1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Spanish Chest: still a fun read after all these years. By Maureen K. Adler I first read this book in middle school, (back in the mid 20th century!) but never forgot it. I guess Ms. Brown was writing for children, and from what few others of hers that I have read, her work is uneven. But I bought this one as a typed and printed copy (Not very good, too many errors) and then got one on my Kindle (that is a good copy) and then finally got an original 1930 book with most of the illustrations. They used to use 'tipped in' illustrations, meaning that they'd literally glue the pictures in one by one, between pages. But the story is fascinating, at least to me. It is set in one of the "Channel Islands" meaning, the English Channel--the Isle of Jersey. I guess Guernsey and Jersey have totally different cultures though they are close to each other. The story: a family from America arrives to spend the winter in this mild-winter climate. One of the children, a teenage boy, has a heart defect and is limited in what he can do, but his mind is active and he soon uncovers a mystery: evidently there is a centuries-old legend that Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed at the home of a prominent member of the local gentry, but no proof exists. He accidentally uncovers a hint that the legend is true, and the plot unfolds. There are all the elements that make for good kid--and adult--fiction: a bit of romance, unusual geographical characteristics of an exotic locale, dogs, horses, caves, treasure hunting, and more. Though the book is old fashioned, it has plenty to recommend it. If they still made movies of mild, cozy adventures, it would make a good one.
