Likewise By Glenn Russell Ion is a very short Platonic dialogue between Socrates and a rhapsode by the name of Ion who specializes in reciting the poetry of Homer. The dialogue explores the nature of poetic and artistic inspiration in a most playful way. If you are interested in literature and the arts, you will really enjoy. Likewise, if you haven’t read any Plato, this is a great place to start. To offer a taste, here are a few snatches of the dialogue along with my brief reflections. Sidebar: all of my statements are, in a way, questions, not to be taken as definitive answers; scholars and philosophers have been debating the details of Plato’s thought for over 2000 years.SOCRATES: I often envy the profession of a rhapsode, Ion; for you have always to wear fine clothes, and to look as beautiful as you can is a part of your art. Then, again, you are obliged to be continually in the company of many good poets; and especially of Homer, who is the best and most divine of them; and to understand him, and not merely learn his words by rote, is a thing greatly to be envied. ---------- A stroke of true Socratic irony. The idea of a philosopher envying someone preoccupied with wearing fine clothes and making sure they look beautiful. What a scream. And then to say such a person ‘understands’ Homer. Too much. Plato must have had fun writing this dialogue since he adjudged the philosopher beyond concern with physical appearance and ascribed ‘understanding’ to the realm of abstract, logical thinking.SOCRATES: The gift which you possess of speaking excellently about Homer is not an art, but, as I was just saying, an inspiration; there is a divinity moving you, like that contained in the stone which Euripides calls a magnet, but which is commonly known as the stone of Heraclea. This stone not only attracts iron rings, but also imparts to them a similar power of attracting other rings; and sometimes you may see a number of pieces of iron and rings suspended from one another so as to form quite a long chain: and all of them derive their power of suspension from the original stone. In like manner the Muse first of all inspires men herself; and from these inspired persons a chain of other persons is suspended, who take the inspiration. ---------- What a crystal clear image! The divine muse is the magnetic stone and the poet is the magnetized ring pulled by the stone. And the poet inspires others in the same way: the magnetized ring magnetizes a 2nd and a 3rd ring, forming an entire chain of magnetized rings. Applying this to our site, Crime and Punishment is written by muse-inspired Dostoyevsky, the novel inspires members to write reviews and the reviews inspires comments and more readers of the novel. Thus, according to Plato, everyone in the chain is muse-inspired. How inspiring!SOCRATES: For the poet is a light and winged and holy thing, and there is no invention in him until he has been inspired and is out of his senses, and the mind is no longer in him: when he has not attained to this state, he is powerless and is unable to utter his oracles. ---------- Anybody who loves music and has developed a degree of technical expertise in playing a musical instrument knows the experience of reaching a point, a zone, where the music flows naturally beyond the boundaries of the ordinary thinking mind. When a number of musicians play together and share this inspired state – sheer magic.SOCRATES: Then, my dear friend, can I be mistaken in saying that Ion is equally skilled in Homer and in other poets, since he himself acknowledges that the same person will be a good judge of all those who speak of the same things; and that almost all poets do speak of the same things?ION: Why then, Socrates, do I lose attention and go to sleep and have absolutely no ideas of the least value, when any one speaks of any other poet; but when Homer is mentioned, I wake up at once and am all attention and have plenty to say?SOCRATES: The reason, my friend, is obvious. No one can fail to see that you speak of Homer without any art or knowledge. If you were able to speak of him by rules of art, you would have been able to speak of all other poets; for poetry is a whole. ---------- What a thought-provoking line of reasoning. Applying Socrates’s logic to lovers of novels, when someone can offer penetrating insight into a novel or novels written by one author, they should be able to provide insights into any novel. I sense a fallacy here but this is such an interesting question, I wouldn’t want to spoil it with an answer.

Ion claims to recite and understand the meaning of Homer's poetry as part of his success. Ion is like an actor who overestimates his intelligence and ability, like one who thinks he can run a company because he plays a CEO in a movie (insert actor of choice).This is a short dialogue. Socrates argues that Ion has no real understanding of Homer's content (Homer is the TRUE genius). The rhapsode (the one who recites) is a vehicle. Socrates attributes Ion's success to 'inspiration' from the muses or the god. Not from intelligence.All of Plato is insightful and worth reading, but I liked Ion for two additional reasons. This dialogue is shorter than Plato's other dialogues. Unlike some, there was a clear conclusion reached here, even though is was specific and not universal.

The Untamed - Enjoyable, Enigmatic, Classic Western By Michael Wischmeyer Whistlin' Dan Berry is undoubtedly one of the most enigmatic characters in Western fiction. With uncanny abilities he controls a wild stallion, appropriately named Satan, and a ferocious wolf dog, Black Bart. Naive and easy going, Berry proves absolutely unforgiving when physically assaulted by a feared, vicious outlaw, Jim Silent. Seemingly without any moderating emotions, Whistlin' Dan is relentless in his vengeful search for Silent and his outlaw gang.The Untamed (1919), Max Brand's first western novel, was radically different from earlier, more realistic, classic works like James Fenimore Cooper's The Prairie, Owen Wister's The Virginian, and Zane Grey's Riders of the Purple Sage. In The Untamed we readers learn little about the protagonist; his origin, his remarkable skills, and his animal-like instincts, remain shadowed in mystery.We also have little idea where the story takes place. Brand's geography is vaguely familiar and yet is clearly fictional, even mythical. Harsh, unforgiving deserts and mountains markedly shape the character and code of his fictional ranchers, heroes, and outlaws. Max Brand and eighteen other psuedonyms) wrote and wrote and wrote and wrote -- 30 million plus words in his career -- and just about everything he turned out is worth reading. And "The Untamed" is one of his best. Forget "The Virginian" and Zane Grey's pokey novels, "The Untamed" is the fictionalized west that we know and love, where men and women were larger than life and strode across a fantasy world of death, lawlessness, and strange beauty. After reading this novel, pick any other Faust/Brand title and give it a try: I guarantee you that you won't find a dud.

The Beginning of the Western Revolution By Claude Avary More than any other western novel, even more than the better known "Riders of the Purple Sage" and "The Virginian", "The Untamed" created the modern conception of the west as a violent world of fairy tale. Brand crafts an elegant melodrama of exaggerated life through his sociopathic hero, Whistlin' Dan Barry, and infuses his story with the violence and passion of Greek tragedy. This synthesis created the twentieth-century image of the old west. Brand, who would write over 300 novels in his career, writes with an ease and power that makes every page a joy.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. When You Long for a More Polite World By Maggie I love all of the books of E.P. Roe. The stories are interesting and well crafted. This story includes a visiting gentleman, nearly broken by the stress of Wall Street, a country family each of whose members contribute to their visitor's recovery; adventure in the mountains and at sea; gentle times at home and two major villans. The manners of the people are of course 19th century as are the words. The value of the Christian faith is emphasized but not preached. Reading these stories make me feel so hopeful because the difficulties in 21st Century churches are nothing new and somehow the church does survive. If you like Jane Austen or the Bronte's, you will enjoy "Opening a Chestnut Burr" and the other stories of Edward P. Roe.

By A Customer This book is probably the most spirit filled and guided work I've read in a long time. You can not help but hear the voice of God calling you to a deeper relationship with Him as you read this amazing classic. From begining to end each page is an impassioned plea for the reader to abandon "comfortable Christianity" in order to truly know God as He desires to be known. You can see right away that truly Mr. Tozer wrote this book on his knees. I found myself challenged to look at my own faith in Christ and what I should be doing with that faith in every chapter. Sometimes with weeping and confessing and always compelled to deep times of prayer and renewel in God's presence. The chapter entitled "The Blessedness of Possesing Nothing" should be required reading for anyone confessing Christ as their Lord. I was totally blown away and my life with Christ and my own pursuit of God has been forever enriched. I have read this book over and over and shared much of it with friends and family. If you are "stuck" in you walk with the Lord, let the Spirit of God use this book to shake you loose and move you onward and upward.

Clark This is one of a few books I've read that, upon reading it, actually manifested God's presence. In line with the teaching of the book, God impressed upon me his love and his desire for a more intimate relationship. I broke into tears. Few books have had that impact. The chapter entitled "The Blessedness of Possessing Nothing" is a profound call to absolute simplicity and abandonment to God who owns everything you may think you "possess", including yourself! Surrender it all to God and see what miracles will be wrought for His glory. Let God possess you! For those who want other recommendations, try "The Christian's Secret to a Happy Life" by Hannah Whitall Smith, "A Testament of Devotion" by Thomas Kelly, "Abandonment to Divine Providence" by Jean-Pierre de Caussade, "The Practice of the Presence of God" by Brother Lawrence and, for those who want to experience God's holiness in a powerful way, "The Holiness of God" by R.C. This book changed my life.I grew up in a conservative Christian church, my father was a pastor, and I was studying for the ministry when I purchased this book as a gift for a good friend. I didn't want to give him a gift that would lead him astray, so I decided to read the first chapter.What I found was nothing like what I had known. This was no dry, moldy, "scholarly" book--this was alive. The blessed truths that had been buried in my heart and mind beneath the drudgery of modern scholarship's debates over dating, authorship and sources came pouring forth in what I can only describe as "rivers of living water" (John 7:38). Through the Spirit-led power and insight of Tozer's writing I was awakened to the reality of the Almighty God and the nearness of His blessed Holy Spirit in an amazing way. The prayer he offers at the end of the first chapter (in which he borrows Moses' prayer from Exodus 33) left me in stunned awe before my Maker.This book (as its author was) is annointed with the presence and power God. I would most highly recommend this book to any person--both those who thirst for more of God and those who know nothing of this deep soul-hunger. Tozer speaks with an authority and passion characteristic of one who has been in the very presence of God. Let the Spirit speak to you through this great saint as you embark upon Man's most noble effort--the Pursuit of God.

There is a chapter that tells you how to assess your current financial situation, a chapter on how to keep an eye on your income and expenditures. There is also a chapter on budgeting and how to create one that will fit you. There is also a chapter on bad debt and how to get rid of it. The last chapter is a list of 10 money habits that you should adopt. This book is well written and easy to understand. It is also very informative. I would recommend it to anyone who needs help.

I'm getting serious about my finances for the new year and this is just what I needed. I learned things that I implemented immediately, like creating a budget. Cutting out the things we don't need. I definitely see clearer financial goals for the future. Our first goal is to pay off debt at a manageable pace. We already have our budget in place. I'm ready to make some big changes now!

I found this book and now I feel like I am finally on track financially. There are a lot of great tips and advice to get out of debt and back on track. I am already starting to see progress.

Not only does it describe everything you could possibly want to know about guest blogging, it also includes info about helpful social media and marketing strategies such as building your mailing list, understanding SEO, and building credibility in your area of expertise. The author then provides a step-by-step primer for guest blogging, which is very useful and easy-to-understand.I had some experience with guest blogging, and this book really enhanced my knowledge on the subject and inspired me to take my guest blogging to the next level. However, the author explains everything so clearly that this would be an awesome first resource for guest blogging newbies as well. Great read!

Must read marketing guide for new businesses By MonsterWrangler I've heard the term guest blogging before, but the barrier to entry seemed so high (in my mind) that I've never considered it. Until now. Mike Fishbein's book is a clearly laid out marketing plan for new businesses, and he walks through the concept of guest blogging step by step. This book covers the basics of SEO, lays out exactly what guest blogging is, how it can affect traffic to your own website, how it compares to traditional PR, how to find sites looking for guest bloggers, and what to write about. The book does a fantastic job taking the nebulous concept into something concrete and doable. I'm still a bit intimated by the idea, but so much less so than before I read the book. When you start your own business, you are responsible for everything, marketing included, and rich, meaningful how-to guides are an entrepreneur's best friend. This is such a guide. Fishbein also provides a ton of resources throughout the book, so whether you need to back track to get caught up, or want to move ahead, he's got a path for you to follow.

McClelland I've been writing for a lot of years now, and beyond the books, short stories, and poems I've written, I can't begin to tell you how many 'letters to the editors' and 'commentaries' that I've had published in newspapers, on internet news sites around the country, and even sites outside of the USA. But this book has given me much to think about in that regard. You see, I'd never considered that such writings could work on my behalf or to my advantage.
