I was only a young fellow when these things began to happen among us, but I remember very well the morning when it first came out about the Bewick carrier. He was postman, too, but had got permission to keep a horse and cart so that he might make a good little bit by fetching parcels and orders from town. Town to us meant East Dene, and Bewick, to which Harry went, lay away to the east among the woods and hills. It was a lonesome place, Bewick, and, indeed, is still, though now they have got a railway coming within eight miles or so. But the mystery of the Moat Wood happened before there was any talk of railways.

Deep Moat Grange, by S. R. Crockett

About the Author S. R. (Saumel Rutherford) Crockett was a Scottish novelist who wrote over 40 works in the Kailyard School fashion, a style of writing developed in the late 1800s as a reaction against coarse representations of Scottish life. Crockett s contemporaries in the Kailyard School included J. M. Barrie, George MacDonald, and Ian Maclaren. Crockett s most popular work, The Raiders, captures the excitement and anxiety of Galloway smugglers. The Black Douglas was credited by J. R. R. Tolkien as an influence on his development of the character Sauron in his Lord of the Rings trilogy. S. R. Crockett died in France in 1914.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. English village mystery, with romance and gothic elements By Cheryl This was a good English village mystery, told from the point of view of an 18 year old boy. The story has bits of humor, interesting characters, romance, and some gothic elements. The mystery begins with Joe and his friend Elsie finding the empty blood-spattered mail cart, still being pulled by a horse. The mail carrier's body is nowhere to be found, and the incident reminds people of other strange disappearances in the area. This book has an ancient manor house, secret tunnels, hidden rooms, murder, kidnapping, and madness. Joe's often humorous narration prevents the story from becoming too dark. Interesting, unique, and highly recommended.
