In Greek mythology, the Golden Fleece is the fleece of the gold-haired winged ram, which can be procured in Colchis. It figures in the tale of Jason and his band of Argonauts, who set out on a quest by order of King Pelias for the fleece in order to place Jason rightfully on the throne of Iolcus in Thessaly. The story is of great antiquity - it was current in the time of Homer.

Review ''Colum's stirring telling of the Greek epics is still unequalled as an introduction to the classic myths for young readers.'' --Publishers Weekly '' (Audiobook narrator) Williams's voice is a fine match with the text, which is written in a style that is eloquent but that may seem archaic to the contemporary listener. His deep, resonant voice has something of the quality of an oracle. His delivery is subtly nuanced, and this work will be a real treat for the listener.'' --AudioFile ''Blackstone has produced the audiobook version of The Golden Fleece, perfect for those of us who would like to listen instead of read . . . The reader's voice is deep and serious, fitting for the nature of the story . . . The author's incredible use of language and these timeless tales will add much to our studies.'' --Old Schoolhouse Magazine
About the Author Padraic Colum (1881–1972) was an Irish poet, dramatist, novelist, and collector of folklore. He was a three-time Newbery Honor award winner.
From AudioFile Padriac Colum, a major leader of the Irish Renaissance and friend of both Joyce and Yeats, was a poet, playwright, and author in his own right. Well versed in the old Gaelic myths as well as those of other cultures, he wrote a number of books for children that retell these old tales. Using the story of Jason and the Argonauts as a vehicle, Colum employs the character of Orpheus, who is accompanying the Argonauts, to tell us the stories of Prometheus, Theseus, and Heracles, among others, as the adventurers journey past particular locales associated with their respective exploits. Williams's voice is a fine match with the text, which is written in a style that is eloquent but that may seem archaic to the contemporary listener. His deep, resonant voice has something of the quality of an oracle. His delivery is subtly nuanced, and this work will be a real treat for the listener who sticks with it. Clements When I allowed my 9 year old to buy this book, I knew he only wanted it because of the cool 3-headed tiger on the front. Much to my delight, a few hours later he announced to me that this was the coolest book that has ever been written. He spent an entire weekend reading!! This is a child that previously had to be forced to read. This is a great book for boys who have been unmotivated by the typical literature available. The plot is interesting and full of action. The material provides a nice introduction to ancient literature and mythology. It has also given us a good discussion point for history lessons.

Moore Padraic Colum's books on Greek mythology are generally categorized as children's books--but they're definitely not for children below the 10-12 year level, and as compact, well-written synopses, they can be read with great enjoyment by adults, too. Colum's work is distinguished by his writing; he was a poet and gifted teller of tales, and his manner of retelling these stories is both literate and readable. This, and his "Children's Homer" (which covers both the Iliad and Odyssey) are a wonderful way of getting acquainted, or reacquainted, with the Greek myths, and like Andrew Lang's quite similar retellings, are a wonderful substitute if you don't want to venture into the full Homeric tales (or ferret out all of the disconnected myths).

A true "theater of the mind" experience By Midwest Book Review The Golden Fleece by Padriac Column (1881-1972) is a complete and unabridged (10 hours, 8 compact discs) audiobook based on the classic Greek legend of Jason, the Argonauts, and their quest for the fabled Golden Fleece. A dramatic and spirited saga of an immortal legend, chronicling the exploits and soul-searing conflicts of mortals, monsters, and the gods themselves. Fred Williams's superb narrative skills brings Padriac Column's epic tale to live in a true "theater of the mind" experience while the compact disc format features tracks every 3 minutes for bookmarking. The Golden Fleece would make a perfect addition to any personal or community library audiobook collection.
