Ossian purports to be a translation of an epic cycle of Scottish poems from the early dark ages. Macpherson claimed that Ossian was based on an ancient Gaelic manuscript. There was just one problem. The existence of this manuscript was never established. In fact, unlike Ireland and Wales, there are no dark-age manuscripts of epic poems, tales, and chronicles and so on from Scotland. It isn't that such ancient Scottish poetry and lore didn't exist, it was just purely oral in nature. Not much of it was committed to writing until it was on the verge of extinction. In fairness, themes, characters and passages of Ossian are based on established Celtic and Scottish folklore. Much of the fourth volume of J.F. Campbell's massive Popular Tales of the West Highlands is devoted to tracking down Ossianic fragments in circulation prior to Macpherson, or elicited from illiterate Highland peasants who had never heard of Ossian. Macpherson is today considered the author of this work. The language of composition was probably English: As Campbell determined, Macpherson wasn't even particularly fluent in Gaelic. The work has literary merits, and historical importance. It resembles other Romantic era attempts at national epic-building such as the Finnish Kalevala; however the Kalevala is acknowledged to be based on years of ethnographic fieldwork by Elias Lönnrot. Lönnrot is now believed to have composed a few bridge portions of the Kalevala; but he didn't pull a great deal of the work out of thin air, as did Macpherson.

The praise goes to James MacPherson for having the guts to publish them under the name of a legendary Irish bard. I commend MacPherson for his literary efforts. OSSIAN remains worth reading today, even if few have heard of the collection. This digital edition could use a fresh update, but the current version is still worth the price by far.

Anthony Readers Jamie MacPherson set the Literary World on its colective ear when he published these works of Ossian, & in some circles, near 300 years later, they are still read and debated. BUT, this exact photocopy of the 1787 issue: was set by 'a drunken typsetter with a herd of sheep hurtling thru the print shop'. One(of many)examples:efTentially for essentially! I will grant that English is a living language & that much variation existed in circa 1787, but not to "thi$" extent. So unless you are gifted with the English language, & have a grasp of the grammar conventions of the 18th Century: this will be a hard go to read. For the "Dectective Monk" types out there, you would hurl yourselfs out a clean window,& onto a swept & waxed sidewalk; to read this. So for the Gifted & the willing to learn, this is a very good text. For the rest of humanity, find a proofread & corrected text(which will be a bit more money). "H pyee reeadding"

Caves were named(& bairns)for it, Napoleon carried a copy(small wonder he lost!) & ect. That is no recommendation; history is too full of books that inspire kooks. The fiction book was Supposed to be based on a original(which showed evidence of tampering, before it 'was lost'(how happy). Just to read the text, will show just what a fraud it was/is; and what real value it has beyound being the One Book that was at the fore-front of Early Scottish Nationalism, is Sum Zero. However, to understand the Modern Scottish Nationalism, this is the place to start. And that alone makes it worth the reading.
