In The Transformative Workplace, authors Carole and David Schwinn take us along on a trip around the world, letting us sit in on their conversations with over three dozen managers and leaders from organizations that range from small NGO’s to giant global corporations in diverse fields of endeavor. In every case, they represent transformative workplaces, where people can grow and develop to their highest potential as fully aware and conscious participants in the evolution of life on our planet. Their stories offer inspiration to others who aspire to create work that is worthy of the human spirit. Backed up by extensive research, the Schwinns’ provide evidence that fostering more conscious ways of being at work pays off in employees who are more loyal, hard working, productive and engaged. They are more positive, self-aware, inspired, creative, confident and able to work collaboratively across difference. They save their organizations billions of dollars in healthcare and lost time costs due to illness, depression, anxiety and other stress-related costs. In addition to those interviewed, the Schwinns’ share stories of dozens of other organizations around the world that are beginning to emulate these transformative approaches. Practical guidance is offered for how most anyone can make their own work more consistent with who they are or who they want to be in the world; how entrepreneurs can purposefully design their organizations for human growth and development; and, how leaders can create transformative workplaces through modeling, coaching and expanding the purpose of the enterprise. Other authors have written about enlightened or conscious organizations. They have eloquently spoken to what leaders in these organizations must do, how their policies and procedures are different, how their visions and values contribute to their character, and how these differences impact their performance in the marketplace. The Transformative Workplace stands out because it also shows how people themselves can be different, and how these differences positively affect their own lives, the lives of their families, their workplaces, their communities, and the wider society. In this book, the Schwinns’ suggest that somewhere between “living to work” or “working to live,” there is room for work that transforms us as we transform it, where we can grow lives of purpose and passion, where all people may prosper, and where we can contribute to a better and more peaceful world. Given how much time and energy most of us expend in work, let us hope that work of this kind one day becomes the standard by which we all measure our labor.

I found two components particularly valuable: 1) As a source of inspiration this book is full of stories of leaders who put the human spirit at the center of their organization's purpose. They see this as a sacred responsibility, not a means to greater profits. It is thrilling to know that there are people out there leading companies who want to help employees fulfill their potential and in the process make the world a better and more sustainable place. I've gotten so caught up in the negative stories of business that I needed some examples of the good going on out there. 2) As a resource of best practices for creating workplaces where people can thrive, the book identifies groups of people coming together to change the world of work and it outlines practices that are effective in making change happen. The book offers examples and solutions to the author's opening question: "How might the places where we work - in addition to being places where we accomplish the goals and purposes of the enterprise - also be the places where we become more of who we are meant to be as human beings?" If this question resonates with you you will appreciate this book.

Bass I am a "the cup is half full" person who looks for the good and positive in people and places. That includes the people and places that we spend so many hours working with. The Schwinn's book reinforces the possibilities of making a profit at the same time as being good stewards of our environment and our people - employees, suppliers, customers and anyone else that is touched by the company or organization. Yet it does not give us a Pollyanna view that this will always work, or that it is always easy.So if you are a "the cup is really half empty so don't kid yourself" type of person, I recommend you read this book to see examples of real transformative workplaces - that really DO grow people, prosperity and peace. No matter how you usually view the world, their book shows us small and large ways that we can make changes to improve our lives and that of others. You may want to buy two copies - one for yourself and one for your supervisor!

By Julianne Wilson I have found this volume engaging, accessible, instructive, and most of all, INSPIRING. It gives me hop to read of organizations and business around the world that are ALREADY utilizing methods of collaboration, communication, planning, visioning, and marketing that place key human, sustainable, healthy, positive values at the core of what they are doing -- and ARE SUCCESSFUL doing so. Transformative Workplace invites us to extend beyond the common default of "bottom line only" focus to realize that there is not only another way, but that there are VIABLE alternatives to this, ways in which businesses of all shapes and sizes can do well fiscally AND do well by their employees and the larger community they serve. This is exciting work. And the applications for other organizations and even social and family networks (and individuals) are wide ranging.
