*Adventure... Exotic... Romance... Danger...Passion* Inspired by Jane Austen's most alluring romantic couple, this modern adventure stars adaptations of characters from Pride and Prejudice and her other novels.Fitzwilliam Darcy is steel, rock-n-roll, and Tennessee whiskey. Elizabeth Bennet is orchids, opera, and peaches with cream. Thrown together they are physically and emotionally charged TNT, ready to explode!Elizabeth Bennet, a young woman hiding from living life to its fullest, finds herself willing to accept an untenable marriage arrangement solely for the sake of achieving her father's selfish aspiration to save the family's historic home. But even duty and obligation fail to hinder her inner conscience from spurring her to leave - to run - to escape before it's too late. Prompted by a cataclysmic event and the arrival of an attractive, enigmatic man, Liz is thrust into a dangerous liaison where her spirit learns to fly amidst international intrigue.Fitzwilliam Darcy was born into the wealth of Northern Virginia's world of refinement and competitive polo. When a horrific family event rocks his world and shatters his trust in women, he leaves everything behind, determined to never look back. Running from his past and the man he once was, he enters a world of danger, first as a Navy SEAL, then as a government-sanctioned assassin. After thirteen years fortified by his hurt and anger, carrying a career moniker "The Iceman," Darcy finds he still can't avoid his own conscience - beckoning him home to Pemberley, its demons and the man he was meant to be. Fate steps in when a beautiful woman suddenly appears at the end of his deadly rifle scope and he chooses not to take his signature kill shot.Experience adventure, lust, and danger as we burn rubber on the back of Darcy's motorcycle through Washington, D.C. and Mount Vernon, Virginia. We'll fly with our hero and heroine to play roulette in Monte Carlo and take the bullet train to Seville to tango in the moonlight. The island of Capri invites us to indulge before our final stop, Marrakech, Morocco where the exotic city of Arabian Nights brings us to our thrilling climax. Will this seemingly mismatched pair find the peace and the life they were both meant to live? Will "conscience" win out with Liz & Darcy finding happiness in one another's arms? As Darcy would say, "Don't be afraid. Get on... let's ride."Authors Note: Jane Austen wrote such wonderful characters, I borrowed their names and some of their characteristics to tell my own tale of hard-won, contemporary love.BE ADVISED: This story contains explicit sexual scenes.

Review Voted Favorite Pride & Prejudice Favorite Modern of 2015 by Margie Must Reads, Austenesque Reviews, and More Agreeably Engaged!"I cannot help but be impressed with this novel! The premise is so well-thought out, the characters are engaging and have depth, and the author's knowledge of how to write about espionage, terrorism, and technological warfare is most deserving of praise. I'm sure there were hours and hours of research and planning involved, and I applaud Ms. Gardiner for her efforts to make this story plausible, accessible, and real. I'm completely enamored with this author's style and the ingenious stories she skillfully crafts! I have never met her, but she is going to be a new favorite. This tale is more Ian Fleming than Jane Austen, but it's so darned much fun. Nearly all our favorite characters from P&P are there plus a scattering from other Austen novels. Although much of the action is serious, there is lots of humor, lots of action, lots of loving. There is a fair amount of rather graphic sex which would annoy me something fierce if it were a Regency story. For Ian Fleming, on the other hand, it was fairly tame and didn't seem out of place. My favorite scene being the episode on the train. And she doesn't split her infinitive!

I absolutely love this author's writing. She has a way with words that draws you into the story from the first. Every scene seems to jump off the page as you race from one chapter to another eager to find out what's coming next. I highly recommend this book and look forward to more publications by this author. Thanks so much, Cat, for all of your hard work and for such a great read! Note: R- rated for language and explicit sex.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Double O Darcy! By Meredith (Austenesque Reviews) TYPE OF AUSTENESQUE NOVEL: Modern Adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, Mature AudiencesSETTING: Modern-day – Virginia, Monte Carlo, and MoroccoSYNOPSIS: Fitzwilliam Darcy, an ex-SEAL working as an assassin for a secret organization contracted by the CIA, is on his next mission to take out a man in Virginia who is creating a very harmful technology that, once sold to our enemies could cripple the U.S. and send us back to the Dark Ages. The target Darcy is sent to eliminate is an unassuming and depressed man and when Darcy sees the tender kiss placed on the man’s temple by whom he assumes to be his daughter, Darcy gets a gut-feeling about this bad-luck mission that his conscience doesn’t allow him to ignore…MAIN CHARACTERS: Fitzwilliam Darcy, Liz Bennet, Thomas Bennet, Henry Crawford, Jane Bennet, Bill Collins, Rick Fitzwilliam, Charlie Bingley, Caroline BingleyWHAT I LOVED:- The Name is Bond…Jane Bond: This has to be the first time I’ve read an Austenesque spy-thriller and I loved it! I’m not that big into James Bond, but I do love a good story with plenty of intrigue and adventure. And this premise with its secret missions, clever covers and ops, and travel to distant locations is one exhilarating ride!- Wonderfully Constructed: I cannot help but be impressed with this novel! The premise is so well-thought out, the characters are engaging and have depth, and the author’s knowledge of how to write about espionage, terrorism, and technological warfare is most deserving of praise. I’m sure there were hours and hours of research and planning involved, and I applaud Ms. Gardiner for her efforts to make this story plausible, accessible, and real.- A Different Take on Lizzy: We all have seen Mr. Bennet have a close relationship with his favorite daughter, Elizabeth – well, what if that relationship was a little more dependent and damaging. In this tale Mr. Bennet is a broken man suffering from depression and obsessive behaviors. Lizzy is all he has left and he manipulates her concern and compassion for him into compelling her to stay with him and live her life on his terms. I thought this was an interesting portrayal of Elizabeth and a pretty believable slant for her relationship with her father. On the outside she is demure and dutiful, but she keeps her inner desires for adventure, freedom, and escape to herself.- A Damaged, Dark, and Dangerous to Know Darcy: First of all…Darcy as a badass assassin who drives a Harley? (C’mon…can he BE any hotter?!?) Smoldering sexiness aside there is a lot of depth and development with this Darcy. Not only do readers learn all about why Darcy has a heart of ice, chosen such a dangerous profession, and holds firm to the belief that all women are lying poisonous vipers, but they understand how his past experiences and emotional baggage shaped him into the man he is today. I love a complex Darcy, and I found it captivating to witness him overcome his past, hist pain, and his vulnerability in this premise.- It’s The Little Things: The reoccurring theme of serpents and snakes, Darcy’s interest in horses, Lizzy’s passion for orchids – such unique touches. I loved the nicknames everyone had for each other – Lakmé, Rambo, Medusa, Iceman. And I thought the Spotify list was awesome (see my favorite tracks below). These little touches and motifs infuse the story with personality and clever connections.WHAT I WASN’T TOO FOND OF:- Na-Da! Couldn’t think of anything if I tried…WARNING: Recommended for Mature Audiences because of the use of profanity and intimate content.CONCLUSION:I’m completely enamored with this author’s style and the ingenious stories she skillfully crafts! I’m a big fan of creativity and I feel that Ms. Gardiner’s works just ooze with buckets of creativity! Sure, at times it is a bit of a departure from the Jane Austen and her world, but what a thrilling ride! I definitely recommend this searing hot read for fans of modern adaptations who count Fitzwilliam Darcy Rock Star and The Muse as amongst their favorite Austenesque reads.Austenesque Reviews

The first questions most people ask when starting a new job are When do I get paid? and How much? They’re questions conditioned in us from the time we are kids doing our first odd jobs. And, we ask every single time we start new employment. Yet many of us forget about these questions when we begin working in a multilevel / network marketing / home-based business. Then we find our heads spinning, wondering how everything fits together. How does this happen? Well, most of the time- in Young Living- it’s the women who jump into the business first. In other words, guys rarely look at the compensation plan because it’s not “their thing.” As well, the fact is that most people who enroll as wholesale members with Young Living and later “do the business” never intended to do anything more than simply use the oils or just sell enough to “fund their habit.” As such, as the business starts growing and things start humming along, they find themselves with lots of action and little information. The compensation plan is complex- even if clear. In this Field Guide we’ll walk through it. You’ll learn… * How much work this will really take * How to jump-start a business that is new or has stalled for a bit * Steps to take to become financially free- or reach any other financial milestone between where you are and where you want to be * The power of residual income streams * Little-known programs Young Living has created that accelerate your success * How to understand terms like Unilevel, Shares, Generations, as well as the eight ways to make money as a Young Living wholesale member * What other people make “doing the business,” how much they work, and just how profitable this can be for you If you treat Young Living like a hobby, you’ll have fun and get paid like a hobby. If, however, you want to work the process like a legitimate business, the opportunity stands before you to be rewarded quite well. The Field Guide to the Comp Plan helps you pull all of the info together and see the possibilities clearly. Best of all, you'll walk away with practical steps to navigate your path.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. it motivates me By Stephanie This is the first book I have read of it's kind, I really thought of it as a guide. I am not sure that I could compare it to anything else and would be hard pressed to just give it five stars. The book was clear and direct. Before this book, I didn't think I could be an author because I never actually written anything meant for others to read. I was scared to be honest. But after I read this book, I figured out what my obstacles are through her exercises and the steps I was missing in creating my own process. The biggest impact were the examples. They helped settle my internal struggles with why I would even write the book I think I should, but thought I couldn't. I can see this series being a great success for it's author and those who read (and follow) the steps to being one step closer to being a first time or improved author.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Practical, actionable advice By Allyson This book is a must read for anyone who wants to reach their target audience. It really delves into the process and approach to writing something that will influence the audience. It is an easy read with practical, applicable advice. I think this is a great read for people that have something to say but don't know how to start, are stuck or are worried about getting stuck. After reading I feel much more confident about my ability to write because I have an action plan in this text.Look forward to more from this author!

By Francia Noble As a new writer, I was blown away by the tough, in your face questions that Lori Anne Rising posed to the reader. Thankfully, these were some of the similar type questions I had already been asking of myself. Coming from an educational background, I could appreciate the the exercises at the end of each chapter. If a writer is honest with themselves, I believe the exercises will help focus (which we all struggle to do) the direction of the book and to embrace the internal creative process that is occurring. Thanks Lori!

Best PDF Ebook Online This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things: (Parenting. Marriage. Madness), by Clint Edwards

Clint Edwards has no idea what he's doing raising the son and two daughters he has with his loving and ever patient wife, Mel. The truth, of course, is that no parent knows what he or she is doing--not even Mel--and that's part of the fun as well as the horror. The short chapters either recount specific stories from the front lines ("The Day We Caught Our Kids Looking At Their Butt Holes," "She Sent Me to the Store for Feminine Hygiene Products") or take the form of lists--numbered observations, warnings, or words of wisdom ("5 things I Never Should Have Said To My Pregnant Wife," "10 Contradictions That Make Me Want to Run From My Minivan And Into The Woods"). Edwards is invariably funny, wry, and self-deprecating. Parenting and marriage, as he describes them, are humbling, in both the worst (lots of poop and vomit) and best (personal growth) ways. If you are a parent, husband, wife, or thinking about any of these roles, this book is for you. It will make you laugh. It will make you think. It will make you cry. Sometimes all three at the same time.

Review "This guy gets it." - Good Morning America  "This book has a chapter in it called, 'The Day We Caught Our Kids Looking at Their Buttholes.' If that doesn't get you to buy this book and read it right now, then I don't think we can be friends." - Scary Mommy"Clint Edwards brings real humor to the unsavory parts of childcare..." - Mashable "I always know, when I'm about to read a piece by Clint, that I'll end up nodding my head in agreement..." - The Washington Post  "Clint is one of my favorite dad voices today ... Fun, insightful collection of stories for dads...and moms By Matt Raymond I recommend Clint's humorous collection of stories to fathers (and dads-to-be), and also to moms who want to better understand their partners. Edwards spills his thoughts and heart onto the pages - and while he's funny, what's more impressive to me is his authenticity and vulnerability. To his credit (and his family's), he gives you an unfiltered look into the joy and madness of raising young children. As the dad of a 3 year-old and newborn, I nodded and laughed along with the author, remembering experiences and anticipating those to come. On many occasions I'd read passages aloud to my wife who responded often with "See?" "I'm not the only one" and knowing smirks and eye rolls. And while Clint's kids are often at the center of the craziness, it's his interactions with his wife, Mel, that took center stage for me and provided the most meaningful and thought-provoking anecdotes. The author's experiences made me reflect on my own marriage - its evolution as my wife and I became parents, and how we can work together to (to paraphrase Edwards) change and grow together rather than grow apart. Also - PEOPLE, it's $2.99 on Kindle! Just get it! You'll be a better dad, mom, husband or wife after reading this book.

Early on, Clint and his wife switch roles, and while I laughed (a lot), I also found myself discussing it with my husband and crying when he told me how much he appreciates what I do for our family. It was so neat to have a book open a dialogue like that. I read parts aloud to my non reader husband, and he actually asked to read any other funny parts I stumbled across. I highly recommend this book (but be warned you'll find yourself staying up late to read!)

This is a fun collection of stories, and Clint speaks the Truth... in a way that makes you laugh out loud until you notice that "laughing at" has craftily turned into "laughing with"... and at times, crying with and swearing with a little bit, too. Just finished the book on a flight, and I actually LOL'd. A lot. My seatmates were pretty interested in what I was reading. So my only caution to readers is: be aware of your surroundings... you will not get away with reading this book in a place where you are expected to keep your composure!Clint's a clever writer. His honest, hilarious story-telling makes me smile, and think, and then just give in to it... it's real life he's capturing. I suppose we all live it and are usually just relieved to survive it and move on, but Clint has the gift of taking note and sharing it in a way that we can all GET it just a little better.I'm hoping Clint will keep writing - I will keep reading!!!

During the past few decades, private equity (PE) has attracted considerable attention from investors, practitioners, and academicians. In fact, a substantial literature on PE has emerged. PE offers benefits for institutional and private wealth management clients including diversification and enhancement of risk-adjusted returns. However, several factors such as liquidity concerns, regulatory restrictions, and the lack of transparency limit the attractiveness of some PE options to investors. The latest volume in the Financial Markets and Investments Series, Private Equity: Opportunities and Risks offers a synthesis of the theoretical and empirical literature on PE in both emerging and developed markets. Editors H. Kent Baker, Greg Filbeck, Halil Kiymaz and their co-authors examine PE and provide important insights about topics such as major types of PE (venture capital, leveraged buyouts, mezzanine capital, and distressed debt investments), how PE works, performance and measurement, uses and structure, and trends in the market. Readers can gain an in-depth understanding about PE from academics and practitioners from around the world.Private Equity: Opportunities and Risks provides a fresh look at the intriguing yet complex subject of PE. A group of experts takes readers through the core topics and issues of PE, and also examines the latest trends and cutting-edge developments in the field. The coverage extends from discussing basic concepts and their application to increasingly complex and real-world situations. This new and intriguing examination of PE is essential reading for anyone hoping to gain a better understanding of PE, from seasoned professionals to those aspiring to enter the demanding world of finance.

You know what they say about best-laid plans… After a disastrous thirty-first birthday party where she gets stood-up by a man she isn’t supposed to be dating, Peri McKenna decides it’s time to change what hasn’t been working—which is pretty much everything. Her love life is going nowhere fast, she’s bored to tears by a job that makes her the office pariah, and the lifelong junk food addiction that used to be somewhat quirky is now positively problematic. To top it all off, her newly-purchased home is falling apart and wishful thinking hasn’t done much to fix the leaky roof. It’s time be an adult now that she’s officially ‘thirty-something.’ But when the first step of Peri’s self-improvement plan backfires, she starts to wonder if change might be overrated. Enter Milo Preston, an up-and-coming chef who’s in town to take over a local restaurant. When Peri and Milo begin working together, she finds it hard to ignore his easy charm and captivating emerald-green eyes. Since Milo is her best friend’s estranged brother, Peri has to keep reminding herself that he is completely off-limits. As they grow closer, Milo introduces Peri to new foods, the joy (and pain) of jogging, and makes her think her luck might finally be turning. But when the past catches up with them, Peri finds herself back at square one. Will she be able to sort herself out—or will the roof cave in on her once and for all?

By BrainyBlonde I became an instant fan of Cat Lavoie’s when I read her first book, Breaking the Rules, and am like a kid on Christmas morning whenever she has a new release. Peri in Progress is the best gift the author could have given her readers! Funny, poignant, and swooningly romantic, I enjoyed every word and was sorry when the book was over. Sequel please!Peri McKenna is a very relatable heroine in that she’s far from perfect and is in dire need of a life makeover when the story opens. We’ve all been there, right? Knowing we need to make a change (changes plural in Peri’s case as pretty much every area of her life is a disaster), but unsure of how to go about it or even where to start. When she’s disappointed by her birthday, her pseudo boyfriend, and her job, Peri decides to stop talking about improving herself and just do it! Soon, she’s breaking bad habits, trying new things, and expanding her horizons both professionally and personally.I don’t want to give away too much about Peri’s journey, but I will say that it was very entertaining, as well as inspiring. I was really rooting for Peri to find the happiness and confidence she was missing and felt proud of her every time she made a step toward achieving one of her goals. An unexpected help to Peri on her road to self-improvement is the very dreamy Milo Preston, a talented chef who gives her a career opportunity and steers her toward a healthier lifestyle. I loved how this relationship blossomed in a very organic and believable way. It’s not smooth sailing for them, of course, as Milo is Peri’s best friend’s brother (and Elsa has some serious unresolved issues with him) and the handsome chef is suspiciously cagey about his past. As always, Cat Lavoie is a master at weaving together all the different elements in her books and creating characters whose story arcs are dynamic, compelling, and quite often surprising. Grab a copy of Peri in Progress and dive in; you’ll be glad you did!I received a copy of Peri in Progress in exchange for an honest review.

By Celia Kennedy This is a fun, fast read by Ms. Lavoie. We meet Peri McKenna on her thirty first birthday, and though she survived turning thirty, is barely surviving turning thirty-one. As a result of a rather underwhelming year in her life, Peri decides it is time for epic changes. EPIC. As she sets the changes in motion she soon discovers the fall-out of some of her decisions. With no choice but to proceed, Peri continues to sweep the cobwebs out of her life, and for that I truly loved her. She doesn't question her decision to make major, she works her way through her pain and her enormous list.Just past halfway I thought, "All the pieces are in place... something's gonna happen." And that something is spectacular. Ms. Lavoie delivers an absolutely charming book that one can completely disappear into. It's the kind of book you keep on your shelf, so that you can pull it out and read it over and over. A definite must read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another hit! By Kimberly Long Author Cat Lavoie has done it again and when I say "it" I mean she wrote a heartfelt, humorous, and difficult to put down chick lit novel. Like Roxy and Zoey before her, main character Peri is a protagonist ripe for character development and develop she does - from her taste in food (and men), finding her passion in career (and men), and learning to stand up for herself. The road was not without bumps, but I love a book packed with conflict. Another thing in common with all of the author's books is a moment when the main character humiliates herself to the point where, as the reader, my stomach aches in sympathy and my heart pounds wondering how she will pick herself up again. her characters feel real - like girls I would be friends with - and as my friends, I root for them to find their happily ever after. I truly loved this book and the author is on my "auto-read" list.

Outside the bedroom the night was black and still. The small rain fell too softly to be heard in the garden; not a leaf stirred in the airless calm; the watch-dog was asleep, the cats were indoors; far or near, under the murky heaven, not a sound was stirring. Inside the bedroom the night was black and still.

His books are fabulous, in part, due to his realistic view of humanity. Lived in an era when the distinctions between good and evil weren't nearly so blurred. The ending certainly had me fooled. Just take a little time with this entry. You will be rewarded.

Since I play no mean part in the events of this chronicle, a few words concerning my own history previous to the opening of the story I am about to tell you will surely not be amiss, and they may help you to a better understanding of my narrative. To begin with an unimportant fact—unimportant, that is, to you—my name is Malcolm François de Lorraine Vernon. My father was cousin-german to Sir George Vernon, at and near whose home, Haddon Hall in Derbyshire, occurred the events which will furnish my theme.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Love & intrigue during the Elizabethan era By A. Woman From the author of When Knighthood Was In Flower comes another romance involving the Tudors. Our narrator is Malcolm Vernon, a Frenchman who has followed the doomed Queen Mary from France to Scotland. When the winds of Fate start to change, Malcom hightails it to England to hole up at Haddon Hall with his English cousins. This is where we meet Dorothy. Of course she's beautiful, clever, strong, stubborn and reckless. With a tip of the hat to Shakespeare, Dorothy has fallen in love with John Manners, son of her father's worst enemy. There's a lot of secret wooing going on between these two. Perhaps too much wooing. There's not enough action. Not THAT kind of action! But Major could have thrown in a sword fight or two, or maybe a dangerous encounter with highwaymen. Something. There's a little bit of drama at the end when Dorothy allows her jealousy to place everyone's lives at risk, but it's not much of a payoff. If you want action with your romance, I recommend The Helmet of Navarre by Bertha Runkle.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Pretty Good Classic! By thornfaith This book is loosely based on a true story. This book covers the life of Dorothy Vernon as seen through the eyes of her cousin Malcolm François de Lorraine Vernon. Her cousin weaves his own life in with that of Dorothy's, but we mostly hear of Dorothy and her love interest John Manners. The Manners home and the Vernon home are hated enemies. But Dorothy and John fall in love at first sight. This is the tale of their journey to get past the family feud and find happiness.

A Classic Work by Plato By Joseph Hill Crito was an elderly friend of Socrates who tried to persuade Socrates to escape from the prison where he was to be executed for the crime of "corrupting the youth" of Athens. This ancient story is presented by Plato in dialogue format, which makes it easy to follow (it is an English translation of the original Greek text, which I taught my students to read during my faculty years at Geneva College). All truly educated people should be acquainted with this classic story of Socrates' fidelity to his core principles. I highly recommend it.

Carl Menger, Friedrich Wieser and Eugen Bohm-Bawerk are acknowledged as pioneers in the development of neoclassical economics, as well as being recognized as the founders of the Austrian School of Economics. Neoclassical Microeconomic Theory examines their contribution and compares it with the other branches of neoclassical economics that emerged between the 1870's and 1930's. The author begins by exploring the initial stimulus provided by Carl Menger's work, and then demonstrates how the views of Menger, Weiser and Bohm-Bawerk complement one another and the tensions exhibited between them: the scope and method of economics; theories of choice; price theory; competition; entrepreneurship; and capital formation and distribution.

Deceptive title but contrasts Austrians within Marginalists By Zander Haberstaft The title of this book gives you the impression that this is a study of "Neoclassical Microeconomic Theory" -that it is not. What the book is is actually something better than that. This book is a comprehensive analysis between the Austrian economic movement within the context of the Marginalist movement within the late 19th century. The book compares the Austrians against each other, for example comparing Menger to Bohm-Bawerk, Schumpeter and Wieser, and seeing the differences between their thought. It also goes a step further by comparing the convergence and disagreements that the Austrians doctrines have with other Neoclassical 'Marginalist' authors such as Jevons, Marshall and Walras. It also uses the mathematical models of Von Neumann and Morgenstern as well as Joan Robinson to compare to all of this. The book also goes into the second generation of Austrian economists like Mises, Hayek, and Kirzner for more comparison and analysis. The most amazing thing about this book is the author's ability to link as well as compare and contrast so many different economic doctrines and put it in the context of the entire discipline. The author doesn't reach any really earth shattering conclusions but his analysis is as entertaining as it is informative. The one important conclusion that the author makes is that the Austrians had important contributions to Marginalist/Neoclassical thought, but that ultimately the Neoclassical and Austrian disciplines went their different ways even before Von Neumann and Morgenstern's work. Marginalism was the only historical convergence point of Neoclassical and Austrian economics.

Gibbon offers an explanation for why the Roman Empire fell, a task made difficult by a lack of comprehensive written sources, though he was not the only historian to tackle the subject. Most of his ideas are directly taken from what few relevant records were available: those of the Roman moralists of the 4th and 5th centuries.

The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire Vol. 1, by Edward Gibbon

Review ''I set out upon...Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire [and] was immediately dominated both by the story and the style . . . I devoured Gibbon. I rode triumphantly through it from end to end and enjoyed it all.'' --Winston Churchill ''[Gibbon] stood on the summit of the Renaissance achievement and looked back over the waste of history to ancient Rome, as from one mountain top to another.'' --Christopher Dawson, independent scholar, historian, and author ''Edward Gibbon, in The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, has always been my cynosure . . . Gibbon's mind was surely the most powerful and most lucid one that has appeared so far in the whole distinguished company of Western historians . . . Gibbon [produced] a masterpiece of historical research, construction, and writing which had no superior in its own genre in any literature.'' --Arnold Toynbee, historian and New York Times bestselling author

About the Author EDWARD GIBBON (1737-1794), an English historian and Member of Parliament, had little formal education. He went to Oxford, but was forced to leave when he converted to Roman Catholicism. His family then sent him to Lausanne, where he was reconverted to Protestantism. His most important work, The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, was published in six volumes between 1776 and 1788.

Considered the most scholarly collection of Gibbon's work By Drake-by-the-Lake I do not recommend buying an edition of "The Decline and Fall" based upon price alone, because for many reasons, which will become clearer to you after reading this complicated and scholarly work, the editions vary in content and price, nor does price alone guarantee quality. For many hours prior to purchasing, I researched the numerous editions offered by different publishers and read reviews, and discovered a consensus among Gibbon fans in favor of Womersley's unabridged edition, in part because it includes a complete and unmodernized text, Gibbon's own comments and notes, and his famous Vindication, a final and thorough answer to scurrilous critics of his time. All of this is provided at a quite reasonable price, considering the length of the work (in excess of 1,300 pages), albeit in soft cover which I find makes a book easier to read, if slightly less durable.I recommend buying this new edition from Amazon, instead of the used editions also offered here, because many of them, I discovered after investigating, are not the same as this one I am reviewing (ISBN 0-14-043393-7, which is Volume I). Like I said, there are many editions of Gibbon's masterpiece floating about, old and new, of varying quality and content. The vendors' failure to disclose the ISBN in their descriptions prohibits any purchase by the discriminating. Just pay the seventeen or so bucks for the new book, which is dirt cheap for a work of this magnitude. There should be no need to defend Gibbon nor his work, which is simply the best I have yet read. I loved history as a boy, even while reading the simple and often stupid books offered in school. Imagine how much more I enjoyed history written by such a master of prose as Gibbon, the most thorough, meticulous and honest historian I have yet encountered. We owe a debt of gratitude to a historian who has perused enormous quantities of ancient texts in Latin and Greek and other languages, such as would confound the vast majority of readers today, and with his formidable powers of intellect, analyzed their veracity, by comparing one against the other, and judged keenly of their worth. Gibbon had for his time a vast encyclopedic knowledge, for by his own admission, he devoted his life to reading. Gibbon's love was not among humans, but among books. He possessed an excellent understanding of government, which is the more understandable when you discover he served as a Member of Parliament for a number of years. His grasp of military science is explained in part by his service in the militia as an officer. To all these things, we must add an innate, profound understanding of human nature. Why bother with Gibbon? Why not read the original, the ancient and medieval writers, from whom Gibbon based his work? That is a good question that I asked myself. Here is the answer. We cannot trust the ancient writers to be truthful or accurate in every event. For one thing, they sometimes contradict each other, which means one or both are lying. Also, they leave out important details, which can be pieced together by circumstantial evidence, if you have found it by exhaustive research. This is where Gibbon comes in. He has performed exhaustive research that consumed a large portion of his scholarly and reflective lifetime. Gibbon is no fool, and never succumbs to the usual vices of enthusiasm or its opposite, cynicism. He is calm, rational, penetrative; just the guide and the mentor you want. He never takes an ancient historian at face value without considering their motives, prejudices, passions, and even their personal histories. Gibbon has studied not just the history, but the historians, and the history of the historian's countries. Not only has Gibbon accumulated and summarized the ancient and medieval texts, but interpreted and analyzed with his considerable deductive powers, to form a whole that is greater than the parts. Thus a novice does better with Gibbon than with the original. Gibbon's copious notes explain where has made interpretations, leaving you free to form different conclusions, should you desire. Some reviewers are peeved that Gibbon suffers an opinion that disagrees with their own, and for this reason alone, they degrade his work. I experience the same treatment by those who are alarmed that my reviews have an actual opinion instead of being a rubber stamp marked "PERFECTION". If this intolerant philosophy were carried on, then no-one should dare express an unseasonable opinion of anything at all, and we should all become a tribe of dullards. Of course Gibbon expresses many opinions, some the inevitable product of his country, class and times; and this is the mark of intellectual honesty. You should never read without a critical mind, and should be prepared to disagree with an author on some issues, as I do with Gibbon, while agreeing with him on others. I especially favor his ideas concerning the causes and effects of the rise of Christianity, many of which can be observed today.Look to find a better history than this, in any language, written during any time since the advent of letters. Look far and wide, as long as you like... and then revisit Gibbon, and see whether you have yet found an equal.

A review written in 1844 By Slioch Found in a letter dated February 13 1844 from my great-great-great-uncle George Mackenzie in India to his sister Alice in Scotland: "Have you ever read Gibbon's Decline & Fall of the Roman Empire? I am very fond of it for many reasons. It is a grand book and to read it always makes me feel as if my life extended thousands instead of tens of years and as if I could trace out the revolutions of Empires. It is beautifully written and the English of it is to my taste particularly elegant, and except where Gibbon's judgement was obscured by his prejudice, it is true as history can be. His reasonings from the great events which he relates are generally speaking very true and I have heard that there is hardly a better guide for a politician than that history. What an immensely long duration the time of it is - from the year 90 after Christ till the year 1490 or thereabouts in fact almost down to our own times. It is a great ornament to my bookcase and I often read it & prefer it to any novel whatsoever." So the 5 stars are on behalf of Uncle George who sadly died later in 1844 aged 25.

Blankenship Well, after more than a year of off and on reading I finally finished the first volume of Gibbon's vast chronicle and only have five massive books to go. All in all it has been a wonderful journey, tedious at times, but wonderful! This first volume was first published in 1776 and now, after over 200 years still stands as one of the great pillars in the cannon of Western Literature and of course is still a framework used by historians even to this day. There are of course three aspects of this work that need to be considered. The first of course is the history. Gibbon is considered by many as the first modern historian. He broke new ground (more about that later), and gives us a very good view of the Roman Empire as seen through the eyes of a man of his time. Secondly, this is most certainly a literary work of no mean quality. It is actually an absolute gem; a work of art is words. Third, there is the history of the history; the placing of Gibbons work as a historical event within itself, which is sometimes overlooked. Now shear volumes have been written concerning this early study of the Roman culture, both critical and laudatory. I have great doubts that anything I say here will add to this mound of observations which have been gathering since the ink dried on the first printing of the work. I can only give you, the reader, my personal perspectives; keeping in mind that I am not in anyway a historian, theologian nor literary master. No, I am just a common `good old boy,' living in the hills that likes to read, loves history and enjoys a reading challenge.I have a bound set of these books on my bookshelf and I must admit that they sat there for a couple of years. I would stare at them now and then, fondle them at times late at night, but through shear intimidation of the size, kept putting it off and off. Years ago I did the same thing with Will Durant's massive, multi-volume `The Story of Civilization' before I followed the advice of the shoe commercial..."Just do it." I have never regretted that. Much the same is holding true for Gibbon's work; I decided to "just do it."Before I go on with the book review, I have some personal suggestions, if I may be so bold, as to the approach is reading this work. First, get over the magnitude of the mass of words found here. Take this first volume is small doses. I will not lie to you; the reading of this first volume is hard word, especially for someone like me with limited intellectual abilities and who is woefully lacking in formal education in this field. Let not this distract you though. You need not have a wonderful educational background or bright and shinning intellect to learn; to come to appreciate the essence of this work. Secondly, when you first start, take the work and break it down into small sections. I would sometimes take an hour just of read and savor a single paragraph, reading it over and over again. The arcane language; the convoluted and complex sentence and paragraph structure (May I use the term "mulifarious?"), will suddenly pop for you (hopefully), and will be like candy to your eye and mind. I further broke the work down into sections, actually taking them out of order. Indeed, I started reading this volume by beginning with the famous, or infamous, depending on how you look at it, Chapters 15 and 16. (More about this later). To continue, I would also, unless you are already pretty familiar with the chronological history of the Roman Empire, suggest that you have a good outline, a simple outline, of Roman history available. The plethora of rulers, gods, players, etc., can be a bit overwhelming and I found myself quickly lost trying to keep all the players straight. Thank goodness for google and Wikipedia...both were a tremendous help!I would also encourage you to give the work, as to the writing, a chance. At first, like me, many will find the style as was used in this era difficult to follow. Fear not though, as you read it will begin to flow and suddenly you will find yourself absolutely delighted...or not. If not, then it would probably be best to drop the book and go on to something else...each of us is quite different you know.It is quite interesting to note that vestiges of Gibbons work are alive and well even to this day. I happen to be in the process of reading two works at this time (concurrently), by Charles Freeman...A.D. 381: Heretics, Pagans, and the Dawn of the Monotheistic State and his previous work, The Closing of the Western Mind: The Rise of Faith and the Fall of Reason These are very nice and well written books and I am enjoying each and learning much. But when you get right down to it, from what I have read so far in these two works, we are getting a very strong dose of Gibbon, warmed over by Freeman. (I must state that Freeman is much easier to read...a delight, as a matter of fact).I think that one of the (from a historical aspect) things I appreciate the most about Gibbons work is that he was one of the fist historians that treated the writings of the Catholic Church as secondary documents rather than primary. This had not been done all that much before as the Church pretty well had a lock on things; not only religion, but history and science also. This was a bold step on Gibbons part and he certainly took a beating for it at the time...still is, come to think of it. Had Gibbons written what he wrote just a few years sooner, changes are pretty good he would have been fried or toasted. Anyway, in my opinion, for what it is worth, this was a good thing and certainly could, in my mind, be considered intellectual progress weather or not you agree with him.Was it worth the time I took to read this work? From my point of view and considering my needs; yes! Will I read the rest of the volumes? Well, I will attempt, although at my age and considering my reading speed, it is quite problematic as to weather or not I will finish them.NOTE: It should be noted that this entire work...all six volumes, can be downloaded to your Kindle for free. This is a good thing. I have not done this yet as I have the printed versions here, but I did take a brief look on a friend's Kindle. These down loads are good, but the quality is not the best and there are a few pages missing here and there...but hey, they are free so you cannot complain too much, you know. I have so many books downloaded in my little reading machine I need to do some catch-up before I continue.Don BlankenshipThe Ozarks
