She was best known for her books of poetry and humor until around 1910 she read one of Anna Katherine Green’s mysteries and took up the genre. By drkhimxz "Penny Wise" and his able female assistant, do finally make an appearance in the book, but not until much to-ing and fro-ing by the amateurs and by the bumbling official law enforcement agents who are always helpless in the face of the problems faced by the heroine (or, sometimes, hero) of her stories. Until that time, there is a good deal of fluttering around by the friends and relatives of the ":little girl", that is, the fair young maiden, whose forced engagement to the not-so-appealing victim, is at the center of the "who dun it". I like the Carolyn Wells mysteries although, as with this one, they have the air of having been tossed together according to a much used recipe for writing one of her Lady in Distress stories. In this case, other potential husbands and her brother are at the center of the search for the killer of the rich man "from the West" who was not much liked by the pillars of NYC society who make up the core of the book's list of persons. There is a threatening letter from one beaux and an outright "I would kill him" uttered by another. All are part of the stew into which private detective Wise is dropped by a desperate call for help heard by a friend of his assistant. The setting is NYC ca 1920-21 (when the book was published), a period in which nice girls with money do not work and where young swains address their beloved as "little girl" and promise to take over her responsibilities and all problem solving related to a man's responsibility to protect his beloved from all need to deal with the seamier side of life, like work, money (except the spending of it), decision-making outside the nurturant role with children, and the like. Stylistically, Wells does not write a tight manuscript nor is it a 'reader now you should be able to solve the crime problem'sort of thing. Still and all, I find them, and did find this one, somewhat amusing and quite appealing whatever their faults as social commentary and whatever might be considered dated social expectations. The somewhat lower than customary rating for me in reviewing her books is due to what I thought was a bit more than usual dawdling and "little girling" in this one.

The strategies and tips described in this book make logical sense but he explains how they work anyway. This grinder’s guide is a great resource for anyone looking to up their fantasy basketball game from beginner to advanced. I got a lot out of his section on the general lineup composition and how you should change your strategy based on the different types of games you encounter. You will definitely have a deeper knowledge of the best fantasy basketball tactics after reading this book cover to cover.

Pretty much everything is covered. Choosing a DFS site, the different roster and scoring rules. Coming up with lineups for all the different game types (cash games, GPPs). The section on research was extremely helpful as was the last chapter that dissected a winning GPP lineup and the thought process that went into generating it.It's an excellent read for any daily fantasy basketball player. Highly recommended.

Hartkopf I got into fantasy sports betting about 4 months ago and bet over $900 during the football and basketball season (to date) earning $1,100...not bad for a rookie. I've read several books but this is easily the most useful and practical, meaning I can use what I learned tomorrow, book I've read to date. If you want to get serious about making money in fantasy sports betting, read this book. I read it in one day and plan to read it again, tomorrow!

We can always learn something from such amazing life stories By Jaroslav Brzon Heinz Balk is a succesful and wise man, who shares his life experiences. We can always learn something from such amazing life stories. I have to say, it was very close to me, because I have got a similar business background in finance, just in investment banking and we have got also one big passion in common = classic cars. And although I'm 40 years younger, I decided to live my life in the same way and combine my passion with profit. It's also a motto of one of my companies: Invest with passion! I can recomend the book to anyone, who wants the learn from an experience, how you can live a succesful life if you go ahead for your passion and stay with it, never give it up. And I can also confirm that it's really possible to live a life that way! :)

The Problems of Philosophy (1912) is one of Bertrand Russell's attempts to create a brief and accessible guide to the problems of philosophy. Focusing on problems he believes will provoke positive and constructive discussion, Russell concentrates on knowledge rather than metaphysics: If it is uncertain that external objects exist, how can we then have knowledge of them but by probability. There is no reason to doubt the existence of external objects simply because of sense data. Russell guides the reader through his famous 1910 distinction between "knowledge by acquaintance and knowledge by description" and introduces important theories of Plato, Aristotle, René Descartes, David Hume, John Locke, Immanuel Kant, G. W. F. Hegel and others to lay the foundation for philosophical inquiry by general readers and scholars alike.

The problems of philosophy, by Bertrand Russell

Review "Treats its subject in a way that will arouse the interest of any one who has any latent ability to become interested in it." --The New York Times

From the Back Cover Clear and accessible, this little book is an intelligible and stimulating guide to those problems of philosophy which often mistakenly make the subject seem too lofty and abstruse for the lay mind.

About the Author Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) was born in England and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. His long career established him as one of the most influential philosophers, mathematicians, and social reformers of the twentieth century.

I figured it was going to be a pure drag...you know, huge words, vague sentences, so on and so on. I have to say that this book is the complete opposite. Bertrand Russell brings the topics right down to earth and explains them in a way that the average person can understand. The last chapter, "The Value of Philosophy" is written with beautiful style and is an enjoyment to read. Here is a quote from this chapter:"Philosophy, though unable to tell us with certainty what is the true answer to the doubts which it raises, is able to suggest many possibilities which enlarge our thoughts and free them from the tyranny of custom. Thus, while diminishing our feeling of certainty as to what things are, it greatly increases our knowledge as to what they may be; it removes the somewhat arrogant dogmatism of those who have never traveled into the region of liberating doubt, and it keeps alive our sense of wonder by showing familiar things in an unfamiliar aspect."This book definitely has sparked in me an interest in philosophy. If you are even remotely interested in the subject, I recommend you buying it too.

57 of 59 people found the following review helpful. Thought-provoking... By A Customer This book was my first foray into philosophy, and surprisingly, it proved to be very enjoyable. For many, just the word "philosophy" evokes images of ancient thinkers, yet not in a very appealing light: old men sitting around, absent-mindedly stroking their chins as they ponder the meaning of life. Yet, philosophy does not deserve this reputation. It is not just some hobby for stodgy elders, or those with nothing better to do. Rather, it is quite the opposite; it is an endlessly intriguing subject, one which causes you to consider things you may have never thought of before. Survive the test, and the reaffirmation that results will be worth it.Philosophy contains no easy answers. It poses a myriad of questions which can force one to doubt, and even reexamine, one's beliefs -- even those which previously seemed so resolute. This may at first be difficult or discombobulating, but persistance is rewarded with an even stronger foundation than before.I will not attempt to summarize this book, as people before me have already explained it sufficiently. However, I will say that this book was a great influence, and a wonderful introduction to the world of philosophy. For such an abstruse and "deep" matter, one would think that most would be intimidated; however, Russell handles it splendidly. He writes in a lucid, unpretentious manner, and spares the reader any unnecessary confusion.Even to this day, my friends tease me about "philosophy of a table." It is impossible for me to adequately describe this book, but let me say that it is brilliant and refreshing. For me, philosophy is not meant to give an individual a headache. It is simply for those who wish to gain a better understanding of themselves and their surroundings. And this book, exceptional in its quality, is an excellent choice to get you started on that interminable journey towards the ever so elusive Truth.

21 of 21 people found the following review helpful. An Enticing Introduction To Philosophy/Epistemology By Taos Turner "Philosophy aims primarily at knowledge," says Bertrand Russell. "But it cannot be maintained that philosophy has had any very great measure of success in its attempts to provide definite answers to its questions."With that caveat, which comes in the last chapter of The Problems of Philosophy, Russell defines in part what philosophy is and what it can accomplish. The definition casts a rather dim light over the field of philosophy, calling into questions its value as a discipline worthy of our attention. But Russell goes on to say that philosophy's value won't be found in its ability to provide answers ("since no definite answers can, as a rule, be known to be true"). Instead, philosophy is valuable "for the sake of the questions themselves.""These questions enlarge our conception of what is possible, enrich our intellectual imagination and diminish the dogmatic assurance which closes the mind against speculation," notes Russell. He says our minds are "rendered great" when we contemplate "the greatness of the universe." This enables our minds to form a "union with the universe which constitutes its highest good."In the pages that precede this final chapter on the value of philosophy, Russell highlights the questions he considers to be most "positive" and "constructive." In his view, philosophy's most important questions relate to epistemology, or the theory of knowledge. As a result, most of this book deals with questions like these:What is the difference between appearance and reality? What is a belief? What is the relationship between beliefs and facts? What, if anything, can we know for certain? What is the difference between deductive and inductive reasoning? What is intuitive knowledge? What is truth? How can we distinguish between truth and falsehood?Russell doesn't always provide "definite answers" to these questions. Yet he does a marvelous job of helping us to think through them in creative and logically sound ways. The Problems of Philosophy is a brief book that packs a nice punch. It is easy to read, smoothly written, and will likely appeal almost anyone interested in philosophy. Perhaps the biggest problem with the Problems of Philosophy is its narrow scope. The book fails completely to address many of the problems that people often associate with philosophy. Because of this, I would give the book four stars, not the five shown above. Russell makes almost no mention of ethics or morality. He also avoids God, religion, evil, value, aesthetics, philosophy of mind, and the list goes on. But this is a flaw that can be forgiven - for what Russell sacrifices in scope, he makes up for in clarity and style. He often attaches practical examples to more abstract ideas, and this makes the problems of philosophy more understandable for everyone. One may agree or not with Russell's assertions, but most will appreciate his ability to take some of philosophy's classic problems and make them digestible, almost entertaining to the average reader. This is an enjoyable book that is just as relevant today as when it was first published in 1912.

From the boxing clubs of 1970s East London to Hollywood's red carpets—the knockout autobiography of one of Britain's best-loved actors Ray Winstone's amazing talent for bringing out the humanity buried inside his often brutal screen characters—violent offender in Scum, wife-beater in Nil by Mouth, retired blagger in Sexy Beast—has made him one of the most charismatic actors of his generation. But how do these uncompromising and often haunting performances square with his off-duty reputation as the ultimate salt-of-the-earth diamond geezer? The answer lies in the East End of his youth. Revisiting the bomb-sites and boozers of his childhood and adolescence, Ray Winstone takes the reader on an unforgettable tour of a cockney heartland which is at once irresistibly mythic and undeniably real. Told with its author's trademark blend of brutal directness and roguish wit, Young Winstone offers a fascinating insight into the social history of East London, as well as a school of hard knocks coming-of-age story with a powerful emotional punch.

Review * A gripping insight into his youth ... For fans of his violent turns in Scum, Nil by Mouth or Sexy Beast, this is a perfect literary counterpart. For everyone else, it's an engaging portrait of a boy done good Telegraph * Brilliant ... Young Winstone is a must-read Shortlist * As much about London as his nascent career. Ray made such an impression in Scum that I still remember his prison number, and he is just as vivid on his formative years, losing his virginity at 14 standing up by the mini-golf, and generally running riot around Mile End. There'll be another volume, I hope Independent on Sunday, Best books on film in 2014 * Worth a read for anyone who enjoys Ray's cheeky charms Empire

About the Author Ray Winstone spent the early years of his life playing on the bomb-sites of Plaistow. At the age of eight, his family moved him up the A10 to the cultural wasteland of Enfield, and from that moment on, Ray was constantly looking for ways to get back home to the East End—from "banging up" on his dad's market stalls, to winning 80 out of 88 bouts as a three-time London schoolboy boxing champion for Bethnal Green's famous Repton club.

This audiobook includes a discussion of the plot, characters, main themes, and political philosophy of Ayn Rand.

In 2009, with the global economy hemorrhaging jobs and Western governments using hundreds of billions of dollars in taxpayer money to "bail out" troubled financial firms and large companies, frustrated people and political analysts turned to a book written over 50 years earlier as a guide out of the abyss.

Though Atlas Shrugged had been a popular title when Ayn Rand published it in 1957, it's quite possible that the only reference to it that many Americans heard before 2009 came from the hit TV series Mad Men. However, this staple of conservative and libertarian readers took on new life as the new Obama Administration sought to use government resources to fix financial problems.

Conservative commentators like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh praised the book to their audiences, and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas labeled it one of his favorite novels. By January 2009, one article in The Wall Street Journal was titled, "Atlas Shrugged from Fiction to Fact in 52 Years".

In that time, the giant novel that Rand considered her magnum opus has seen its sales spike dramatically, eventually reaching the top of Amazon's best sellers list. Even today, it is still within Kindle's top 500 titles, making it one of the most heavily read books of the last several years.

Today, many have heard of the title and are partially familiar with it, but the sheer size of the book makes it inaccessible for people who don't have a lot of time to read or ponder Rand's philosophy. Thankfully, that problem is now solved with Everything You Need to Know About Atlas Shrugged, a primer that can get anyone caught up to speed on the plot, characters, themes, symbols, and philosophy of Rand's classic

Occasionally to pick up try once again to fathom the many allegories mysteries and symbols only to return the volume to the drawer. To await the next time I I was curious. Yes I had read the reviews but I was motivated to personally unravel the complex issues for myself. Now I feel comfortable with at least a minimum of comprehension . THANKs for what you have enabled all of us to understand. JimAviator.

'There they stood, bumbling into lines with a bit of difficulty: Mother Finland's chosen sacrifice to world history'

Unknown Soldiers follows the fates of a ramshackle troupe of machine-gunners in the Second World War, as they argue, joke, swear, cadge a loaf of bread or a cigarette, combat both boredom and horror in the swamps and pine forests - and discover that war will make or break them. One of Finland's best-loved books, this gritty and unromantic depiction of battle honours the dogged determination of a country and the bonds of brotherhood forged between men at war, as they fight for their lives.

'A rediscovered classic... profound and enriching ... Unknown Soldiers still has the power to shock' Herald

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Story. Interesting translation from the Finnish By Sam Tolman This story epitomises the suffering of Finnish soldiers during the continuation war. The translation is difficult to read at first, because it attempts to represent a complex series of local dialects which do not translate readily into English. For example, the depiction of the clipped, laconic Karelian dialect of Rokka is somewhat jarring as a Southern American accent, when read by someone who is familiar with the Karelian dialect. There would, however, be no way to translate the real dialect, so this device works at one level.

I highly recommend "Unknown Soldiers By The Gyro Captain Vaino Linna's "Unknown Soldiers" is a classic in Finland, yet is relatively unknown in the US. The novel is well written and, in the Penguin Classics edition, well translated. Linna portrays the average Finnish soldier as complex characters, with varied motivations for their actions. I highly recommend "Unknown Soldiers!"

What Would You Call...?: (Clean, Humorous Riddles That Can Usually Be Solved With a Pun), by Tam S. Hutchinson Jr.

Review What Would You Call...?  is a clever book in concept and the illustrations add immensely to the project. The humor is simple and obvious and at times quite enjoyable. However at other times, it feels like an old-time comic routine from a show in the Catskills - each pun waiting for that drum roll or riff - Ba DUMP bump!.... With an objective edit, and if marketed as a gift book, there should be readers for this book, albeit probably an older audience, since they may remember a time when humor was this obvious in nature.--Publisher Services, a division of Bar Code Graphics, Inc.

From the Author What Would You Call...? has been a lot of fun to write because language is interesting.  In many ways, words can be like gems, which have different facets.  When we view words from different perspectives, we get a different understanding.   There are two purposes for this book.  One purpose is to be a gift book, and the other purpose is to give the reader or readers a few chuckles. Laughter can be therapeutic. Sharing a laugh can be doubly enjoyable.

About the Author Tam Hutchinson recently retired as a community college math instructor. He has been a manager, computer programmer, and poultry farmer, also. He earned both his bachelors and masters degrees from Wake Forest University. He lives with his wife, Karen, in North Carolina. He and his wife have five grown sons, Andrew, Joseph, Evan, Stephen, and Timothy, all of whom contributed to the book.

A fun group of stories of late 19th early 20th Cent England By Charles Montgomery I also thought I was going to learn about knot tying, but pleasantly found out that the knots were in the mixups and goings on of the characters. It's a fun to read book in which we learn about the language and character of lower class Englishmen. The stories are humorous and well written. We see rascals getting just rewards, badgered husbands and wives turning the tables on their others, tricksters getting tricked, and all leave the reader with a nice feeling. As a free Kindle book you can't go wrong to try it out.

Bought to the printed page on the back of the cult internet sensation and an immensely successful Crowdfunding campaign contributed to by many of the artists involved, ‘’Dear Mr. Kershaw’’ is the result of 7 years’ surreal and quite bonkers work. ‘’Derek’’, with help from his friend ‘’Wilf’’, is a retired gent who back in 2008 set out on a bizarre crusade, writing good old-fashioned letters to pop and rock stars regarding lyrical inaccuracies and ambiguities in their most famous songs and often hilariously getting the wrong end of the stick. The letters are eminently publishable in their own right, mixing sharp wit, confusion and biscuits with trips to the shops and unarguable logic in relation to questioning the offending chart hits under scrutiny. What makes this book an essential purchase however is that, with the missives online for all to see on what was becoming a hugely popular website, the artists quite unexpectedly started to reply. ‘’Dear Mr. Kershaw’’ features over 65 of the best and funniest letters and responses from famous and legendary names spanning every reach of the pop, rock, metal, prog and punk spectrum, all relishing their involvement ‘’in character’’ and revealing their own in many cases hitherto unknown humorous sides. Amongst those to be saluted for their great sportsmanship are Noddy Holder, Billy Bragg, Was Not Was, The Stereo MCs, Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics, Saxon, Tom Robinson, Stiff Little Fingers, Rick Wakeman, Paul Heaton, Squeeze, Toyah, Howard Jones, The Divine Comedy, Kim Wilde, and of course the gentleman himself Mr Nik Kershaw Also includes 100 ‘’mini-letters’’ and Polymer Animal Popstars Highly recommended to anyone who likes music and laughing

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Erudite and amusing By Max Crowe A charmingly literate and affectionate send-up of pop music by an English pensioner possessing an uncommonly diverse knowledge of the medium. Although its contents skew a bit in the direction of U.K. artists who aren't as well known on American shores, a keen reader can thoroughly enjoy the witticisms even without being familiar with the subject of the lampooning. The absurdist glimpse that Derek and Wilf provide into the relaxed pace of a Bournemouth retiree's life reminds me a bit of the little-known vintage American radio comedy show "Vic and Sade". A must-read for anybody who has ever enjoyed a "Weird" Al Yankovic parody.

We have only started on our development of our country—we have not as yet, with all our talk of wonderful progress, done more than scratch the surface. The progress has been wonderful enough—but when we compare what we have done with what there is to do, then our past accomplishments are as nothing. When we consider that more power is used merely in ploughing the soil than is used in all the industrial establishments of the country put together, an inkling comes of how much opportunity there is ahead. And now, with so many countries of the world in ferment and with so much unrest every where, is an excellent time to suggest something of the things that may be done in the light of what has been done.

53 of 53 people found the following review helpful. Nothing changes By Michael A Paradies Sometimes with the pace of business we don't take the time to review the thoughts and concepts of the great people of the past. When I read this book I was amazed at his level of thinking. We tend to believe that "our" generation is always coming up with the great thoughts and ideas. If this is your thinking you need to step back 100 years or so to the life and times of Henry Ford. All we are doing is reinventing what he did.

44 of 47 people found the following review helpful. "A fascinating look at the works of an early industrialist" By David G. Stokes It was amazing to read that many of the ideas and ideals around the turn of the twentieth century are still used today. Ford goes into great detail describing the origination of the Ford motor company, the labor force, the assembly line, and financial situations of the company. At a time when most of the male workers across the country were working for fifty cents a day, Ford incorporated a minimum wage of from three to five dollars a day. Henry Ford did a good job writing this book as well. There were several examples of sage advice include which are quoted by speakers and writers to this day. He was truly a visionary, business minded genius. The world was certainly improved by his presence. I'm looking forward to reading other of his works in the future.

21 of 22 people found the following review helpful. The Mind of Ford By Biz Reader First I want to tell you what this book is not. It is not a biography. It really isn't a biography of the Ford motor company either. What it is is the mind of Ford on paper. Henry Ford was a pure genius! This book is about how Henry ran his company and about his thoughts and ideals on business. You will really get to know the man behind the company in this book. A few of the chapter titles are "What I Learned about Business", "The Secret of Manufacturing and Serving", "Wages", "Why Not Always have Good Business" and "Money - Master or Servant". This is one of the top business books ever written. I think it was written very well and it just grabs your attention from the begining. If you are looking for a great business book or just a great book about the real Henry Ford then you need not look any further. He certainly was one of the best business men to ever live.

James Joyce: The Ultimate Collection & other Bonus works, by James Joyce, Thomas Hardy, EDGAR ALLAN POE, Franz Kafka

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Frank and Malachy McCourt and 13 Irish actors bring Joyce's short stories to life in this well-produced audiobook. None of the readers employ a thick accent in the narrative portions, but for dialogue they let their imitative talents shine and their Irish lilts bloom. Brendan Coyle and Charles Keating, reading "A Little Cloud" and "Grace" respectively, give such wonderful expression to the idiosyncrasies of every individual voice that the listener is never confused even when numerous men are talking. Joyce wrote only sparingly in actual dialect, but most of the readers interpret his intentions freely and successfully. Fionnula Flanagan is perfect reading "A Mother," her voice shifting easily between prim and proper tones and fiery indignation punctuated with little sighs. It helps that Joyce's writing is so masterful that when Flanagan and the two other actresses read the three stories that revolve around women, their words sound utterly natural. Not all the performances are on the same level—Stephen Rea's cold, somber voice is apt for the meditative beginning and ending sections of the collection's most famous story, "The Dead," but too flat for the central description of a lively party. This audiobook creates the atmosphere of a fireside storytelling session that will hold any listener in rapt attention. (May) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Library Journal Joyce's classic has been recorded before, of course, but in this new version, each of the 15 stories will be read by a different person, including writers Frank McCourt, Malachy McCourt, and Patrick McCabe, and actors Ciaran Hinds and Colm Meaney. Review "Cold is the heart that can resist a warm Irish accent like Gerard Doyle's, especially when that voice is offering splendid material like this Joyce classic.…Heartbreaking epiphanies abound, and Doyle artfully walks the vocal line between empathy and cool efficiency with his performance." ---AudioFile

This Joyce guy might amount to something By Michael Battaglia I wish I could stand up here and make some pretentious claim that this is the "greatest short story collection of all time!" or something along those lines but I generally don't read short stories or short story collections. But I like James Joyce and so figured what the heck, I made it through Ulysses, this should be a cakewalk. So I read it and if you were wowed by Ulysses then this should reconfirm Joyce's genius for you and that he could do other writing besides that wacky postmodern stuff (before there really was a postmodern). If you're not a Joyce fan most of these (other than a notable handful) probably won't convert you. In essence these are Joyce's portraits of the people of Dublin and the city itself, most of these stories are character sketches, mostly following a few people around as they go about their lives. They were written over a period of time so the quality does vary a bit, the first few stories I don't find anything special but by the time you get to around "Two Gallants" the quality takes a sharp spike upward and stays there right until the end. The prose is fairly easy to follow, the worst part is deciphering all the Irish names and slang that are used liberally for obvious reasons . . . if anything it showed me how two cultures who technically speak the language can sound so different. The stories run the gamut of the "slice of life" genre, if such a thing exists, showing people from all walks of life and all classes of society, showing them as realistically as Joyce could, all their fears and foibles, warts and all. At his best he makes you live the lives of the characters and immerses you deeply into the city of Dublin, probably more than any group of short stories has ever brought a city to life. If you're still not convinced, then take this advice, buy the book for the sake of only one story, the last story in the collection, "The Dead" . . . simply put it is one of the best pieces of short fiction I have ever read. It starts off mundanely enough at a party but by the time the characters leave the party and go back to their hotel the writing becomes something almost otherworldly and Joyce starts writing some of the most evocative prose ever put on paper. If the last few pages don't send chills down your spine, then you must be dead. That's the only explanation. After that gem, everything else is just icing on the cake. Simply put, everyone should read "The Dead" and if you're the type of person whose fancy shall be struck by the rest of the stories here, so much the better.

Martin Having grown up in a small town much like Joyce's Dublin, this book has a special significance for me. I've seen so many people from my town graduating from high school without really understanding that there is an entire world outside the place they grew up and lacking the ambition to go explore it. I fear many of them will spend their lives "getting by" in a job they hate, raising children who will inevitably do the same thing. Joyce's "Dubliners" depicts this cycle with as much complexity and compassion as any author I've read.In an age where the most publicized fiction tends to be simple-minded and genre-bound, it's refreshing to come across a writer with Joyce's complexity. "Dubliners" is so rich in its intellectual and symbolic atmosphere that many readers may be put off by the overall weight of the prose. The writing is so thick with metaphorical contexts that the literal content of the story occasionally becomes obscured, which can be frustrating for those not used to reading Joyce. Yet, while difficult, "Dubliners" is far from impossible to decipher, and although these stories function well as a whole, they are also more or less self-contained, which makes "Dubliners" easier to get through than Joyce's other works(it's a lot easier to take on a ten page short story than a 600+ page novel like "Ulysses" or "Finnegan's Wake"). For readers who are new to Joyce, this would be a good place to start.A final note: since this book is old enough to be considered a "classic," there are a plethora of editions available from various publishers. I own the Vintage edition (ISBN: 0679739904). Not only is it a quality printing (not that cheap newspaper ink that rubs off on your fingers), it also contains about a hundred pages of criticism at the end that help shed light on Joyce's often illusive themes. Normally I shun forewards and afterwards (I like to think I've read enough to discover a story's theme on my own), but in the case of Joyce I found that a push in right direction can mean the difference between enjoyment and frustration.

He had also rejected Catholicism, and yet all his characters are dominated by it. DUBLINERS, Joyce's collection of short stories which set the standard for the genre, is filled with characters who come to terrible revelations (which he called "epiphanies") about how their lives had been scarred by the provincialism of Dublin, the divisiveness of its politics, and the oppression of religion. By extension, this is how Joyce percieved humanity at the dawn of modernism. The stories range from the psychologially simple ("Counterparts" and "A Little Cloud") to the extraordinarily complex ("A Painful Case" and "The Dead"). But what is common throughout is the feel for Dublin just after the turn of the last century. The readers see the cobblestones, the chimneys, the trams and carts, the churches, and the street lamps. More importantly, the readers feel the tensions underlying the public smiles and infrequent bursts of confidence that the characters exhibit. The pinnacle of this collection is "The Dead". A novella, actually, "The Dead" encompasses everything: politics, religion, art, journalism, history, love, and the inevitability of death rendering all worldly things meaningless. This doesn't mean the story is a downer: this death is necessary to making a fresh start. The ending of "The Dead" has been interpreted in hundreds of ways. However, there is no denying that as Joyce "pulls back the camera" from the Conroy's hotel room to the universe above, the writing swells to its most beautiful. To me, this is a movement toward the future, toward change, leaving the living dead behind to a more spiritual life on Earth.Rocco Dormarunno, author of The Five Points.

One of the most important things it teaches you, is not taking for granted what other books tells you. The reason behind this is one very plausible "there's no one size fits all". Reading this book you start to trust your guts not only the words from a productivity expert. These hacks are thought to be tested, and then embraced or tossed depending if are suitable to your particular situation or not. Also the book shows that we can take some advises from it and from others creating our very own system. It's good to know GTD or Pomodoro technique, but is better implement from those what works best in each person's case. I'll take from this book, what suits me.
