Just ten years ago I took my first hesitating and dubious steps toward authorship. My reception on the part of the public has been so much kinder than I expected, and the audience that has listened to my stories with each successive autumn has been so steadfast and loyal, that I can scarcely be blamed for entertaining a warm and growing regard for these unseen, unknown friends. Toward indifferent strangers we maintain a natural reticence, but as acquaintance ripens into friendship there is a mutual impulse toward an exchange of confidences. In the many kind letters received I have gratefully recognized this impulse in my readers, and am tempted by their interest to be a little garrulous concerning my literary life, the causes which led to it, and the methods of my work. Those who are indifferent can easily skip these preliminary pages, and those who are learning to care a little for the personality of him who has come to them so often with the kindling of the autumn fires may find some satisfaction in learning why he comes, and the motive, the spirit with which, in a sense, he ventures to be present at their hearths.

I'm a reader, not a reviewer, but I had to write SOMETHING because this was one of the best older books I've read.Without a Home is the story of the trials and tragedies that follow a 19th century New York City family affected by the father's opium addiction. The frankness with which substance abuse is presented was surprising to me, given the era in which the book was written. Surprising also was the WAY it was presented. I didn't know that addiction was seen as a disease back then, and not just a moral weakness, as I had thought it was believed to be.The author was a Presbyterian minister so the book has a decidedly Christian flavor, surprisingly not so much in a preachy way, but because the faith of the heroine is an integral part of the story. This has been a really good read in so many ways, and (to me, at least) a shining example of America's rich literary heritage. I'll be mentally chewing on this story for a long time!

Great story with interesting historical info By Maggie Jarpey The historical info on the "shop girls" in 19th-century New York City was fascinating, and sad. So that was a plus to an excellent story with believable, interesting characters and a compelling plot. As always with the books I've read thus far by this author, the Christian message is less talked about than in most modern Christian fiction and yet is absolutely integral to the story and real enough to make me stop and think and talk to the Lord. The emotion of the Christian message in this story was strong and enjoyable to me. Some modern Christian novels I've read seem to have the Christianity just tacked on to a story that would have been the same without the Christianity. Roe's novels, and Susan Warner's, and George MacDonald's are all about Jesus Christ even when He is mentioned rather sparingly.

The speed of the train slackened; a broad tidal river flashed into sight below the trestle, spreading away on either hand through yellowing level meadows. And now, above the roaring undertone of the cars, from far ahead floated back the treble bell-notes of the locomotive; there came a gritting vibration of brakes; slowly, more slowly the cars glided to a creaking standstill beside a sun-scorched platform gay with the bright flutter of sunshades and summer gowns.

The Fighting Chance, by Robert W. Chambers

About the Author Robert William Chambers was an American author who is best known for his Art Nouveau short-story collection, The King in Yellow, considered to be one of the most important examples of American supernatural fiction. Chambers was a prolific writer, and although he continued to write within the weird genre, publishing The Maker of Moon, The Mystery of Choice, and The Tree of Heaven, none of his subsequent efforts achieved the success of The King in Yellow. Chambers early works greatly influenced the work of H.P. Lovecraft and other horror writers, as well as the 2014 HBO television show True Detective. Robert Chambers died in 1933 at the age of 68.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. More star-crossed lovers from Robert Chambers By Jared The Fighting Chance (1906) is another society romance by Robert Chambers, intentionally written in the same vein as the other "popular phrase" series, such as The Danger Mark and The Firing Line. (These were all popular phrases, honest!)The central plot, as with these other two, is a somewhat-star-crossed romance. Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy is thrown out of exclusive New York clubs and takes to drink, boy finds girl again. In the course of meeting/losing/finding, the boy and girl in question both reveal their shameful inner weaknesses and, eventually, come to the conclusion that they should marry regardless. There's not a lot of mystery in what will happen, merely in how it comes about. In The Fighting Chance, the romantic core of the book is provided by Stephen Siward and Sylvia Landis. The two meet in the first pages of the book, fall in love in the first few chapters, and spend the rest of the 400-odd pages trying desperately to keep one another at arm's length (and ultimately failing to do so).Siward begins the book in a state of social distress. It seems that - not long ago - he committed the Ultimate Sin - he brought a woman into his posh gentlemen's club. Not any woman, an actress. The circumstances are all a little dodgy, but when it came down to it, poor Siward was stumbling drunk, and couldn't defend himself. He has - with good cause - been evicted from the club and been shunned from polite society. As the book continues, we learn that this isn't his first alcohol-related incident - although his drunkenness has been previously ignored as it wasn't paired with any sort of disastrous incident. Nor is Stephen the first Siward to have this "curse" upon him - he comes from a long line of booze-plagued types. It is almost fortunate that he's the last of his line. Sure, it'll be a shame that this heralded New York family comes to an end, but at least he won't be passing his curse down to another generation.Mr. Chambers' assumptions about the genetics of alcholism have been proven over the past hundred years (although generally most doctors don't suggest "ostracism" as the recommended treatment). But Siward isn't the only one with a hereditary problem - Sylvia Landis has inherited infidelity. Not just Sylvia's mother, but her grandmother too - both... cavorted. With men! Sometimes in Europe! Fortunately, Sylvia is also protected by the thick, rubbery shield of moneyed society (it also helps that she's hot). Sylvia's self-medication for her disease is an interesting one: she's gotten herself engaged. She's convinced that the best way to battle her latent instinct is to get herself off the market as swiftly as possible.Syvlia's chosen partner is Quarrier. He's ostensibly handsome (although Sylvia can't stand his horrible "silky" beard), undeniably rich and truly awful. He's a bloodless, joyless beast who does everything by the numbers, plays nasty bridge and is generally a cold-blooded, serpentine fellow. He's theoretically devoted to Sylvia, but it is clear that she's merely a trophy to him. He's also devoted to Siward - but in a much different way. Siward's actress "friend" is really Quarrier's actress friend. Quarrier knows that Siward is innocent, but refuses to help him, as it might cast a stain on his own reputation. More than that, Quarrier is set on destroying Siward - an impulse that's doubled and re-doubled every time he catches Siward making eyes at his fiancée.One of the key distinctions betwen The Fighting Chance and The Firing Line is the difference between Quarrier and Malcourt. If the latter was a tragic figure (and the source of the book's finer quotes), the former is utterly irredeemable. There's even a long debate between Siward and his friend Plank towards the end of the book, as the two try and discern if Quarrier has a single worthwhile characteristic (they determine that he has two: he's charitable to his family and especially kind to his detestable father). But even that is overshadowed by Quarrier's hideous sort of sensuality. Unlike Malcourt, who killed himself rather than (ahem) "press his advantage" over a wife that he knew didn't love him, Quarrier is quite keen to get into bed with Sylvia (much to her horror) and tells her as much. As well as his dodgy bit of actress on the side, Quarrier is also slinking around after another society dame as well - an equally bloodless woman named Agatha. The Fighting Chance was so popular at booksellers that it required an additional printing prior to publication. According to one article, it sold over 200,000 copies - at the time, Mr. Chambers was a regular bestseller in both the US and UK, topped only by Mr. Churchill. The book was even banned for being "a little too warm" in one Massachusetts district and, according to one critic, was better than Edith Wharton - for, although it discussed many similar themes, The Fighting Chance "adds charity to Mrs. Wharton's ingredients". Time has been cruel and, now, this is a book with a paltry 45 downloads on Project Gutenberg.Sadly, I'm forced to concur with the modern view of book's legacy. Mr. Chambers has written a good - not excellent - character study, and aside from also being a generic example of his craft, I don't have much else with which to recommend it. This book took the chance I gave it, but, sadly, that doesn't mean it won out in the end.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not an A-list book, perhaps a C? By K. Kennedy Like J. Shurin, I gave this book a chance, and found it wanting. The characters varied in keeping my interest, and several seemed to fade away into oblivion without ever having been fully fleshed out. The plot was interesting, but not compelling. Overall, a good read if you are in between other books and are looking for some mild entertainment, with some rare witty dialogue.

How is this book unique?

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography Common Sense is a book written by Thomas Paine in 1775–76 that inspired people in the Thirteen Colonies to declare and fight for independence from Great Britain in the summer of 1776. The book explained the advantages of and the need for immediate independence in clear, simple language. It was published anonymously on January 10, 1776, at the beginning of the American Revolution and became an immediate sensation. It was sold and distributed widely and read aloud at taverns and meeting places. Washington had it read to all his troops, which at the time had surrounded the British army in Boston. In proportion to the population of the colonies at that time (2.5 million), it had the largest sale and circulation of any book published in American history. As of 2006, it remains the all-time best selling American title. Common Sense presented the American colonists with an argument for freedom from British rule at a time when the question of whether or not to seek independence was the central issue of the day. Paine wrote and reasoned in a style that common people understood. Forgoing the philosophical and Latin references used by Enlightenment era writers, he structured Common Sense as if it were a sermon, and relied on Biblical references to make his case to the people. He connected independence with common dissenting Protestant beliefs as a means to present a distinctly American political identity. Historian Gordon S. Wood described Common Sense as "the most incendiary and popular book of the entire revolutionary era". The Tempest is a play by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in 1610–11, and thought by many critics to be the last play that Shakespeare wrote alone. It is set on a remote island, where Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, plots to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place using illusion and skilful manipulation. He conjures up a storm, the eponymous tempest, to lure his usurping brother Antonio and the complicit King Alonso of Naples to the island. There, his machinations bring about the revelation of Antonio's lowly nature, the redemption of the King, and the marriage of Miranda to Alonso's son, Ferdinand. There is no obvious single source for the plot of The Tempest, but researchers have seen parallels in Erasmus's Naufragium, Peter Martyr's De orbe novo, and eyewitness reports by William Strachey and Sylvester Jordain of the real-life shipwreck of the Sea Venture on the islands of Bermuda, and the subsequent conflict between Sir Thomas Gates and Sir George Somers. In addition, one of Gonzalo's speeches is derived from Montaigne's essay Of the Canibales, and much of Prospero's renunciative speech is taken word for word from a speech by Medea in Ovid's poem Metamorphoses. The masque in Act 4 may have been a later addition, possibly in honour of the wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Frederick V in 1613. The play was first published in the First Folio of 1623.

Common Sense And The Tempest: Color Illustrated, Formatted for E-Readers (Unabridged Version), by Thomas Paine, William Shakespeare

Amazon.com Review "These are the times that try men's souls," begins Thomas Paine's first Crisis paper, the impassioned pamphlet that helped ignite the American Revolution. Published in Philadelphia in January of 1776, Common Sense sold 150,000 copies almost immediately. A powerful piece of propaganda, it attacked the idea of a hereditary monarchy, dismissed the chance for reconciliation with England, and outlined the economic benefits of independence while espousing equality of rights among citizens. Paine fanned a flame that was already burning, but many historians argue that his work unified dissenting voices and persuaded patriots that the American Revolution was not only necessary, but an epochal step in world history.

Review “No writer has exceeded Paine in ease and familiarity of style; in perspicuity of expression, happiness of elucidation, and in simple unassuming language.” —Thomas Jefferson

Review "Edward Larkin's new edition of Common Sense will be welcomed by readers. With a lively and detailed introduction, thorough scholarly notes, and a representative selection of the contemporaneous responses it provoked, this should become the definitive new edition of Paine's classic tract." (Richard Boyd )"The big problem with Paine is that current readers have trouble seeing why his ideas did not seem so common-sensical to eighteenth-century people. Larkin addresses this problem with supplementary texts that focus on the debate over independence in America; along with his interesting and approachable introduction, the combination makes for the best edition of Paine's Common Sense available." (Daniel Vickers )"There are many fine editions of this indispensable American text. But this one is richer and more rewarding than the others. It invites readers to encounter Common Sense in the fullness of its historical setting. And as it does, it makes plain how utterly Tom Paine towered above all other Revolutionary writers." (Michael W. Zuckerman )"Edward Larkin's new edition of Tom Paine's Common Sense will be a boon to teachers and students. It thoughtfully contextualizes Paine's pamphlet while highlighting the singularity of his voice. Most importantly, it will aid students in placing Common Sense in that absolutely central eighteenth-century culture war: the beginning of the unfinished argument over modern democracy." (Michael Meranze )

Paine was the finest pamphleteer of his age and was able to turn the discontents of the colonists and, especially, the intellectual leaders of the revolutionary movement into arguments that were easily understood by ordinary colonials and which inspired them to rally to the cause of independence.I first read Common Sense more than fifty years ago and remember well being impressed with Paine's ability to carry arguments and to anticipate those of his opponents before his tract even hit the street. Over the course of my lifetime, I was inspired by the author and became a pamphleteer of sorts myself. I always told my colleagues that I wanted to become a poor man's Tom Paine. But after reading the piece once again, I realize that almost all who aspire to follow in his footsteps, if not fill his shoes, are doomed to become but very poor copies of the original.Other reviewers have noted the fluidity of his writing; it reads as simply, directly and forcefully today as it must have nearly a quarter of a millennium ago. Obviously, one did not have to be a great reader to be swayed by the force of Paine's words or to be inspired to the side of those wishing to throw off the English yoke.I was struck by echoes of Paine in many great American speeches that were running through my mind as I read. A number of quotes from Robert F. Kennedy seemed to have been directly inspired by Common Sense, and I hastily looked them up and offer these two for your consideration:"It is not enough to understand, or to see clearly. The future will be shaped in the arena of human activity, by those willing to commit their minds and their bodies to the task.""All of us might wish at times that we lived in a more tranquil world, but we don't. And if our times are difficult and perplexing, so are they challenging and filled with opportunity."The Declaration of Independence itself is a direct offspring of this great tract. Jefferson and the others charged with developing the document were well aware of Paine and had the opportunity to evaluate his words and to use his methods in creating our declaration, and this takes nothing away from their genius. This is a document that can be read in short order, and it is free at the Kindle Store. How can you say no to giving it a try?

DelParto In an unrelenting quest to understanding the history of the United States, one obscure name comes to mind, Thomas Paine. Paine helped establish the meaning of democracy and the "united" in United States. His two monumental works, COMMON SENSE AND RIGHTS OF MAN, provided the philosophical and rhetorical building blocks that the founding fathers, such as Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, et al., would emulate with the writing of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. Many take for granted the origins of freedom and democracy in the United States, and as with many school history textbooks depict, Paine merely appears in a paragraph or two, and quickly disappears to historical oblivion.Nevertheless, when one reads COMMON SENSE AND RIGHTS OF MAN: AND OTHER ESSENTIAL WRITINGS OF THOMAS PAINE, there will be no doubt how significant his philosophical and political writings transformed the political structure of the colonies. Although this may sound somewhat romanticized, Paine's words ignited the energy for the colonists to free themselves from the tyrannical-monarchical leadership of England's King George III. With all the talk of Paine being a founding father, he may also be considered the father of revolution, American Revolution and French Revolution, and human rights. Without the inspiration from his friend Edmund Burke, author of REFLECTIONS ON THE REVOLUTION IN FRANCE, Paine may not have been able to write the pamphlet Rights of Man. Indeed, his power of the written word translated to revolutionary action, and Jeffersonian ideology. In clear and no nonsense language, Paine's perspective of the state of the colonies are elaborately told in COMMON SENSE. He adamantly shows his opposition toward hereditary rule and limitations imposed on individuals by George III and his vehement disdain towards aristocrats and kings. For RIGHTS OF MAN, he proposed possible solutions toward poverty, and created a blueprint towards achieving social and political institutions through his written abstracts. The other essential writings include the pamphlets, THE CRISIS, part one of THE AGE OF REASON, and selections of AGRARIAN JUSTICE. These writings gives readers an idea the political and religious atmosphere in which Paine lived, and how "breaking ties" with the so-called "motherland" was necessary towards forging a free nation.COMMON SENSE AND RIGHTS OF MAN is indeed accessible with its pocketbook size form. After reading the book, readers may have a better understanding of what it takes to build a nation. Paine's words are lessons of history and humanity, and is definitely recommendable reading.

104 of 110 people found the following review helpful. more than history By A Customer I read the other reviews and while I agree with them, I must add that this book is more than history. I remember reading Paine's critique of the English government being "so exceedingly complex" that when a problem developed, politicians would fight for years deciding whose fault it was. Finally, when they would try to solve the problem, everyone had a different solution. I thought I was reading an editorial from USNews. I was amazed that many problems that incited the colonies to revolt are now present in our new government. Read this as more than great history. Read it as political science, and public commentary.

ON a summer's morning, between thirty and forty years ago, two girls were crying bitterly in the cabin of an East Indian passenger ship, bound outward, from Gravesend to Bombay. They were both of the same age—eighteen. They had both, from childhood upward, been close and dear friends at the same school. They were now parting for the first time—and parting, it might be, for life. The name of one was Blanche. The name of the other was Anne.

By lazza In general, I have not been impressed with the works of Wilkie Collins outside his "big 4" novels ('The Woman in White', 'No Name', 'Armadale', and 'The Moonstone'). 'Man and Wife' was written right after 'The Moonstone', the last of his really successful novels. Sadly, this novel is unjustly overlooked by Wilkie Collins fans. It's actually a fun read.'Man and Wife' is a complicated story about a young couple, and their friends/family, caught up in the consequences of lax marriage laws during the Victorian era. At that time folks in Scotland were considered married if they simply announced it. No need for marriage licenses, blood tests, etc. Wilkie Collins's gift of building the suspense works well, and the book's ending is unexpected (and terrific).'Man and Wife' is every bit as good as, say, 'The Moonstone'. However for Wilkie Collins neophytes I suggest first trying 'The Woman in White' or 'No Name' (..both are my favorites).PS - I think the previous reviewer is mistaken. This book has nothing to do with intrusive mother-in-laws.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. One of Collins' Best By disco75 *Man & Wife* is a wonderful mystery novel, except that instead of the whodunit format, the time frame is reversed and the crime is unfolding as we read. With exciting prose and plotting, Collins produces in the second quarter of the book a pursuit sequence almost as riveting as *Dracula's* 1897 mountain chase. The misdeed is largely psychological and societal: a woman promised but not given marriage becomes pregnant, and she has to be very resourceful in identifying a way to keep her baby legitimate as she hides her condition under the bustles of Victorian dress codes. So far, shades of Hardy's *Two On A Tower,* except this is not a romance. Rather, it is an excoriation of Victorian male-female privilege disparities using bizarre, and actual, Scottish marriage laws of the time.It was written after Collins' blockbuster 1860s novels. As a result, it has the more finely nuanced understanding of human nature that he honed until his very finest novel (*The Evil Genius* comedy). However, it was composed in 1870, and the proximity to his very purple sensation novels like *Armadale* and *Woman In White* leave *Man & Wife* turning in the last quarter to a jep novel that is a sensation style but not as campily over-the-top as the 60s volumes. Fortunately, there is finely-observed satire and comedy to lighten the mood most of the way. It is stronger than that other hidden gem of Collins, *Hide & Seek* and more believable than *The Moonstone.* So cinematic, I'm surprised it hasn't been made into a Gosford Park-style treat.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A harsh view of Victorian marriages By Elizabeth Man and Wife is a novel of two generations of marriages that end in disaster. However, the novel is much more than the story of a helpless Victorian bride at the mercy of her despotic husband. Instead, Man and Wife explores the complex laws surrounding Irish and Scottish marriages in the nineteenth century. Wilkie Collins's interest in the law, especially marriage and divorce, lead to a novel with endless legal loopholes concerning what constitututes a marriage and what doesn't.The lives of two generation of friends named Anne and Blanche are forever changed by the laws concerning man and wife. The first generation Anne and Blanche are childhood friends. Anne Vanborough's Irish marriage is declared null and void by English law. She dies broken hearted and entreats her dearest friend, Anne, to look after he daughter also named Anne. As Anne lay dying she thinks of her daughter and wonders "will she end like me?".After Anne's death, Blanche raises little Anne as her own. Little Anne and Blanche's daughter also named Blanche become best friends. However, history is determined to repeat itself in a much more tragic manner.Another marriage comes under scrutiny. Another woman is forced to become an outcast by the legal system. Anne and Blanche are destined to relive the events that cursed their mothers. I absolutely recommend this novel to all WC fans. Many parts of the novel will move you to tears, others will leave you livid. In my opinion, Man and Wife features the most despicable character I've ever encountered in a Collins novel. An excellent read!

From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 3—The text in this picture-book version of the story flows smoothly while incorporating many incidents from the original. Dusíková's watercolor illustrations feature rosy-cheeked children, cuddly goats, and flowering hillside pastures. The images enhance the narrative and reveal enough in themselves for browsers to understand the basic plot. Although not an essential purchase, the book provides an attractive option for those wishing to introduce the classic tale to a young audience.—Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University, Mankato Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. 25 of 26 people found the following review helpful. This gorgeous book is the perfect way to introduce a classic tale to the young child! By Deb A young woman with a blond plait down her back began to climb up a mountainous path. She was hand in hand with a little girl "whose cheeks glowed as if they were on fire." Heidi and her Aunt Dete were heading up the mountain because her aunt would no longer be able to care for her and Grandfather would have to take over her responsibilities. The village people were horrified because, in their eyes, there was something wrong with him. The grandfather didn't quite know what to do with the precocious little girl who quickly made her bed in the hayloft. It was going to be a much different life for the old hermit.Soon Heidi was at home on the mountain. She made friends with Peter, the goatherd, and Grandfather's two goats, Schwänli and Bärli. It was as if she had always lived there. Even Peter's blind grandmother noticed a difference in the grumpy old Grandfather and said to herself that "he has changed since Heidi came." She had brought light and joy into all their lives. The seasons past quickly and soon Heidi was seven. Her Aunt Dete suddenly arrived back on the mountain because "she had met a rich gentleman in Frankfort who was looking for a companion" for his disabled daughter, Klara. Heidi and the Grandfather had grown so close. "I won't go," but relented when her aunt lied to her. How could they ever live without one another? This book is the perfect way to introduce a classic tale to the young child who, in time, will probably want to read the original story. This condensed version of the book is very well done, but didn't have the tension that the Shirley Temple movie carried. Aunt Dete was not portrayed as an ogre and the story itself was very graceful and soothing. The watercolors were sweeping and gorgeous and the mountainous atmosphere was almost palpable. This beautiful oversized book is just looking for a new home and a few children listen to Heidi's classic story!

By Ana Braga-Henebry We listened to Heidi last semester, the unabridged version, and then watched at least a couple of different versions of the story on film. So, we know the story well, and we know this picture book offers a very abridged version of the book. And yet, what won our hearts over this book are the illustrations! No book or film version seem to portray Heidi as in the darling illustrations by Maja Dusikova.Done in watercolor, the illustrations take you to the Alpine mountains and truly reflect the beauty and delight of that region as described in the well-loved book by Johana Spryi! The characters, the mountain huts, life in the city, it is all done so faithfully to the book. I can't help but feel that the talented illustrator must both love this book and know that region very well.A wonderful way to introduce the classic story to young children!

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. This latest adaptation will appeal to a new generation By Midwest Book Review Illustrated by Maza Dusikova, "Heidi" is a 32-page hardcover adaptation by Johanna Spyri of the original beloved book first published in 1880. Designed for children ages 3 and up, "Heidi" is beautifully interpreted both in its text and its softly luminous artwork. The well-known story makes fresh new fans with its charming retelling of the wonderful story of the little Swiss girl and her Grandfather. "Heidi" is a classic, needless to say, but this latest adaptation will give it fresh life and appeal to a new generation.

By J Cook Before You Swing, A Golfer's Guide to Fitness Training, for me, is quite timely and relevant. I’m 60+ years old and four years ago had back surgery to correct an issue that was exacerbated by too much time hitting balls on the range, after a fairly long layoff from the game. Out of concern for my back health I’ve played very infrequently since the surgery. Another issue has been a marked decrease in flexibility. My shoulder/hip turns have just about disappeared.Derek Newman has been my personal trainer for the past three years and his knowledge of physiology is impressive; he has made it possible for me to attain my exercise/physical goals. Greg Justice has a golden reputation as one of the first serious personal trainers in the Kansas City area. This book Derek and Greg authored reflects not only their deep knowledge of the body and its interrelated moving parts, but, and to my surprise, a sound knowledge of the golf swing and the game itself. Much of what I’ve read in the book echoes what my golf pro/instructor has pointed out to me as I’ve begun to attempt to rebuild a dormant golf swing.I think this book is a good read for golfers of any age. Applying its tenets may just change the age-old correlation between golf and a bad back.

I have no idea why it is in my kindle because I don't play golf. Never have. OK, I tried it once ... not my thing. So I'm leafing through this book and I just cannot believe the amount of information which Greg and Derek managed to pack in between the covers of this book. There is nothing this book doesn't cover from wind, to stance and posture, to attitude, to clubs, to aim, slopes, altitude, trees, swing, warm-up, stretches, rhythm, breathing, core exercises, hamstring, groin, chest, trunk, neck, shoulders, flexibility, limits, relaxation, the body's fascia system for crying out loud and on and on it goes. I'm not even covering a smidgen of the information to be found in this book.I am truly impressed! I will certainly use some of the exercises in the book because they are well thought out and look to me as if I will get maximum result from minimum input. It really should be five stars but because I don't play golf and have no intention to ... it'll have to be four. I will have to buy a copy for my neighbour who loves golf!

Published a modern, helpful, clearly written book that is about even more than motivation. It is a do-able plan for success. This foray into golf will resonate with professional and amateur golfers, including the-wannabe-golfer-in-all-of-us. This is highly recommended and a great addition to Greg's body of work! Good reading indeed.

MGM British Studios: Hollywood in Borehamwood tells the story behind England’s biggest film studio. Based in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, England, between 1948-1970, it played host to some of the biggest names in Hollywood’s history, and over 150 classic movies from the golden age of cinema were produced on its sound stages. From Under Capricorn (1949) directed by Alfred Hitchcock; to Mogambo (1953) Starring Clark Gable, Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly; from Where Eagles Dare (1968) starring Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood; to 2001 (1968) directed by Stanley Kubrick; this book tells the story of their making, from behind the scenes. Featuring many never before seen photographs, and hundreds of memories from those who worked at MGM British, both in-front of, and behind the camera, this is a nostalgic trip through an important era in British film studio history. Derek Pykett spent many years of his life as a professional actor, working in theatre, television and films, and making his first movie appearance in what is now regarded as a classic, The Princess Bride (1986) directed by Rob Reiner. In 2001 he founded his own theatre company, Theatre Macabre, specialising in horror and fantasy. Shows produced include Dracula, Jack the Ripper and Witchfinder General. More recent years have seen him produce and direct documentaries for DVD, including AMICUS: House of Horrors (Alpha Home Entertainment, USA). Previously published work as an author includes, Michael Ripper Unmasked (Midnight Marquee, USA) and British Horror Film Locations (McFarland, USA). Derek and his partner Ruth live in England, and they have three dogs – Lucy, Willow and Woolly.

Menefee Here's a book that fills a vacant niche in film history: a well-documented book based on interviews with an extensive array of men an women that worked at the MGM British Studios. They share their memories of the people and films produced there. The author has done a stellar job locating these individuals and painstakingly documenting their recollections, as well covering the full breadth of eras. The publisher has produced a well-written and edited book that will please film students interested in MGM's British productions.
