We did not know, when we started from home in Venice, on the 8th of November, 1864, that we had taken the longest road to Rome. We thought that of all the proverbial paths to the Eternal City that leading to Padua, and thence through Ferrara and Bologna to Florence, and so down the sea-shore from Leghorn to Civita Vecchia, was the best, the briefest, and the cheapest. Who could have dreamed that this path, so wisely and carefully chosen, would lead us to Genoa, conduct us on shipboard, toss us four dizzy days and nights, and set us down, void, battered, and bewildered, in Naples? Luckily, "The moving accident is not my trade,"

Italy before Frommer By ilprofessore William Dean Howells, an immensely influential figure in the history of American letters, now almost unjustly forgotten, wrote a biography of Lincoln, and was rewarded by the president with a consulship in Venice. He and his Bostonian wife travelled around Italy in the 1860s, and he reported what he saw in this excellent book, an entire chapter of which is devoted to the gruesome but fascinating history of the Gonzagas of Mantua--murderers, cutthroats and thieves, but at more peaceful times, patrons of the arts. [One of the more human G's commissioned Mantegna to do one of the great frescos of all time, still on view in Mantova today.] If you think we are living in a lousy world, you have only to be reminded by Howell of what so-called humanity did to one another once upon a time. The great paintings and frescoes, we travel to see, were only a fringe benefit of a terrible turbulent time in the history of Italia. The atrocities are forgotten by most of us, and the great art survives. Have we progressed since those days? Not much I suspect. The tyrants are still everywhere, and great art is not flourishing. The patrons are gone, but the wars go on and on.

Italian Circuit By propertius Once again we have a very perceptive and amusing account of Mr. Howells views and opinions of Italy while he was on tour. This is not a travelogue although the visitor to Italy would do well to make note of some of the less noted sites of today that he mentions. What is interesting is the likes and dislikes of this gentleman and his own particular prejudices in a world that no longer exists. Protestant missionary schools in Naples, the early excavations of Pompeii, dirty Rome, etc. will enchant the reader to see how his world has changed. Even his personal prejudices are a delight preferring the Basilica of St. Paul to that of St. Peter. He is one of the few writers I have come across that find Genoa a delightful city to visit.Too much to note, but let the reader experience this book as a cultural tour de force of mid-nineteenth century Italy and observe how that has morphed into what we visit today.
