Above all don’t use the word good as though it meant something in evolutionary science. The Hard Problem is a tour de force, exploring fundamental questions of how we experience the world, as well as telling the moving story of a young woman whose struggle for understanding her own life and the lives of others leads her to question the deeply held beliefs of those around her.Hilary, a young psychology researcher at the Krohl Institute for Brain Science, is nursing a private sorrow and a troubling question. She and other researchers at the institute are grappling with what science calls the “hard problem”—if there is nothing but matter, what is consciousness? What Hilary discovers puts her fundamentally at odds with her colleagues, who include her first mentor and one-time lover, Spike; her boss, Leo; and the billionaire founder of the institute, Jerry. Hilary needs a miracle, and she is prepared to pray for one.

The Hard Problem: A Play, by Tom Stoppard

Review Praise for The Hard Problem:“Mr. Stoppard is, as always, an adept craftsman. . . . [He] has provided food for thought, and not just a tasting menu but a full, footnoted banquet.”—Ben Brantley, New York Times“Tom Stoppard [is] the English-speaking world’s brainiest playwright.”—Wall Street Journal“Oozes learning. . . . [Stoppard] proves that it is possible to construct a tight 100 minutes of drama around neuroscientific conceits. . . . He has succeeded . . . this is a play to admire.”—Economist“[The Hard Problem] displays intact the dramatist’s remarkable ability to synthesize complex knowledge into wittily metaphorical dialogue. . . . Demand for this brainy, funny, and touching play will long outstrip supply.”—New Statesman“Tom Stoppard’s first play for nine years is typically witty—an intellectually charged piece that delights in the slippery nature of language and pulses with interesting ideas.”—London Evening Standard“100 minutes of condensed brain-ache, marbled by wit and some camisoled sexiness. . . . Admirably high-minded . . . It succeeds, in my view triumphantly.”—Daily Mail“Stimulating . . . absorbing . . . A rich, ideas-packed work that . . . offers endless stimulation and represents, like so much of [Stoppard’s] work, a search for absolute values and a belief in the possibility of selfless virtue.”—Guardian“The dialogue is flashily impressive . . . it leaves one panting with admiration.”—Spectator (UK)

Schwartz A new play by Tom Stoppard is always an event of some significance, particularly since he has not produced a play in nine years. The hard problem of the play’s title is consciousness. The process is so unique and so vastly complex as to be presently inexplicable (though some have made attempts to do so). In terms of Stoppard’s play, the question of consciousness leads the protagonist (a young woman named Hilary) to approach a host of other, often related issues: sociobiology, evolutionary psychology, egoism/altruism, nature/nurture and, in particular, the viability of materialist views of both cognition and all things in general.Hilary is also a person of faith. She prays to God, asking for help in protecting and nurturing a daughter that she gave up for adoption when Hilary was 15. As fortune would have it, her employer adopted a daughter at the time when Hilary gave her’s up for adoption; they share the same name.Hilary works for a well-funded psychological research institution funded by a mega-wealthy financial manager (the adoptive parent), played in the first London stage version by Anthony Calf (for American audiences—the actor who played Colonel Fitzwilliam in the BBC Pride and Prejudice).Hilary discusses her issues with a sometime lover who is a practicing skeptic, an Indian financial manager and other workmates and friends, one of whom she takes the fall for when the friend manipulates research results (thus exemplifying the terms of the egoism/altruism issue). This all takes place in a single act with ten scenes, approximately ninety minutes in length.London theatre critics have said that several of the characters remain two-dimensional, functioning as exemplars for the positions that they take. This is fair criticism, I think. I believe that the play would have benefited from a two-act structure and, say, an additional thirty minutes of material. The subject(s) which it essays are very, very important and very, very complex. If I compare it with one of his masterpieces—Arcadia--I would say that The Hard Problem’s characters lack some of the humor and full humanity of that play’s characters and the dynamism of its action, scene changes, time differentials, and so on. Arcadia is a much richer play.Nevertheless, The Hard Problem has wonderful moments and a fine central character. I have not yet been able to see it on stage. My initial impression is that this is a second-tier work by our greatest living dramatist, and, hence, one that requires our attention.

The National Theatre production was brilliant, and the poetry of the language came soaring through what is a very intimate play about a very large subject. I love it when Stoppard, or any playwright, for that matter, successfully embeds large themes in the lives of ordinary people, and rarely is it as well-done as it is here. Reading the script again, after seeing the production, was very special. I could relive moments that I knew had been exquisite, and dwell over the lovely dialogue. As with any play, it's designed to be seen, and secondarily read as literature, but if you have a chance to read it and not see it, and you're interested in meaningful, contemporary theater, at least read it.

George I bought it because having seen it in London I had to read it, (which is really, seeing it twice) to understand it. And furthermore, knowing that Stoppard is taking formal positions on moral philosophy through his characters, the reader needs to acquaint with with specific philosophical references. i didn't feel I understood the play having merely seeing. For me, it was a, challenging philosophical Hard Problem. The difference for example, seeing American Buffalo and the Hard Problem is that Mamets play is understood in the emotional impact ofconflict onstage. Stoppard lingers on intellectually because the formal implications of philosophy make the characters opaque and dense, not emotionally available but full of contradiction and complexity. Mamet provides a violent answer, he is an American, whereas Stoppard raises questions that endear you to the characters moral quandary, and their lived experience which remains transparent individually and collectivelyremains an argument without moral resolution. There is the difference. I prefer to re-interpret meaning rather than being given a pat answer.

Joseph Trapp was Professor of Poetry at Oxford (which meant, at the time, Latin and Greek). There is not enough of his blank verse translation of the Aeneid to judge his verse. His prose, however, is very good:... By more Incidents then I do not mean (as I said) more Men killed, more Battles fought, more Speeches spoke; but more memorable and surprizing Events. Take these Poems therefore purely as Romances; and consider them only with regard to the History, and Facts contained in them, the Plots, the Actions, Turns, and Events; That of Virgil is more copious, full, various, and surprizing, and every way more entertaining, than Those of Homer. Then is there any Comparison between the Subjects of the Poems? Between the Anger of Achilles, (if That be the Subject of the Iliad) and the Return of Ulysses in Those of the Greek Poet; and the Founding of Rome, and the Glory of the Romans in That of the Latin one?Besides weighing in heavily pro-Virgil, in the epic "Homer v. Virgil" rap battle, Trapp makes some very astute remarks on what a translator should attempt to do. This paragraph on blank verse should be borne in mind by anyone who ever wrote it:But we are told that Blank Verse is not enough distinguished from Prose. The Answer must be, It is according as it is. That of our English Tragedies, I confess, is not; tho' very proper for the Purpose to which it is apply'd. This indeed is what the French rightly call Prose mesurée, rather than Verse. But much worse is to be said of any Poem, which is only written in the Shape of Metre, but has no more of Verse in it, than of Rhime; no Harmony, or Prosody, no true Metrical Cadence; half the Lines concluding with double Syllables, as Torment, Greatness, and the Participles ending in ing. This deserves not so much as the Name of Prose on Horseback; 'Tis Prose upon Crutches; and of all Prose the vilest. But if Blank Verse be laboured, as it ought to be; it is sufficiently distinguished from Prose.

THE doctors could do no more for the Dowager Lady Berrick. When the medical advisers of a lady who has reached seventy years of age recommend the mild climate of the South of France, they mean in plain language that they have arrived at the end of their resources. Her ladyship gave the mild climate a fair trial, and then decided (as she herself expressed it) to "die at home." Traveling slowly, she had reached Paris at the date when I last heard of her. It was then the beginning of November. A week later, I met with her nephew, Lewis Romayne, at the club. "What brings you to London at this time of year?" I asked.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Victorian Soap Opera By K. Wagner I read this book on my Kindle from the Wilkie Collins Collection. Its not one of his greatest but it is a fine book. A young man suffering from an emotional shock is being manipulated by 2 groups. The first group is made up of friends who want to see him married. The second group is headed by a Catholic priest who wants to see the young man converted and return the Abbey* property back to the Church. [*Lands which were taken from the Church by Henry the VIII in the 16th century and given to the young man's family.] The 2 groups working against each other make the book humorous in the beginning. It only turns tragic later on with a somewhat happy ending. It is one of Collin's shorter works and well worth reading. If this book was being written in modern times. A fictional cult would be created, but the Roman Catholic Church is useful for the plot because of its views on marriage and divorce.

20 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Victorian prejudice By Francine Smith This book contains tiresome characters in an anti-catholic setting. For a Wilkie Collins book, it is absolutely dreadful. Still, it is a Collins book, so at least it is well written. A man and woman marry. A Jesuit, out to get the man's property, breaks up the marriage and succeeds in making everyone miserable, including the reader. While I had heard of the prejudice against Jews and Catholics in Victorian England, it never hit home until I read this book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Read and awesome characters By Verena Techie This book did not get great reviews and compared to his other books it perhaps was not as suspenseful and a little sad but I loved the characters and the interplay between marriage or religion, who would win and how sometimes religion can take advantage of people who are down on their luck and needing something and so can women for that matter! I also loved the ending. I am loving everything that Wilkie Collins writes and I wish I could have met him. His books will deal with topics that were taboo in his day and that's fun. (Like pregnancy out of wedlock or the sad state of marriage and inheritance laws for women.)

The room was the typical bedroom of the typical boarding-house, furnished, insofar as it could be said to be furnished at all, with a severe simplicity. It contained two beds, a pine chest of drawers, a strip of faded carpet, and a wash basin. But there was that on the floor which set this room apart from a thousand rooms of the same kind. Flat on his back, with his hands tightly clenched and one leg twisted oddly under him and with his teeth gleaming through his grey beard in a horrible grin, Captain John Gunner stared up at the ceiling with eyes that saw nothing.

Death at the Excelsior, and Other Stories, by P. G. Wodehouse

About the Author Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (15 October 1881 – 14 February 1975) was an English humorist, whose body of work includes novels, short stories, plays, poems, song lyrics, and numerous pieces of journalism. He enjoyed enormous popular success during a career that lasted more than seventy years and his many writings continue to be widely read. Despite the political and social upheavals that occurred during his life, much of which was spent in France and the United States, Wodehouse's main canvas remained that of a pre- and post-World War I English upper-class society, reflecting his birth, education and youthful writing career.

It is a reasonably entertaining locked room murder mystery. The others are vintage Wodehouse stories with butlers and humor. The fun reading is well worth the typo errors that most of these free runs of older books for the Kindle have.As one reviewer has said, paraphrased, "An average Wodehouse is better than a lot of best works of a lot of other writers."For free, why complain?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Wodehouse Murder Mystery? By BLT Not his usual batch of delightful silliness that makes life so much more fun, but still amusing and done in Wodehouse style. Can a Wodehouse book be bad? The only story I've read so far that I didn't care for was "The Head of Kay's" and that was because it was so involved in Cricket and Rugby that I didn't understand a word he was saying 90% of the time. My advice is: "Read all the P. G. Wodehouse you can get your hands on!"

Wodehouse the master of the written word By robert louis Perhaps the funniest writer in English of the 20th century, Wodehouse can't seem to write a dull sentence. His command of the language reminds us of Anthony Powell, and his gift for poking fun at the upper classes reminds us of that time when some, and only a few, people had a very good time in life. I always think of the Wodehouse stories, no matter when they were set, as having occurred in the summer of 1913, the last before the Great War.

IN the month of August 1889, and in the middle of the seaside holiday, a message came to me from Wilkie Collins, then, though we hoped otherwise, on his death-bed. It was conveyed to me by Mr. A. P. Watt. He told me that his son had just come from Wilkie Collins: that they had been speaking of his novel, "Blind Love," then running in the Illustrated London News: that the novel was, unfortunately, unfinished: that he himself could not possibly finish it: and that he would be very glad, if I would finish it if I could find the time. And that if I could undertake this work he would send me his notes of the remainder. Wilkie Collins added these words: "If he has the time I think he will do it: we are both old hands at this work, and understand it, and he knows that I would do the same for him if he were in my place."

Review

“This edition of Collins’s Blind Love offers the best of modern scholarship―it is impossible to praise it too much. Professors Bachman and Cox add considerably to Broadview’s series of reasonably-priced fine scholarly editions.” ― A.D. Hutter, UCLA

From the Back Cover

Blind Love is Wilkie Collins’s final novel. Although he did not live to complete the work, he left detailed plans for the last third of this absorbingly plotted novel which were faithfully executed by his colleague, the popular author Walter Besant. The novel is set during the Irish Land War of the early 1880s and tells the story of Iris Henley, an independent young woman who marries the “wild” Lord Harry Norland, a member of an Irish secret society, and becomes unhappily drawn into a conspiracy plot.

The Broadview edition of Blind Love includes a critical introduction and primary source materials that address the novel’s focus on movements for Irish independence. Appendices include newspaper accounts of Ireland during the Land War and of the fraud case on which Collins based his story, articles reacting to Collins’s sudden death, Punch cartoons depicting the English attitudes toward the Irish, and contemporary reviews.

About the Author English novelist and playwright Wilkie Collins was a prolific writer with a body of work comprising thirty novels, over sixty short stories, more than a dozen plays, and a wide range of non-fiction pieces. Collins is best known for his novels The Woman in White, an early sensation novela genre combining shocking gothic horror with everyday domestic settingsand The Moonstone, which is credited as one of the first modern mystery novels. In the 1850s Collins met Charles Dickens and the two struck up a friendship, which lead to Collins becoming a frequent contributor to Dickens s journals Household Words and All the Year Round. Many of his stories have been adapted for film, including Basil, A Terribly Strange Bed, The Moonstone and The Woman in White. Collins died in 1889 at the age of 65.

Eyes blinded by love may open on delusion By Lady Marian This last of Wilkie Collins' novels is far more readable than one might suppose, given the relatively mediocre quality of his late work. Readers should be warned not to expect the same high level of intricate villainy, mystery, and subtle plotting that distinguished Collins' earlier, more famous books, and they will also have benignly to overlook some unnecessarily heavy-handed narrative intrusions from the author and his absurd harping on differences between the Celtic and Saxon temperaments (to the detriment of the former). But "Blind Love" is lively and full of incident, the heroine's predicament touches on serious moral issues, and the core events in the story are told with drama and zest. A young lady named Iris Henley defies friends and family to marry the ne'er-do-well scion of an Irish noble house, Lord Harry Norland, to whom she is irresistibly attracted (the "blind love" of the title). Charming, handsome, and reckless, Harry is not really a bad sort at heart, but he lacks the backbone to make something of himself, is prone to rash action and to running through money, and finds it far too easy to grasp at any expedient if his back is to the wall. When the married couple's financial resources start to grow slim in Paris, Harry lets himself be tempted to a series of criminal acts by his unscrupulous associate Dr. Vimpany, who has conceived a nefarious plan for filling their coffers once more. Out of loyalty to her husband, but ignorant of the true nature of his deeds, Iris yields to Harry's persuasion and becomes his reluctant accomplice in the final stage of Vimpany's plot, the commission of an insurance fraud. But remorse quickly burdens her tender conscience and the happiness of the marriage is irrevocably destroyed. To say more would be to spoil what small surprises lie in store for the reader. In "Blind Love" suspense arises not from the need to unavel what took place, and how, but from the interaction between the characters. The first third of the novel is marred by the almost comic implausibility of the scenes between Harry and Iris, who is vainly striving to resist her natural impulse to fling herself into his arms, whereas the conclusion is flawed by the summary, just-winding-up-the-plot retribution meted out to the evil-doers and Iris' foregone consignment to a staid new marriage with her formerly rejected suitor, the patient and unwavering Hugh Montjoy. But the central portion of this novel, where Collins probes the Norland menage and its tell-tale tensions, and then implacably details the criminal scheme, is as absorbing as any Collins admirer could desire.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A sensational finale By Patto Most dying writers leave behind a mere scrap of a posthumous novel to torment their devoted readers. Not Wilkie Collins. When he saw his bad health worsening, he wrote a detailed fifty-page synopsis of the remaining chapters of his novel in work. Walter Besant finished Blind Love for Collins at his request, following the outline minutely. Blind Love appeared in 1889, not long after the author's death.Collins wrote forty-eight chapters; Besant, sixteen. The transition, quite smooth, is clearly indicated in this Broadview edition. The psychology of the love interest is spot on. As we've all observed, good women often fall for no-good guys! Iris Henley, a well-bred young Englishwoman, marries ne'er-do-well Lord Harry despite all warnings. Her "wild Irishman" is irresistibly charming but morally lax. We watch Iris's principles suffer from association - to our escalating horror. Where will it all end?But the real heroine of the novel is Iris's maid, Fanny Mere, a fallen woman whom Iris hires despite her past. Fanny's gratitude turns into a obsession with protecting Iris from her enemies, husband foremost. Fanny is a wonderful character, weirdly pale and undemonstrative, an intense man-hatter and just the devious detective needed to save the day. There are other engaging characters too, and the plot is rich in crime and passion, not to mention Irish politics. The wild lord has ties to extremists in Ireland's independence movement. This is my third reading of Blind Love over the years and my best experience yet, thanks to the excellent introduction. The editors give us background on the English-Irish conflicts of the period. They describe the famous fraud of the 1880s that inspired the pivotal crime in Collins's plot. They follow the complex saga of the writing of Blind Love. And they discuss Collins's feminism, remarkable in his time, as revealed in his anti-traditional female characters.Blind Love is not The Woman in White, but why should it be? As the author's final novel, it exerts a unique fascination for a Collins fan like me. And it's a good solid example of the Victorian sensation novel, my particular literary weakness! I highly recommend the Broadview edition.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Only for diehard Wilkie Collins fans By Heather P. This book is definitely not another Woman in White or The Moonstone, both wonderfully well-written mysteries. For those who absolutely have to read every word that Collins wrote, this book is recommended. The plot is fairly boring and the characters fairly uninteresting. Overall, a slow and somewhat dull read.

“Patty, do come along and get your luncheon before everything grows cold!” “‘And the stars are old, And the leaves of the judgment book unfold,’” chanted Patty, who had just learned this new song, and was apt to sing it at unexpected moments. She sat on the floor in the middle of the long drawing-room of her New York home. To say she was surrounded by flowers, faintly expresses it. She was hemmed in, barricaded, nearly smothered in flowers.

Patty's Social Season, by Carolyn Wells

About the Author Carolyn Wells (1862-1942) was an American author and poet. She was born in Rahway, New Jersey. After finishing school she worked as a librarian for the Rahway Library Association. Her first book, At the Sign of the Sphinx (1896), was a collection of charades. Her next publications were The Jingle Book and The Story of Betty (1899), followed by a book of verse entitled Idle Idyls (1900). After 1900, Wells wrote numerous novels and collections of poetry. She wrote a total of more than 170 books. During the first ten years of her career, she concentrated on poetry, humor, and children's books. According to her autobiography, The Rest of My Life (1937), around 1910 she heard one of Anna Katherine Green's mystery novels being read aloud and was immediately captivated by the unraveling of the puzzle. From that point onward, she devoted herself to the mystery genre. Among her most famous works are: Patty at Home (1904), Marjorie's Busy Days (1906), The Gold Bag (1911), Marjorie's Maytime (1911), Marjorie at Seacote (1912), Patty Blossom (1917), Vicky Van (1918) and Patty and Azalea (1919).

Fun Book By Kim Written in the early part of the twentieth century, Patti's Social Season is about the day to day life of a well-to-do young lady as she makes her debut into society. She and her friends attend parties and events, but also find time to do good deeds. The book is not very realistic for today but it was an interesting and fun look back at another time for a certain segment of society. I will probably read other books in this series. Patti is harmless.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A little hard to stomach By Lyric G. Eads Personally, I don't have much patience with Patty. I suppose it is good escapist fiction, but reading about such a spoiled, rich little flirt gives the feeling of eating too much candied fruit. Bilious. There are much more satisfying reads out there. Give me Edna Ferber anyday!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Supernatural Threat? By Acute Observer The Hound of the Baskervilles“The Hound of the Baskervilles” is the best known of Doyle’s long stories. Like the others, it is entertaining and educational about the society of that era. Murders are caused by love and money (or lust and greed), to get it or to keep it. See your local newspapers.Dr. James Mortimer visits Sherlock Holmes over his concern for the new heir of the Baskerville estate. Sir Charles Baskerville recently died under strange conditions, and Sir Henry may also be threatened. Dr. Watson will accompany Sir Henry as a guard (his revolver is handy). Watson learns more about this neighborhood. Holmes arrives but lacks proof for the solution of the crime. Sir Henry will visit his neighbors at night and walk on the moors in the hours of darkness. Holmes, Lestrade, and Watson follow to rescue Sir Henry from a fiendish attack. Justice isn’t cheated, the villain disappears as if the earth swallowed him!It does not involve politics like the other long stories. Was it a critique of a hereditary aristocracy?

Dear Friends,—I am beginning a new book like an old sermon; but, as you know, I have been so accustomed to preach all my life, that whatever I say or write will more or less take the shape of a sermon; and if you had not by this time learned at least to bear with my oddities, you would not have wanted any more of my teaching. And, indeed, I did not think you would want any more. I thought I had bidden you farewell. But I am seated once again at my writing-table, to write for you—with a strange feeling, however, that I am in the heart of some curious, rather awful acoustic contrivance, by means of which the words which I have a habit of whispering over to myself as I write them, are heard aloud by multitudes of people whom I cannot see or hear. I will favour the fancy, that, by a sense of your presence, I may speak the more truly, as man to man.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. George MacDonald's masterful sermon series in story form By Dr. Leroy If you want to know what George MacDonald would have preached from the pulpit, just read this engaging story of a clergy family in 19th cent. England. The series of "family devotionals", the dialogue, as well as actual sermons preached by the fictional pastor show MacDonald's own theology, his obsessions, and his views on many subjects. The story is engaging, even if it is typical 19th cent. detailed and wordy description. A good read, plus it has a sequel: The Vicar's Daughter.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A REWARDING READ By James D. Thomson Circumstances to not have to dictate our mindset nor doom us to gloom. This novel does much to encourage one who is facing difficulties, showing how much we all have to share and how each of us is called and enabled to be faithful to our role in the Kingdom. For me, it is a matter of "read and learn".

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I love George MacDonald's novels generally, but not this one By Eileen George MacDonald has some wonderful novels and he has some wonderful books of sermons, but this novel, which he filled with sermons, felt forced and dry to me. Too little plot or character development and too much preaching. Don't give up on reading his books though, just leave this one to the end!

However, not included here are the collaborative bits (stories related by the castaways to ease their ordeal.) These were part of the original book, and were contributed by Wilkie Collins and other contemporaries of Charles Dickens. I was disappointed that these "stories within the story" were omitted.

Castrated and Sterilized Greek Myths By Amazon Customer This books contains several Greek hero tales, which have been rewritten for Christian children. While the original stories are pretty interesting of themselves, the prose herein is flowery enough that it goes right past pretty and into tedious and dull.Seriously. This book is so dull I tried to read it twice without even realizing it, and only made it about a third of the way each time. I hadn't realized it because there are actually TWO versions of this book available for free on the kindle! The second one is Heroes, or Greek Fairy Tales for My Children. Both versions have a heavily patronizing and overtly Christian introduction and a small handful of linked endnotes. Neither one has pictures. The differences are that this version has a chart-style clickable table of contents, and occasional illustration captions (sans illustration, of course). The contents are:PrefacePerseusHow Perseus and his mother came to SeriphosHow Perseus vowed a Rash VowHow Perseus slew the GorgonHow Perseus came to the ÆthiopsThe ArgonautsHow the Centaur trained the Heroes on PelionHow Jason lost his sandal in AnaurosHow they built the ship `Argo' in IolcosHow the Argonauts sailed to ColchisHow the Argonauts were driven into the Unknown SeaWhat was the end of the HeroesTheseusHow Theseus lifted the stoneHow Theseus slew the devourers of menHow Theseus slew the minotaurHow Theseus fell by his pride

So nice that these are being offered on Amazon. I can take it anywhere and have something for the kids that meets our standards and compliments their studies.

Mr. Twiss was a great walker, and it was his habit, after his day's work was done, to walk from his pleasant office in the Adelphi to his home at Hampstead. On an afternoon he was detained to a later hour than usual by one of his clients, a Captain Brayton, over some matter of a mortgage. Mr. Twiss looked at his office clock. "You are going west, I suppose?" he said. "I wonder if you would walk with me as far as Piccadilly? It will not be very much out of your way, and I have a reason for wishing your company." "By all means," replied Captain Brayton, and the two men set forth.
