How can this be a complete picture of Solomon if you don't include everything about his life? After all, we all learn a lot from others' failures, mistakes & sins as well as from their strengths.

His playfulness, his tenderness, and his unconditional love are the attributes that are etched within the memories of old. Lighthearted Look at Canine Companionship By Una poetisa Many poems in this collection made me laugh, and I nodded my head when reading other poems in recognition of doggy behavior experienced in my own home, from snatching food to drinking out of the toilet! Favorites of mine are Perfect Companion, Autumn Walk, Surrogate, and First Time at the Sheep Farm. But every poem is a joy. This book would be great for Dog People. Be sure to get several as stocking stuffers!

Only the first chapter deals with Gandhi-ji's travels; the rest is an exposition of his personal and political philosophy By Abhinav Agarwal This is a collection of six essays written by Mahatma Gandhi after his return to India from South Africa. The essays are, with one exception, a description of Gandhiji's philosophy and thinking. The lone exception is the eponymous chapter, "Third Class In Indian Railways", which, as the title suggests, is a mini-travelogue of his travels and travails on the trains in India at the time.The chapters are: 1. Third Class In Indian Railways 2. Vernacular as Media of Instruction 3. Swadeshi 4. Ahimsa 5. The Moral Basis of Co-operation 6. National DressAs can be seen, chapters two through six spell out the substantive part of Gandhiji's political, personal, and social philosophy that were to drive India's independence struggle agenda and vision. Even after his death, his ideals have inspired transformative movements in such places as South Africa, Poland, United States, and more recently in Egypt.Gandhiji's style of writing reflects at times his innate sense of humour. Most of it is evident in the first chapter, when he struggles for the right and strong words to describe the squalid state of rail travel at the time. Some comments could well apply in today's times, unfortunately. Refreshments sold to the passengers were dirty-looking, handed by dirtier hands, coming out of filthy receptacles and weighed in equally unattractive scales. These were previously sampled by millions of flies... [Highlight Loc. 26-28] Passengers have no benches or not enough to sit on. They squat on dirty floors and eat dirty food. They are permitted to throw the leavings of their food and spit where they like, sit how they like and smoke everywhere. The closets attached to these places defy description. I have not the power adequately to describe them without committing a breach of the laws of decent speech. [Highlight Loc. 36-47] On Indian trains alone passengers smoke with impunity in all carriages irrespective of the presence of the fair sex and irrespective of the protest of non-smokers. And this, notwithstanding a bye-law which prevents a passenger from smoking without the permission of his fellows in the compartment which is not allotted to smokers. [Highlight Loc. 52-54]When talking about Swadeshi, Gandhiji cleverly brings in the issue religion as being an integral part of swadeshi. At the time of his writing, his aim was at the proselyting efforts of missionaries, while acknowledging the often stellar role played by these missionaries in performing much-appreciated social services. Swadeshi is that spirit in us which restricts us to the use and service of our immediate surroundings to the exclusion of the more remote. Thus, as for religion, in order to satisfy the requirements of the definition, I must restrict myself to my ancestral religion. [Highlight Loc. 103-5] ...will not the great missionary bodies of India, to whom she owes a deep debt of gratitude for what they have done and are doing, do still better and serve the spirit of Christianity better by dropping the goal of proselytising while continuing their philanthropic work? [Highlight Loc. 116-18]Seeing how the political narrative in India today sees religion and politics divorced from each other on the face of it, yet tightly locked in the most unholy of alliances, Gandhiji would have been pained no doubt. I do not believe that religion has nothing to do with politics. The latter divorced from religion is like a corpse only fit to be buried. [Highlight Loc. 131-32]I am not sure I would see tea in such a negative light as the Mahatma does. Coffee has been a staple ingredient of the Indian, South Indian for sure, diet for a few centuries, but then again, credit (or discredit) for its spread must again go to the English. I wonder how he would have taken the even more insidious spread of cola beverages in India... Lord Curzon set the fashion for tea-drinking. And that pernicious drug now bids fair to overwhelm the nation. It has already undermined the digestive apparatus of hundreds of thousands of men and women... [Highlight Loc. 173-75]

By B S Gupta It pertains to Bapu's essays/speeches around the year 2017,nothing seems to have changed except that 3rd class itself has been abolished and condition of 2nd class which has taken its place ,sometimes is worse than what Bapu has described. Contrary to Bapu's advice, Netas and influential people still prefer travelling by Air or AC first class,and middle class by AC 2nd or AC 3rd , still lower class by 2nd sleeper,and poor majority by 2nd unreserved class, it looks things are not going to change even in near future.Cleanliness is missing,the served food is often non edible and very costly.Even in AC class toilets do not have water and are hardly cleaned.The railway stations ,railway lines and waiting rooms are as dirty as possible.Situation is not much different from what you have described-you have missed thefts ,accidents and beggars which have only increased.Similarly nothing has happened on Ahimsa , Swadeshi and national language and dress code fronts.Your views are as valid as they were 96 years ago.

Mothers and sons By Pam Gearhart This is a short novel, more of a psychological study really, about a young man, his ego, and his mother.Philip Verrian is 37 years old, never married, and lives with his mother. Philip has found his first success as a writer. He's written a serial for a magazine and is getting some positive attention from readers and critics. He receives a letter from a young woman who claims to be dying and asks him to reveal the ending of the serial. (I'll bet George R. R. Martin is getting similar letters.)Philip takes the letter to his publisher, who thinks the letter would be good publicity but he wants to make sure it isn't a hoax. He investigates and learns that it is indeed a fake. The young woman who wrote the letter apologizes, explaining that it was a youthful prank, but Philip's having none of it -- his ego is wounded. His response is scathing and unforgiving. He feels a little bit guilty about taking it so seriously, then puts it out of his mind.Most of the rest of the novel takes place in a country house, where Philip has been invited to spend a week by a vapid but wealthy older woman who's trying to make a name for herself in society. On the train to the house, Philip encounters a young woman who intrigues him. It's not a spoiler to reveal that this is the same woman who wrote the letter -- Howells makes this obvious. The rest of the novel details what happened during that week and a brief time after.So -- there's not much plot. What kept me reading was Howell's observations about Philip and the people he encounters. Philip thinks he knows himself, and that he knows women. He doesn't see how he's been poisoned against women by his mother. She's really quite smart, and mothers who want to keep their sons close could take lessons from her. In addition to watching her machinations, I also enjoyed Howells' digs at this egocentric writer.The title of the book puzzled me so I looked up "fennel" and "rue". Fennel is a main ingredient in absinthe, often used in literature as a powerful mind-altering drink, and rue has been used to induce abortion. I'm not sure what to make of that, except that fennel might represent Philip's mother's sly control of her son, and rue as representing independence and freedom of women to control their bodies.The kindle edition has some formatting issues and a few typos, but not enough to really detract. If you like psychological studies, and fiction set in the early 20th century featuring people of a certain class, I think you'd like this very much.

Still, this edition is not quite what I remember.1) This edition does not feature illustrations by Maurice Sendak. Instead, it features a few (about 4) colored etching-type illustrations by Arthur Hughes.2) The cover page says "unabridged". As I do not have the one I read as a child, I cannot say this is false, but I remember it to be a full-size novel. This edition is about the size of a pocket calculator: 3"X4.5". The font size is about a 10. Yet, each chapter is only a few pages long and the total page count is 131.This edition claims to be unabridged from MacDonald's 1867 edition of the story included in a collection of fairy tales. As fairly tale collections are frequently abridged stories, I wonder if this edition is claiming to be unabridged from an edition that itself was shortened.I purchased this copy cheap, knowing there must be a reason for it. Therefore, I was not disappointed. Still, I have now also purchased the edition with Sendak as illustrator.For a pocket book, I find this to be very nice. Still, if you are unfamiliar with the story, I would recommend a different edition.

20 of 23 people found the following review helpful. MacDonald Magic By Joy Lorraine As a connoiseur of fairy tales, I consume en masse, but this George MacDonald classic stands out in my collection. Witty and sweet, this book was as appealing to me as an adult as it would be to any juvenile consumers with a glimmer of pixie dust in their eyes. Any child who loves C.S. Lewis's classic Chronicles of Narnia will delight in the author who fascinated and influenced Lewis in his own writing. MacDonald never writes to condescend, and thus he entertains all who read. The humor and twists in the story excite and enrapture, while the force of honest spirituality give it a lasting impetus and impact. The Light Princess is truly a nugget from the Golden age of children's literature.

Very Original, and some Darn Good Writing By Darien Summers The Light Princess has every element that a good fairy tale should have: tragedy, love, good, evil, magic, charm and a happy ending. I'm sure there's more. The book does seem to be a bit more geared towards girls than boys since the premise of the book seems to be more or less that love conquers all, and the book lacks the bravado that boys seem to enjoy. Nonetheless, the book is well written, original in my opinion and well worth the effort to read even if you're an adult.The book is about a princess who has a curse placed on her at birth; a curse that renders her weightless and hence, not prone to the laws of gravity. Another side effect of this curse is her tendency to laugh towards anything, no matter how serious or unfunny the circumstance may be. And so, the curse goes on into adulthood with the princess pleasantly adapting to her circumstances, and her parents not so pleasantly adapting to her circumstances as they do learn to cope, but try everything to break the curse. Along her journeys, the princess meets a prince who falls deeply in love with her. I won't say how, but his love of her, and then, her love of him ends up breaking the princess' curse. The prince also ends up being the remedy to the princess' incessant laughing.The ending is very typical of fairy tales, but the road to it is very uniquely carved out and deserving of praise. Roberts Game Boy World is a much needed and well laid out look at the beginning of one of the most important parts of video game history. The book offers both visual examples of every title and a thoughtful review that not only looks at the game, but the influences and ideas that were surrounding the time of each games' creation. It is both enjoyable to read through and indispensable as a reference guide. I look forward to 1990.

Author Jeremy Parish takes a great deal of care in thoughtfully exploring the first year of the device, encompassing both the device's creation and its early library of software.Like all the work Parish creates, Game Boy World is an exceptionally professional and insightful take on game design and preservation. A must-read for gamers who are open to learning something about the history of the medium they so enjoy.

Excellent photography and magazine style pages make this a quick read with lots to look at. Too many gaming books are dry with nothing but walls of text, not here. I really hope to see more books in this series. Looking forward to covers with Play It Loud gameboys in place of the original grey brick.

It leads you to believe the author will be sharing information that is unique and that will set you up for success. The same information is available FOR FREE in the Etsy seller handbook. Also, the formatting of this book was horribly distracting. Please separate paragraphs with spaces, use bolded text to indicate headings, and stay consistent in your capitalization of "Etsy."

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown". Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

A great, good read By Frederic C Putnam One of the great poems in the English language--and certainly a top contender for the greatest narrative poem. A retelling of the Alfred the Great's defeat of Guthrum and the Danes at the Battle of Ethandune (or the victory of the true power of Christianity over the inherent weakness of paganism), written to be read aloud or to oneself (but please do read it aloud). A ranking of ten stars would be more accurate. [This review refers to the first edition.]

The100-page saga of King Alfred the Great's apparently hopeless war against the Vikings is all one dreams poetry might be - stirring the heart and soul, filled with beauty, wisdom and excitement. A timeless message of hope and wonder. A few passages stumble, as is inevitable in a work of this length, but these can be overlooked. Read this wonderful poem and it will lighten and change the world for you. The greatest antidote to depression and despair that I know!

Chesterton died in 1936 and The Ballad was written years before that, yet he could already foresee the bitter harvest that would come as a result of the growth of utilitarian humanism. The Ballad is the powerful retelling of the story of King Alfred's ultimate triumph over the invading Danes, despite repeated losses, decimated forces and overwhelming adversity. It's a great story of a significant moment in history, but in it Chesterton also teaches us much we can apply in our own cultural wars against the forces of the "New Dark Ages". He brings his prodigious intellect and wit to the task and in so doing offers hope to the "men signed of the cross of Christ (going) gaily in the dark". The book is filled with memorable quotations and insights that will leave readers inspired to perservere in the face of their own adversities. It is abook worth owning and cherishing for the ages!
