Tuggy It's sappy, inner-monologue driven, sensationalistic, rather shallow Christian fiction, and yet I ended up enjoying it. It's no worse than most other fiction of that era, though not really better than any. If you've read Louisa M. Alcott's "An Old-Fashioned Girl" you'll have a *little* idea of the kind of book this is.What finally drew me in, despite my cynical intentions and the mediocre writing, was the story itself. A young, beautiful socialite tries to make a fool out of a young missionary by pretending to be good in order to win his affections - but she gets a lot more than she bargained for.Surprisingly, both characters go through a good little bit of development. While the girl is still very "heathen" she confronts the missionary about the distaste she feels for his sermons - how she wouldn't want to know God if God was like the way the missionary spoke of him - and the guy actually listens to her and mends his ways. I won't say more and ruin the story on the off-chance that one of you will read it. But I've actually read it twice, so I'll recommend - but read it through inter-library loan before you buy.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Provides entertainment with truly valuable Christian teaching By Maggie Jarpey The love story was entertaining. I enjoyed it. And the Christian teaching was excellent, showing how not to share your faith with others and also how best to do it. There is a scene where someone (I won't say who) gives herself to the Lord Jesus Christ because of something she finds in the Bible about Him, and the way she talks about it brought tears to my eyes--it showed how lovely He is, and she saw His loveliness, His strength and tenderness, and His loving heart. And then the author showed how the glow of conversion will wear off if difficulties come unless your commitment is true and deep and based on a determination to obey as best you can--and to receive His loving forgiveness when you slip. I read 19th-century Christian novels because when they are good, they give me more than entertainment--they make me think about my Lord and Savior and talk to Him and draw me closer. Some of Payson Roe's books do that for me, and others don't. This one did.

Okay, but not one of the best stories of Edward Payson Roe By deborah I disagree with the first reviewer that this story or style is "sappy" (neither is it an internal monologue), but it's not Edward Payson Roe's best writing. The heroine does not have a lot of depth, and it's hard to stay engaged as she gradually comes to compare the strong, kind character of the man she intends to humiliate with the shallow, weak character of the man she is expected to marry.All of the secondary characters stay secondary. The author himself observes how Frank, the aspiring minister and missionary, has no good reason to be less concerned about the souls of the characters who are ordinary looking and have weak personalities than he is about beautiful, mischievous Lottie, but he never does bother to pray for or reach out to them - his attention remains concentrated exclusively on Lottie.The story turns on three points - Lottie's growing, reciprocal attraction towards Frank and awakening awareness of her own weak, selfish character; Frank's first sermon, in which he paints a terrible picture of a jealous God who constantly punishes us "for our own good", with neither love, compassion or mercy - followed by Lottie's excoriation of his expectation that anyone should love such a God or hope to help others by acting the same way; and Lottie's determination to prove that she is no longer the shallow, deceptive person she was when they met, and has sufficient stuffing to be a missionary wife.The scene where she proves her stuffing seemed to me to drag on in a very fantastic manner and I wondered what on earth the author was thinking.This is an interesting story and stories by Christian authors of this period are my favorites, but I didn't find this to be one of the best.

About the Author Ray Benson cofounded Asleep at the Wheel in 1970 and is the only remaining original band member. When he isn’t playing with the Wheel, he’s producing records, TV shows, and commercials; acting in movies; doing voice-over work; running a studio; and raising funds for numerous charities. He was named “Official Texas State Musician” in 2004 and “Texan of the Year” in 2011.A former contributing editor for No Depression magazine, David Menconi has been the music critic at the Raleigh News & Observer since 1991. 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Great read By Jim Just finished the book. The type of book you cannot put down as it is so easy to read and enjoyable. Ray writes of his childhood through a few years back. Some funny stories in the book, and some surprising stuff. Won't give away the details but it is a great book not only on the band and its iterations, but of the music industry itself.As a big fan of the band it was interesting to hear the background story of the band- the good times, the lean times, and the leaner times. The only down side was there was not much about the more recent people- Elizabeth, Eddie, Jason, etc, who I more remember as a fan of maybe 15- 20 years now. But overall a great read, written as I would imagine Ray would.

What's interesting it that one always thinks things are easy for these guys and life on the road is nothing but money and fame. But, Ray Benson describes the true hardships of having to manage a band, negotiate and maintain record contracts, plus handle a normal home life with a wife and kids. The many hardships and disappointments over the career of the band would have caused most bands to hang it up. Ray, on the other hand, chose to tough it out and seek his passion of continuing the legacy of his hero and mentor Bob Wills, the leader of the legendary band, "Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys". Starting out in the 1970's, they were so broke, they had to search for spare change in their couch to find enough gas money to make it to the next gig. Through years of hard work and dedication to keep Western Swing alive, he and the band have made major strides over the last decade (not to mention 9 Grammy Awards). Read this book... because it's a great inspiration to see how AATW has stuck to their original passion and continued their excellence over all these with continuing the "Bob Wills" tradition.

Asleep at the Wheel and Ray Benson are “one” so you get the autobiography of both with this book By Steve Ramm [[VIDEOID:7bf0a02883a4174c76c4ababa72f1ae8]] Asleep at the Wheel and Ray Benson are “one” so you get the auto bio of bothI’m a big fan of the “Texas Swing”/country/ “alternative” band Asleep at the Wheel which has been making fine music for over 50 years. Though 6’ 7” Ray Benson was just one of the “founders”, it is he who took the reins early on in the band’s career and made sure that – in good times and bad – the band continued. As you’ll find out in this short 175-page, easy to read a chapter at a time, book, he even put the band ahead of his first marriage and two sons. But he admits it and one of his sons now runs Benson’s studio in Austin.The guy had an interesting early life growing up in the Jewish section of Northeast Philadelphia (one of his classmates would go on to be Israel’s Prime Minister (Benjamin Netanyahu) and AATW’s career often intertwined with at of the Berkeley, CA band Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen.Benson is honest about his ADD and his alcohol and drug problems and the fact that he still (like his fellow Texan, Willie Nelson) loves his “weed”.Reading the book is like sitting in as room listening to Benson tell his story.I was lucky enough a few weeks ago to meet him at the ceremony when he was inducted into Philly’s Music Walk of Fame. (He was introduced at the evening gala by one of the original members of AATW, Lucky Oceans, who flew in from his current home in Perth Australia. See the video of Ray that I’ve posted with this review.There are a dozen or so photos in black and white, showing Benson at various points in his life.If you are a fan of the band, you’ll definitely want to read this book. Great poetry, interesting philosophy By Souvik Mitra Much like the philosophy it expounds, this particular translation of the Tao Te Ching structurally comes very close to the notion of being & inaction. Shrouded in mystique, staccato, & laconic, this translation is almost designed to be true to the spirit of the original script - which I obviously have not read, but that's what it feels like - without trying to extricate any meaning or reason from the original verse.Having said that though, there are certain themes that flow across chapters. The ideas of all-pervasiveness, malleability, subsistence, inexhaustibility, emptiness & non-contention are scattered throughout the chapters, in bit & pieces, part of a verse here in the opening & the qualities of sage somewhere else. And for me it is best not to try & decipher each verse as it comes across, but rather to envision the holistic symbolism that these ideas represent. In doing so, I believe there is better chance of associating meaning to the philosophy than to break it down to its constituent parts, extract meaning, & add it all up.Having read the Geeta before, I find quite a few similarities between the Tao Te Ching & the Geeta. But having read the Geeta before, I compared constantly - which probably wasn't the right thing to do - & found the Geeta to be a more compelling philosophy.Regardless, this translation is a tremendous work of art & creates poetry of the highest order.@souvikstweets

26 of 29 people found the following review helpful. An excellent book! By Megan I was assigned to read "Much Ado About Nothing" for my block class, and my initial thought was, Oh, how boring. I don't want to read Shakespeare. I won't even be able to understand it. Let me tell you, I was very wrong! This book was excellent- one of the best I've ever read. It contained romance, humor, comedy, and drama- so many diverse qualities that I rarely find in books these days! The main characters, Beatrice and Benedick, add humor and warmth to the book. They argue and insult each other, yet they are really in love. Hero and Claudio are the lovebirds, but the evil Don John tries to get in the way of this with a deceitful plan. Even though this book was written centuries ago, the main themes still apply to today, (such as the Beatrice and Benedick theme). That is why this book is a classic. Oh, and understanding it isn't a problem, either. This was my first Shakespeare book ever (I'm only 14), and I understood the plot, characters, and the theme. I enjoyed it at the same time. So order this book today. You won't regret it!

By Brianna Rhywhen I am here to do my part in diminishing the value of all the one- and three- star reviews posted here, the authors of which are clearly the same person or all from the same class of children too young to read the play. Amazon visitors reading these should know two things: the reviewer is a twit, and this play is wonderful.I, for one, am a sucker for romances; if you are, Beatrice and Benedick will make the play worthwhile. Predictability be damned, they were an adorable couple. The main couple, Hero and Claudio, are boring; the other one will make you swoon. Beatrice and Benedick are funny, clever, and stubbornly reluctant to admit they love each other. To wit, they're perfect for one another.I have read two contradictory criticisms regarding the language in the play on Amazon: that the language is too simple for Shakespeare's standards, and that the language is too difficult. The latter was from the kid's reviews; for everyone else, the language is not so difficult to decipher that you need to avoid it. The Folger edition, at least, has one page of notes for every page of text, noting both puzzling references to Elizabethan beliefs, such as that sights draw blood from the heart, and language problems caused by the hundreds of years between Shakespeare's time and ours. The editors do all the work for you. You have no excuse. (Oh, and that the language is too simple: Bah. It's Shakespeare. That's impossible. I loved all the double entendres; this play was very witty.)One criticism I somewhat agree with is that the plot is boring. Hero and Claudio, being the main couple, get much time, and I didn't care much about Don John's vengeance, but at least half of my favorite couple was usually present, and by no means do Hero and Claudio's plot monopolize the story. Much Ado About Nothing is often genuinely entertaining, which is what kept me interested. The plot's not the point here, it's the dialogue.In sum, the language is poetic, but not so much so that it reads like Klingon, the romance will make you sigh, and the plot is at least good enough to keep Beatrice or Benedick in most of the time. Don't let the previous reviewers deter you: Read it.

Unusable and Eclectic Ideas Ruin this Important Edition By Desertmartin Claire McEachern's Introduction, notes and commentary on Much Ado About Nothing suffer from the decline in real scholarship over the last few years. Previous introductory materials in Arden edition have always built on the solid scholarship of the past, adding new ideas and research as integrated parts of the growing body of knowledge associated with Shakespeare scholarship. McEachern's abandons most of the valid accepted readings of this play to wander rather aimlessly down the tunnel of self-promoting feminist, postmodern eclecticism. As a college professor, I am dismayed to see Arden turn to such contemporary and popular approaches at the exclusion of real context. The Arden editions have always set the standard, but are now falling prey to the subjective, personalized, even vindictive vents of the academic few. The field of Shakespeare criticism, unfortunately, is in danger of collapsing in on itself, and becoming completely irrelevant to anything other than these marginalized interest. More specifically, McEachern's search for sources for the play becomes a labyrinthine exposé of speculative inference and unrelated texts, ignoring primary sources for a new historicist fascination with the obscure. The tenor of her subjective argument about the play is captured in her overdone attack on Benedick as misogynist and Beatrice's rendering as the shrew. The problem, obviously, is the imbalance here; the feminist objective reduces a complex and humorous interplay to victimizer and victim, both seen from one perspective. Ignoring the historical contexts of the play, she focuses instead on marginal texts that only partially relate to the central themes of the play, to the social context, and to the audience's understanding both of Shakespeare's environs and present-day concerns. McEachern eventually backs herself into ridiculous corners, such as pages of arguing how women of the period who were too talkative (such as Beatrice) were labeled promiscuous, only to concede that Beatrice is never so labeled or even considered such. Her complete overblown fascination with the few humorous "cuckold" references in the play channel her criticism into a reductive and extremely limited analysis of minor factors in the play, while she completely avoids the important social considerations of marriage, challenges to gender roles, and the place of female intelligence in Shakespeare's society. It is a sign of the worst kind of scholarship, that her introduction to Much Ado About Nothing runs to nearly 145 pages, once the length of only the Hamlet introduction among the Arden editions (the only play, because of its complexity, demanding such a lengthy explication). Ego gets the better of scholarship here, and buries the important and necessary social, political and cultural ideas associated with this play. If McEachern's editing and commentary is a sign of things to come from Arden, they can expect to lose readers on all levels who find such marginalized approaches to important scholarship outside the interest of students and professionals alike.
