact skills to sell bad used cars, acquit guilty defendants, or con the elderly out of millions. But in reality, both groups influenced the thoughts, emotions, and actions of lots of other people.

The difference, then, is in intention. No one doubts that communication is a powerful tool. And just like physical tools, communication can be used to build up or tear down. In the hands of Paul Bunyan, an ax is a helpful tool. In the hands of Lizzie Borden, it is a deadly weapon. It’s not the ax itself; it’s the intent of the person using the ax.

The rest of this book will provide you with powerful tools. Before using any of them, give yourself the “public relations test.” Ask yourself: “What would happen if this conversation were recorded and picked up by every major news outlet? How would the public feel about my intent? Would 95 percent of people agree that what I’m doing is the right thing?” When our intent is questionable, we tend to want to hide in the shadows. When our intent is positive, we have no problem shouting it from the rooftops.

Fortunately, most of us aren’t like Lizzie Borden. If you’re the type of person who would read a book like this, then I doubt your intention is to hurt other people with your words. Instead, the real danger for us comes when we end up like Chris Hanson.

In 2003, Chris Hanson was the punter for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Head coach Jack Del Rio tried motivating Chris and the rest of his team by placing a huge tree stump in the locker room along with an ax. Players were encouraged to hack away at the log a little bit each day in order to illustrate the value of persistence. “Keep chopping wood” was the metaphorical mantra.

Sometime around the fifth week of the NFL season, Hanson took a hack at the log and missed. Instead, he took a hunk out of his leg. So serious were his injuries that he was immediately rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery. Fortunately, Chris Hanson recovered and was able to continue punting footballs for the Jaguars.

In this case, the ax wasn’t really used as a tool and it wasn’t really used as a weapon. It was a powerful tool in the hands of an unskilled craftsman. That’s the dangerous middle ground where damage gets done and people get hurt. It’s the same with communication. It is a powerful tool, but all too often it is wielded by unskilled craftsmen.

A very good read By Robyn B I attempt to read business/communications books at least a few times a year, but I, more often than not, do not finish them. Magic Words was an exception to this rule. It only took me a few sittings over the course of a week to get through it, and I'm already planning to go back and review some of the sections while they are fresh in my mind.A few key items that drew me in:1) It's short and sweet. At only 132 pages, it was just long enough to give some very useful and interesting advice, while still keeping my (sometimes short-lived) attention. David's suggestions are all immediately actionable, and some include timelines to help ease you into bigger habit changes.2) It's funny. I personally appreciated the occasional jokes and the stories about his children. They were relevant and helped make the read more enjoyable.3) He includes summaries at the end of each chapter. As I neared the end of chapter one, I (not kidding you!) thought to myself "yikes, how am I ever going to remember everything here?" And I was extremely thankful a few pages later when I saw the first chapter summary. Those will be key for referring back to later. If you are looking for a quick read packed with some very useful communication advice, I'd definitely recommend checking this one out.

By Amazon Customer When speaking about leadership I always state “people are not logical, but they are predictable.” Therefore we must study human behavior and use this predictability to get things done. Even though we are predictable it does not mean we are not complex. Therefore this predictability is worthy of lifelong study, to which I jokingly refer as sharpening my Jedi Knight skills. As part of this lifelong study I read Magic Words. In the book the Tim David cites the seven magic words as "Yes - But - Because - Their Name - If - Help - Thanks" and provides a chapter on each.Below are my top ten highlights from Magic Words:.1. Only 7 percent of what we communicate to others has anything to do with the words that we say; the rest is transmitted through our vocal tone and body language (38 percent and 55 percent respectively)..2. However, in order to be an effective communicator, you must embrace this fact: whether you intend to or not, you are manipulating the thoughts, feelings, and actions of others..3. It appeared that priming the subjects with a question instead of a statement significantly improved their performance on a subsequent task..4. During every argument, negotiation, sales pitch, performance review, or platform presentation, you should strive to find a “yes” early on..5. ... Rye Gutierrez put “absolutely” at the top of his list of “The Top 25 Power Words.” He writes: “‘ Absolutely’ is one of the best words in the English language. It answers questions definitely . It ends doubt. It gives confidence to you as a problem-solver. It removes worry, doubt, and apprehension.” In short, it’s a “yes” on steroids..6. There are two halves to the But Effect: the But Eraser and the But Enhancer… For the listener, everything said before the word “but” is erased, and everything after the word “but” is enhanced..7. The formula is simple: something positive—something negative— something positive. Intellectually, they’ll get the “no” message, but it won’t hurt them as much emotionally..8. People make their decisions based on emotion first, and then they back them up with logic. Logic helps, but ultimately it’s feelings that move people to action..9. Notice— and this is important— the brain only wants to feel like it understands the cause. It doesn’t actually have to understand the cause..10. Philosopher David Hume once wrote: “Of all the crimes that human creatures are capable of committing, the most horrid and unnatural is ingratitude.” … Ingratitude is such a repulsive and unlikable trait that no one wants to be around an ungrateful person, let alone work for one.Dr. James T. That made this book instantly captivating, like a good magic show where you are waiting for the words to reveal themselves in some magical way. How you use the words in this book really matters. I found that I had been using some of the words in the wrong way and learned how to use them more effectively. In this book Tim David shows how simple words can have a big impact. After reading this book you may start wondering if you could use all the words in one sentence and control the world. I jest but this book was really intriguing. I also love the book cover and back cover. This book has "read me now" written all over it.~The Rebecca ReviewI received a free copy of this book for review. This review is my honest opinion.

Heins This is the story of Miriam, the daughter of an Englishman who married a Jewish woman and moved to the U.S. Miriam grew up in Monfort Hall on the Delaware. Her haughty older half sister, Evelyn, is her opposite--she is not in love with the outdoors and animals like Miriam. Miriam’s childhood friend, George Gaston, is disabled and Evelyn disdained them both. The mysterious next door neighbor, Basil Bainrothe, has a son who seems in love with Evelyn but when she refuses him, he proposes to Miriam. The reader knows this match will not turn out well. Superbly written but I gave it only 3 stars because it was so sad.

If you are hesitant about discussing salary, or reluctant to ask for higher pay, then this book is for you!

Read on your PC, Mac, smart phone, tablet, or Kindle device. The economic crash of 2008 created the single most fearful atmosphere in professional environments within the last half century or so. Job security became a meaningless term, and personal worth became a joke in recruiting circles. While you may or may not have been part of this wave of desperate employees hanging on by a string, the fact is that companies continue to sign on skilled personnel for far less than they are actually willing to pay. Moreover, there are legions of employees who stick with a company through thick and thin, valuing their own loyalty to the firm far above any acclaim or compensation which competitors could offer — only to never see that same loyalty rewarded, nor their contributions fully acknowledged. What started off as a passionate drive to do one's best (assuming the money would follow) often ends with someone's hard work getting exploited while they're receiving a salary far below what it could have been, had they only been comfortable enough discussing salary and insisting on higher pay. Negotiating salary remains one of the most awkward processes in the entire work force system — often resulting in people meekly accepting what they're offered, rather than what they're owed. And that's the reason for this book. While giving your all to your job is indeed admirable, use the words of wisdom in this book to finally help you get the salary you're truly owed for that dedication.

Here Is A Preview Of What You'll Learn...

  • Is Salary Just a Made-up Number?
  • Understanding the Value of Options
  • Preparing Yourself Before the Negotiation
  • Identifying the Magic Number
  • Setting the Stage Ahead of Time

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great info. By Tracey Pedersen This book is full of great information. It's set out well and well written too. I'm not in the market for negotiating my salary so it was easy for me to read and think about how realistic the steps here were. The book advocates taking a long term approach so don't think you'll read this and get your salary increase tomorrow :)

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A compatible salary is my right By Allen Money is the biggest motivation if you are working for someone else, other than the supplementary factor such as work environment, chances to grow, training etc. 2008 has been a hard hit and average salaries have declined. This gave companies a reason to persuade the job seeker to accept lower salaries than before. As the author says, that now there is no term as job security. It is very important to know how to negotiate your salary, so that you get paid enough against your work. One sad factor is the money saved is not for the company, it is shown by the so called recruiting managers as their savings to the company. This book has listed some of the concrete methods and preparatory steps which would help you to negotiate a better salary. The book has listed must know factors, salary break up in numbers, what to expect as numbers and how to put it forward as a requisition. Excellent tips!

Faith Carew was ten years old when Esther Eldridge came to visit her. Faith lived in a big comfortable log cabin on one of the sloping hillsides of the Green Mountains. Below the cabin was her father’s mill; and to Faith it always seemed as if the mill-stream had a gay little song of its own. She always listened for it when she awoke each morning.

I read them over and over and they made a great impression on me. Each story made me feel as though I were a part of history. I admired these young girls and their families so much!I have searched for years to find them and could find no one who had heard of them. I would recommend them for every young girl's library. They teach a lot about honesty, courage, and strength of character in addition to their historical value.I am so thrilled to see these books in print once more.

PDF Ebook Online Sinatra's Century: One Hundred Notes on the Man and His World, by David Lehman

In celebration of his one-hundredth birthday, a charming, irresistibly readable, and handsomely packaged look back at the life and times of the greatest entertainer in American history, Frank Sinatra.

Sinatra’s Century is an irresistible collection of one-hundred short reflections on the man, his music, and his larger-than-life story, by a lifetime fan who also happens to be one of the poetry world’s most prominent voices. David Lehman uses each of these short pieces to look back on a single facet of the entertainer’s story—from his childhood in Hoboken, to his emergence as “The Voice” in the 1940s, to the wild professional (and romantic) fluctuations that followed. Lehman offers new insights and revisits familiar stories—Sinatra’s dramatic love affairs with some of the most beautiful stars in Hollywood, including Lauren Bacall, Marilyn Monroe, and Ava Gardner; his fall from grace in the late 1940s and resurrection during the “Capitol Years” of the 1950s; his bonds with the rest of the Rat Pack; and his long tenure as the Chairman of the Board, viewed as the eminence grise of popular music inspiring generations of artists, from Bobby Darin to Bono to Bob Dylan.

Brimming with Lehman’s own lifelong affection for Sinatra, the book includes lists of unforgettable performances; engaging insight on what made Sinatra the model of American machismo—and the epitome of romance; and clear-eyed assessments of the foibles that impacted his life and work. Warm and enlightening, Sinatra’s Century is full-throated appreciation of Sinatra for every fan.

Sinatra's Century: One Hundred Notes on the Man and His World, by David Lehman

Review “I would particularly recommend Sinatra’s Century, a wonderful new book by the poet, editor, and essayist David Lehman. The book is at once short, fun to dip in and out of, full of quirky yet thoughtful lists of best albums and songs, with a poet’s appreciation of Sinatra’s craft.” (Ted Gioia, BookForum)“Selective, idiosyncratic and short. Some of the observations are familiar, but the best make fresh comparisons and connections. And Lehman is strong on the way Sinatra’s music continues to wend its way through the culture.” (Ben Yagoda, New York Times Book Review)“David Lehman gives us a more nuanced study —Sinatra’s Century. The book hits all the highlights –and dim days– of Sinatra’s career, starting with his days as a big-band singer who blossomed into an idol for teenage girls. Let this book cast its spell.” (Harry Levins, St. Louis Post-Dispatch)“Lehman, an established poet, widens the frame of reference, thereby expanding the emotional resonance of the songs…Lehman tells us what those facts mean.” (Sibbie O'Sullivan, Washington Post)“Like Wallace Stevens’s “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird,” Sinatra’s Century offers multiple views of a subject that fascinates its author. His accomplishment is in not just telling Sinatra’s story, but in describing the man’s effect on all of us, then and now.” (Tom Toce, Los Angeles Review of Books)“I would particularly recommend Sinatra’s Century, a wonderful new book by the poet, editor, and essayist David Lehman. The book is at once short, fun to dip in and out of, full of quirky yet thoughtful lists of best albums and songs, with a poet’s appreciation of Sinatra’s craft.” (Ken Tucker, Yahoo TV)“Mr. Lehman holds the reader by ferreting out of the voluminous files lots of choice quotes and anecdotes that reanimate Sinatra’s gamy lost world.” (Wall Street Journal)“Threaded through David Lehman’s 100 notes are captivating observations, histories, insights and reflections likely to serve as interesting dinner party conversations.” (Beverly Hills Courrier)“A poet and critic by trade, Lehman has composed a paean that devotes as much space to Sinatra’s personality as to his singing…Well-written and unfailingly pleasing to read.” (Commentary)

8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Another way to enjoy Sinatra. By Bob Walch If you still listen to Frank Sinatra's music you'll want to get a copy of this book to read up on the man himself. These very short "notes" are easy to digest and cover all facets of Sinatra's life and career as a singer. Read just one or two or a dozen at one sitting. And don't forget, of course, to have The Chairman of the Board provide some background tunes!

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. but doesn't really provide a very good explanation for why he wrote this one other than ... By Noel S. Selegzi Lehman admits that writing yet another book on Frank Sinatra requires some justification, but doesn't really provide a very good explanation for why he wrote this one other than that its well-timed publication date. That said, this is a very enjoyable, quick read, that inspired me to listen to some Sinatra recordings with a better understanding of them than I had previously. This thin volume stands in marked contrast to the Kaplan's two-part doorstop of a biography. Some of the "notes" that Lehman compiles aren't longer than a sentence, a couple of just quotes from other authors, and remarkably a few of the later ones just repeat verbatim earlier notes (if you read the book cover to cover in one sitting, which won't take more than a couple of hours, the repetitions come across as just lazy writing).A gifted writer, Lehman is at his best is in describing how Sinatra's recordings are different from other singer's renditions of the same tunes. The notes are focused more on Sinatra's early year and work up until his brief "retirement" in the early 1970's. He doesn't sugar-coat Sinatra's life or avoid mention of various scandals, but overall this book is still best described as hagiography.I got enough enjoyment out of reading the book to perhaps give it another star, but overall this really just reads like a compilation CDs that gets slapped together for a special anniversary. I think Pete Hamill's Why Sinatra Matters, which Lehman cites approvingly on several occasions, is the better short introduction to Sinatra.

Lehman brings his extraordinary gifts as a poet and scholar to bear on his iconic subject and in so doing makes Sinatra spring back to life in a way that no conventional biography ever could. Comprised of a series of a hundred short texts---stories, anecdotes, essays, reflections---the books peels back all of the great singer's many layers, giving readers a multi-dimensional take on one of America's most contradictory, complex, and enduring artists. I think you'll find this book an absorbingly insightful and pleasurable experience, even if you're not a Sinatra fan. This is one of those books you savor, reading it slowly, hoping to never reach the last page.

Arthur sat in the library of the theological seminary at Pisa, looking through a pile of manuscript sermons. It was a hot evening in June, and the windows stood wide open, with the shutters half closed for coolness. The Father Director, Canon Montanelli, paused a moment in his writing to glance lovingly at the black head bent over the papers. "Can't you find it, carino? Never mind; I must rewrite the passage. Possibly it has got torn up, and I have kept you all this time for nothing."

Although I didn't fully understand the political side of the novel, it left me crying over the story for weeks. I have reread it many times since, and it has never failed to move me. The authur explores human nature in all ways possible and touches your heart with an intensity. Arthur, a young Christian in the 19th Century when Italy was under Austrian rule, is the hero of this book. The 19 year old boy's protected world is broken when he learns that his tutor - Father of church - is actually his birth father. At the same time that he finds he has been betrayed by the only person he trusts he is mistaken by the only girl he loves. Not wanting to face his father and explain to Gemma, the shy and gentle Arthur leaves for South Africa, making everyone believe he has taken his own life. In a new environment he is thrown into the harsh realities of life, his body and soul hardend by human cruelty. 15 years later he returns to Italy where The Gadfly is born as a respected potential revolitionary. Having been through so much pain and body injuries, Gemma didn't recognise her beloved Arthur but sees him as a commorade in the dangerous revolutionary life. The Gadfly's role as a rebellious fighter places him and his father - now a cardinal - on opposite sides of the political stage. All emotions are explored when the father has to choose between his long lost son and his Lord on the cross. The baldness of the Authur takes you through a man's life where he is transformed from a naive believer of God to a sly fighter who hates God for having his father's love. The ending is so moving it will make you look at life in a whole different perspective. This is the best book I have ever read and I recommand it to everyone who loves reading, no matter when type of books they like.

This book is great for several reasons: 1)this is a romantic quest in the best sense of the word, with the protagonist larger than life, 2)this is a book about moral and religious choices that I hope none ever have to make, and the way different people may follow different paths, 3)this is a book about love in all its forms: love for the country, love between a man and a woman, love between a father and a son. It's about love for life, even when death seems a better alternative. It's too bad that this book is out of stock - but if you ever find it on the Auctions or Ebay, hurry to buy it. This is an epic no one will be able to resist.

Yang The novel of "The Gadfly" in Chinese and the movie bearing the same name, are two brilliant works of "The Gadfly" I first encountered, and loved so much, while I was in my teens, although my young age was somewhat restricted me from comprehending the conspiracies and struggles inside the hero. After so many years I finally had a chance to read the original novel by Ms. Voynich. I was thrilled. Many details were recalled and many emotional moments were re-experienced, only this time it was with more intensity and inspirations, and maybe more tears. An epic of revolutions, religions, and moralities, this novel digs deeply about human beings and their loves - the love for their country; the love for God; the love between father and son; and the love between lovers... If its arousing power of revolt appealed me the most many years ago, now stronger the resonance in my heart is the hero's soul, his dilemmas and his complexities. From Arthur, a devotee to God, to the Gadfly, an unswerving atheist, the renouncement was triggered by the betrayal of his confessor (Father Cardi) and the deceit of his "Padre", his actual birth father, the Cardinal Montanelli, intensified through all the unimaginable sufferings (emotionally and physically) he endured, and firmed along the path of his pursuing for true believes. To me the fact that the Gadfly lived his most valuable years, and finally died, as an atheist is more intriguing in how the belief being rooted than the belief itself. In reading this book, it gave me great satisfaction in meditating over character the Gadfly, the more so because he was a human being, and a very sentimental one. With Ms. Voynich's feminine touch, the relationships, love relationships, were portrayed with immense depth and delicacy. The connection between Montanelli and the Gadfly truly stimulates me with the thoughts on God and his son, Jesus Christ. The love between Gadfly and Gemma, full of pain and pathos it was, is the purest and the most beautiful love I could ever imagine."Then am I a happy fly, if I live or if I die", the short verse written at the end of the letter which the Gadfly wrote to Gemma, just before his execution, is very simple, but profoundly encapsulates the Gadfly's life, one that was so short, and yet so fulfilling, and one that's likely to leave you reflecting on yours, too.

The house on the hill showed lights only upon the first floor—in the spacious reception hall, the dining room, and those more or less mysterious purlieus thereof from which emanate disagreeable odors and agreeable foods. From behind a low bush across the wide lawn a pair of eyes transferred to an alert brain these simple perceptions from which the brain deduced with Sherlockian accuracy and Raffleian purpose that the family of the president of The First National Bank of—Oh, let's call it Oakdale—was at dinner, that the servants were below stairs and the second floor deserted.

The Oakdale Affair, by Edgar Rice Burroughs

About the Author Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) is the creator of Tarzan, one of the most popular fictional characters of all time, and John Carter, hero of the Barsoom science fiction series. Burroughs was a prolific author, writing almost 70 books before his death in 1950, and was one of the first authors to popularize a character across multiple media, as he did with Tarzan s appearance in comic strips, movies, and merchandise. Residing in Hawaii at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941, Burroughs was drawn into the Second World War and became one of the oldest war correspondents at the time. Edgar Rice Burroughs s popularity continues to be memorialized through the community of Tarzana, California, which is named after the ranch he owned in the area, and through the Burrough crater on Mars, which was named in his honour.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A departure for ERB, has the feel of old style writing, a decent crime/mystery story By Jadecat I am a long time Burroughs fan, mainly Tarzan and his Mars series, so when I saw this one available for free on the kindle I snapped it up as I had never heard of it before. Unbeknown to me, it is the 3rd book in the Mucker series. Well, I found that out when I was 80% through the book, and I suppose it might have made the main character, Bridge, a little more understandable. Truthfully, if I had known it was the 3rd book, I wouldn't have read it, but now that I finished it, it really didn't matter. The book starts off with a bang, but you don't have much background information, so you slowly figure out who the people are as you go along. The book is the story of Bridge, a self proclaimed tramp/hobo, who comes across different people in one night and tries to help some and tries to protect others. It involves a haunted house, gypsies, bears and a variety of criminals and country folk. It is a crime story that gets solved in the last few pages. I think the storyline occurs over a span of 2 to 3 days. The style of writing gives the book an old feel to it, but I suppose it should. Not my favorite novel of ERB's, but it is a good story and goes quickly. Short and sweet.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Definite Period Piece By David Stapleton A mystery/adventure novel that I found reminiscent of the work of Agatha Christi. I would call this a definite departure from the usual ERB fare in some ways, and in others more of the same. The style is much like everything else Burroughs wrote, however, rather than the exotic locales of Mars, Venus or the African jungle we are treated to a story from the American heartland.Bridge from the Mucker returns, making this somewhat of a sequel or spin-off. The story is predictable, but still fun to read. This is a definite period piece, from the settings to the characters to the dialog. Burroughs even gives us a gypsy. This one is just fun to read.P-)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Book. Bad copy of the book. By Crimsonaro I hate to rate a Burroughs book so low. I've been a fan of his works for a very long time. However, this version of the book is incomplete. The previous reviewer stated the book jumped right into the action with no back story. That is because this version is missing the first several pages. I happened to have two versions on my Droid Kindle app. and accidentally switched to this version after starting the other. The other version is the complete Mucker trillogy for $0.99. Well worth the price for three very good books. If you want free, this version of the book will stand on it's own minus the back story, but if the back story is important to you, get the full version.
