It would be but stirring a muddy pool to inquire—not what motives induced, but what forces compelled sir Wilton Lestrange to marry a woman nobody knew. It is enough to say that these forces were mainly ignoble, as manifested by their intermittent character and final cessation. The mésalliance occasioned not a little surprise, and quite as much annoyance, among the county families,—failing, however, to remind any that certain of their own grandmothers had been no better known to the small world than lady Lestrange.

There are several main characters, including two precious young people, Richard and Barbara. The setting is in Britain when there were barons and peasants, the rich and the poor. It is a character study and romance, where honesty, hard work and love for one's neighbor are commended by MacDonald. Typical of MacDonald’s writings, there are many spiritual nuggets one can feed on throughout the book. The Reverend Windgate, one of the characters, is helpful to many of the characters, just as the author, a clergyman, was in real life. It is an evil versus good tale in which the generosity and kindness of some of the good characters, even some living in poverty, shines through. C. S. Lewis, author of The Chronicles of Narnia and well-known Christian apologist, made frequent mention of MacDonald in his books, unabashedly calling MacDonald his "master." If you like MacDonald, I think you will enjoy and profit from this story as I did. If you have never read MacDonald, I would recommend this book as a starter.

I can see how the works of George MacDonald have not so subtly influenced the imaginings of C.S. Lewis. I greatly appreciate the way in which MacDonald's characters become a canvas for showcasing the ever deepening relationship between man and God. I found the descriptions of glory as revealed through nature very refreshing and the portraits of noble hearts even more so. The story was a great encouragement to me and faith journey!

This one is a great example of how he takes believable characters and leads them through life-changing experiences. Sometimes it is obvious that he is using the characters as a voicebox, but you won't mind so much when you read the astoundingly deep things MacDonald has to say through his characters.
