As life nears its end with me, I find myself meditating more and more upon the mystery of its nature and origin, yet without the least hope that I can find out the ways of the Eternal in this or in any other world. In these studies I fancy I am about as far from mastering the mystery as the ant which I saw this morning industriously exploring a small section of the garden walk is from getting a clear idea of the geography of the North American Continent. But the ant was occupied and was apparently happy, and she must have learned something about a small fraction of that part of the earth's surface.

The Breath of Life, by John Burroughs

From the Author "As life nears its end with me, I find myself meditating more and more upon the mystery of its nature and origin, yet without the least hope that I can find out the ways of the Eternal in this or in any other world. In these studies I fancy I am about as far from mastering the mystery as the ant which I saw this morning industriously exploring a small section of the garden walk is from getting a clear idea of the geography of the North American Continent. But the ant was occupied and was apparently happy, and she must have learned something about a small fraction of that part of the earth's surface.'' ''My imagination and ingrained humanism are appealed to by the facts and methods of natural history. I find something akin to poetry and religion (using the latter word in its non-mythological sense, as indicating the sum of mystery and reverence we feel in the presence of the great facts of life an death) in the shows of day and night, and in my excursions to fields and woods. The love of nature is a different thing from the love of science, though the two may go together. To the rigid man of science this is frank mysticism; but without a sense of the unknown and unknowable, life is flat and barren. Without the emotion of the beautiful, the sublime, the mysterious, there is no art, no religion, and no literature. How to get from the clod underfoot to the brain and consciousness of man without invoking something outside of, and superior to, natural laws, is the question. For my own part I content myself with the thought of some unknown and doubtless unknowable tendency or power in the elements themselves - a kind of universal mind pervading living matter and the reason of its living, through which the whole drama of evolution is brought about."

John Burroughs

About the Author JOHN BURROUGHS, USAF, Ret., served twenty-seven years in active and reserve duty in the US Air Force. He is the co-author of" Encounter in Rendlesham Forest." He is currently a lecturer and presenter on the Rendlesham Forest Incident and other related events.

Though I'm not sure I agree with all of his thoughts. However, if we had to agree with everything we read, we would probably never learn anything new or never read anything.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Burroughs - man of letters and naturalist By A Customer John Burroughs was a respected man of letters and a dedicated naturalist. This is one of Burroughs's last statements of his naturalist philosophy.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Breath of Life By Joe McMahon I am a great devotee of John Burroughs, one of the early naturalist writers. Most of his book concern his observations as he traveled around New England. Things were very different in the late nineteenth century. This book is very different. In this he attempts to.explain the difference between the living and non-living. ( not living and dead). It is not easy to read and understand on the first reading. Some of his ideas look a little strange after over 100 years, but are very worth reading and digesting.them.

If we try to look back at history nine hundred years, we shall see a world very unlike that in which we are now moving. Midway from the birth of our Lord to the present era, the great struggle between the new and old had not subsided, and the great European world of civilized nations had not yet settled into their homes and characters.

She had nearly finished all the other ones I had given her so the timing was great as well. She uses these if she has to wait for an appointment such as the doctor, DDS, etc.She flipped though this and gave it quick rating of 8.5 to 9.0 out of 10. I highly recommend this for anyone to carry with them to help pass the time or keep their mind occupied if you have nothing to do for a few minutes!

Before I begin to tell you some of the things I have seen and heard, in both of which I have had to take a share, now from the compulsion of my office, now from the leading of my own heart, and now from that destiny which, including both, so often throws the man who supposed himself a mere on-looker, into the very vortex of events—that destiny which took form to the old pagans as a gray mist high beyond the heads of their gods, but to us is known as an infinite love, revealed in the mystery of man—I say before I begin, it is fitting that, in the absence of a common friend to do that office for me, I should introduce myself to your acquaintance, and I hope coming friendship. Nor can there be any impropriety in my telling you about myself, seeing I remain concealed behind my own words.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Shirley By Shirley Having spent 38 years with my husband in the pastorate, I found the book to be relevant, reverent, and realistic. Our internal struggles of growth plus the stress of dealing with others' difficult problems caused us to lean on the Lord continually for guidance and wisdom. The author, a former Pastor, portrays all of this in a slower-paced novel set in the 1800s. His ability to apply spiritual understandings to everyday people/problems is unsurpassed. I admire MacDonald's writings, and would go so far to say he's my favorite author.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Pastoral fiction -- an old masterpiece By R. W. Schwerdt I'd gladly recommend this novel to anyone in pastoral ministry, involved in the "cure of souls." It relates the ministry of a pastor new to his parish and the relationships that he encounters in the course of his service to the community, as well as his own interior wrestling over personal matters. It's slow paced (as befits a story written in the late 1800s), but wonderful. It's hard to tell how much might be autobiographical from George MacDonald's own life, but clearly his interest in ministering to the hearts and souls of people comes through.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful book By J. Colvin I love George MacDonald's writings. They require slower reading, come from a time when people had the time to meditate on higher values and the importance of leaving a true life. Mr. McDonald shows how a true life in the spirit is woven into our life through the simple events of every day life.

By Amazon Customer This book is a great source for lean leaders. It guides you step by step through problems solving & leadership development.I found most useful chapters are 2, 4, 5, and 7.Chapter 2 provide a step by step and in details how to solve problems and follow the Toyota Business Practice for problems solving. Jeff also explained greatly the A3 approach and the Kata method.Chapter 3 is about visualization and work standard. How to implement, and the culture.Chapter 4 will guide you step by step in how to develop your self to grow as a leader. This include the learning cycles, the Toyota approach of developing leaders at the gmeba, the Toyota method of hiring people, motivating people and respecting people.Chapter 5 is very great! It guides you on how to become a teacher and start coaching others. This chapter will teach you the psychology of being a mentor, teacher and coach. The chapter also present the coaching kata by Mike Rother and simplify the technique in an easy manner.Chapter 6 is about supporting the daily kaizen. The three chapters 4,5,6 are replicated from the Toyota Way to Lean Leadership with some nice adds and insights.Chapter 7 is about the remarkable approach Hoshin Kanri. This chapter will teach you how to align goals vertically and horizontally across different functional departments in your organization. The chapter also discuss Dana turnaround (discussed at the end of the Toyota Way to Lean Leadership). The book still not a conclusion of the Toyota series books by Jeff. I still recommend to read the Toyota suite (7 books). And this book describes the practical side of the lean tools and dig deep into the lean culture.Very good Jeff. Nicely done!

By John Price Hi John,s.Hi George,I have started reading my freshly arrived copy of your book written withJeff Liker. I am only through to chapter 3 but this is a fantasticresource. I have been a frustrated lean six sigma black belt for 4 yearstrying to have my company concentrate on visual management andstandardised work to stabilise processes BEFORE trying to make majorbreakthrough projects that become unsustained. Most organisationsobviously have to learn the hard way I guess. I am leaving my employer tojoin another organisation that is developing a solid management operatingsystem, building a foundation to implement the TPS approach to CI. Thisbook will help me greatly on this new journey.Thank you so much for providing this resource.RegardsJohn PriceSent from my iPad

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. bad English By amajut The grammar in this book is so bad, I cannot believe it was published!! The intentions in this book is good but the delivery is so bad I regretted even reading the first two chapters. It is hard to believe that Jeffrey Likers name is associated with the way this book was written. If this book was edited and grammar checked it would have been a decent book to read.Don't waste your money.

THE human being who thrills to the experience of beauty in nature and in art does not forever rest with that experience unquestioned. The day comes when he yearns to pierce the secret of his emotion, to discover what it is, and why, that has so stung him—to defend and to justify his transport to himself and to others. He seeks a reason for the faith that is in him. And so have arisen the speculative theories of the nature of beauty, on the one hand, and the studies of concrete beauty and our feelings about it, on the other.

Do not buy this book, even if it is free By Cathy I knew this book was quite old, but I did not expect it to be so derogatory and demeaning of the people described as not meeting the authors beauty standards. I did not see any psychology in the book at all. Do not waste your time on this one. I tried to delete it from my Kindle libray but have not been able to do it. I wish I could.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Nice fast adventure. Important perspective. Poor Kindle implementation By James D. Kleiser Hey, sure, the plot is simple (buncha tourists go to remote site, get kidnapped by radicals, some get killed, finally, well... don't want to spoil it....) Perhaps Conan Doyle has better work. But this is interesting for its content - the story could have taken place today. It's a great read because the reader will recognize that the Mideast hasn't really changed, that there's a timelessness, not just to the area, but to activities there. Different groups - the Assassins, the Dervishes, a Quaida, etc, have come and gone, but to what we currently call Radical Islam continues. Great read, partly for the characters, partly for the adventure, partly for the perspective.==========While the Kindle edition advertises "live Table of Contents", it lacks live chapter heading links. You cannot use the Kindle 5-way control to jump among chapter headings. There's no excuse for this laziness in preparation. Lousy Kindle implementation.

Chesterton is well known as a novelist, essayist, storyteller, poet, philosopher, theologian, historian, artist, and critic. He's less well-known as a journalist these days, yet all evidence indicates that he viewed his work for the various newspapers as his primary raison-de-etre. Therefore anyone interested in exploring the works of this colossal genius should include a sampling of his newspaper columns along with all of his other brilliant books."All Things Considered" brings together about thirty columns that Chesterton wrote for the London Daily News in the years before World War I. There's no theme here; as the title suggests, this is a hodgepodge that wanders over everything imaginable. The only unifying thread is high quality.Chesterton writes about politics. In an essay on canvassing, he ponders some unusual double standards. We mere mortals cannot even offer our fellow citizens food for their vote. Politicians, on the other hand, can allow bribes to run into the stratosphere. We also can't threaten each other. The MPs, however, can threaten the downfall of civilization. Lukring behind this apparent hypocricy is the apparent lunacy of expecting the power-hungry to be the most moral voluntarily, even as the crack down on the rest of us.Chesterton writes about daily annoyances. While on vacation, he learns that his beloved home at Battersea has been flooded. Far from despairing, he sees it as a chance to look at that home in a new light. Could it be that our daily lives have grown so boring and monotonous that we barely see the things around us at all? Maybe a forced change of scenery is the only thing that can make us look at daily life anew.Chesterton writes about literature. He ponders a copy of The Eatansville Gazette, a newspaper that's supposed to exist only within the fictional world of Dickens' "Pickwick Papers". Moreover, the imaginary rag was a vile and repulsive publication; why would anyone want to drag it into reality? It seems that two distinct towns are vying to be recognized as the model for Eatansville. In doing so, Chesterton notes, they are trivializing the meaning of the book. There's lots more considered in "All Things Considered". But while every essay here is amusing and almost everyone is a masterpiece, the selections in this book are by no means higher quality that average for Chesterton's career. Pondering that fact, you may well decide that you have to track down all 4,000 of Chesterton's newspaper columns the minute you finish this little selection.

By Christine Richardson I bought this with out looking at the reviews (generally they liked the book and did not like the edition), anyway, I wanted to report back that somehow this has been fixed, as this edition is perfect in every way! Fell good to get it, and read GK's views on everything, as he considers 'all things'. Ok, I'm not witty, but I know a good book when I read it! This is it!

29 of 32 people found the following review helpful. Chesterton was a genius, but do NOT buy this edition By A Seeker If a publisher is going to reprint a work in the public domain, that publisher can at least go to the trouble of typsetting the book in a readable font, with a readable line width. This edition is simply unreadable, and I am returning it forthwith. The 5-stars is for anyone unfamiliar with these essays, which are exquisitely, vintage Chesterton at his best.

The two boats fastened to the little pier that jutted out from the garden lay rocking in its shadow. Here and there lighted windows showed through the thick mist on the margins of the lake. The Enghien Casino opposite blazed with light, though it was late in the season, the end of September. A few stars appeared through the clouds. A light breeze ruffled the surface of the water.

Zullo (zullo@mandic.com.br) It's really a pity (almost a shame) that Amazon.com doesen't have a complete list of Leblanc's work. Anyway, if you're intersted, in Brazil contact Editora Nova Fronteira. I really don't know if they are still publishing the books, but you should try. Leblanc's hero and at the same time, villain, is Arsène Lupin, a frenchman talented for arts, literature, wining young ladies' hearts, and, oddly, robbery. He is the portrait of the frenchman, hilarious, independent, clever, and human. Leblanc hit the bull's eye creating this kind of character to go against the other mistery characters of his time, like Agatha Christie's Poirot, or Father Brown, or Inspetor Maigret and, most of all, the All-Time Brittanic Sherlock Holmes. As a matter of fact, there is a book called "Arsène Lupin meets Herlock Sholmes", figure out why! "Crystal Stopper" is one of the three Leblanc's books one must read, it's the first one. The other two are called "The hollow Needle" and "813". In these books, Lupin is involved with treasures, has to decipher complicated plots, has to save his life and lives of people he cares about. The most funny chapters are the ones he has to deal with the french police force. He even disguises himself as a well-known and respected inspector for years, and no one is able to discover him. If you're sick and tired of Miss Jane Marple and such characters, take your time and find Leblanc's books. Another good guess is "The teeth of the tiger", showing an older and tired, yet very alive, Arsène Lupin.Follow him and discover his secrets, his passions, and his treasures.

Lupin is put on the defensive from the opening and has to fight his way out of the hole in which he finds himself. I highly recommend the book and prefer it to other versions where Lupin basically plays the superman. This particular Kindle version, however, is problematic. It is missing entire paragraphs from the book. Specifically, any time the original book paraphrases a letter or newspaper article, this version simply omits it. So frequently you get texts like the following (directly quoted):Among the late news he found the following pargraphs:In between other newspapers and prospectuses lay a letter. Lupin jumped when he say it. It was addressed:"Oh," he gasped, "a letter from Gilbert!" It contained these few words:Once again, Lupin spent a night alternating between sleeplessness and nightmares. This is extremely frustrating and takes away a great deal from book. Again, I highly recommend the book but there must be a better e-version of the book than this one.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. the crystal stopper By katherine Kourti Besides this book I have also read :"IN PURSUIT OF ARSENE LUPIN" ,"ARSENE LUPIN vs HERLOCK SHOLMES","EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES OF ARSENE LUPIN" in the early '90's translated into greek. I was totally taken by the portrail of the character and by how well-written the book was!!! I've managed to convince my husband to read :"The Extraordinary Adventures... " (the only title we could get from the library) and he absolutely loved it!We have decided to buy all the titles we could find because they are worth having. All lovers of SHERLOCK HOLMES should give Arsene Lupin a try!

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them. There are actual breaks in the narrative between the first three parts, but Part Three's narrative continues into Part Four without an authorial break (only an editorial one).

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, by Benjamin Franklin

Review "The introduction is full of valuable and necessary historical and biographical information as well as good, sound interpretation."

From the Publisher Also available by Edmund S. Morgan: Benjamin Franklin

From the Inside Flap Famous as a scientist, statesman, philosopher, businessman, and civic leader, Benjamin Franklin was also one of the most powerful and controversial American writers of his time, and has been a subject of intense debate ever since: to Matthew Arnold, he exemplified "victorious good sense"; to D.H. Lawrence, he was "the first dummy American." Franklin's classic Autobiography is his last word on his greatest literary creation -- his own invented persona, the original incarnation of the American success story.

For the first time, the authoritative editions of works by major American novelists, poets, scholars, and essayists collected in the hardcover volumes of The Library of America are being published singly in a series of handsome and durable paperback books. A distinguished author has contributed an introduction for each volume, which also includes a detailed chronology of the author's life and career, an essay on the choice of the text, and notes.

The Original American Dream By TS It's a little presumptuous to write a "review" of a book as historically important as this, so I'll just give a few reasons why you should read it.It's well-written and engaging, even 200+ (nearing 300+; Franklin was born in 1706) years later. It stops in 1760, well before his involvement with the Revolution, but it covers in detail his youth, apprenticeships, the formation of his philosophy and ideals, and his path from poor roots to business and social success -- the first telling of the American Dream, the idea that a poor young man could Find His Fortune in the New World through enterprise, wisdom, and work. There is a high degree of self-hagiography here, and it would be amusing to tally up (for example) how many times Franklin praises himself vs. how many times he advises on the virtue of humility. He smooths over controversial topics like his illegitimate son, he doesn't mention his membership in the Freemasons, etc. The construction is also a bit rambling ("Then I did this thing. Next, I did another thing. Then I did a third thing"), but Franklin simply did so many interesting things -- even in this short slice of his life -- that the book is interesting despite that. There's a great deal of discussion on his scientific and inventive accomplishments, and he talks at length about his development of his own personal moral code and how he achieved business success (along with Franklin's Personal Method You Can Use for Self-Improvement -- in some ways, this is the first self-help book!)All in all, this is very much worth reading, and gives a compelling picture of Franklin's life and times. I particularly liked the picture Franklin draws of contemporary American society -- free, open, and small, with most people in most towns all knowing each other, and business opportunities are wide open for anyone with industry and pluck. I'm not sure how similar modern-day America still is to Franklin's Philadelphia, but it's certain that Franklin -- and this book -- helped set the image that we still *want* to believe America conforms to. And for that alone, it's worth reading. If you like this book, you might also be interested in reading Alexis de Tocqueville's _Democracy in America_, for another view of colonial-era America, or any of Mark Twain's nonfiction (_Life on the Mississippi_, _Roughing It_, etc.), for similar accounts of America's growth and development a hundred-odd years further on. Any of those should be available as a free Kindle download.

This "Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin" does not contain the type of finished material one has come to expect in a finished coherent autobiographical writing covering the whole life span of the individual written by single author over a continuous period of time. This is really source material partially written over distinctly separate periods of time wherein the author, Benjamin Franklin, wrote on two different continents without access to the other parts of his text. With that said, I still think that this book is a wonderful and enlightening piece of work. It should, in my opinion, be considered for placement in every high school and college library, and it should perhaps be wise to consider it for required reading in those institutions. The book tells of the life and times in which Mr. Franklin lived, the attitudes of the colonists and of the British and the ways that things were accomplished in colonial America. It is truly amazing to me to hear first hand how a single individual with only two years of formal education can educate himself as this man did and to rise to make such truly great contributions to society, science, engineering, and politics. I highly recommend this book.

An Unfinished Autobiography of the Consumate American Life By john purcell Franklin wrote this autobiography as a letter of instruction in the ways of the world to his youthful and illegitimate son of 40. It only covers the first half or so of his incredible life, so the things that really made him well-known are not covered, but there is plenty here anyway.Franklin recounts his family's modest life in England and the circumstances that brought them to Boston. He was among the youngest of a very large family, ultimately finding his way to Philadelphia to find work as a printer when an apprenticeship with an older brother turned sour.We always think of Franklin as being a slightly older statesman among the Founding Fathers, when in fact he was a full generation older than Washington or Jefferson. Unlike popular perception, he was an athletic and vibrant youth, who rescued a drowning Dutch companion and taught swimming to children of London's elite.Philadelphia in the 1720's and 1730's was a small town, never sure if it would really take off as a settlement. Franklin quickly befriended key politicians who felt Philadelphia had grown sufficiently to have a world-class print shop. He played a key role in the town's development, leading civic groups in establishing libraries, fire companies, meeting halls, and street cleaning services. Of course, he was also the consummate politician, serving in office, and networking his way to his first fortune by publishing government documents and printing the first paper currency. He also had a knack for working with the several important religious sects of that time and place, especially the pacifist Quakers, even though Franklin was a deist.Franklin was a clever businessman. In today's lexicon, he effectively franchised across the colonies his concept of the publisher/printer who would provide both the content and the ink on paper. By age 30, he had set up his business affairs so that his printing businesses in several colonies were operated by partners and he received a share of the profits, allowing him to pursue other interests. The autobiography is unfinished, so we don't hear his account of his pursuits of electricity, which made him as famous and well-known as Bill Gates is today, nor his thought on the Revolution. Franklin did play a key role in establishing logistical support to the British during their fight with the French in the New World. At that time and during his years in Europe, he was generally perceived as a Tory supporter.Read this book to learn how Franklin devoted himself to self-improvement by establishing clubs, lending libraries, a sober lifestyle allowing time for study, and his methods for measuring his personal performance against metrics he had established for a proper lifestyle. One will also gather a new appreciation for the fullness, utility, and richness of the English language when put on paper by a master.

The Little Book of Clarity helps you erase that conditioning and gain the peace of mind to live a life you love - permanently.

19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. You're better off reading Sydney Banks directly By Adult Reader in Calgary Jamie Smart is an adherent of the so-called "Three Principles". He is a good speaker and coach, and it took courage and integrity for him to drop NLP in favor of this new paradigm once he came to believe it was superior. The trouble with this book is that so much of it is just selling the benefits of "Clarity" (Smart's productized version of the Three Principles) rather than really providing text to show people the truth that our human experience is created in the mind. It's annoying that the three principles folks continually claim ownership of the observation that our experience of life is created in thought. Smart repeatedly states in Clarity that this understanding is new to humanity. Actually the notion is thousands of years old. It is core to Eastern spirituality and many branches of Western philosophy and science. See Emerson's essay "Idealism", which talks at length about the impossibility of knowing what is really "out there" since we can only be aware of our mind. Even Emerson way back in the 1800s was referring to ancient philosophical traditions. Or consider this very typical Buddhist commentary:"Visual forms, sounds, scents, tastes, and sensations—their essence is naturally empty. Where do they occur? They occur in our mind. They appear in the nature of the mind. They seem to be external, but they cannot actually be established outside the mind in any way. There is no other thing that we can point to that does not appear to the mind. For that reason, appearances are mind."(That commentary by the way is based on a text written in c. 1117)So while I agree this notion isn't common knowledge among the public it is NOT new. Even among people who "know" it, it is a hard realization to hold onto day to day.Smart's book is not the best place to go if you want to free yourself from thought. Sydney Banks' original material is much better - particularly his recorded lectures and "The Missing Link". Elsie Spittle's work is excellent though both have a new agey feel that may put people off. Smart's book does have the advantage that it avoids this. Also of course Buddhism has been all over this for thousands of years so the many Western interpreters of this ancient wisdom would be a good start. All of the Three Principles adherents whose books I have read share a belief that theirs is the One True Path and that everything else is BS. Smart implies as much in this book, obliquely comparing NLP, cognitive behavioral therapy, positive thinking, and even mindfulness meditation and Yoga to alcoholism. This POV gives 3Pers a "culty" feel that sets of alarm bells in me. For what it's worth and I know this is outside the scope of a book review but don't let yourself get pulled into their fundamentalist worldview. Keep yourself open. You may get something out of Jamie Smart's book. The Three Principles movement has packaged ancient wisdom into a very simple and coherent set of concepts (they would deny they are "concepts"). But, I think there are better places to get the same thing.

When I first discovered the 3 Principles two years ago (spurred by the very sexy title "Do Nothing" by Damian Mark Smyth), I started buying every book I could find on the topic and quickly found Jamie's first book "Clarity." I like Jamie's voice and found the book intriguing, but felt it starting to ramble and gave up on it twice before I finally finished it. Still, I liked the book and would have given it a 4 out of 5.This "Little" book hits all the right buttons for me, flows well and reads quickly (which for me means I will re-read it). I also especially like the 3rd part of the book. I will happily recommend and even give this book to friends and clients.

The goal of the book is to help you create more relationships, meet personal goals, pinpoint negative goals, and train your brain to start prioritizing your day-to-day life more clearly. For your convenience, I had Jamie Smart on my podcast, The Entrepreneurs Library, to give a deep dive on The Little Book of Clarity. Christopher Marlowe (baptised 26 February 1564 – 30 May 1593) was an English playwright, poet and translator of the Elizabethan era. Marlowe was the foremost Elizabethan tragedian of his day. He greatly influenced William Shakespeare, who was born in the same year as Marlowe and who rose to become the pre-eminent Elizabethan playwright after Marlowe's mysterious early death. Marlowe's plays are known for the use of blank verse and their overreaching protagonists.

Edward II, by Christopher Marlowe

Review "This is a first-rate edition of an increasingly important play. Mathew Martin's editing of the quarto text of Edward the Second is detailed and thoughtful, with copious, insightful annotations, and his critical introduction lucidly explores the play's theatrical contexts, historiographical concerns, and thematic imperatives. The extensive appendices that conclude the volume are invaluable for understanding the larger historical, political, and sexual contexts of the work. All in all, this is an edition that will greatly benefit both the student reader and the experienced scholar." (Ian Munro )"Mathew Martin's new edition of Edward the Second will serve well the needs of students. The introduction contains a succinct and helpful summary of the pertinent aspects of Marlowe's life and of the practical concerns of the Elizabethan stage, details the reign of the historical Edward II, and considers early modern and postmodern evaluations of "sodomitical" relationships. Appendices offer important cultural contexts, including passages from Marlowe's historical sources in Holinshed and Stow, Michael Drayton's very different poetic account of Edward's reign, a selection of early modern versions of the tradition of amity (or friendship between men), and Renaissance legal and moral descriptions of sodomy." (Ian McAdam ) --Ian McAdam

From the Back Cover

Depicting with shocking openness the sexual and political violence of its central characters’ fates, Edward the Second broke new dramatic ground in English theatre. The play charts the tragic rise and fall of the medieval English monarch Edward the Second, his favourite Piers Gaveston, and their ambitious opponents Queen Isabella and Mortimer Jr., and is an important cultural, as well as dramatic, document of the early modern period.

This modernized and fully annotated Broadview Edition is prefaced by a critical but student-oriented introduction and followed by ample appendix material, including extended selections from Marlowe’s historical sources, texts bearing on the play’s complex sexual and political dynamics, and excerpts from contemporary poet Michael Drayton’s epic rendition of Edward the Second’s reign.

To be sure, the dramatic events in this play really did happen, but Marlowe shows himself at his best when he paints the picture. At first, Marlowe masterfully allows us to detest Edward for undoing all the fine work of his father Edward Longshanks. We also are able to feel sorry for Mortimer and Isabella. (the eventual villains). Isabella feels neglected and Mortimer can not stand to see the fine work of Edward Longshanks undone. Later, we come to have some respect for Edward II when he shows himself to have some of his father's fine qualities and he crushes the first rebellion against him with courage and intelligence. When the second uprising successful, we no longer are lead into any feelings of admiration for Mortimer and Isabella. Once they have power they are more vile and disgusting than Edward II ever was. By Act 5.1, Marlowe gives Edward II moving soliloquies and does not allow our new won pity to slack for a moment. The final scene of this play when Edward II's 17 year old son Edward III flips the tables, crushes his corrupt mother, has Mortimer put to death, and offers prayers to his murdered father is a scene that is almost unsurpassed in literature. To be sure, this did actually happen, but Marlowe not only tells us what happened, but colors it with his superb mastery of the language.

By A Customer Edward the second, or to give it its full title, 'The troublesome reign and Lamentable death of Edward, the second king of England, with the tragical fall of proud Mortimer', is famous for being an Elizabethan 'Gay play', but this is only one of the subjects contained within the play. Politics, cruelty and the Feudal System are all important themes in this, one of the great masterstrokes of Elizabethan literature. The play itself is a history play, set in the 14th century featuring Edward and his previously basished lover, Gaveston, who returns after the death of Edward's father. This return enrages the barons, who were sworn to Edward's father that Gaveston would never return. This is the catalyst for a plot that races around like a cheetah on speed, culminating in one of the most excruciating deaths ever portrayed on stage. "Shakespeare? Who? Marlowe was far better!"

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Interesting Part of the Brecht Canon By R. Albin This play is Brecht's adaptation of Marlowe's Edward II. I suspect this play will be surprising to most readers of Brecht because it contains considerably less of the overt social satire and commentary associated usually with Brecht. More than anything else, this play is a character of study of Edward's refusal to heed social conventions. This play is surprisingly successful, at least when read. Brecht elevates Edward's wilfullness into a virtue and makes him a surprisingly sympathetic character. The play displays Brecht's wit and stagecraft quite well.
