The Extra Day, by Algernon Blackwood

About the Author Algernon Blackwood (1869-1951) was born into a well-to-do Kentish family. His parents, converts to a Calvinistic sect, led an austere life, ill-suited to their dreamy and sensitive son. During adolescence, he became fascinated by hypnotism and the supernatural and, on leaving university, studied Hindu philosophy and occultism. Later, he was to draw on these beliefs and experiences in his writing. Sent away to Canada at the age of twenty, his attempts at making a living were wholly unsuccessful and shortly after his return to England, he began to write. The Empty House and Other Ghost Stories, published in 1906, was followed by a series of psychic detective stories, featuring John Silence, 'physician extraordinary'. His reputation as one of the greatest exponents of supernatural fiction began to grow. Chiefly known for his ghost stories, Blackwood wrote in many different forms within the genre. His most personal works, however, are his 'mystical' novels, for example The Centaur, where he explores man's empathy with the forces of the universe. Blackwood also wrote children's fiction. A Prisoner in Fairyland was adapted into the play (later the musical), Starlight Express. Later in life, Blackwood turned to writing radio plays, and in 1947 he began a new career on BBC TV telling ghost stories. He received a knighthood in 1949.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. charming novel that challenges the way we view the world By Jill M. Heins Algernon Blackwood's tale is about three children growing up in the Old Mill House in the Victorian era. When their Uncle Felix comes to visit, his magical storytelling and patience with the children impacts their lives significantly. There is a great deal of foreshadowing that a great surprise is coming with a great revelation. For instance, Uncle Felix says, "Time always prevents, doesn't it? If only we could make it stop--get behind time, as it were--we might have a chance. Some day, perhaps, we shall." Uncle Felix challenges the children to talk to the night wind and ask it for answers. He brings an innocent charm to their lives reminiscent of his more famous work "The Centaur" but not quite as epic.Although this book was not necessarily written for children, it would be a great book to read to kids. It reminds all of us not to miss the wonder in God's creation.

In the foregoing volumes of this series of English Men of Letters, and in other works of a similar nature which have appeared lately as to the Ancient Classics and Foreign Classics, biography has naturally been, if not the leading, at any rate a considerable element. The desire is common to all readers to know not only what a great writer has written, but also of what nature has been the man who has produced such great work. As to all the authors taken in hand before, there has been extant some written record of the man's life. Biographical details have been more or less known to the world, so that, whether of a Cicero, or of a Goethe, or of our own Johnson, there has been a story to tell.

About the Author As young adult, Trollope endured seven years of poverty in the General Post Office in London before accepting a better-paying position as postal surveyor in Banagher, Ireland in 1841. The years in Ireland formed the basis of his second career delineating clerical life in small cathedral towns.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. couple of titans By Ricardo JM If you want to learn a little more about William Thackeray, both as a person and of his works generally, this monograph will certainly satisfy you. Yet, what may astonish you is the overwhelming capacity of Trollope's mind, as well as the vastness of its repository, for he dissects many of his friend's works in such a meticulous way that would imply that he, Trollope, did nothing else in his whole existence other than study Thackeray's diverse writtings as well as every subject, personage or circumstance thereof treated or simply alluded to (even the misheard brogue of the Irish, often scoffed at, is analised!) Now, given the bulk and spectrum of his own oeuvre, coupled with the dissertation he delivered in this volume, I just can't reconcile myself to the notion that Anthony Trollope was a plain human being whose life stretch was shorter than 70 years, whereas it would take me at least a century to read half of what he examined for the composition of this volume alone. Our opinions of some stories do not concur ("Barry Lyndon", "Pendennis"[*], "Rebecca and Rowena" he eulogised, whereas I ditched them unfinished); nevertheless, Trollope's critiques shed light on themes and details I had not remarked and piqued my interest in other tales by Thackeray I have still to check out ("Henry Esmond" and "The Virginians" are next on my list) — whereupon reading this book I felt like attending a lecture on a topic I am crazy about by a congenial professor I also revere.[*] here is my lambasting of "Pendennis": http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R2QO2QA9FKU2HJ

During a boat trip up the Isis River with Reverend Robinson Duckworth and the three young daughters of Henry Liddell, one of whom is named Alice, Lewis Carroll, the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, invents a story about a bored little girl named Alice who goes looking for an adventure. Several years later this tale would be forever immortalized as “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.” The story begins with Alice idly passing away the time next to a river when she sees a White Rabbit in a waistcoat with a pocket watch pass by. She follows the rabbit down the rabbit hole and ends up in the fantasy world of Wonderland. “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.” is filled with a plethora of interesting and fantastical creatures. Along with the persistently tardy White Rabbit, Alice encounters a blue Caterpillar smoking a hookah, the mischievously grinning Cheshire Cat, a Mad Hatter, a March Hare, and a sleepy little Dormouse, whom she attends a tea party with, the King and Queen of Hearts, along with many other curious characters. Beloved my millions of children and adults ever since its first publication, “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland” is a classic tale of fantasy that has been cherished by readers ever since its first publication and will surely delight for many years to come. Also included in this volume is the sequel, “Through the Looking-Glass.” This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and includes all the original illustrations by John Tenniel.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, by Lewis Carroll

Amazon.com Review "And what is the use of a book," thought Alice, "without pictures or conversations?"

Taking to heart his charming, insatiably curious heroine's words, Lewis Carroll worked many long hours (days, months...) with illustrator Sir John Tenniel to create the most perfect pictures imaginable for what were to become instant classics: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. When thinking about Alice and her dreamy surrealistic adventures down the rabbit hole and behind the looking-glass, who can help picturing the golden-haired girl in her lilac dress and striped stockings, gazing up at the Cheshire Cat or arguing with Tweedledum and Tweedledee? Tenniel's drawings remained black and white for over 40 years until 1911, when eight prints in each book were hand colored. Now, for the first time, every remaining illustration has been colored, making these the first editions to feature all of the original art in full color. Traditionalists need not worry: colorist Diz Wallis colored proofs taken from Tenniel's carefully preserved woodblocks, remaining faithful to his original drawings. The beautiful tones of these new hardcover editions look as natural as can be; they could just as easily be from the 19th century. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Review “A work of glorious intelligence and literary devices…Nonsense becomes a form of higher sense” –Malcolm Bradbury“Alice in Wonderland is one of the top 25 books of all time. I always loved the book and I always loved the various characters, the psychedelic nature of it and kind-of odd allegorical stories inside stories. I always thought it was beautiful.” –Jonny Depp“Wonderland and the world through the Looking Glass were, I always knew, different from other imagined worlds. Nothing could be changed, although things in the story were always changing…Carroll moves his readers as he moves chess pieces and playing cards.” –A. S. Byatt“It would not have occurred to me even to suspect that the “children’s tale” was in brilliant ways coded to be read by adults and was in fact an English classic, a universally acclaimed intellectual tour de force and what might be described as a psychological/anthropological dissection of Victorian England. It seems not to have occurred to me that the child-Alice of drawing rooms, servants, tea and crumpets and chess, was of a distinctly different background than my own. I must have been the ideal reader: credulous, unjudging, eager, thrilled. I knew only that I believed in Alice, absolutely.” –Joyce Carol Oates“The Alices are the greatest nonsense ever written, and far greater, in my view, than most sense.” –Philip Pullman

By Monika My first exposure to Lewis Carroll's classic children's story was through the 1951 Disney film adaptation "Alice in Wonderland," which I watched repeatedly as a child. The creative quality of the story never failed to fascinate me, and I kept going back despite my deep-rooted terror of the frightful Queen of Hearts, who always gave me nightmares! However, it was not until recently, as an adult, that I ever picked up the book/s upon which that film was based. In some ways I wish I had read it when I was younger, as the book certainly makes a great deal more sense than the movie does (as much sense as a story of this sort can, anyhow), but thankfully this book is unique in that it is just as enjoyable for adults as for children. The story is actually spread across two books, here contained in a single volume. "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" was first published in 1865 and relates the events that take place after young Alice falls asleep during her lessons and dreams of following a white rabbit down a rabbit hole. Alice encounters all manner of strange creatures in her dream, and finds herself in all sorts of curious predicaments where common sense fails and the nonsensical comes to be expected. There is no central, concrete storyline, but rather Alice moves rapidly from one bizarre situation to the next before waking once more and relating the whole adventure to her sister. The second of the two books, "Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There," appeared in 1871 and is very similar in nature to the first, though having a slightly different plot. Here Alice steps through an ordinary looking-glass one day, only to find herself in a world where, if you wish to get anywhere, you must walk in the opposite direction! Walking toward your desired destination only gets you further and further away. Also, interestingly, the land which Alice has entered is essentially a giant chessboard, and she must move through the different squares to reach the other side if she wishes to become a queen (which she does). The characters Carroll created in these two stories are some of the most strikingly unique and unforgettable in the world of literature. Alice herself, based largely on Alice Liddell, a real-life child of whom Carroll was very fond, is a wonderful heroine that you can't help admiring. Throughout all of her backwards and upside-down adventures, she remains ever sensible and analytical, always trying to reason her way out of the most unreasonable situations. Other characters a reader won't soon forget include the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the Dormouse, the Cheshire Cat, Bill the Lizard, the Caterpillar, the Duchess and her peppery cook, the aforementioned Queen of Hearts, the Mock Turtle, the Gryphon, the Red and White Queens, the talking flowers, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Sheep, Humpty Dumpty, and the Red and White Knights. Carroll also created many fascinating new creatures in his stories, including bread-and-butterflies, rocking-horseflies, "slithy toves," "mome raths" and more. What I find most intriguing, as an adult reader of these books, is Carroll's brilliant use of wordplay and symbolism throughout the stories. Nearly everything has some sort of double meaning. There are hidden messags and subtle witticisms on every page. Carroll also includes several parodies of what were well-known songs and rhymes in England at the time. Young children will love the books for their fantastic qualities and imaginative inspiration, but most readers will not pick up on the many puns and jokes until they are a little older, so these stories really do have something to offer to anyone, no matter what age. I'd highly recommend the book to any reader - and be sure to get an edition that includes the original illustrations. This review refers to the 2004 Barnes & Noble Classics printing, with introduction and notes by Tan Lin.

Kauffmann There is one thing that all potential customers must keep in mind when buying any Alice book: Do not purchase one that does not include the illustrations of John Tenniel! This edition includes all of them and the quality of the reproductions on the pages are excellent. Tenniel's illustrations help add to the childish excitement of Carroll's stories and will be especially invaluable to teenagers and adults, having just by nature of growing up lost some of the imaginative innocence, that ability to stretch reality, that we all possessed as kids.Of course, the illustrations wouldn't mean jack if they didn't have a captivating story to work with. Carroll's amusing tale of nonsense is targeted as a kid's book, and that is always where many of our fondest memories of it will remain, but as a college student reading it I was amazed by its power to suspend reality and return me to a level of imagination that I had simply thought I lost somewhere along the way. The trip down the rabbit hole can be quite a different experience from a different point of view. This particular edition also includes a good introduction and very helpful explanatory notes organized chapter by chapter. The introduction and notes offer insights to Carroll's life and his relations with the real life Alice and her family that, from a student viewpoint, reveal an interesting and more personal side of the Alice tales.

NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE FINALISTBoston Globe Best Book of 2015Washington Post Best Book of 2015Magisterial in scope, this dual biography examines two complex lives that began alike but ended on opposite sides of the century's greatest conflict.Born at the dawn of the twentieth century, Leni Riefenstahl and Marlene Dietrich both came of age in Weimar Berlin, a time of great political ferment. Glamour and decadence thrived beside abject poverty, and the German capital's outpouring of literature, fashion, and film marked it as the most vital European metropolis. As young women of this era, Dietrich and Riefenstahl lived so close to each other that Riefenstahl could see into Dietrich's apartment from the roof of her building. Both women seized upon the revolutionary energy of the 1920s, seeking careers on the stage and in film.In 1929, filmmakers were casting what would become the iconic role of Lola-Lola (who made "Falling in Love Again" a sensation) in the groundbreaking sound film The Blue Angel. Riefenstahl―whose work in her "mountain films" had already made her a national emblem for the athletic rigor and spirited independence of the New Woman―hoped for the part but didn't get it. Only a few years later she became the official filmmaker of the Third Reich. Dietrich, however, won the role and the adoration of millions when she moved to Hollywood and redefined the "vixen" for a new era. While Dietrich's slender and androgynous beauty made her a fashion icon whose influence can be seen to this day, Riefenstahl's own iconography is no less indelible. With her work on two of the most notorious―if artistically sophisticated―propaganda films of all time―Triumph of the Will and Olympia―Riefenstahl was a progenitor of fascist symbolism. After the war she proclaimed her ignorance of Hitler's motives, but she could never completely distance herself from her Nazi collaboration. Dietrich vehemently condemned Hitler during World War II and found a renewed sense of purpose touring with the USO, but as a result she could never comfortably return to her native Germany. Both women were "prodigies of will, discipline, endurance, self-reinvention, and exaltation of the body in all its muscular, androgynous, pose-striking pagan glory" (James Wolcott), and both had their grand passions, but neither abandoned ambition for the sake of love. As award-winning biographer Karin Wieland shows, in their later years, both women grappled with controlling their image―Riefenstahl by pursuing an additional career in photography, and Dietrich by eventually hiding at home as her famous beauty was ravaged by time.Skillfully juxtaposing these two fascinating lives, Wieland brings to vivid life a time of international upheaval, chronicling radical evolutions of politics, fame, and femininity on a grand stage. Examining the moral responsibility of the artist, Wieland poses questions as deeply relevant to our century as to the last. A magisterial portrait of two diverging but lasting images of the modern woman, Dietrich & Riefenstahl is "a superb" (Die Zeit) panorama of the twentieth century.25 photographs

Dietrich & Riefenstahl: Hollywood, Berlin, and a Century in Two Lives, by Karin Wieland

Review “Wieland is shrewd…about her subjects and has done serious work…that give her book credibility, texture, and unending interest. This is the story of two glamorous women whose achievements in another time might have been no more substantial than the images on a screen but who assumed real-life roles with the highest historical stakes.” (Claudia Roth Pierpont - The New Yorker)“The true subject of [Wieland’s] dual biography is…the contrast between good and evil…Did the women ally themselves with a particular nation because that nation reflected their authentic selves? Or did the choice itself―Dietrich's move to America; Riefenstahl's complicity with the Third Reich―transform them into different people than they would otherwise have been? Wieland offers no pat answers…Evil here is not banal; it is jaw-droppingly bizarre and eclipses good.” (M. G. Lord - Los Angeles Times)“In this lively, deliciously gossipy dual biography, Karin Wieland treats both with great sympathy but also clear-eyed assessment.” (Kate Tuttle - Boston Globe)“[With] hypnotic power…. Wieland uses these two virtuosos’ lives to generate piercing insights about ambition, ego, creativity and the life-changing, world-altering repercussions of a momentous choice.” (Michael Sragow - Washington Post)“Behold Karin Wieland's Dietrich & Riefenstahl, a double-decker biography about a pair of sacred monsters that motors the length of a century, through two world wars, countless affairs, still-burning controversies, and white satin streams of Hollywood lore, never losing focus on the point on the horizon where fame and infamy meet…As a mere mortal myself, I finished Dietrich & Riefenstahl fully sated and completely agog.” (James Wolcott, Vanity Fair columnist and author of the PEN Award–winning collection Critical Mass)“Illuminating…. Via a fluent, often witty translation by Shelley Frisch, Wieland draws the portrait of women who were ambitious to a degree stunning in their day. Moreover, by tracking their divergent careers together, she is able subtly to suggest some answers to a question that hangs over every mid-century German artist: what kind of responses were available to the Nazi apocalypse?” (Farran Smith Nehme - The Guardian (UK))“A sweeping, revelatory dual biography.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“Separating fiction from the apocryphal, German political theory historian Wieland takes readers on a densely layered, whirlwind tour of Weimar Germany, 1930s Hollywood, the Third Reich, World War II, and more…. An absorbing read and a must-have for film collections. Highly recommended where Erik Larson's In the Garden of Beasts is popular.” (Kent Turner - School Library Journal)“Marlene Dietrich and Leni Riefenstahl have found an ideal biographer in Karin Wieland. She brings a lively style, a wealth of detail, and a perfect balance between skeptical objectivity and measured sympathy to her account of the parallel and then diverging lives of these two ambitious women.” (Celia Applegate, Vanderbilt University)

About the Author Karin Wieland lives in Berlin and is an historian of political theory at the Hamburg Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Culture.Shelley Frisch is the prize-winning translator of biographies of Nietzsche, Einstein, and Kafka. She lives in Princeton, New Jersey.

They were focused and ambitious. Dietrich was more practical, in her way, less concerned about "art." Riefenstahl said she was all about her art, but just like Dietrich, she was all about herself.I think they both invented themselves as they went. Neither seemed to have deep relationships and neither was very self-reflective. The book shows them in all their long-lived glory, self-absorption and all. Each did something right to live as long as each did.The book makes it clear that Dietrich chose her side far better than Riefenstahl did, morally and as a career move. I approve of Marlene much more than Leni, but I sure can't say I like her any better. You'd always be waiting for the other shoe to drop, if you were friends of either of them. The compare and contrast was well done. The book flowed and was very readable. I thoroughly recommend it.

From the historical standpoint it was hard not to compare with what's unfolding politically right now in the USA. These were two very complex and egocentric woman who coexisted in the changing and tumultuous twentieth century. The book is very well written and obviously thoroughly researched. Although they were about the same age and started their careers in the Berlin of the 1920's, their paths took them in very different directions. Dietrich became a vehement anti-Nazi and American movie icon. Riefenstahl became a friend of Hitler and his documentary film maker.

In 1975, three twelve-year-old boys met in the nerd’s corner of the cafeteria at Mission Hill Junior High School and discovered that they all shared the same raunchy, pubescent sense of humor. Over the next forty years, they managed to preserve their friendship and their sanity by tapping into the goofy immaturity of their youth with double-meaning word-play jokes. They recently collected the best of those jokes into the book that you now hold in your hands. So, flip it open, grab your lunch bag, and join us. You’re welcome. And we hardly even know you.

Dangerously Funny By Roger Thornhill Warning: This book is not recommended for those recovering from abdominal surgery, due to the likelihood of stitches tearing out due to laughter. For everyone else, this is a must-read, desert-island type book. These unforgettable jokes will forever affect your consciousness - you will never look at a word ending in "or," "er," or "is" in the same way again.

From the Inside Flap The Bookcassette® format is a special recording technique developed as a means of condensing the full, unabridged audio text of a book to record it on fewer tapes. In order to listen to these tapes, you will need a cassette player with balance control to adjust left/right speaker output. Special adaptors to allow these tapes to be played on any cassette player are available through the publisher or some US retail electronics stores.

About the Author Max Brand's action-filled stories of adventure and heroism in the American West continue to entertain readers throughout the world. Brand penned over 200 full-length Westerns in his career, including Destry Rides Again and Montana Rides. Several of his novels are available from Brilliance Audio.

From AudioFile This spellbinding Western is not your usual homespun yarn. The vengeful tale of Pierre le Rouge, gunman McGurk and outlaw Jim Boone's wild daughter, Jack, is suspenseful and exciting. Dick Hill's narration captures Brand's characterizations and literary voice with consistency and clarity. Hill sets the mood by sounding like an old cowboy telling the story around a campfire. The many male characters are easily distinguished, and the two females are believable. Listeners are sure to be transported back to the romance of the old West. Buy for libraries in which Westerns circulate or recommend to non-Western listeners. S.C.A. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

He was orphaned at an early age and worked as a cowhand during his formative years and attended the University of California, where he was known as a troublemaker. work influenced Louis L'Amour and hundreds of other western authors who followed the literary trail Brand had blazed. This is one of his best novels, nasty McGurk, yet powerful with an ending that only Max could write. In some ways, it's sad these days are now gone - except for being able to pick up his novels once again. If you have never read one of his westerns, you could do no better than to pick up this one.

The Rome Express, the direttissimo, or most direct, was approaching Paris one morning in March, when it became known to the occupants of the sleeping-car that there was something amiss, very much amiss, in the car. The train was travelling the last stage, between Laroche and Paris, a run of a hundred miles without a stop. It had halted at Laroche for early breakfast, and many, if not all the passengers, had turned out. Of those in the sleeping-car, seven in number, six had been seen in the restaurant, or about the platform; the seventh, a lady, had not stirred. All had reëntered their berths to sleep or doze when the train went on, but several were on the move as it neared Paris, taking their turn at the lavatory, calling for water, towels, making the usual stir of preparation as the end of a journey was at hand.

Charming sleeping car murder mystery of 1907 By Patto This little book was written in an era when train travel was truly luxurious for the well to do. And class lines were distinctly drawn. As the beautiful countess in the book says, "I do not allow my maid to wear colors."The countess is a central figure. We can't be sure if she's involved in the murder – or as innocent as her luminous eyes proclaim. There is no delay in presenting the reader with a body. By page two, a man is found stabbed and beaten in his sleeping car on the Rome Express. Most of the plot concerns the investigation.Since the train is passing through France when the murder takes place, the Paris police are involved. There's a definite feeling that French justice is bound by fewer rules than English justice, and the passengers are terrified to be at the mercy of these peremptory policemen. It's fun to observe the French Chief of Detectives, an emotional little man, interrogating the various passengers and getting alternately hoodwinked and cranked up.If the book has a hero, it's General Collingham, a tall imposing man with both a romantic streak and sharp powers of observation. The author too was a military man, and he imbues this middle-aged soldier with many likable qualities.Arthur Griffiths is not an especially brilliant writer, but he does a good job of describing a pivotal scene in the grisly Paris Morgue, which at that period was actually a tourist attraction! This is not my favorite vintage mystery, but I enjoyed it. The Resurrected Press edition is well produced and enhanced by a brief but informative introduction.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not bad at all By Emma It's rather like reading a Hercule Poirot adventure, and I only rate something 5 stars when it is perfect. I enjoyed reading The Rome Express a great deal. I had no problems with dated language or usage, and the only issue I found was the author's belittling of the French detectives. I will look favorably on Arthur Griffiths' work when looking for reading material in the future.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Mildly Amusing Piece Of Period Fluff By propertius A formulaic murder mystery that its only charm is in the anachronistic phrases and expressions. The plot is vary predictable and the characters are totally one dimensional. However, if you want to get an impression of how the Victorian public viewed its heroes, then it is worth the time spent on it. If you like happy endings then so much the better but rest assured this is just pulp fiction and of only passing interest.

The Wonderful Visit, by H.G. Wells

About the Author Herbert George Wells (21 September 1866 – 13 August 1946), known primarily as H. G. Wells, was a prolific English writer in many genres, including the novel, history, politics, and social commentary, and textbooks and rules for war games. He is now best remembered for his science fiction novels, and Wells is called the father of science fiction, along with Jules Verne and Hugo Gernsback. His most notable science fiction works include The Time Machine(1895), The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897), and The War of the Worlds (1898). Wells' earliest specialized training was in biology, and his thinking on ethical matters took place in a specifically and fundamentally Darwinian context. He was also from an early date an outspoken socialist, often (but not always, as at the beginning of the First World War) sympathising with pacifist views. His later works became increasingly political and didactic, and he wrote little science fiction, while he sometimes indicated on official documents that his profession was that of journalist. Novels like Kipps and The History of Mr Polly, which describe lower-middle-class life, led to the suggestion, when they were published, that he was a worthy successor to Charles Dickens, but Wells described a range of social strata and even attempted, in Tono-Bungay (1909), a diagnosis of English society as a whole.

A Charming Victorian Fantasy By Nash Android In a parallel dimension, creatures of myth and fantasy live their magical lives without care, or pain, or need of food. One day, a rift opens, and one of its inhabitants falls through into late Victorian England. It's an angel. It's not really much of an angel. Its only miraculous ability seems to be an unnatural talent for playing the violin, but it does have wings and other angelic features. The local English vicar, Mr. Hilyer, hears rumors of sightings of a large, strange bird in the area, and, being an amateur ornithologist, he does what all good naturalists of the time would do. He grabs his gun and heads out to bag the beast to be catalogued, stuffed, and added to his collection. The scene in which Wells describes this particular series of events had me cracking up. (This is one area in which I think modern society has made some progress.) Of course, Hilyer ends up shooting the angel and injuring its wing. After that, what's a Victorian vicar to do other than apologize politely and invite the mythological winged gentleman to be his houseguest while he recovers?First published in 1895, Wells does here what he is well known for -- satirical comment on Victorian society. The angel, coming from an alternate reality that knows nothing of human culture, provides an outside perspective from which to examine it. Wells allows him to do so, and Mr. Angel's innocent and nonjudgmental observations can be quite charming. At one point he asks, insofar as people do not like pain, why is it that they keep inflicting it on one another. Good question, I thought.Biases about race, gender, and social class are dragged out for dry ridicule, as are such things as clothing styles, beliefs, values and other attitudes. In one scene, Wells, as narrator, pops in briefly to apologize to the reader for making a servant appear too much like a real person and promises that he'll make sure they're portrayed more accurately as mindless stereotypes in some future story. This cracked me up, too, but I suppose I'm easily amused. From an outside perspective, these Victorian conventions all seem somewhat arbitrary, if not silly, but perhaps no more so than our current ones. (I'm sure you can imagine a few examples.) The point Wells is trying to make, I think, is one that cannot be made too often. Question your assumptions. Question your values. Do they make sense? What do they say about you? This advice is as good today as it was in 1895.I suppose I could pick on a few things to criticize about the book. It could have been funnier; the satire could have been sharper, but somehow I think Wells was intentionally trying to be, if not subtle, and least not blatantly offensive. His audience, after all, included people who held the attitudes he was holding up for ridicule, and you don't want to upset your readers too much. They might stop buying your books. Both the beginning and the ending leave questions unanswered. How did the rift between dimensions open? Suddenly the angel simply appears here with no understanding of how. It leaves, presumably returning, in the same way, possibly taking with it a human housemaid, which it was previously explained does not happen. No one new ever shows up in the angel universe. No one is born, no one dies, and no one visits. Except for this, we don't know much about the parallel dimension that is home for angels and hippogriffs and magical beings of other types. That's about as critical as I'm prepared to be. I found this book humorous and charming. Insofar as it is readily available free as an e-book, it is well worth the cost. (I snagged a freebie Kindle version from Amazon.) It is also worth the time it takes to read. I highly recommend it.

I had a hard time getting interested in reading it, but figured because of the author it would have an underlying meaning. It is about how people are quick to judge and want to impose their personal views on others. How closed minded many people are and not willing to accept others. Be open minded to "see" all that you can "see in it" as you read.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. An Emotionally Charged Work of Social Criticism By Brandon Shinault I love H.G Wells. He was a man of deep insight, broad subjects, and love. Im not afraid to admit, that this story brought tears to my eyes. Its not supposed to be some incredible science fiction clencher. Its a critique on humanity and asks the question, what would an angel, previously ignorant of our affairs, do, if he was suddenly dropped into our "World of Death?" This is a work that will remain close to my heart, forever, I suspect.

Following the adventure of the 3 young men in the Kentucky Frontier was intriguing. Filled with danger and tense situations. These 3 are not well known names in our learned history, which makes it even more interesting to see how others fared in the wilderness. I highly recommend this book for people of all ages.

The world mends. In my younger days people believed in mahogany; some of my readers will remember it—a heavy, shining substance, having a singularly close resemblance to raw liver, exceedingly heavy to move, and esteemed on one or other count the noblest of all woods. Such of us as were very poor and had no mahogany pretended to have mahogany; and the proper hepatite tint was got by veneering. That makes one incline to think it was the colour that pleased people. In those days there was a word "trashy," now almost lost to the world. My dear Aunt Charlotte used that epithet when, in her feminine way, she swore at people she did not like. "Trashy" and "paltry" and "Brummagem" was the very worst she could say of them. And she had, I remember, an intense aversion to plated goods and bronze halfpence.

Certain Personal Matters, by H. G. Wells

About the Author Often called the father of science fiction, British author Herbert George (H. G.) Wells literary works are notable for being some of the first titles of the science fiction genre, and include such famed titles as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man. Despite being fixedly associated with science fiction, Wells wrote extensively in other genres and on many subjects, including history, society and politics, and was heavily influenced by Darwinism. His first book, Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought, offered predictions about what technology and society would look like in the year 2000, many of which have proven accurate. Wells went on to pen over fifty novels, numerous non-fiction books, and dozens of short stories. His legacy has had an overwhelming influence on science fiction, popular culture, and even on technological and scientific innovation. Wells died in 1946 at the age of 79.

Wells' "Certain Personal Matters" By Amazon Customer A well written but cranky look an many of the customs of his day, disagreeing with many, in a humourous way. Not the author's best work, IMHO, but amusing as an insight into the authors thinking and sense of humor.

Highlights the pitfalls of modern business and how they can be avoided By michael naylor The world is changing faster than ever and businesses need to change with it or be left behind. Apple said "think Different" and they have done pretty well lately. What this book shows you is that if you do not think different and do not come up with innovative ideas customers are going to leave for the companies that will. The digital age has brought a lot of advantages to business but if you do not use it correctly you will lose customers. The book opens explaining that technology is important but just having the latest technology is not enough. Innovative thinking and promoting an innovative atmosphere are important. Back to Apple they have released even recently ideas that have been done before and that other people are doing now. The technology is great, but it's not new. What is new is they way it is being marketed, the way it integrates with their other devices and the general usability to the end user. The book also explains the importance of having a diverse workplace along with an atmosphere that promotes creativity and innovation. If you have a group of employees that all look at the same issues the same way they will inevitably come up with the same solutions. If you have a diverse workplace with people who think outside the box, inside the box and some who don't even consider the box you will get a range of ideas and solutions to any issues from which you can pick which works best in each situation and for each market. The book has real world examples of where businesses are making the same mistakes over and over again and show how this is in part due to having its decision makers all be from the same background with the same views. Overall this book is a must read for any business decision maker and anyone who wants to be making the decisions in their business as it highlights the common pitfalls and shows you how they can be avoided. This book will change the way you look at business in general and as promised show you why brand risk management is a game changer.

The journey which this little book is to describe was very agreeable and fortunate for me. After an uncouth beginning, I had the best of luck to the end. But we are all travellers in what John Bunyan calls the wilderness of this world—all, too, travellers with a donkey: and the best that we find in our travels is an honest friend. He is a fortunate voyager who finds many. We travel, indeed, to find them. They are the end and the reward of life. They keep us worthy of ourselves; and when we are alone, we are only nearer to the absent.
