Although events happen during periods of about 200 years ago, the human psychology and emotions are still valid, especially the inner sufferings of a woman from youth to the end of her life.Highly recommend to everyone - singles as well as married ones, women as well as men.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. enjoyable By Geegee If you ever saw the Shirley Temple movie "The Little Colonel", then you already know this character. This is a whole series of books through the girl, Lloyd's, childhood and teen years. Many characters such as friends, schoolmates, neighbors and family come and go through this series, and Lloyd always learns and grows from her experiences. Nicely written and fun to read! A nice series to give a young girl!

Dr. Corbett, Bishop of Oxford and Norwich, lamented long ago the departure of the English fairies. “In Queen Mary's time" he wrote— "When Tom came home from labour, Or Cis to milking rose, Then merrily, merrily went their tabor, And merrily went their toes." But now, in the times of James, they had all gone, for "they were of the old profession," and "their songs were Ave Maries." In Ireland they are still extant, giving gifts to the kindly, and plaguing the surly. "Have you ever seen a fairy or such like?" I asked an old man in County Sligo. "Amn't I annoyed with them," was the answer. "Do the fishermen along here know anything of the mermaids?" I asked a woman of a village in County Dublin. "Indeed, they don't like to see them at all," she answered, "for they always bring bad weather." "Here is a man who believes in ghosts," said a foreign sea-captain, pointing to a pilot of my acquaintance. "In every house over there," said the pilot, pointing to his native village of Rosses, "there are several." Certainly that now old and much respected dogmatist, the Spirit of the Age, has in no manner made his voice heard down there.

You have the feeling that this collection is a part of the deep well that Yeats' created his earlier 'Celtic Twilight' poetry from. These stories are faery tales, but there is an element of realism to them for, as you read, you doubt not the truth of the tales, and immediately want to escape to Ireland and dance on the hills with the fey folk. Read this in the winter by the fire with a copy of Yeats' early poetry and prepare for a twilight wandering amongst shadowy woods, quiet country roads and green green hills. This is one of those books which you hold up to your heart upon completion, and sigh deeply from the experience of reading it - more of a journey than the act of turning pages and interpreting words...

20 of 21 people found the following review helpful. A fascinating look at the tradition of folklore in Ireland. By Monika In this delightful volume, first published in 1892, William Butler Yeats has collected all manner of Irish folklore (mostly short stories, with a few poems) from a wide variety sources. He has divided the works into categories as follows: the "Trooping Fairies" (fairies, changelings, and the "merrow" or mermaids); the "Solitary Fairies" (the lepracaun, the pooka - an animal spirit, and the banshee); "Ghosts"; "Witches & Fairy Doctors"; "T'yeer-na-n-Oge" or "Tir-na-n-Og" (a legendary island said to appear and disappear); "Saints & Priests"; "The Devil"; "Giants"; and "Kings / Queens / Princesses / Earls / Robbers." Yeats introduces each section with background information on the creature the stories in that category will concern. He also includes numerous footnotes of interest, making this book a valuable resource for anyone seeking to learn about the tradition of Irish folklore. While I have given this anthology a five-star rating based on it's value as a source of information on Irish mythology, it would probably be worth only four stars for entertainment value alone. Some of the stories are very short and/or don't have much of a point, and are less interesting. These tend to serve more as testimony to the nature of a particular mythical being rather than being an actual story with a plot and message for the reader. Nevertheless, the book as a whole offers a very comprehensive look at just what defines Irish folk culture. The stories that do have a point sometimes take the form of "how things came to be this way" tales, or provide a moral lesson, etc. Many of the stories are rather dark, as that tends to be the nature of lore from this region, but there are also some lighthearted and cheerful pieces.Despite the book having been compiled more than one hundred years ago, most of the stories are quite easy to read. Yeats makes things even more simple for the reader by making footnotes where old Irish words or phrases are used, giving us their meaning. However, there are a few stories that have been left in a more archaic form, which is distracting and a bit harder to decipher. Take, for example, the following excerpt:". . . the minit he puts his knife into the fish, there was a murtherin' screech, that you'd the life id lave you if you hurd it, and away jumps the throut out av the fryin'-pan into the middle o' the flure; and an the spot where it fell, up riz a lovely lady - the beautifullest crathur that eyes ever seen, dressed in white, and a band o' goold in her hair, and a sthrame o' blood runnin' down her arm."One of the things I enjoy most about literature is finding connections with other works I've read, and "Irish Fairy & Folk Tales" does not disappoint in this regard. Many of the pieces are derivations of other, more common fairy tales. For instance, "Smallhead and the King's Sons" (Ghosts) incorporates some elements from both "Cinderella" and "Hansel and Gretel," while "The Giant's Stairs" (Giants) has some similarities to the story of "Jack and the Beanstalk." There are more connections like this. On the whole I found this book to be very enjoyable, and also a valuable read from a literary / academic standpoint. I'd certainly recommend it to anyone interesting in the history of Irish culture, the study of fairy tales and folklore, or both.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. An excellent collection By A Customer This is an excellent collection. All sorts of creatures and strange happenings are described, and a good number of the stories are told in the dialect of the person who the story was gotten from (Yeats & his friends traveled around Ireland collecting stories from the people they met - recording the oral traditions, if you will.)

One of the grand masters of Victorian literature, Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, in Landport, Portsea, England. He died in Kent on June 9, 1870. The second of eight children of a family continually plagued by debt, the young Dickens came to know not only hunger and privation, but also the horror of the infamous debtors' prison and the evils of child labor. A turn of fortune in the shape of a legacy brought release from the nightmare of prison and "slave" factories and afforded Dickens the opportunity of two years' formal schooling at Wellington House Academy. He worked as an attorney's clerk and newspaper reporter until his Sketches by Boz (1836) and The Pickwick Papers (1837) brought him the amazing and instant success that was to be his for the remainder of his life. In later years, the pressure of serial writing, editorial duties, lectures, and social commitments led to his separation from Catherine Hogarth after twenty-three years of marriage. It also hastened his death at the age of fifty-eight, when he was characteristically engaged in a multitude of work.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A lost classic By Stephen Balbach Dickens wrote 5 novella length Christmas Books, the most well known is the first `A Christmas Carol`. The third book, `The Cricket on the Hearth`, during the 19th century was as equally loved and popular as `A Christmas Carol`. Today it has largely been forgotten. What happened? The plot centers on a blind girl who is sadly heart broken when her plans for marriage are thwarted - this would have been a familiar and even desirable outcome for Victorian readers who believed disabilities were inherited and thus the disabled should be kept from marrying for the sake of any unfortunate offspring. Today this is obviously no longer correct and even seems heartlessly inexplicable to the modern reader - as a result the book has become something of a forgotten period piece. However it is still an excellent story and well worth reading for other reasons: the Dickens characters, the scenes, the feel good ending.Unlike most of Dickens novels, there have been only a few adaptions to screen and stage. The NBC radio play from 1945 is horrendously bad, the plot is mangled beyond recognition and at only 25 mins hardly captures anything of the original. There are two silent film versions, but as far as I can tell there are no modern film adaptations other than a 50-min 1967 cartoon version which has poor reviews and doesn't appear the follow the plot closely. There was a stage adaption called `Dot` (1857) that was very popular throughout the rest of the 19th century but it is also now obscure.`The Cricket` deserves more attention despite its failings, the theme of adultery is well done and surprisingly frank, I was really moved by Mr. Peerybingle's grief and his night in front of the fire with the pixies. The scenes in the toy shop are classic Dickens and the final party scene is emotionally uplifting. Until a serious video version is made, which corrects the handicap aspect, it will unfortunately languish in obscurity, read mostly by Dickens fans. The Kindle edition is fine, I recommend checking out the Wikipedia page which links to a picture gallery and first edition scans to see it in its original presentation of fonts and drawings.

The writing can be difficult to understand at times, but that was the language of the day. People had a misunderstanding and doubt with others that we still have today. I enjoyed the positive, cheerful ending.

Toth Jules Verne traveled around Europe -sometimes in his own boats, Saint Michel I, II, and III - visited countries where the French rarely went at that time. He put lots of local color in these novels. The human story is always important: today's reader will enjoy the historical setting and these local situations. "Un billet de lottery" is not a science fiction book, there is some adventure featured, and a predictable outcome. Not one of the major works of Jules Verne, but very readable; a good story for mainly younger readers.

A man under thirty needs neighbors and to stop up the current of his life with a long silence is like obstructing a river—eventually the water either sweeps away the dam or rises over it, and the stronger the dam the more destructive is that final rush to freedom. Vic Gregg was on the danger side of thirty and he lived alone in the mountains all that winter. He wanted to marry Betty Neal, but marriage means money, therefore Vic contracted fifteen hundred dollars' worth of mining for the Duncans, and instead of taking a partner he went after that stake single handed. He is a very rare man who can turn out that amount of labor in a single season, but Gregg furnished that exception which establishes the rule: he did the assessment work on fourteen claims and almost finished the fifteenth, yet he paid the price. Week after week his set of drills was wife and child to him, and for conversation he had only the clangor of the four-pound single-jack on the drill heads, with the crashing of the "shots" now and then as periods to the chatter of iron on iron. He kept at it, and in the end he almost finished the allotted work, but for all of it he paid in full.

By James Hobbs Frederick Schiller Faust wrote under 19 different pen names, the most popular being Max Brand. He was orphaned at an early age and worked as a cowhand during his formative years and attended the University of California, where he was known as a troublemaker. work influenced Louis L'Amour and hundreds of other western authors who followed the literary trail Brand had blazed. This is one of his best novels, violet, yet powerful with an ending that only Max could write - its about Dan Barry - strong, along, righter of wrongs, and don't get on his bad side - or you end up DEAD. In some ways, it's sad these days are now gone - except for being able to pick up his novels once again. If you have never read one of his westerns, you could do no better than to pick up this one.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Starts Off Good & Just Keeps Getting Better By Alison Anderson This is an excellently written story with action, compelling drama & at tmes nail biting suspense. I've read many of Max Brand's books, but this has become my absolute favorite. The characters are well developed & the plot is engaging. I couldn't put it down. It is so much more than a typical western (though I do love the genre). I rooted for the villian despite his dreadful deeds. There is an eerie component to this story that will stick with me for a long time. The wordless understanding the main character shares with his unusual companions is chilling, but simultaneously endearing - an odd mix of emotions for any story - which only proves the talent of the author. I didn't want the story to end. Read this book, I'm sure you'll enjoy it! The Kindle edition does have some typos, but not enough to drive me crazy.

Great Book By James Price I first read this book at a local Library as a 10 year old and was suprised to find it as a digital download for Kindle.I was transported right back to childhood.Max Brand was a great author and words his novels in the same fashion as spoken language of the times.Loved it.

17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Not A Western By Charles Wheeler On the dust cover of the first printing of this book in 1922 it had these words in bold letters, NOT A WESTERN, as if to warn the potential buyer what they would be getting was not the usual Zane Grey fare, and most likely contributed to the low sales of the book. Harpers had no faith in this book, nor did ZG's wife, Dolly, who had urged him not to write it. But this was a book he HAD to write. He felt enormous sympathy for the returning soldier from WW1 and how they were treated medically and emotionally, especially those who returned from the battle field after the first rush of excitement and jubilation the first one's received. Those later returnees were offered no parades, no notice at all, becoming almost victims of the war. Added to this was Zane Grey's hatred of the way society was changing, particularly the morals and the general conduct he saw being displayed by the young women of the day--"The Roaring Twenties" we call it today. This is his protest against that age or time as seen through the eyes of a returning veteran, who does not have long to live. And yes, a lot of what he was protesting against, is still with us today. We never seem to learn as a society; history repeats itself. This book may seem dated, the use of language and its descriptive qualities have changed somewhat, but all in all this book does a good job in depicting what was happening in the country following WW1. The Day of the Beast will never be one of ZG's big sellers, and for years the ending left me wondering if he actually wrote the book this way; but I have come to know more about him as a person through my study of him as a writer and can now see what he was trying to say with this book. If you read this book for what it was intended, then you will not be disappointed. It is NOT A WESTERN, but a very readable and enjoyable book exposing what the author believed was grievous to society then, and by the way even today.

After fighting to protect the U.S. homes and females, he finds values radically changed. Gives a good look at the sudden culture changes.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A different kind of Zane Grey By loves books Nothing is new under the sun. This could be true now, To think this was written about 1920 is amazing it just goes to show how people haven't changed. The story is about a young man who returns from WW1 after being in battle for 3 years many battle scars and emotional wounds. Coming home was a dream that turned into a nightmare. It was written in ZG great style but it is not a western, but I really enjoyed it.

We all in our life hear something that goes like this, “You have to work hard to make money.” Now, I actually heard this from my parents. I can’t necessarily blame them for having this point of view. Them, being born in third world and developing countries, somewhat justifies their beliefs. And, for the most part, there is some truth to it. However, with the power of internet networking and internet sites such as eBay and Etsy, money has never been easier to make. That being said, what I told you that you could make over 100 Etsy products every week? Yeah, I suppose it does sound “doable” if you work your mind off. But, now, what if I told you that 100 products a week was achievable with only one hour of work a day? That’s right! It’ll only take you about 4 minutes per product. Within this short report, I will show you exactly what you will need to do to build a positive and passive Etsy business model, without any fluff. This won’t take countless hours or endless amounts of effort. Heck, you don’t even need to be a great artist to start implementing this method. If you follow all the steps in this book then I’m sure that you will see some results.

At the time I made the trip to Yellowstone Park with President Roosevelt in the spring of 1903, I promised some friends to write up my impressions of the President and of the Park, but I have been slow in getting around to it. The President himself, having the absolute leisure and peace of the White House, wrote his account of the trip nearly two years ago! But with the stress and strain of my life at "Slabsides,"—administering the affairs of so many of the wild creatures of the woods about me,—I have not till this blessed season found the time to put on record an account of the most interesting thing I saw in that wonderful land, which, of course, was the President himself.

Close Up Look of Roosevelt By painterdave Written by a close friend of President Roosevelt, this book gives you a look at the real man, the way he thought, the love of the outdoors, and the love of people who lived in the outdoors. If you appreciate the Wilderness in American, the Parks and mountains, then you will enjoy a book about the man who helped make them possible. Kindle has made many of these books about Roosevelt available and this is one of the best. See Yellowstone before it became what it is today, and enjoy it with the President.

Covers Theodore Roosevelt's big camping trip out west and the semi-adventure that was achieved. The curious thing is that he walked around with Secret Service personnel or military personnel for the majority of the trip. It's interesting to pick up this story and look at modern-day situations. Worth reading, and I'd suggest it for a 10th grade history class as a short read to understand the life and times of "Teddy".

Ordinary job, ordinary life.

"Quit your job? But I thought having a job was a good thing!"

Jobs feel safe. We show up, do what we're supposed to do, and a check for the same amount comes in every couple of weeks. We can feel safe, secure, and comfortable with that. We can budget for housing, transportation, and food. We might even get a few weeks of vacation each year and have enough left over to go somewhere nice. So, what's the problem?

Average isn't satisfying, and repetition is drudgery.

The problem is that average just isn't satisfying. We can be thankful that we're not homeless or completely impoverished all we want, but that still doesn't scratch the itch we all have to live an extraordinary life - to spend more time doing what we love, less time doing what we don't love, and have more financial wealth to support our adventures.

On top of that, most jobs involve doing the same things over and over again. You don't learn. One day blends into the next. You don't grow. Your life lacks richness, diversity, and excitement. All put together, this doesn't make for a very inspiring way to live the one life you get.

Quit and do your own shit.

In Quit Your Job in 6 Months: Why You Should Quit Your Job and How You Can, author and Internet entrepreneur Buck Flogging reveals all of his Internet business secrets to help you build a business from zero to $100 per day, or more, in six months or less; all in your spare time using time-efficient tactics that work, with minimal startup costs.

If you want a shot at achieving real wealth and living the dream life of having the freedom to work anywhere in the world with an Internet connection, the four-book Quit Your Job in 6 Months series will teach you everything you need to know.

But if you get pass that, this book is hands down the quickest to the point explanation of how to build a business. Not a bunch of tech talk just plain albeit crude easy to understand options.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Lots of Hype and No Substance By Michael Gallagher I thought with all of the 4 and 5 star reviews this one must be pretty good: the book starts out with some potential, but there is little meat or substance to the book and, after having founded and developed several successful startups for over 20 years I found it to be a lot of fluff. There’s a lot of high level talk of being able to quit your job and work from home, but a lot of the examples detailed creating useless websites in an effort to get more pageviews for banner ads that are on a cost per thousand model. Other examples are at the 50,000 foot level that might be great for a cocktail party discussion with no substance to the conversations – it would be refreshing, as an example, to have the author talk about substance and those situations where people can really learn. The language and writing style is also very simplistic and liberally laced with profanities and references to male and female anatomy. You just lost all credibility with the 8th grade humor. With a pseudonym for the author of Buck Flogging, which he tells you many times to switch the first letters around, I don’t know why I am surprised.I’m all for relaying valid tips and examples of what has worked and not worked in an effort to empower people to strike out on their own. If I were you, I would stick with one of those and avoid this one: think of the money you saved as more money earned as you contemplate quitting your job and starting out on your own.I picked this book up for free, which added one star to my review, vs. its regular price of whatever he may be deciding to charge - free or not, I would give this one a wide pass.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Great Advice for Entrepreneurs Looking to Up Their Game By Naples Chef Engaging read with lots of practical information for building a successful Internet business by someone who walks the walk (and yes, engages in juvenile humor - which esp. if you've worked in a restaurant kitchen, is actually pretty tame). The beginning piece about the Secret left me a little in the dark (if you too are asking, what the heck is the Secret? We can all be glad we missed that piece of pop culture) but I was quickly hooked with the personal story of Buck's restaurant days, the tasty rabbit ravioli he created and how he left the grind to become the success he is today (spoiler alert: it wasn't easy, but he figured a few things out along the way - which he is generous enough to share). The meat of the book is a clear explanation of how to begin to think about creating an Internet business that will grow and earn money. This is an area many can relate to - produce a good product, but then - what? This is the first book in a series offering an idea of what that next step is. Ultimately I imagine it will be easier just to hire Buck to figure this all out for me, which may be the point. But it certainly has me rethinking my strategy (actually, questioning whether I actually have one) and looking forward to learning more about how to build a successful online business from someone who has.
