Much of the novel is written from the view-point of his canine character, enabling London to explore how animals view their world and how they view humans. White Fang examines the violent world of wild animals and the equally violent world of humans. The book also explores complex themes including morality and redemption.

White Fang, by Jack London

From School Library Journal Gr 2-4–London's novel portrays the interior life of mistreated part-wolf White Fang while exploring the fundamental nature of wild animals and the brutality inherent in vast Alaskan landscapes and inside men's hearts. It does not seem suitable reading material for primary-grade children, and Lutin's picture-book adaptation does not make an effective argument for the attempt. From the first page, in which White Fang's half-dog mother runs with her mate, One-Eye, Lutin falters; London revels in detailing natural impulses and viciousness, but this adaptation betrays his text with a ludicrous statement about the pair's love for one another. Later pages similarly fail to capture the spirit of London's harsh study of instinct and domestication. Guilloppe's visually arresting illustrations may appeal to some comic-book fans, and several spreads effectively use striking silhouettes to convey menace and action without gruesome detail. But overall, the digital artwork's strong lines and vivid colors feel disappointingly flat, lacking the nuance and delicate power of a natural landscape. While the adaptation glosses over many troubling and violent subplots, like initial owner Gray Beaver's descent into alcoholism and White Fang's repeated beatings and deadly dog fights, Lutin includes two gunshots. Many readers enjoy stories of nature, wilderness, and survival; books by Jean Craighead George, Gary Paulsen, and Roland Smith should more than suffice until they choose to explore Jack London's savage classics unchanged.–Robbin E. From Booklist Gr. 6-8. Ed Young, whose haunting illustrations of the wolf made his Caldecott- winning Lon Po Po (1989) so memorable, was well chosen as the illustrator for the Scribner Illustrated Classics edition of White Fang. Jack London's 1906 novel. As many will remember, London tells the story of a wolf-dog who endures great cruelty before he comes to know human kindness. The 12 pastel illustrations illuminate the text with their dramatic use of light and dark, sensitively delineated forms, and soft, subtle shades of color. A handsome new edition of a longtime favorite. Carolyn PhelanCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

It is one of those books that I fall back on when I need a comforting story to read.It follows the life of one poor dog as he moves from one master to another, and even ends up as a fighting dog at one point. Its a bit like "Black Beauty" I guess seeing as it follows an animals life, but white fang is more of a story. White Fang is not just some docile horse but a real wild dog that has survived where others haven't. A great read and a great story.

Adventure in the Wild By Paul McGrath As a boy I used to love books like this, about untamed nature and woodlore and woodcraft, but it has been many years since I've read them. I recently had the occasion to revisit this excellent novel, and found that it has aged quite well and is still a terrific read. The story has to do with a wolf named White Fang, and begins before he was born, with his father and mother leading a pack in the dead of winter in the frozen Canadian wilderness. There is no game around and all are starving. They harass and harry a beleaguered dog-sled team over the course of several days, picking the dogs off one by one, then finally surrounding the one remaining man. He builds a ring of fire to protect himself from these ravenous wolves, but knows he soon must succumb to exhaustion. He notices the she-wolf, sitting patiently outside the ring, seemingly indifferent--except for the string of drool coming out of her mouth in anticipation of making a meal out of him. That is the lesson here, in this story of White Fang. It is a savage world, a world in which you either kill or are killed, eat or are eaten. His first day out of the den he kills and eats a small bird, then in turn is almost eaten by a hawk. He observes a porcupine roll itself into a ball to defend itself against a lynx, then observes the lynx yowl in pain after foolishly getting stung. The lynx plays another prominent role. Trying to survive a typical lean winter, White Fang's mother takes the desperate step of going to the absent lynx's den to eat its offspring. The enraged lynx later comes to their den and attacks, but with the help of a growing White Fang, they defeat it. It also becomes a meal.White Fang eventually gets taken in by men, first an Indian tribe where he is "tamed" with brutality, then by white traders who use him for their own base purposes. Through it all we see the cruel world in which he lives and feel his pain and hunger and anger. It is a well-plotted adventure carefully observed, and serves as a great reminder of how savage the untamed wilderness is, and that mankind is often only a bare step above it.

When the way of the wild was a fact of life By Linda Linguvic Written almost of century ago by Jack London, both of these stories have truly stood the test of time. Both of them are based on London's experience in the Yukon, and both are written from the point of view of dogs.In "The Call of the Wild", the dog Buck is kidnapped from an easy life and sold to a sled team during the Klondike Gold Rush. In spite of the numerous cruelties inflicted on him, Buck learns to survive. Eventually, he returns to the wild and to run with the wolves. In "White Fang", the story is reversed. White Fang is three-quarters wolf and was born in the wild. Through a series of events, he is domesticated and eventually becomes a tame and loving pet. There is much to learn in both of these stories. One thing is the way of animals and their life in the wild. Another is of the way of life in the Yukon. And of the men, both brutal and kind, who rely on the dogs to pull the sleds.Jack London used his words well. There's an elegant cadence and a vigorous spirit. His love for the animals comes through as well as his respect for the wild forces of nature. And the theme that life changes are really possible because of environmental forces.London didn't set out to write a story about the glorification of nature or vanishing wildlife. Indeed, during his short lifetime (1876-1916) the way of the wild was a fact of life. London just simply wrote his stories. And through his words, left a legacy of work that will continue to enrich the lives of readers for many generations to come.

Dick Cavett is back, sharing his reflections and reminiscences about Hollywood legends, American cultural icons, and the absurdities of everyday lifeIn Brief Encounters, the legendary talk show host Dick Cavett introduces us to the fascinating characters who have crossed his path, from James Gandolfini and John Lennon to Mel Brooks and Nora Ephron, enhancing our appreciation of their talent, their personalities, and their place in the pantheon. We tag along as Cavett spends an afternoon with Stan Laurel at his modest apartment in Los Angeles, spars with Muhammad Ali at his training camp, and comes to know a young Steve Jobs―who woos him to be Apple's first celebrity pitchman. He also offers piquant commentary on contemporary politics, the indignities of travel, the nature of comedy writing, and the utter improbability of being alive at all.On his talk show, Cavett welcomed the leading figures from film, music, theater, literature, comedy, and politics, and engaged them in conversation that made viewers feel that the discussion was taking place in their own living rooms. Jimmy Fallon, the host of The Tonight Show, has called him "a legend and an inspiration" and has written a foreword that makes clear the debt that today's talk show hosts owe to Dick Cavett. To spend a few minutes, or an hour, or even a whole evening with Dick Cavett is an experience not to be missed, and now there's no reason to deny yourself. Enjoy the conversation!

Review

"The book is a delightful peek behind the curtain at celebrities, complex characters, and the nuances of everyday life--all told with his singular wit and style."--"Publishers Weekly"

"The very model of a quick-witted interviewer, Cavett ... still works the crowd effectively.... [Cavett] remembers working as a gag writer for famed comedians and recalls the Broadway badinage and smart repartee that marked the well-regarded Dick Cavett Show."--"Kirkus Reviews"

"In the late 1960s to mid-1970s the Dick Cavett Show was a late-night TV destination. [Cavett] was known as a literate, erudite interviewer who loved wordplay, but who didn't take any guff from his guests... Most notable are his anecdotal stories about such people as Groucho Marx, Nora Ephron, and Muhammad Ali."--"Library Journal"

"The best bathroom reading ever written! Each story takes just the right amount of time."--Mel Brooks

"A welcome sequel to "Talk Show," Dick Cavett covers a lot of ground in a collection of erudite and witty pieces..."Brief Encounters" is very good and very funny, at times pointed, but always engaging."--"The Chicago Tribune"

"["Brief Encounters"] looks back on Dick Cavett's time with some of the biggest names of the 20th century. A touching essay about the late James Gandolfini, a fond remembrance of an afternoon at Stan Laurel's small Los Angeles apartment, sparring with Muhammed Ali, and being talked into signing on as Apple's first celebrity pitchman by a young Steve Jobs are all here, as are Cavett's warm memories of John Lennon."--Esquire.com

""Brief Encounters" includes numerous observations about contemporary culture and politics -- neither Democrats nor Republicans are spared ... -- as well as moving recollections of and tributes to stars no longer with us, from Stan Laurel to James Gandolfini."--"USA Today"

"[Cavett's] book is at its best when summoning memories of long-gone entertainment figures such as Stan Laurel and Groucho Marx...Cavett never abandons his wit...With his pithy prose style and compact paragraphs, Cavett has a sure feel for the art of column-writing."--"Columbus Dispatch"

Amazon groups all reviews of boooks (both print and audio of the same title) together. So note which format is being reviewed. This is a review of CD Audio version which comes on 7 CDs). Now on to my review.....I've been a big fan of Dick Cavett since is daytime talk show on ABC - followed by late night shows on ABC and then PBS. In fact, just a few weeks ago I reviewed a great DVD from PBS Home Video titled Dack Cavett's Watergate that I recommended in my review of that product).Cavett was what I always called the "thinking man's late night talk show host". He had politicians, entertainers, authors and movie legends on his show and it was always fascinating. There weren't aspiring comedians - Cavett can be very funny - he started by writing the jokes for Jack Paar and Johnny Carson.I wasn't aware until got this book (I saw an advance reading copy of the print edition) and the final version of the CD audio edition, that Cavett writes an weekly column on line for the New York Times. (Now I do). This book is a compilation of 57 of these columns, published between 2010 and early 2014. The subjects range from the great encounters that Cavett had - both on TV and off - with Arthur Godfrey, Marlene Dietrich, Stan Laurel (a visit to Laurel's apartment fills of the columns), Jonathan Winters, John Lennon, Muhammad Ali and more. He reminisces about his high school reunion and his Yale college reunion. He discusses sex education and gun control and his real displeasure with Dick Cheney. And there is more.Cavett is a conversationalist and so his stories are funnier and more insightful when you hear him. He seems to have adapted the book just a little bit, spelling out - or clarifying words when necessary. The printed book is about 250 pages (and includes a 1 ½ page "Foreword by Jimmy Fallon" (which, surprisingly, he does not read on the audio version. - even though Fallon's name is on the front of the audio CD box!) The audio version runs about 8 hours and you could probably read the book in less time. But, why? Let Cavett TELL you his stories, in his own way. It's much more personal and, frankly, the funnier stories will really be funnier.I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.Steve Ramm"Anything Phonographic"

Chowes Going back to Steve Allen, the original host of the TONIGHT Show, Dick Cavett's impossible task of going against Johnnie Carson was a failed attempt. While Carson featureD stars and usually mindless chatter, Cavett on ABC would feature the greats -- yes, from showbiz but also intellectuals. The enormous range of his knowledge was amazing. He left ABC for a half hour nightly program on PBS for a few years.I went to his PBS tapings on *8th Avenue in New York City -- at times two in one day. One day he began with fine artist David Hockney followed by a genetic biologist. It seems that he could hold his own no matter the field FCC member under JFK Newton Minnow called TV a vast wasteland. Yes, but not Dick Cavett. So my comments about Mr. Cavett's present book is somewhat prejudiced. When watching documentaries, you will often see the person of interest on a Cavett tape.In it he speaks about the many interesting persons he has come across in showbiz and the arts who were featured on his TV programs. Each chapter is like a piece of Belgium chocolate. It's difficult to put the book down. Many of his pieces emanate from the op-ed pieces he wrote for the New York Times.Fame is fleeting, so few people alive today will remember many of the giants he writes about. I read his two pieces on Arthur Godfrey. He probably holds the distinction of bringing in more money to CBS' William Paley that anyone else. He had a show five times a week on radio and TV show every morning for an hour and a half; at night he had two prime time TV shows. His last program was his morning radio show and them he faded to black. It was Godfrey who was the first to talk to each person -- not to an audience. Many celebrities today believe that their fame will last for eternity. A few will for a finite period of time as the remainder will fade to black and only you will remember them until...

I think it was because he used the word "delightful" often. I didn't know anyone who used that word in a casual sentence...unless it was William Buckley or Gore Vidal (who Cavett interviewed on many delightful shows).Who wanted to see Cavett interview another Ivy League, New York author-playwright-critic or revolutionary character character (like Joan Baez or John Lennon---even Buckley himself, for heaven's sake, when there was always a Johnny Carson or a Don Rickels or even Ed Sullivan (with his occasional "delightfuls") on another channel. Cavett always had a way of phrasing a sentence or idea in such a way that his tepid smile seemed to tell us that he was in on the joke and we would figure it out in due time...maybe.Over the years I haven't so much as grown to appreciate Cavett as I have the visual encyclopedia he has given us. It is a treat today to hear the icons of literature, film, stage, and (yes) politics spar and parry with Cavett on issues and positions, techniques and styles of the era.Brief Encounters doesn't so much relive or relate those Cavett interviews, but it does give us some additional insight into the people he enjoyed and the memories he most recalls. Apparently this book is taken from an opinion column he has written for some time for the New York Times and may be more familiar in style and content to readers of that publication. There are several personal recollections that may also give the reader more insight into Cavett himself. I found those personal retorts far less interesting than his recollections about more familiar names, but I may be biased. As for me, I now more enjoy and appreciate Cavett and his interviews, style and wit... and found this book delightful.

For lack of a better listener, Betty Gordon addressed the saucy little chipmunk that sat on the top rail of the old worn fence and stared at her with bright, unwinking eyes. "It is the loveliest vase you ever saw," said Betty, busily sorting the tangled mass of grasses and flowers in her lap. "Heavy old colonial glass, you know, plain, but with beautiful lines." The chipmunk continued to regard her gravely.

I laid down my book and listened. It was only the choking gurgle of a broken rain-pipe outside: then it was the ripple and swish of a meadow stream. To make out the voices of redwings and marsh-wrens in the rasping notes of the city sparrows behind the shutter required much more imagination. But I did it. I wanted to hear, and the splash of the water helped me.

The red stallion did not appear to be hurt. The twitching of his muscles must have been caused by the cactus spikes embedded in him. There were drops of blood all over one side. Lucy thought she dared to try to pull these thorns out. She had never in her life been afraid of any horse. Farlane, Holley, all the riders, and her father, too, had tried to make her realize the danger in a horse, sooner or later.

Wildfire, by Zane Grey

About the Author American author (Pearl Zane Grey) is best known as a pioneer of the Western literary genre, which idealized the Western frontier and the men and women who settled the region. Following in his father s footsteps, Grey studied dentistry while on a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. Grey s athletic talent led to a short career in the American minor league before he established his dentistry practice. As an outlet to the tedium of dentistry, Grey turned to writing, and finally abandoned his dental practice to write full time. Over the course of his career Grey penned more than ninety books, including the best-selling Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of Grey s novels were adapted for film and television. He died in 1939.

It's basically a story about a young woman back in the 1800s, who meets a young man and how their relationship grows around a wild horse he caught and she tamed.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Descriptive landscape By kiz Zane Grey is forever a painter of western landscape. His descriptions of mountain trails, sagebrush and western topography allow the reader to be transported to America's frontier heritage. There is limited suspense in the developing romance between characters, but you always know that strong personalities prevail and good triumphs over evil. I enjoyed revisiting Wildfire on the Kindle.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. it will pull you in By Kristina J. livesay It is beyond words for me to explain how great this book is. The way nature is described so clearly, how you feel the emotions of the people and the animals. I really couldn't put it down. I am now a great fan of Zane Grey.

Walking through the early October woods one day, I came upon a place where the ground was thickly strewn with very large unopened chestnut burrs. On examination I found that every burr had been cut square off with about an inch of the stem adhering, and not one had been left on the tree. It was not accident, then, but design. Whose design? A squirrel’s.
