About the Author Carolyn Wells, June 18, 1862 March 26, 1942 was an American writer and poet. She was best known for her books of poetry and humor until around 1910 she read one of Anna Katherine Green’s mysteries and took up the genre. Many of her mysteries featured the detective Fleming Stone. She was married to Hadwin Houghton, heir to the Houghton-Mifflin publishing company. She was a collector of poetry by other authors, and, upon her death, she bequeathed her collection of the works of Walt Witman to the Library of Congress.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Satisfactory but not superior Wells Outing. By drkhimxz "Penny Wise" and his able female assistant, do finally make an appearance in the book, but not until much to-ing and fro-ing by the amateurs and by the bumbling official law enforcement agents who are always helpless in the face of the problems faced by the heroine (or, sometimes, hero) of her stories. Until that time, there is a good deal of fluttering around by the friends and relatives of the ":little girl", that is, the fair young maiden, whose forced engagement to the not-so-appealing victim, is at the center of the "who dun it". I like the Carolyn Wells mysteries although, as with this one, they have the air of having been tossed together according to a much used recipe for writing one of her Lady in Distress stories. In this case, other potential husbands and her brother are at the center of the search for the killer of the rich man "from the West" who was not much liked by the pillars of NYC society who make up the core of the book's list of persons. There is a threatening letter from one beaux and an outright "I would kill him" uttered by another. All are part of the stew into which private detective Wise is dropped by a desperate call for help heard by a friend of his assistant. The setting is NYC ca 1920-21 (when the book was published), a period in which nice girls with money do not work and where young swains address their beloved as "little girl" and promise to take over her responsibilities and all problem solving related to a man's responsibility to protect his beloved from all need to deal with the seamier side of life, like work, money (except the spending of it), decision-making outside the nurturant role with children, and the like. Stylistically, Wells does not write a tight manuscript nor is it a 'reader now you should be able to solve the crime problem'sort of thing. Still and all, I find them, and did find this one, somewhat amusing and quite appealing whatever their faults as social commentary and whatever might be considered dated social expectations. The somewhat lower than customary rating for me in reviewing her books is due to what I thought was a bit more than usual dawdling and "little girling" in this one.
