The room was the typical bedroom of the typical boarding-house, furnished, insofar as it could be said to be furnished at all, with a severe simplicity. It contained two beds, a pine chest of drawers, a strip of faded carpet, and a wash basin. But there was that on the floor which set this room apart from a thousand rooms of the same kind. Flat on his back, with his hands tightly clenched and one leg twisted oddly under him and with his teeth gleaming through his grey beard in a horrible grin, Captain John Gunner stared up at the ceiling with eyes that saw nothing.

Death at the Excelsior, and Other Stories, by P. G. Wodehouse

About the Author Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (15 October 1881 – 14 February 1975) was an English humorist, whose body of work includes novels, short stories, plays, poems, song lyrics, and numerous pieces of journalism. He enjoyed enormous popular success during a career that lasted more than seventy years and his many writings continue to be widely read. Despite the political and social upheavals that occurred during his life, much of which was spent in France and the United States, Wodehouse's main canvas remained that of a pre- and post-World War I English upper-class society, reflecting his birth, education and youthful writing career.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Several good Wodehouse short tales By Charles Montgomery The title story occupiies 17 of the 88 pages of the book. It is a reasonably entertaining locked room murder mystery. The others are vintage Wodehouse stories with butlers and humor. The fun reading is well worth the typo errors that most of these free runs of older books for the Kindle have.As one reviewer has said, paraphrased, "An average Wodehouse is better than a lot of best works of a lot of other writers."For free, why complain?

By BLT Not his usual batch of delightful silliness that makes life so much more fun, but still amusing and done in Wodehouse style. Can a Wodehouse book be bad? The only story I've read so far that I didn't care for was "The Head of Kay's" and that was because it was so involved in Cricket and Rugby that I didn't understand a word he was saying 90% of the time. My advice is: "Read all the P. G. Wodehouse you can get your hands on!"

Wodehouse the master of the written word By robert louis Perhaps the funniest writer in English of the 20th century, Wodehouse can't seem to write a dull sentence. His command of the language reminds us of Anthony Powell, and his gift for poking fun at the upper classes reminds us of that time when some, and only a few, people had a very good time in life. I always think of the Wodehouse stories, no matter when they were set, as having occurred in the summer of 1913, the last before the Great War.
