Love and Longing. Sacrifice and Betrayal Ruarc Ó Treasaigh, the son of a royal Gaelic chieftain, obsesses over the mystery surrounding his older brother, Manus. Why did Manus leave Ireland and what brought him back? What happened to Manus in the seven years he stayed away? How did he become the coldly fearless, remote, and occasionally cruel man who fascinates and dominates the folk of Clan Ó Treasaigh? Ireland, in the opening decades of the 1500s, chafes under the yoke of England’s Tudor kings. Torn between his love for Nuala FitzStephen and his adoration for his brother, Ruarc navigates the dangerous waters of deception, treachery and rebellion. When Manus scandalizes the clan by conducting a tempestuous affair with Áine Mac Gaman, the Witch of the Mountain, and later embroils his people in the Silken Thomas FitzGerald Rebellion, Ruarc must chose: will he follow wherever Manus leads, or will he carve his own path? And can both brothers fend off childhood demons and lay the ghosts of the past in time to save their Irish Gaelic culture, their heritage and their people from the ravages of foreign invaders? Set in the wilds of western Connacht where the Otherworld stands as near as the next border and the Faerie Folk and the Dead are as likely to walk the land as are living mortals, Speak Of A Wolf brings to life the heroism and suffering, passion and romance, folklore and myth of sixteenth-century Ireland. Fans of Outlander, The Taming of the Queen, and The Irish Princess will enjoy Speak Of A Wolf.

A Page Turner By Jeanne Klusman This novel is the first of a series, and after finishing it, I’m definitely looking forward to the second.“Speak of a Wolf” is hard to put down. The lives of Ruarc, Nuala, Manus and Áine, pulled me into the story. Their society and culture fascinated me, as did their knotty relationships and the backdrop of political and religious chaos in Tudor Ireland.Ms. Klusman brings to life the mountains and glens, islands and bays of rural western Ireland. She captures the bustle, turmoil and excitement of sixteenth-century Galway, Dublin, and London. You will smell the sea, feel the salt mist on your face, and shiver at the cry of the banshee.“Speak of a Wolf” looks into the lives ordinary people in extraordinary situations. The choices the characters must make when forced by thorny and complex circumstances propel the novel along. It is a book about family, sacrifice, and loyalty, about loss, transitions, and the passing of tradition.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be drawn into and immersed in a different time and place.

First-rate historical fiction By Amazon Customer This work of historical fiction sets a moody tone and its complex themes draw the reader in and don’t let go. The well-constructed plot provided a number of compelling twists and turns. The author brought the story to a most satisfying conclusion while still leaving room for (I hope) several sequels. The characters were believably complex and fascinatingly flawed, yet also sympathetic. I found the language to give the pleasant hint of period speech without being burdensome. The author made the time and place really come alive for me.I enjoyed this book tremendously and could see it as an absorbing film or even television series. I look forward to future works by Ms Klusman.Review based on book preview.

By Don & Bernie Himelrick This novel takes place in during the reigns of King Henry VII and his son, King Henry VIII, who style themselves kings of England and lords of Ireland. Rebellion and religious reformation in England and Ireland form the background of the narrative. The main character is Ruarc Jarlath Ó Treasaigh, seventeen years old at the start of the story.Manus, injured by an abusive father runs away from home, leaving Ruarc, his adoring younger brother whose life he saved when just a small child, behind. Everyone believes Manus dead except Ruarc, who is proven correct when Manus returns unexpectedly in time to save Ruarc’s life for the second time. Manus soon upsets the balance and routine of his family, clan, and the local people. Some love him, some hate him, but none can ignore him.Ruarc admires his brother, but fears for him as well. A head injury has left Manus disconnected from society and family and he seems to have developed a dangerous, possibly murderous streak as well. Ruarc often feels torn between a desire to emulate his brother and a need to protect Manus from his enemies and himself.Ruarc and Manus’s cousin Séamus, is jealous because Gaelic Brehon Law prohibits him from becoming clan chief due to a lame leg. Séamus believes his superior intelligence makes him the best leader, and he is willing to subvert clan tradition and form alliances with clan enemies to improve his station in life. Both Ruarc and Séamus are in love with Nuala FitzStephen, daughter of a neighboring family with whom the Ó Treasaigh clan has an age-old rivalry. Manus, meanwhile, embarks on a relationship with Áine Mac Gaman, the Witch of the Mountain, who claims to descend from the “sídhe”, or the Faerie Folk. When Manus decides to join the cause of Silken Thomas FitzGerald and involve his clan in FitzGerald’s rebellion against the English Crown, Ruarc joins him on a dangerous tightrope of treason and political intrigue, risking his life and future happiness for the sake of his brother’s vendetta against the English. This is a captivating read about brotherhood, hero-worship, and redemption. The author weaves an intriguing tapestry of fictional and historical events, entwining the lives of the fictional characters with those of historical figures, engrossing the reader with romance, intrigue, and a dash of the paranormal. This review is based on an advance preview version.
