In the year 1850 the two estates of Ballintubber and Morony were sold to Mr. Philip Jones, under the Estates Court, which had then been established. They had been the property of two different owners, but lay conveniently so as to make one possession for one proprietor. They were in the County Galway, and lay to the right and left of the road which runs down from the little town of Headford to Lough Corrib. At the time when the purchase was made there was no quieter spot in all Ireland, or one in which the lawful requirements of a landlord were more readily performed by a poor and obedient tenantry.

From the Publisher Designed for school districts, educators, and students seeking to maximize performance on standardized tests, Webster’s paperbacks take advantage of the fact that classics are frequently assigned readings in English courses. By using a running thesaurus at the bottom of each page, this edition of An Ideal Husband by Oscar Wilde was edited for students who are actively building their vocabularies in anticipation of taking PSAT®, SAT®, AP® (Advanced Placement®), GRE®, LSAT®, GMAT® or similar examinations.

About the Author Oscar Wilde was born on October 16, 1854, to the Irish nationalist and writer Speranza Wilde and the doctor William Wilde. After graduating from Oxford in 1878, Wilde moved to London, where he became notorious for his sharp wit and flamboyant style of dress. Though he was publishing plays and poems throughout the 1880s, it wasn t until the late 1880s and early 1890s that his work started to be received positively. In 1895, Oscar Wilde was tried for homosexuality and was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison. Tragically, this downfall came at the height of his career, as his plays, An Ideal Husband "and The Importance of Being Earnest, "were playing to full houses in London. He was greatly weakened by the privations of prison life, and moved to Paris after his sentence. Wilde died in a hotel room, either of syphilis or complications from ear surgery, in Paris, on November 30, 1900.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Webster’s edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of synonyms and antonyms for difficult and often ambiguous English words that are encountered in other works of literature, conversation, or academic examinations. Extremely rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority in the notes compared to words which are "difficult, and often encountered" in examinations. Rather than supply a single synonym, many are provided for a variety of meanings, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of the English language, and avoid using the notes as a pure crutch. Having the reader decipher a word’s meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. If a difficult word is not noted on a page, chances are that it has been highlighted on a previous page. A more complete thesaurus is supplied at the end of the book; Synonyms and antonyms are extracted from Webster’s Online Dictionary.

An Ideal Husband is an Ideal Wilde By Nice Person British politician Lord Robert Chiltern is blackmailed by the immoral Mrs. Cheverly, with a secret from his youth, leading to a crisis in his life, and in his marriage to the virtuous Lady Chiltern. It is up to his friend, the delightfully foppish Lord Goring to help extricate him. All is well that ends well, but not after much witty interplay and intrigue and masterful wordsmithing by Oscar.Wilde shows us that the acceptance of our loved ones' flaws is perhaps the corner stone of love. Oscar Wilde examines love, honesty, friendship, and forgiveness with a humorous, witty happy ending.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. "Well, she wore far too much rouge last night, and not quite enough clothes. That is always a sign of desperation in a woman." By Don Kidwell Humorous, well-formatted play in it's entirety including a fine table of contents with handy links taking you to the persons of the play, scenes of the play and each of the fourth act. One I would like to see performed live one day both for its' wit and the more poignant passages like "It is always worth while asking a question, though it is not always worth while answering one." Very good ebook and I do recommend!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A snarky, wonderful play By Talia This was a hilarious swipe at English living, and Wilde provided many laughs and delightful twists. This is my second Wilde story, and I'm looking forward to reading more. He's so clever and witty!Rex Harrison's performance was fantastic, and it was easy to lose myself within the story, listening to his dulcet tones deliver Wilde's wit and humor.

By Mom The wit is sharp; the illustrations are attractive, and the story seems far out but fun, that is until you get to the book's end and read the list of actual Trump quotes! Beth Schaefer's done it again, taken real life and pared it down so that we can all laugh about things that otherwise might--or at least should--make us cry. Trump for Principal will not only put a smile on your face, it might just enourage you to get more involved too, so readers enjoy and beware!

The stout old Glamorgan Castle, with studding-sails on either side, was running before the trade-wind on her course to India. The passengers were lounging about on the poop, sheltered by an awning from the burning rays of the sun, which struck down with no inconsiderable force, making even the well-seasoned Indians grumble and incline to be quarrelsome. Of passengers the ship had her full complement, for all the cabins were full. There were among them generals, and judges, and officers of all ranks; as well as married dames returning to their husbands, and young ladies committed to their care; but few of them need be noticed.

Barlow's Great American Circus in its triumphal progress from State to State was close at hand, and immense yellow posters announcing its arrival were liberally displayed on fences and barns, while smaller bills were put up in the post office, the hotel, and the principal stores, and distributed from house to house.

This model offers truly important lessons for everyone who wants to leave their competition in the dust―and then some. Heavy Metal Management is, naturally, also about rhetoric and attitude between all the stakeholders, competitors, clients, investors, regulators and staff that may be present in your current or future company. In Part Two, we compare Heavy Metal Management with the most popular management theories in world history. We do this to demonstrate how global business will enter a totally new era with our methods, reassuringly far from the nicely parted haircuts of the Eighties and Nineties. In Part Three, we bring up a proverbial groupie busload of special issues not covered elsewhere―such as leadership within the realm of Heavy Metal Management. We also point out traps, pitfalls and other kinds of damnation that heavy metal history teaches us to avoid. So let’s get started!

Finally breaking free from that heavy chain, he discovers afresh the beauty and goodness of life. Throughout the story he struggles with self-condemnatory thoughts, and it is only through being drawn out of himself to help the people around him that he rises above his low self-image and comes to experience the joy, beauty, and value of self-giving love.I don't know anything of the background of this story or at which period of his writing career that Dickens wrote it, but it did not seem to have, I'm going to say, as "Dickensy" a flavor as his other works I've read. A Dickens fan, I think, would definitely still be able to pick out certain turns of phrase, themes, ideas, or literary ploys that are characteristic of Dickens, but on the whole, it seemed to be lacking something of the Dickens I am familiar with. Perhaps that is only because this is a short story, and it is the first of his short stories that I have read. Overall, it was an enjoyable short read and I definitely recommend it.

“Are they really coming to-morrow, granny?” exclaimed Fanny Vallery, a fair, blue-eyed, sweet-looking girl, as she gazed eagerly at the face of Mrs Leslie, who was seated in an arm-chair, near the drawing-room window. “Oh, how I long to see papa, and mamma, and dear little Norman! I have thought, and thought so much about them; and India is so far off it seemed as if they would never reach England.”

Good plot By John Connelly The overarching goal - overcoming evil by doing good - permeates the book but never seems to develop as deeply as one would expect. In spite of being 290 pages in length, and repetitious in its main theme, I was disappointed. However, to obtain it for free on Kindle was sweet and I'd be wrong to condemn it too harshly. I read it in twenty-four hours none the worse for it. I should mention that as a white male, I found the book to be somewhat slanted against males, in spite of it being written by an Englishman in the latter 1880's. All female characters in the book were smart, forward looking and gentle in spirit, whereas the males were a mixed bag - some foolish, one wicked and two gentle, but the later two only appeared in the final third of the book. The two main characters' attitudes were telegraphed throughout the book and you could tell how the book would end after reading the first twenty pages. I can't honestly say that I'd recommend it to a friend, sorry.

This book is so fascinating because it's not only her words but the words of her teacher and how she was taught. I could not comprehend how someone who is deaf and blind could learn words well enough to describe a beautiful summer sky. But Helen's thirst for knowledge leads her beyond the bounds that most achieve. It is a very interesting account of how this young girt blossoms into a young woman when her dark world is enlightened by the meaning of language and her ability to not only communicate, but go on to help others.

By Olnie Quite delightful reading about the remarkable little girl who emerges from soundless darkness to appreciate all the wonders of the world. At the same time it is about the dedicated teacher who participates in this process of discovery. The letters of both women, featured at the end of the story, give an added contemporary view of how it all evolved.

By Mary I am the one inspired and blessed to have been introduced to the amazing Miss Anne Sullivan who was gifted to open the mind and heart of a true witness of God's miracles in the life of Helen Keller. I myself am better within for having read her life story. She lived quiet a journey.

How is this book unique?

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography Macbeth /məkˈbɛθ/ (full title The Tragedy of Macbeth) is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare. Set mainly in Scotland, the play illustrates the damaging physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power for its own sake. The play is believed to have been written between 1599 and 1606. The earliest account of a performance of what was probably Shakespeare's play is April 1611, when Simon Forman recorded seeing such a play at the Globe Theatre. It was first published in the Folio of 1623, possibly from a prompt book. It was most likely written during the reign of James I, who had been James VI of Scotland before he succeeded to the English throne in 1603. James was a patron of Shakespeare's acting company, and of all the plays Shakespeare wrote during James's reign, Macbeth most clearly reflects the playwright's relationship with the sovereign. The Comedy of Errors is one of William Shakespeare's early plays. It is his shortest and one of his most farcical comedies, with a major part of the humour coming from slapstick and mistaken identity, in addition to puns and word play. The Comedy of Errors (along with The Tempest) is one of only two of Shakespeare's plays to observe the classical unities. It has been adapted for opera, stage, screen and musical theatre. The Comedy of Errors tells the story of two sets of identical twins that were accidentally separated at birth. Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant, Dromio of Syracuse, arrive in Ephesus, which turns out to be the home of their twin brothers, Antipholus of Ephesus and his servant, Dromio of Ephesus. When the Syracusans encounter the friends and families of their twins, a series of wild mishaps based on mistaken identities lead to wrongful beatings, a near-seduction, the arrest of Antipholus of Ephesus, and false accusations of infidelity, theft, madness, and demonic possession.

Amazon.com Review A lush, cautionary tale of a life of vileness and deception or a loving portrait of the aesthetic impulse run rampant? Why not both? After Basil Hallward paints a beautiful, young man's portrait, his subject's frivolous wish that the picture change and he remain the same comes true. Dorian Gray's picture grows aged and corrupt while he continues to appear fresh and innocent. After he kills a young woman, "as surely as if I had cut her little throat with a knife," Dorian Gray is surprised to find no difference in his vision or surroundings. "The roses are not less lovely for all that. The birds sing just as happily in my garden."

As Hallward tries to make sense of his creation, his epigram-happy friend Lord Henry Wotton encourages Dorian in his sensual quest with any number of Wildean paradoxes, including the delightful "When we are happy we are always good, but when we are good we are not always happy." But despite its many languorous pleasures, The Picture of Dorian Gray is an imperfect work. Compared to the two (voyeuristic) older men, Dorian is a bore, and his search for ever new sensations far less fun than the novel's drawing-room discussions. Even more oddly, the moral message of the novel contradicts many of Wilde's supposed aims, not least "no artist has ethical sympathies. An ethical sympathy in an artist is an unpardonable mannerism of style." Nonetheless, the glamour boy gets his just deserts. And Wilde, defending Dorian Gray, had it both ways: "All excess, as well as all renunciation, brings its own punishment."

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. First published in 1890 in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine and the following year in novel form, The Picture of Dorian Gray categorically changed Victorian Britain and the landscape of literature. An ostentatious, self-confessed aesthete, known for his wit and intellect, Wilde not only had to endure his prose being labeled "poisonous" and "vulgar," but also suffer its use as evidence in the ensuing trial, resulting in his eventual imprisonment for crimes of "gross indecency." Frankel's introduction provides a deft preliminary analysis of the novel itself—exploring etymology and extensive editorial alterations (both accidental and deliberate)—and offers valuable insight into the socio-cultural juxtaposition of aristocratic Victorian society and the London underworld. The original typescript provides the unique opportunity to examine what was considered acceptable in both the US and UK at the time. Intriguing annotations allude to Wilde's influences and enterprising range of reference, incorporating art, poetry, literature, Greek mythology, philosophy, and fashion (certain to inspire further reading; an appendix is provided). Comparisons are drawn between Dorian Gray and Wilde's other literary output, as well as to the work of Walter Pater. Numerous illustrations subtly compliment Frankelÿs inferences. A fine contextualization of a major work of fiction profoundly interpreted, ultimately riveting. (Mar.)

From School Library Journal Grade 10 Up-"The Whole Story" format provides illustrations and annotations to the classic text. Ross's lively and sophisticated cartoons add interest, and historical information helps readers place the novel in proper context and gives insight into its characters. The problem with this attractive, glossy layout, however, is that the text and the quotes pulled from it are not always on the same page. Further, some illustrations and notations visually cut into the narrative and may distract readers. For example, a drawing appears on the first page along with the passage, "In the centre of the room, clamped to an upright easel, stood the full-length portrait of a young man of extraordinary personal beauty," but that quote does not appear until the second page of the story. Useful as a supplement to the original novel, but not a replacement for it.Karen Hoth, Marathon Middle/High School, FL Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

59 of 61 people found the following review helpful. No need to avoid Shakespeare anymore By David E. Levine I consider myself to be a reasonably literate individual but, I have always avoided Shakespeare since I cannot make sense of the text. But now, I have fianally read Macbeth because, with "No Fear Shakespeare," each left hand page is written in the original whereas the right hand page is a plain English translation. So now I know, that when a porter says "it makes him stand to and not stand to," he is not referring about someone standing up on his feet. Instead, it means that alcoholic drinks make a man have an erection but then, lose the erection. How true is that and how cool is it to be able to understand that? Seriously, Macbeth is a great tale of ambition, deception and conscience. Thanks to this innovative book, I was able to read the original, then, after reading each page, I referred to the translation so I could understand. It was fun to read lines in the original, try to work out what I thought it meant and then check whether I was right. I recommend this as a way finally read and appreciate Macbeth.

54 of 56 people found the following review helpful. Suits our needs By A Customer I won't even attempt to critique Shakespeare's work, as some have done here. I'm not reviewing MacBeth, but this particular version of it. As a homeschooling Mom with three highschool students, the only way we could get through Shakespeare's works is by having a copy of Shakespeare Made Easy on hand. As it is, we completed 5 plays this year - all done orally, with each of us taking several parts. While I think it's important that my kids read Shakespeare in it's original format (and they did), I had the Shakespeare Made Easy translation handy so that I could give simple, concise explanations whenever they just didn't "get it". I recommend these books for that purpose - not for the watered down versions of these classics, but to make them understandable to the average student who might otherwise find Shakespeare's works boring and a waste of time (as many students do).

45 of 46 people found the following review helpful. Best Yet! By D. Durkee I've been playing this in a regular senior English class. Many of the students are finally understanding the play. The actors in this cd do a wonderful job interpreting their lines. The Scottish accents are well done. Sound effects make it vivid. It's the best production I've found to date.

Why is retirement planning different for women? Women are completely comfortable talking about many “M-word” topics: their marriages, motherhood and their mothers, merlots and martinis, mammograms and menopause. But, bring up money and the conversations often screech to a halt. Ask how prepared a woman is for retirement and she can tell you the exact date when she wants to retire, but not how much money she’ll need for a 30-year retirement. In this thought-provoking, but non-traditional, fun approach to planning for a woman’s retirement, Marcia Mantell guides women through the key questions they’ll need to answer before they will be prepared to retire. In What’s the Deal with Retirement Planning for Women?, you’ll get • realistic perspectives on retirement in the new era, • a treasure trove of resources to get started, and • practical examples of how other women are dealing with redesigning and reinventing retirement. Ten key questions are discussed and you may be surprised by the answers! While no two women will have the same retirement or financial resources, there are common topics that each woman needs to address. While this book offers financial information, it also focuses on • how to start defining your future years, • how to use the skills of running your household to manage your retirement, and • why doing what you love will continue to be a key activity in retirement. It also provides a critical overview into Social Security, which is often the foundation of income for most women in retirement. This book should help you feel more confident and empowered to own your own retirement and future. It will give you a terrific roadmap for how to plan for the future you deserve and help you to make your retirement the best time of your life!

She has spent the past two decades talking to Baby Boomers to get a more in-depth view from the inside. Marcia presents to standing room only crowds of consumers who are looking for the “magic answer” to the question that keeps them up at night: Will I really have enough money to last through my retirement? Marcia interviews Baby Boomers frequently and shares their stories in her blog at BoomerRetirementBriefs.com. Unlike other financial books I have read, this book is easy to read, easy to relate to, and chock-full of resources that we all need to know about. I’m doing a great job saving for retirement, but Marcia’s book makes it clear that there is much more to be done before I’ll be ready to retire. She gets you thinking, keeps you laughing, and gives you some great documents where you can really map out what your retirement will be like.Randi Bussin

Easy-to-read financial primer By Craig Adamson Marcia has done a great job of capturing the spirit of many different conversations she has had with consumers and her research in educating and marketing to them -specifically women.I know Marcia personally so I can attest to her passion on the subject matter. She writes just like she talks -in a friendly, caring way, but also as a very knowledgeable person who is a bit frantic about the lack of attention American women are putting on this very important topic. This was a fun book for me to read because I can totally hear her voice from start to finish. So this is definitely not some mind-numbing financial tome. Not that she could write something weightier, its just that Marcia knows it is important to keep things light and fun so it doesn't scare her readers away from taking action. This is an easy-to-read and engaging starting point for a woman who has always promised her self she was "going to learn about this stuff one day."As an advisor, I know first-hand how often women tend to defer to their husbands on financial issues -especially on investments. Or worse, have purposely ignored retirement because it was easier to procrastinate by focusing more on running their household than taking stock of the future. Where it becomes emotional and scary for so many women is when they go through a divorce or health scare in their mid-to-late 50's. Reality instantly becomes their constant companion and worst enemy. Paralysis sets in if they don't already have a trusted advisor to work with. And their lack of confidence and basic knowledge in this area leaves them open to scams. This book is going to be most helpful to women who have always meant to make time to learn more or to start their retirement savings journey. The intent is to get you thinking and to motivate you to action, not embarrass you for lack of knowledge or throw up your hands in surrender. Stop with the excuses and read this book today. Even if you aren't a fast reader, this book won't take long to knock out. As I said before, Marcia is a warm person and it comes through in the way she writes. It will likely take an average reader 4 hours (if you break it up in 30 minutes a day for a week to eight days) to read it. If you are an avid reader like me you can do so much faster... I read it cover to cover on a 90 minute plane ride. This book is going to help a lot of well-meaning women begin making great decisions in 2015.

It's filled with messages that ring true and advice that is concrete and easy to follow. The book has messages for any woman who is managing money, whether for a household or from a first job, or a long-term career. We should all become financially literate and Marcia helps us get there.

Even when Peter Crane was a baby boy, with eyes the color of the chicory flowers that grow by the wayside along New England roads, and hair that rivaled the Blessed Damosel's in being "yellow like ripe corn," he was of an adventurous disposition. His innocent face was never so devoid of guile, his winning smile never so cherubic as when he remarked that he would "jes' run froo the front gate a minyit," and the next instant he was out of sight. Far afield his roving spirit led him, and much scurrying was needed on the part of nurse or mother to bring him back.

WELL-DONE PERIOD PIECE By drkhimxz While the behavior and expressions of love may sound quaint to many younger people today as will some of the stylistic devices, this is, nonetheless, a well-written, interesting murder mystery. What we know at the end of the situation setting portion of the book, is that the young hero, who had been on a vacation trip to Labrador with a couple of friends and a guide, was lost in a heavy snowstorm, had broken his leg in the fall, was closing his eyes peacefully for the final moments of life, and then....cut to his family and friends back in New York. They have been notified of his death and that the body could not be found. Along comes an impressive woman who in seance after seance provides convincing evidence to the bereft father and mother, that she is in touch with their son, on the other side; they speak with him, familiar parts of his clothing known to have been with him on the trip, are presented by his wraith in seances. Father writes a wildly best selling book, detailing his experiences and praising such practitioners to the sky. Then a murder takes place in the friendship group.I listened to the book using Kindle robot reading. It takes some getting used to, I am sure, for those who have listened to none or only a few books using the various software packages usable on the computer. I found it conveyed the story to me quite adequately, although one should not expect the voice-acting skills one finds in the live, professional actor, productions. These, however, are pretty expensive and probably most would want to borrow them from a library. For anyone accustomed to reading literature of any sort written before most of our current favorites were born, this should prove an enjoyable experience

Efforts to develop my own voice, and the voices of my patients after operations for cleft palate, aided by anatomical study, resulted in a plan for the focusing and development of the human voice quite different from any other yet published, or, so far as I know, yet proposed. This plan has proved so successful in my later life that I feel emboldened to offer it for the consideration of speakers and singers.

The author hopes that his ideas and discoveries will be used by teachers of singing.▲ Certainly, there is much to like in this classic work--the problem is, many of the key points are now obsolete, or now known to be false. Now, that doesn't mean the material is worthless--it just means outdated. When this book was written in 1911, the theories espoused here were probably well-received.▲ One should not dismiss the entire book as irrelevant or wrong. No, of course, that is not true. For example, I thought Chapter VI, general discussions about resonance, was very insightful. Using a wind instrument, such as the french horn, to illustrate the fact of resonance is a good point. Here's another one--the author points out the fallacy of thinking that the vocal folds themselves produce the power. "The tone produced by the vibrations alone of the two very small vocal bands must, in the nature of things, be very feeble." The experiments suggested by the author in this chapter are really excellent.▲ Probably the biggest problem is the author's emphasis on nasal resonance, discussed in detail in Chapter VII, "Head and Nasal Resonance." For example, "It is only through free nasal resonance that the coordinate resonance in the air sinuses above the nasal cavity and connected with it can be established." Now it is perfectly understandable that 100 years ago, scientists thought there was resonance in the head sinuses. Since it feels like there is, that's not a bad assumption--just a wrong one. For what we known currently on this subject, the works of Johan Sundberg, in particular, would be a good reference.▲ Similarly, the author is adamant that there are no registers. "Chest, middle, head, and all other registers are creations of false education." In 1911, that statement might have been credible, but is clearly false. The different muscles that are used for different registers has been well widely documented and proven by numerous scholars. See, for example, the works of the late Richard Miller.▼ In the Kindle edition, the links to exercises and illustrations appear to be missing. Not sure what the links were supposed to activate. There were no illustrations. I presume the illustrations and figures are present in other editions.▲ "Resonance in Singing and Speaking" was a great book--at that time. For an aspiring singer or voice teacher, it would be much better to read books by modern scholars, using science that is not 100 years dated. For example, the following scholarly works would be a good starting place:Richard Miller, The Structure of Singing: System and Art in Vocal TechniqueJohan Sundberg, The Science of the Singing Voice√ From an historical perspective, this book is still useful, and many of the theories are still valid. The problem is, many of them have been proven false. Excellent writing, just outdated.♫ A Review by Chris Lawson

Disappointing By Reader Hmmm, well, if you're going to sell a title that has exceeded copyright protection - especially one that can be found for free on the internet - shouldn't you AT LEAST include the illustrations and photos from the original source when the text refers to them repeatedly? I mean really! I bought this thinking it would be nice to have a hardcopy on hand for reference even if it costs a little money. Leaving out the illustrations and photos is a glaringly obvious case of not caring about the content of the original work much less the customer for this particular 'packaging' of the text.

This book does a brilliant job of explaining the various resonance chambers important for both speech and singing alike. Also, talks about misconceptions. The only negative point about this e-book is that images (e.g. throat, chest cavity) are missing and the explanation refers to them. That part is a bit inconvenient to read, but it's a bit technical, and I could do without the images as I skipped through it. The book is written by a Surgeon to help a patient or practitioner. But, I did not need all that technical detail. The rest of the explanation was enough for me as it lets you know what you are doing when you speak or sing, and gives an idea how you can make use of the resonance chambers or cavities for better speech and singing. Personally, I found the book useful.
