Ambrose Bierce’s haunting 1890 short story An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge has a modern twist ending that never gets old. The narrative concerns the final thoughts of a Southern planter as he is being hanged by Union soldiers. In the brief period between the tightening of the noose and the actual breaking of his neck, something happens. The rope breaks and the man escapes. Or the man imagines he escapes. Which is it?
"…[the] greatest American short story… flawless... American genius."
- Kurt Vonnegut.

About the Author Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (1842-1914) was an American editorialist, journalist, short story writer, fabulist, and satirist. He wrote the short story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and compiled a satirical lexicon, The Devil's Dictionary. His vehemence as a critic, his motto "Nothing matters", and the sardonic view of human nature that informed his work, all earned him the nickname "Bitter Bierce".

A poignant and powerful short story that delves deeply into the human psyche. One thing that fascinated me was the placement of the 'troops' for the hanging. The military organization doesn't appear to have changed in all of the years since this book was penned.'Death is a dignitary' and in the 'military...silence and fixity are signs of deference'. The latter also resonates with me as retired military. I thought the writing was incredible. Transport yourself back to the Civil War and imagine the speech patterns and the differences in the diction.Excellent short story and after the conclusion there are some interesting tidbits concerning the author. Most highly recommended.
