Freckles came down the corduroy that crosses the lower end of the Limberlost. At a glance he might have been mistaken for a tramp, but he was truly seeking work. He was intensely eager to belong somewhere and to be attached to almost any enterprise that would furnish him food and clothing.

I have continued to reread it frequently. It is an inspiring book about a young man who refuses to give up--until he thinks he has to. He thinks he canot pursue the woman he loves because he thinks he is illegitimate. This, at the time this book was written, was considered a terribly shameful thing. But the woman will not let him give up and dies. The conclusion will surprise you.

I have a friend that told me about it, so I was not sure when I started the book, but it is a very well written story, with lots of surprises and a wonderful, happy ending.

A Prisoner in Fairyland (The Book That 'Uncle Paul' Wrote), by Algernon Blackwood

About the Author Algernon Blackwood (1869-1951) was born into a well-to-do Kentish family. His parents, converts to a Calvinistic sect, led an austere life, ill-suited to their dreamy and sensitive son. During adolescence, he became fascinated by hypnotism and the supernatural and, on leaving university, studied Hindu philosophy and occultism. Later, he was to draw on these beliefs and experiences in his writing. Sent away to Canada at the age of twenty, his attempts at making a living were wholly unsuccessful and shortly after his return to England, he began to write. The Empty House and Other Ghost Stories, published in 1906, was followed by a series of psychic detective stories, featuring John Silence, 'physician extraordinary'. His reputation as one of the greatest exponents of supernatural fiction began to grow. Chiefly known for his ghost stories, Blackwood wrote in many different forms within the genre. His most personal works, however, are his 'mystical' novels, for example The Centaur, where he explores man's empathy with the forces of the universe. Blackwood also wrote children's fiction. A Prisoner in Fairyland was adapted into the play (later the musical), Starlight Express. Later in life, Blackwood turned to writing radio plays, and in 1947 he began a new career on BBC TV telling ghost stories. He received a knighthood in 1949.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. but this managed to generate all of the conflict and tension using happiness and a sense of wonder By mousewife Seldom have I ever read something that resonated for me on such a strange, spiritual level. Speaking as a writer myself, I understood and was inspired by this story, yet at the same time, was transported to a world of childlike wonder. Tension and conflict will hold a reader's interest, but this managed to generate all of the conflict and tension using happiness and a sense of wonder. This is one of the most beautiful, magical books I've ever read in my life and I've read a lot. If you want to return to the charm of the Hundred Acre Woods, the Land of Oz, and Fantasia through this 19th man's return to childhood and childhood mythology, I cannot recommend this book enough.

Yes, many works are out of copyright, but so what? You are still stocking and delivering these titles for free or low cost. Where else could I possibly get 2,500 pages of literature for 99 cents or free?! This is a wonderful service Amazon, Thank you, Thank you!! Many titles, esp. out of copyright ones, are available elsewhere on the internet, but WHY would I want to go elsewhere when you provide such an excellent and easy to use repository??As for our UK friend, perhaps you could google the term "proxy server".Thank you Amazon.

Mostsalespeople don't want pages and pages of padding, they want simple tipsdelivered in an effective way that they can implement with ease. That isexactly what Simon Lofgren offers in this excellent book.- Andy Lopata, leading business network strategist and bestselling authorThis is a book that every sales person needs to read, but moreimportantly, needs to implement. This book contains great concepts thateveryone in sales should heed!- Stephan Schiffman, sales coach, motivational speaker and bestselling author

About the Author Simon Löfgren, born 1990 in Stockholm, Sweden, is a self-taught star salesman who went from a job as a train driver in the Stockholm Metro to being a business owner within a two year period. Simon has always reflected upon the driving forces behind obtaining and maintaining success and regards great entrepreneurs as the most important sources of inspiration for new salespeople and businesspeople today.Simon Says - I have always had a passion for the written word and for passing on knowledge on sales, leadership and entrepreneurship. There are a lot of subjects to explore for new entrepreneurs, but I have always experienced the threshold being too high for a lot of people to obtain the necessary knowledge, which discourages a lot of men and women from becoming self-made businesspeople. The knowledge conveyed to them is too complex, and it should not be that way. Therefor my call as an author is to make knowledge of sales, leadership and entrepreneurship easily available, to inspire more people to pursue their dreams.Simon's official accounts in social media - @simonlofgrenswe -

NATIONAL BESTSELLER The long-awaited memoir from John Fogerty, the legendary singer-songwriter and creative force behind Creedence Clearwater Revival.Creedence Clearwater Revival is one of the most important and beloved bands in the history of rock, and John Fogerty wrote, sang, and produced their instantly recognizable classics: "Proud Mary," "Bad Moon Rising," "Born on the Bayou," and more. Now he reveals how he brought CCR to number one in the world, eclipsing even the Beatles in 1969. By the next year, though, Creedence was falling apart; their amazing, enduring success exploded and faded in just a few short years. FORTUNATE SON takes readers from Fogerty's Northern California roots, through Creedence's success and the retreat from music and public life, to his hard-won revival as a solo artist who finally found love.

A driven one who believes he has been ripped off through his original recording contract with Fantasy. One who could not sing love songs because he missed out on it as a child and mostly through adulthood. I always wondered why there were no love songs with CCR and now I know. Like many musicians the world over he was probably keen to get a contract and would have signed his life away, which he and the other CCR members virtually did. He became somewhat bitter and when he did get legal advice it went against common sense and he had to pay out more. Somewhat mixed in his comments about his three partners in CCR one gets the feeling they were not as committed or as talented as him and he became the driving force. To many he was a control freak but if he stayed back in the shadows nothing happened. He takes us through his solo years including the ten long years where he basically became a hermit. Then he met his second wife Julie and transformation came. Since meeting her he has put out albums containing love songs and its a revelation to hear him like that. And a great one thing it is too.I've seen him with CCR and on his own and he is certainly one of the great musicians of his time. His book is very open and a change from other glossy similar types.I enjoyed reading the book and felt an empathy for him and glad that today he is generally at peace with himself and the world. This is a good book and you can hear his voice in the words as they jump out of the page at you, like the bullfrog in a green river.

MY Scotch-Irish grandfather was a Covenanter. He kept his whisky in a high cupboard under lock and key. If any of his children were around when he took his night-cap, he would admonish them against the use of alcohol. When he read in the Bible about Babylon, he thought of Paris. To Grandpa all "foreign places" were pretty bad. But Paris? His children would never go there. The Scotch-Irish are awful about wills. But life goes so by opposites that when my third baby, born in Paris a year before the war, was christened in the Avenue de l'Alma Church, Grandpa Brown's children and grandchildren and some of his great-grandchildren were present.

"...The Empress Nü Wo, (the goddess of works,) in fashioning blocks of stones, for the repair of the heavens, prepared, at the Ta Huang Hills and Wu Ch'i cave, 36,501 blocks of rough stone, each twelve chang in height, and twenty-four chang square. Of these stones, the Empress Wo only used 36,500; so that one single block remained over and above, without being turned to any account. This was cast down the Ch'ing Keng peak. This stone, strange to say, after having undergone a process of refinement, attained a nature of efficiency, and could, by its innate powers, set itself into motion and was able to expand and to contract. When it became aware that the whole number of blocks had been made use of to repair the heavens, that it alone had been destitute of the necessary properties and had been unfit to attain selection, it forthwith felt within itself vexation and shame, and day and night, it gave way to anguish and sorrow. One day, while it lamented its lot, it suddenly caught sight, at a great distance, of a Buddhist bonze and of a Taoist priest coming towards that direction. Their appearance was uncommon, their easy manner remarkable. When they drew near this Ch'ing Keng peak, they sat on the ground to rest, and began to converse. But on noticing the block newly-polished and brilliantly clear, which had moreover contracted in dimensions, and become no larger than the pendant of a fan, they were greatly filled with admiration. The Buddhist priest picked it up, and laid it in the palm of his hand. "Your appearance," he said laughingly, "may well declare you to be a supernatural object, but as you lack any inherent quality it is necessary to inscribe a few characters on you, so that every one who shall see you may at once recognise you to be a remarkable thing. And subsequently, when you will be taken into a country where honour and affluence will reign, into a family cultured in mind and of official status, in a land where flowers and trees shall flourish with luxuriance, in a town of refinement, renown and glory; when you once will have been there…" The stone listened with intense delight..."

IT was always a puzzle to the little girl how the stork that brought her ever reached the lonely Dakota farm-house on a December afternoon without her being frozen; and it was another mystery, just as deep, how the strange bird, which her mother said was no larger than a blue crane, was able, on leaving, to carry her father away with him to some family, a long, long distance off, that needed a grown-up man as badly as her three big brothers needed a little sister.

The Biography of a Prairie Girl, by Eleanor Gates

About the Author “Eleanor Gates, the original of the prairie girl, left the Dakota far at the age of twelve and came with her family to California. For several years she lived on a ranch not far from Redding and many of the incidents recorded the book happened there. It was there that Miss Gates taught school. Her idle hours were spent in riding about the country and to the intimate knowledge of the trails and byways of the mountains, thus gained, she may be said to owe her launching on the uncertain sea of journalism. A reporter from a San Francisco newspaper was sent up Redding way for news of a desperado who made much good ‘copy’ in his day. Through the aid of the daring, little school mistress the bandit was traced to his hiding place and was, finally, captured. It was, no doubt, this coming in touch with the exciting side of journalism that turned Miss Gates’ thoughts toward the pencil as a means of livelihood, for, a short time after the capture, she startled her family by the announcement that she was going to San Francisco to try her fortune among the newspapers. “Miss Gates was not a ‘pronounced success’ as a journalist. It is recorded that a city editor once remarked while blue-penciling a story written by her: “That girl is either an idiot or a genius.’ If he is still in doubt, a perusal of the prairie girl’s story, that story that has set all the literary world talking, will convince him that she has in her possession, at least, a spark of the fire that never goes out. “Miss Gates’ one ambition was to take a university course and to that end she worked. She attended Stanford for a while and later entered the University of California. While there she wrote several plays, two of which were produced by the students. It was also there that she met her husband, Richard Tully, who is making a name for himself as a dramatist.” Leavenworth Macnar, “Sunset,” “A Magazine of the Border,” Vol. X, No. 1, November, 1902.

Lack of job opportunities, housing issues, money/economics, love life, family issues, etc. All of these play a role how our lives get determined. Where we come from to where we are going.Life in the late 1800's are no exception. Life was tough. Had to farm and hunt for your food, basic housing in undeveloped lands was difficult, and your only hope of love was either a large family that was a nearby neighbor or if someone you knew knew someone else who wanted a spouse. This story was interesting in telling the tale of a young lady (from birth to going off into the world) as she grew and matured. There were good times and bad, scraps and gatherings. A good window into history that we don't pay attention to anymore, that was life as people knew it. This time was a stepping block for us today.I would recommend this book to someone who would like a bit of normal, everyday living during this time period or to those with a bend towards historical information.

The book is easy entertainment written in laconic observations.Lots of dramatic adventures happen to the little girl and you are left wondering what happens to her next. Engaging read with practical suggestions for newbies and experienced bloggers alike By Tiffany Hathorn As a WAHM and blogger, one of my long-term goals is being able to earn a full-time income from my blog. So when I was afforded the opportunity to read this book, I was all over it. I am a firm believer in reading and learning as a daily exercise for personal and business development, so I sat down today to work my way through it. As I read, I felt an immediate connection to the author and her story. Though I did not start earning money from blogging until I had been at it for years (I honestly didn’t know that it was possible to make significant income from blogging until I started seriously networking with other bloggers in 2013), I could relate to her reason for starting her Frugal Fanatic blog. She wanted to share her voice and her insight with the world. She wanted to help people. Then she realized that she could not only help people through blogging, she could support her family at the same time. That, to me, is something that I could really resonate with.I love that throughout the book, she is essentially telling her blogging story while giving the reader practical guidelines for how she grew her blog and her income along the way. It reads as a story and a guidebook and I think that is what makes it not only beneficial, but enjoyable. Another thing that I really appreciate is that the author provides you with a list of things to implement at the end of every chapter. That way you are not just reading the book, you are learning and systematically taking action. So you can either read the book first and then go back and implement what you need to from each section or you can treat it as a course and implement everything from each chapter before moving on to the next. Whichever method you choose, if you take action, you’re sure to experience a progression towards your blogging and income goals. The author goes over so many important aspects of blogging – getting started, creating EFFECTIVE content, growing your audience, engaging your readers, time management, etc. If you have a question about the essentials of blogging for profit, it is very likely that she will touch on it in his book. Even as someone who has been blogging for 5 years, there were plenty of useful and practical suggestions that I found to be valuable. Whether you are a complete newbie to the blogosphere or you have been at it for a while, I can definitely recommend this book as worthy of buying, reading, and even re-reading when you need a refresher. After all, you definitely stand to earn a lot more income from your blog than you would spend to invest in this book.

I had already made the decision to design my blog and become more dedicated to making entries. When I heard about Adeline’s Breakthrough Book I thought I would read it to see if there was any information that I might find useful. I inhaled it from beginning to end. It answered all of my questions and by the time I was done I was excited to get started on something I had been putting off. From initially setting up your blog with the right tools, to tips on finding your voice and creating engaging content, and then ultimately using it as a way to increase your income, she has covered every step of the process that so many of us find daunting. The book is laid out well and is easy to follow. She obviously knows her stuff and has learned important information along the way that all of us can benefit from on our own journeys in the blogging world. Turning your love of writing into another way to make money is just a bonus.

P.J. O’Rourke has had a prolific career as one of America’s most celebrated humorists. But that career almost didn’t happen. As he tells it, “I began to write for pay in the spring of 1970. To tell the truth I didn’t even mean to be a writer, I meant to be a race car driver, but I didn’t have a race car.”Fortunately for us, he had to settle for writing. From his early pieces for the National Lampoon, through his classic reporting as Rolling Stone’s International Affairs editor in the 80s and 90s, and his brilliant, inimitable political journalism and analysis, P.J. has been entertaining and provoking readers with high octane prose, a gonzo Republican attitude and a rare ability to make you laugh out loud. Chris Buckley once described his work as “S.J. Perlman on acid” and when Penguin first published its Dictionary of Modern Humorous Quotations PJ had more entries than any living writer. For the first time Thrown Under the Omnibus brings together his funniest, most outrageous, most controversial and most loved pieces in the definitive P.J. reader. Handpicked and introduced by the humorist himself, Thrown Under the Omnibus is the essential P.J. O’Rourke anthology.

Thrown Under the Omnibus: A Reader, by P. J. O'Rourke

Review Praise for Thrown Under the Omnibus:“The world is short on laughs these days . . . Excellent timing, then, for the release of a thick collection of humorist P.J. O’Rourke’s work, culled from his 16 books by the author himself . . . Mr. O’Rourke has had a full and illustrious career, including stints at National Lampoon, Car and Driver and Rolling Stone. He occupies a rare place among the laughing class: He has somehow avoided the orifice obsession that captivates many of its members; he identifies as Republican; and he is no mere thumb-sucker, having visited more than 40 countries to report on wars, regime changes, economic revolutions and the experience of drinking cocktails garnished with the poison sacs of cobras.”—Wall Street Journal“Outspoken conservatives have long been a minority in comedy, particularly in the mainstream media, which provided an opportunity for P.J. O’Rourke, who for decades cornered the market for prominent right-wing humorists . . . If his wry essays have a mission statement . . . it’s this: Starchy Republicanism is really, really fun.”—New York Times Book Review“[P.J. O’Rourke] was really the first to inject-non-liberal hilarity into political discourse . . . But more important, he was able to yank conservatives out of the hands of the humorless and shrill, and make such writing accessible . . . He changed my life . . . If you don’t know him—you have your chance. Buy his new omnibus—an anthology of more good writing than you’d find in ten years of reading Proust.”—Greg Gutfeld“The only member of Woodstock Nation smart enough to brand himself as a conservative . . . O’Rourke’s career omnibus is best enjoyed from the depths of a button back chair with a glass of something golden at your side. Since the book is impossible to lift, the chair should be a stout one.”—Independent (UK)Praise for P.J. O'Rourke:"Whether you agree with him or not, P.J. writes a helluva piece."—Richard Nixon"P.J. O’Rourke is like S.J. Perelman on acid."—Chris Buckley"The funniest writer in America."—Wall Street Journal

About the Author P. J. O'Rourke has written sixteen books on subjects as diverse as politics and cars and etiquette and economics. His book about Washington, Parliament of Whores, and his book about international conflict and crisis, Give War a Chance, both reached #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. He is a contributing editor at the Weekly Standard, H. L. Mencken fellow at the Cato Institute, a regular panelist on NPR's Wait Wait . . . Don't Tell Me, and a columnist for the Daily Beast. He lives in rural New England, as far away from the things he writes about as he can get.

And while I may not always agree with his politics or opinions, I almost always find his work entertaining. This book represents some of his work over the last 30 years or so.=== The Good Stuff ===* O’Rourke is one of those writers whose work either you like or hate. Almost no one I have ever met is neutral on the subject. As always, his writing is sarcastic, humorous, tongue-in-cheek, serious, funny, sad, happy, offensive, sensitive and just about any other adjective you can think of.* Some of the works reprinted in this anthology are P.J. at his absolute best. His tale of tourism in war-torn Lebanon tells more about life in this part of the world than any serious story I have ever read on the subject. Likewise, I found myself laughing out loud at his descriptions of a “Peace Tour” of the Soviet Union- and at the same time gaining an understanding of what life was like.* While O’Rourke definitely skews toward the conservative or libertarian end of the political spectrum, his is not a zealot about preaching doctrine. He points out humor, silliness and ridiculousness wherever he sees it, including in his own experiences and past history.* The book is a nice sampling of O’Rourke’s work. My personal favorites of his stories are those relating his travels in various war-torn countries and underdeveloped hellholes. He has a remarkable talent for relating daily life, showing something of the good and bad in the residents and hanging out with the “fun” people.=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===* The book is long. It might be a bit much for someone not used to PJ’s writing style, especially if you try to read the whole thing at once.* Some of O’Rourke’s work is timeless, but some his not. His tales of drinking and driving from 30 years ago just fall flat in the face of modern social values. Also, some of his more historical writings may be lost on younger readers who have no memories of the Iron Curtain or the Soviet Union.=== Summary ===I had read many of the stories in this book previously, but I enjoyed rereading most of them. For the most part, I enjoy O’Rourke’s writing style and observations, and many of them are still relevant. While much of his commentary is somewhat political, it is not the diatribe of the talking heads, but rather a look at the strange happenings in the world through the eyes of a conservative commentator. If you haven’t been exposed to the author previously, you might want to sample one or two of his works before taking on this anthology.=== Disclaimer ===I was able to read an advance copy through the courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley.

While I admire him and enjoy his writing I do no mistake him for a partisan Conservative or someone who is working for the GOP and against the Democrats. He is willing to skewer everyone; everyone who deserves skewering. And that is, well, everyone. I have always found his writing informative, enjoyable to read, his humor always seems like it should be more predictable and repetitive than it is. He is wittier than you suppose and slips the knife in but you laugh before you understand exactly where it has been placed, maybe in you and yours. Some have referred to this as a greatest hits album. I guess it is. But I think of it as a way to peruse his best writing from his books over the decades and see how his views have changed and what has remained more or less constant. What he had hoped for (not much) and what disappointed him (nearly everything). If O’Rourke has one flaw that makes me put down his books and give them time to rest before I pick them up again is that I find it too pat to just piss on everyone and everything. In his work that matters to me the most, he does find some hope, some positive energy and a real effort to make the benighted wake up.While I do not claim to have read every word that the author has written (and here we only get excerpts from his books, not samples of his columns), I do have more than a few of them at home and my favorites are: “Parliament of Whores”, “Give War a Chance”, “All the Trouble in the World” , and my favorite of all is “Eat the Rich”. I also enjoyed “The CEO of the Sofa” and “On The Wealth of Nations”. Do I have to point out that it is perfectly fine if your views vary from mine? So, why would someone who has all or most of this author’s books want to get this one, too? Is it just a form of OCD? Is it a desire to make a wealthy writer even wealthier? Simple. If you don’t buy into my earlier statement of strolling through his best writing in one shorter hike than rereading whole books, think about it another way. If, like me, you are old enough to have purchased his books when they were new and enjoyed them when they were in the news, you now likely have children (and possibly grandchildren) who are adults and have likely NOT read O’Rourke’s works. Why didn’t they read them, because he was YOUR author and therefore utterly uncool in their youthful world. But now they are older and reconsidering their values (revaluing their values as their once beloved Nietzsche once put it). They are not going to push through the whole book or understand the references to current events. Here we have the writing the author and the editor think that best stand on its own. You can give them the gift of O’Rourke in one handy field manual! One thing we do not get in this book, beyond the brief introduction, is the author’s views of each of the works, reminiscences about writing the book, the struggles with the editor, a recounting of the way the critics and public reacted to it at its release, or the settling of old scores. We just get the writing. And that is fine. We enjoy the author for his writing, after all. Maybe he will give us a different book wandering through the corridors of how he went through his own life. But I kind of doubt it. Confession really doesn’t seem to be his thing beyond the persona he has created as a device for his writing. I have no idea how much of what the author says about himself is real and how much is a writing device. And even if he told us what was what, would he be leveling with us? Who knows.Let’s just enjoy his writing and insights.Reviewed by Craig Matteson, Saline, MI

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. a greatest hits compilation By D. H. I have to admit that based on the blurb I was expecting articles from The National Lampoon, Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, various car magazines, etc. Instead the material in this book is all taken from his previous books by this same publisher. As someone noted; a greatest hits compilation. It's like ordering a greatest hits album from an artist and realizing the songs are from one of the artist's labels, but not from all of the labels on which the artist recorded. Would love to have an anthology of his writings from all of those other miscellaneous sources.

Learn To Write With Power By Ethan Powers If you are a writer, this book will show you the techniques to make your writing powerful, compelling and persuasive.Proven process such as the PEEL method and triangle of relevance are mentioned which is great.I am glad to see that there is a chapter on the psychology of readers, which I believe is very critical. Here you will learn about words vs voice and words vs how they sound. The last two chapters dwell on the technicals of writing magnetic contents and compelling headlines, such as when to use subheads, bullet lists and line breaks.Overall, a must-read book to polish up your writing skills. Recommended.

HAVING taken more than ordinary Pains in collecting the Materials which compose the following History, we could not be satisfied with our selves, if any Thing were wanting to it, which might render it entirely satisfactory to the Publick: It is for this Reason we have subjoined to the Work, a short Abstract of the Laws now in Force against Pyrates, and made Choice of some particular Cases, (the most curious we could meet with) which have been heretofore tried, by which it will appear what Actions have, and what have not been adjudged Pyracy. It is possible this Book may fall into the Hands of some Masters of Ships, and other honest Mariners, who frequently, by contrary Winds or Tempests, or other Accidents incident to long Voyages, find themselves reduced to great Distresses, either through Scarcity of Provisions, or Want of Stores. I say, it may be a Direction to such as those, what Lengths they may venture to go, without violating the Law of Nations, in Case they should meet other Ships at Sea, or be cast on some inhospitable Shore, which should refuse to trade with them for such Things as are absolutely necessary for the Preservation of their Lives, or the Safety of the Ship and Cargoe.

A prolific 19th Century author of short stories, plays, novellas, novels, fiction and non-fiction; during his lifetime Dickens became known the world over for his remarkable characters, his mastery of prose in the telling of their lives, and his depictions of the social classes, morals and values of his times. For me, it is up there with Great Expectations and David Copperfield as one of his most enjoyable novels (A Christmas Carol is a short story). The social axe that Dickens had to grind in this story is man's injustice to children. Modern readers my feel that his depiction of Dotheboys Academy is too melodramatic. Alas, unfortunately, it was all too real. Charles Dickens helped create a world where we can't believe that such things happen. Dickens even tell us in an introduction that several Yorkshire schoolmasters were sure that Wackford Squeers was based on them and threatened legal action. The plot of Nicholas Nickleby is a miracle of invention. It is nothing more than a series of adventures, in which Nicholas tries to make his way in the world, separate himself from his evil uncle, and try to provide for his mother and sister. There are no unintersting characters in Dickens. Each one is almost a charicature. This book contains some of his funniest characters. To say this is a melodrama is not an insult. This is melodrama at its best. Its a long book, but a fast read.

Dickens is as much a social critic as a storyteller in "Nicholas Nickleby," which basically pits the noble young man who gives the novel its title against his wickedly scheming rich uncle Ralph in a grand canvas of London and English society. At the beginning of the novel, Nicholas's father has just died, leaving his family destitute, and Uncle Ralph, a moneylender (specifically, a usurer) and a venture capitalist of sorts, greedy and callous by the requirements of the story, reluctantly feels obligated to help them, and does so by securing for Nicholas a position as headmaster's assistant at a school for boys in Yorkshire, and for Nicholas's sister Kate a job as a dressmaker for a foppish clown named Mr. Mantalini, while Nicholas and Kate's scatterbrained mother is left in her room to mutter incoherent reminiscences about random events in her life. This Yorkshire school, called Dotheboys Hall, turns out to be little more than a prison in the way it is run by its headmaster, an improbably cruel cyclops named Wackford Squeers who badly mistreats and miseducates the students. Now, historical records indicate that while Squeers may be an exaggeration, his school is definitely not, Dickens intending to warn his readers of the day that some such places were indeed that bad. The duration at Dotheboys Hall constitutes only a small portion of the novel, but Squeers and his grotesque family reappear throughout the rest of the story like gremlins who are always causing bad things to happen to our hero.Nicholas's fortunes after escaping from Dotheboys Hall with Smike, a particularly abused older boy whom Squeers had worked like a slave, revolve largely around the circumstances of Kate and Uncle Ralph, who is starting to view the young man as a nuisance inclined to interfere in his machinations. Having been vilified by Squeers for his brash conduct at the Hall, Nicholas takes to the road with Smike in tow, where in Portsmouth they meet a thespian named Vincent Crummles who persuades the fugitives to become actors in his theatrical troupe; this episode, the strangest of Nicholas's adventures, seems more than anything else to reflect Dickens's own interest in the theater. Eventually Nicholas returns to London and gets a job as a clerk at a counting-house owned by a pair of merchants, the cheery Cheeryble brothers, where he encounters a beautiful girl in distress who will become a major factor in the final showdown between Nicholas and his uncle. The supporting characters are numerous and extremely colorful to the point of cartoonishness, such as Miss La Creevy, a talkative spinster and amateur painter; John Browdie, the gruff Yorkshireman whose dialect is so severe he needs a translator; Sir Mulberry Hawk, the arrogant suitor whom Kates tries to rebuff; Newman Noggs, Uncle Ralph's benevolent clerk who helps our hero when he can. In fact, the most curious thing about the characterization in this novel is that its main characters are almost completely devoid of personality; Nicholas and Kate, perhaps being by necessity innocuous paragons of virtue, are practically mere mannequins to whom people talk and things happen. Even the sickly and wretchedly humble Smike, the mystery of whose parentage becomes a part of the plot, does not induce as much pity as Dickens probably intended because he seems trapped in a story that doesn't really want him except as a device to expose even more of Uncle Ralph's villainy. There is much to like in "Nicholas Nickleby": The prose is finely detailed, the satire of various types of characters is on target, the humor is sharp -- there is a particularly funny and suspenseful scene with an unexpected outcome in which Nicholas dispatches Newman to discover the identity of the mysterious beautiful girl. And there is much not to like: The plot coincidences are ridiculously contrived in typical Dickensian fashion; the drama is manipulative, designed to cheer the reader all the more when the author comes to rescue the heroes from their despair and hopelessness; the sentimentality is overwhelming -- by the end "Nicholas Nickleby" becomes so saccharine it makes "David Copperfield" look like "Blood Meridian." But Dickens remains eminently readable because of his flair for portraying and celebrating human oddity in all its varieties, his knowledge that life is all about taking the bad with the good, and his sense that fiction is all about maximizing the contrast.

I detested it, swore I would never read Dickens again, only to find that my junior year held in store for me what would become one of my favorite novels, Great Expectations, a book heinously bastardized years later by a 'modernized' film adaptation, with Anne Bancroft being the only redeeming feature.Through the years since high school, I have begun to read Dickens of my own free will, and have greatly enjoyed his works.Nicholas Nickelby, one of my all time favorites, is a wonderful novel, typical Dickens, chock full of characters, plots, satire, and story. Nicholas and his immediate family are the 'black sheep' of the Nickelby name. Humble, gentle, and common in the eyes of their well-to-do relative, Uncle Ralph Nickelby, who denounces Nicholas as a boy, and man, who will never amount to anything. In typical Dickens fashion, Nicholas encounters adversity first at a boarding school, then in society, as he forges a name for himself. Along the way he befriends many, enrages some, and invokes the wrath of his Uncle Ralph, determined to prove himself right in bemoaning the shortcomings of his nephew. One point of interest in this novel for me is the major revelation that comes toward the end involving the character of Smike. Throughout the novel he is loveable, pitiable, and utterly realistic, and his significance to the life of Nicholas, as revealed in the final chapters, is a true plot twist, and a charming, if not bittersweet, realization. For anyone forced to read Dickens early in life, if you appreciate quality satire and an engaging look at the London society of more than 125 years ago, visit this novel sometime, it is one of Dicken's finest.

This book is so good it should be a movie - just look for a different copy because the text is sooooo small (~8pt font) By Karen Martin This book was pretty amazing to me. I am not a huge reader, but given my interest in the time period and for Georgian Cavendish, I was very interested in her fictional work. Though it was written in 1778, the book was very easy to understand and written so eloquently. What's also interesting is how much stories by Austen and Bronte would make you think men are chivalrous and the times were romantic. This predates Austen, but not by much, and reveals that even back then a large sum of men, and women too, were just as deceitful when it comes to love. Even then, men were openly about the game - players, if you will. The Premise:Julia Greenville meets a gentleman due to an accident. Immediately, he makes an effort to make her his, and the only way to do so is by marriage. So she's married and quickly taken to London from her rural home. There she discovers her husband for who he really is. And as openly unfaithful as he is, and despite bringing them to ruin, Julia is determined to be a faithful wife. Though her early female companions, her husband chose for her, are also full of vice and encourage Julia to take up the same life, she triumphs in her effort to stay virtuous. How? Why the intervention of this mysterious "slyph" who writes letters of encouragement and advice to her. The end of the story reveals the truth of who the sylph is. And while you read, you will have 2 guesses - I can tell you, you'll still be pleasantly surprised at the twist at the end.The book doesn't just tell a story, it reveals so much information about aristocratic culture during that time, and the struggles of a woman who lives among libertines. I can easily picture a BBC adaptation of this book into a miniseries. It would be excellent!
