Having lived in Atlanta for many years, narrator Linda Stephens has an authentic ear for the dialects of that region. Review "The best novel to have ever come out of the South...it is unsurpassed in the whole of American writing." -- "The Washington Post""Fascinating and unforgettable! A remarkable book, a spectacular book, a book that will not be forgotten!" -- "Chicago Tribune""Beyond a doubt one of the most remarkable first novels produced by an American writer. It is also one of the best." -- "The New York Times""I first read "Gone with the Wind" in grade school--a boy of the upper South who'd seen the great movie and felt compelled to learn what lay behind it, all thousand-plus pages worth. No page disappointed me. What other American novel surpasses its eagerness to tell a great story of love and war; what characters equal the cantankerous passions of Scarlett and Rhett? Even Scott Fitzgerald spoke well of it. What more could I ask, even seven decades later?" -- Reynolds Price""Gone with the Wind" is one of those rare books that we never forget. We read it when we're young and fall in love with the characters, then we watch the film and read the book again and watch the film again and never get tired of revisiting an era that is the most important in our history. Rhett and Scarlet and Melanie and Ashley and Big Sam and Mammy and Archie the convict are characters who always remain with us, in the same way that Twain's characters do. No one ever forgets the scene when Scarlet wanders among the wounded in the Atlanta train yard; no one ever forgets the moment Melanie and Scarlet drag the body of the dead Federal soldier down the staircase, a step at a time. "Gone with the Wind" is an epic story. Anyone who has not read it has missed one of the greatest literary experiences a reader can have." -- James Lee Burke, bestselling author of "The Tin Roof Blowdown ""In my own personal life, I find many similarities to Scarlett's: The whole 17-inch waist thing notwithstanding, I do love a barbecue, both for the food and the men--I have been known to "eat like a field hand and gobble like a hawg"--I admit that at least on one occasion I may have feigned interest in some guy to further my own interests--I have fought tooth, toenail and tirelessly for my family--I learn slow but I learn good--and even so, I still adore the prospect of dealing with most things...Tomorrow." -- Jill Conner Browne, The Sweet Potato Queen, bestselling author of "The Sweet Potato Queens' First Big-Ass Novel""Let's say you've read "Gone with the Wind" at least twice, and seen the movie over and again. So, here's a thought. Buy this handsome paperback edition, just for Pat Conroy's preface. This passionate, nearly breathless love letter is a Song of Solomon to Margaret Mitchell, Scarlett O'Hara, and Conroy's beautiful, GTW-obsessed mother. Indeed, his luminous preface packs a durable wallop, just like the epic Pulitzer prize-winning work that inspires it." -- Jan Karon, author of "The Mitford Years" series"Not just a great love story, "Gone with the Wind" is one of the most powerful anti-war novels ever written. Told from the standpoint of the women left behind, author Margaret Mitchell brilliantly illustrates the heartbreaking and devastating effects of war on the land and its people." -- Fannie Flagg, Academy Award nominated-author"In 1936 I was in E.M. Daggett Junior High in Ft. Worth, Texas. By some chance I was able to read "Gone with the Wind" early on. Then and now, I found it one of the great experiences of a young life. I still list it as one of my 10 favorite books." -- Liz Smith, nationally syndicated columnist"GWTW is an indelible portrait of a unique time and place, American's greatest political and moral conflict, and the myths that surround it -- an all absorbing spectacle of a read even for postmodern readers. Mitchell vividly portrays the disillusionment and devastation of war, the ignorance of the uninitiated, and the transformation of arrogance into tenacity that shaped the first "new South." All the details of history and place come together as a rich backdrop for those unforgettable characters: shallow and selfish Scarlett, sincere Melanie, moony-eyed Ashley, and the sage, pragmatic, dashing, and rakish Rhett Butler--the most enduring heartthrob of American literature has produced. I'd reread the book for the thrill of Rhett alone!" -- Darnell Arnoult, author of "Sufficient Grace"

About the Author American journalist and author Margaret Mitchell is best known for her epic Civil War-era novel, Gone with the Wind, for which she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1937. Mitchell was born and bred in the South, and family stories about the Civil War influenced her writing, particularly Gone with the Wind. Mitchell was also an accomplished journalist, writing more than 125 features for the Atlanta Journal before retiring due to an injury. Although Gone with the Wind was the only novel to be published by Mitchell during her life (Lost Laysen, a novella written by Mitchell as a teenager was published posthumously in 1996), she continues to be considered one of the pre-eminent authors of the early 1900s.

I've read all the classics, and I even know some Literary Theory. Gone With the Wind? Pul-lease, racist, sexist, revanchist trash, made popular by all the young woman dreaming of being Scarlett and having both their Rhett and Ashley. Cheerleader fare. Escapist. WRONG!Gone with the Wind is an American War & Peace. This is serious literature, which won the Pulitzer prize, no less. Most people don't see past the epic plot (which isn't as cut and dried as you may think) or the love story, but this is no less than a successfull attempt to reclaim a discarded culture. It is not about crinoline and lace, it it about the Apocalypse and how losers of the counter-revolution must learn to live in a place where all their politics, personal or civil, are demolished. Scarlett O'Hara is popular because she is an American, driven, materialistic, sentimental and utterly ruthless. Rhett Bulter is the tragic character of this book; the way of life and ideals he disdained are killing him, and he suffers like no one else in this post-apocalyptic landscape. His departure at the end is an act of contrition as much as a romantic failure; he had tried to recreate the materialism of the ante-bellum world, but negeclected the spirituality (such as it is) of men like Ashley Wilkes. Both men, the dreamer and the realist end up alone in a very sterile place. This book is proto-feminist as well. Scarlett survives, even as everything around her dies, but in the end, she too is alone.Don't dumb this masterpiece down. The movie fails to capture even a tenth of the depth here. And that awful sequel! Caused by the mistake that this book is some kind of romance novel. This is Art, and you can't stick a new ending on it, any more than you can a great painting or musical composition.

I once gave a copy to a friend to read -she said it was 'too old fashioned' oh well her loss. I'm glad I'm in the company of true 'Windies' so I thought I'd share with you some interesting facts about the book: -Scarlett was originally named Pansy-Scarlett was partly based on Mitchell herself and her grandmother-Rhett was based on Mitchell's first husband Red Upshaw-the initials JRM in her dedication refer to her second husband John Reginald Marsh-Margaret Mitchell maintained the only character taken from real life was Prissy the maid-When asked who she'd like to be in the movie version, Mitchell said 'Prissy'-Like a detective novelist, Mitchell wrote the last chapter first and the first chapter last-GWTW is the only book to sell more copies than the bible-Mitchell nearly went blind just proofreading the manuscript!-Mitchell scrupously researched every detail for GWTW, even going to the town register to ensure there was no Rhett Butler or Scarlett O'Hara alive during the Civil War-The novel took ten years to complete, most of it was written in three-For style, she endeavoured to make her prose so that a five-year old could read it-If she were ever to write a sequel, it would be called 'Back With the Breeze' On that note, please avoid the Ripley penned sequel 'Scarlett', it is atrocious.-Gone with the Wind is my favourite book of all time, and yours too, I hope. Enjoy!

I haven't read this since I was a young girl in the early 70's and should never have waited so long to read it again. The characters were exceptionally well drawn, the dialogue was brilliant, particularly between Rhett (SIGH!) and Scarlett. I swear there was sparks flying off the pages. I am going to miss the people I will have to put behind me now that the book has come to an end, Rhett (SIGH), Scarlett, Mammy, Prissy and Aunt Pitty Pat (LOL).The author's use of prose was beautiful, all the scenes and action came alive for me. Some people seem to be offended by the racism in the book, but that's how things were back then. Sugar coating it would have ruined the story reducing it to a Harlequin romance. This is an incredibly well written book about the death of a civilization and the struggles to survive in the new era. This is a book that should not be missed, particulary those who enjoy historical fiction.

The great Northwest—that wonderful frontier that called to itself a world's hardiest spirits—is rapidly becoming a settled country; and before the light of civilizing influences, the blanket-Indian has trailed the buffalo over the divide that time has set between the pioneer and the crowd. With his passing we have lost much of the aboriginal folk-lore, rich in its fairy-like characters, and its relation to the lives of a most warlike people.

McAulay The author died before I was born, so my long-lost copy of this book must have belonged to my brother or another family member before my grandmother read it to me, time and time again -- along with the Oz books, it was one of my absolute favorites. It's been over 60 years, but I vividly remember the stories of Coyote and Old-Man and the others, and I'm delighted that Linderman's version of these old tales is available again. He lets the characters speak, and tell the stories in their own voices. I look forward to sharing them with my own granddaughter.

As Don Ippolito passed down the long narrow calle or footway leading from the Campo San Stefano to the Grand Canal in Venice, he peered anxiously about him: now turning for a backward look up the calle, where there was no living thing in sight but a cat on a garden gate; now running a quick eye along the palace walls that rose vast on either hand and notched the slender strip of blue sky visible overhead with the lines of their jutting balconies, chimneys, and cornices; and now glancing toward the canal, where he could see the noiseless black boats meeting and passing.

A Foregone Conclusion, by William Dean Howells

About the Author Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American humorist and writer, who is best known for his enduring novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has been called the Great American Novel. Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, Twain held a variety of jobs including typesetter, riverboat pilot, and miner before achieving nationwide attention for his work as a journalist with The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. He earned critical and popular praise for his wit and enjoyed a successful career as a public speaker in addition to his writing. Twain s works were remarkable for his ability to capture colloquial speech, although his adherence to the vernacular of the time has resulted in the suppression of his works by schools in modern times. Twain s birth in 1835 coincided with a visit by Halley s Comet, and Twain predicted, accurately, that he would go out with it as well, dying the day following the comet s return in 1910.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. An early novel from Howells By Jeffrey Leach William Dean Howells (1837-1920) ranks as one of America's most important authors. Ever heard of him? I hadn't either until I stumbled over his name several years ago, back when I was reading Frank Norris and Theodore Dreiser. Howells was a proponent and practitioner of realism in literature, a concept that meshed pretty well with novels written by Norris and Dreiser. Since I enjoyed "The Octopus," "McTeague," "Sister Carrie," and "An American Tragedy" so much, I just knew I needed to visit a few of Howells's novels at some point. That time is now. I read two of them, this one and "A Modern Instance". I'm not overly impressed with them. I know, I know...I probably need to read "The Rise of Silas Lapham" to get the full William Dean Howells effect. I just don't want to right now. I can say, after reading these two books, that I understand why Howells is such an obscure figure in American literature. He might practice the sort of realism that fueled many of the novels from Norris and Dreiser, but his failure to focus on the sordid details of American life cost him a lasting reputation with a popular audience."A Foregone Conclusion" takes place in Italy during the 1860s. While the Civil War rages away across the pond, American consul Henry Ferris spends his days painting pictures and enjoying the quaint Italian atmosphere. One day he receives a visit from Don Ippolito, a Catholic priest with a flair for inventing devices that don't work. He tries to sell Ferris an idea about a new cannon that will revolutionize warfare, but leaves dejected when the consul points out a glaring design flaw. The visit has a larger significance, however, when Mrs. Vervain and her daughter Florida arrive on the scene. Two Americans taking a leisurely jaunt through Europe, the Vervains strike up an initially one-sided friendship with Henry Ferris. When Mrs. Vervain expresses the desire that her daughter should learn Italian, Ferris remembers Ippolito and recommends him to the two women. And the promise of a job comes just in the nick of time, too, as the good Don is nearly broke and desperately needs funds to retain his residence. He agrees to accept the task, and in no time at all the Vervains, Don Ippolito, and Henry Ferris embark on several lengthy tours of the beautiful Italian landscape.Problems soon emerge that threaten the group's tranquility. Florida, a proud but beautiful young woman, soon draws the attentions of both Don Ippolito and Henry Ferris. Should be a no brainer, right? How can a Catholic priest act on feelings he has for a woman? The whole celibacy vow should kill off any ideas about romance in a hurry. Not so fast. As the story gradually reveals, Ippolito never really wanted to become a priest in the first place. He is currently undergoing a crisis of faith that makes him want to leave the priesthood in order to become an inventor. Ferris assumes this revelation means Ippolito will run off with Florida, so he leaves Italy in a huff to do his own thing in the United States, always plagued by the memory of Florida Vervain and what might have been had the two married. I won't spoil the conclusion of the story for all two of the people who might read this book in the next couple of decades except to say that a marriage does eventually take place, as do several deaths, and the surviving characters often reflect on lessons learned during those troubled yet halcyon days in Italy.I'm being a bit harsh on "A Foregone Conclusion". I did enjoy several elements of the novel, primarily the fascinating and minute detail Howells uses to describe the Italian countryside. He spent some time in Venice as consul during the Civil War (write what you know, I guess), so he is familiar with the sights and sounds of the region. He's a good writer too, good enough to bring the places the characters visit to life. Dialogue isn't a problem for Howells either, but prepare yourself for reading a novel clogged with constant talking and chitchatting. These people spit out more words than a livestock auctioneer on uppers. It's a good thing Howells occasionally alleviates things somewhat through the humorous antics of Mrs. Vervain. Without that, I am not sure I would have made it through the novel. Anyway, there are good things to say about "A Foregone Conclusion," and they offset occasionally the plodding pace and an ending that seemed rushed. Speaking of problems with the novel, did anyone else notice how certain parts of the story seemed like they were stuck together without any attempt to make them flow? I did. It's the mark of a writer still feeling his way through a first or second novel.I came into "A Foregone Conclusion" with the comparison between Howells, Norris, and Dreiser on my mind, so I noticed right away the lavish attention spent on creating detailed atmosphere (a hallmark of realism and central to stories by Norris and Dreiser) as well as the controversial idea of placing a priest with a crisis of faith front and center in the story. The idea of a man of the cloth doubting the existence of God must have shocked readers of the story back in the 1870s, but it's less sordid of a concept today. Another reviewer noticed how Howells used Ippolito and Ferris as representatives of the divide between America and Europe in the late 19th century. Good catch! I never saw that while I read the book, but the theory fits in well with Howells perceptions about the differences between the two geographical regions. So there you go. "A Foregone Conclusion" does offer up plenty of meat to the lover of classic literature. You just need to get past the problems I noted above to get there. Good luck.

Uneasy friendship between 2 men of the 19th Century By Dave Deubler American artist-turned-consul Henry Ferris befriends Don Ippolito, a Venitian priest, in this short novel by William Dean Howells. One summer in Venice during the Civil War period two American tourists - a Mrs. Vervain and her beautiful daughter Florida - turn to these two men for help and change their lives forever. Don Ippolito, despite his vow of celibacy, believes he is falling in love with Florida, while Ferris, all diplomacy and artistic sensibilities, finds her haughty and ill-mannered. But more than the love story, Howells seems interested in exploring the uneasy relationship between these two very different men. And the way things end up, is of course, a foregone conclusion.Howells, one of the primary proponents of American Realism, presents us with a story that can nevertheless be viewed on many levels: as psychology, as religion, as art - the book hints at the whole world of human feeling. So why does Howells choose to tell this story of a Venetian priest who tinkers with mechanical gadgets, and an American consul who fancies himself a painter? A geo-political reading would suggest that the competition for the beautiful Florida symbolizes the struggle between the old and the new - certainly a relevant issue for post-Civil War Americans. Perhaps even more to the point, Howells may be using these characters to represent contrasting literary styles, where the priest is the dreamy romantic and the artist is the practical realist. However one chooses to interpret it, this is an entrancing story about two men at the crossroads of their lives, with exquisite prose, and some subtle moral lessons that make it well worth reading.Of course there are some of the problems common with 19th Century fiction: the point of view makes it difficult to see the women as more than caricatures, there's absolutely no humor, and virtually no action. So if reading about the feelings and conversations of a man from a bygone era doesn't interest you, you might want to look elsewhere.

Going Nuclear focuses on one of the most critical negotiations in recent memory, the efforts to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power. Iran and the P5+1 countries recently reached an agreement on a framework to limit the Iranian nuclear weapons program, but differences remain, particularly with regional countries who were not at the table. The fate of the region, the possibility of war, and the potential for a nuclear arms race in the Middle East will largely depend on how Israel and regional Sunni Arab countries judge the agreement.

Going Nuclear offers a unique perspective on the negotiations and potential repercussions based on important findings and lessons from psychology, neuroscience, and decision making. It explores the influence of history and hindsight bias on Russia, China, Iran, Israel, and Sunni Arab countries, and the implications for the United States and its Western partners. It discusses the history of proliferation and its benefits, costs, risks, and uncertainties for countries that succeeded in becoming nuclear powers. Those factors are at play as Iran seeks to follow in their footsteps, while its neighbors remained determined to prevent it.

Going Nuclear reaches beyond the saga of the Iranian negotiations to discuss the influence of history and hindsight in other contexts, including technical analysis, decision making, leadership, and business.

The book is based on numerous papers, articles, and interviews, that were integrated into a coherent read. Mr. Paez's passion saves us from the dry and tough experience that usually accompanies such fact-packed books. However, his personal experience as US Air Force veteran and researcher into safety and security don't surface as much as the interested reader may want it to.The essence of the book is twofold. Not only does it shed light on current crises and political instability, but it also shows the detrimental effects of hindsight bias on decision-making. The book is more than just a history lesson, it harbors many useful insights for any decision-maker. A few of the best are: "Hindsight doesn't produce foresight" and its emergence is "a process, not an event'.For leaders who have to make critical, long-term decisions, this type of insight is extremely valuable. The recognition alone, that all our decisions are prone to hindsight bias more than we would imagine, will have beneficial effects on sense-making, strategy formation, and other managerial tasks for the long-term future.Reading this book has once again warned me to remain critical of my own reasoning and decision-making. Considering the increasing amount of change in the corporate environment of today, and the pressure that we feel to decide swiftly, this warning can't be administered enough.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Best step-by-step how to self-publish book I've read thus far By Steven J Hernandez This was an immensely practical book on how to publish with Kindle. Rand starts by sharing his motivations (which are not unlike mine) and then gets into the "meat and potatoes" of how to make the best of Kindles publishing opportunities.Key topics covered in the book include tips on pricing and marketing, creating a cover, getting reviews and how to use Amazon's promotional features, It is detailed advice, not just general. For example, he tells you what file type to save your cover and text in, how to use page breaks, what font works best, etc. for a good-looking end product. He also tells you how to use "Best Seller" listings and the search bar to your advantage.I thought enough of the book to take notes on it via 3x5 cards. I plan to use the notes as a guide to publishing my first book. My only fault with the book is that I can't use the recommended "Phoster" app because I don't have an iPad. It's frustrating, but I will have to find some way around it. Otherwise, I couldn't have asked for a better book on self-publishing with Kindle.

Excellent tutorial for self publishing via Kindle Direct By Roger Wilco This is a timely, simple, and straight forward guide on how to navigate Kindle Publishing. In fact, after reading this book, I have come to a much larger appreciation of the magic that is Amazon. The ability for the average person to publish a book, without the confusing jungle that is traditional publishing - it is now possible to quickly get a piece of work out and sale-able in record time. Kudos to Rand Bennett for this useful project on getting self-published online with Kindle Publishing.

Great Kindle Tutorial By Amazon Customer At first glance, this book looks as though its aim is to promise something unrealistic for the average indie author. But even if you aren't generating this much per month, the book is a worthwhile read. It's honest, practical and straightforward advice from someone who has been there and wants the reader to benefit from his experience.

As I Was Saying... is the seventh book in Jeremy Clarkson's best-selling The World According to Clarkson series.***Crikey, the world according to Clarkson's been a funny old place of late . . .For a while, Jeremy could be found in his normal position as the tallest man on British television but, more recently, he appears to have been usurped by a pretend elephant. But on paper the real Jeremy remains at the helm. That's as it should be. For nearly thirty years he has been fearlessly leading the charge as one the best comic writers in the country. And in 2015, he shows no sign of slowing down. So, whether it's pondering If Jesus might have been better off being born in New Zealand Why reflexive pronoun abuse is the worst thing in the world How Pam Ayres's head trumps Gordon Gecko's underpants Or what a television presenter with time on his hands gets up toJeremy is still trying to make sense of all the big stuff.Circumstances change. Nothing's forever. But As I Was Saying provides glorious proof that Jeremy remains as funny, puzzled, excitable, outspoken, insightful and thought-provoking as ever. It mentions the whole sacking deal in the beginning (I assume many people wanted to read about that). All in all I highly recommend this book.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Way funny read By Amazon Customer Hilarious social comentary as always. Very hard to put down often had me laughing out loud

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Delicious By Melinda Burnett Vast improvement over last year's collection of articles. Some real laugh out loud moments, and, strangely, a few "well I wondered about that myself but never thought anyone else would be nutty enough to, too" moments, particularly about the development of....food. Well, I DID wonder.Writing style comes acrost as if a burden has been lifted off his shoulders, and as a result his writing is equally light and much more personable this time around. Say what you will, the man has a way with words, and a writing style to die for, and I very much enjoyed devouring this book. A throwback to earlier ones in the series. If you are a fan, you'll understand me.

In presenting "Ben, the Luggage Boy," to the public, as the fifth of the Ragged Dick Series, the author desires to say that it is in all essential points a true history; the particulars of the story having been communicated to him, by Ben himself, nearly two years since. In particular, the circumstances attending the boy's running away from home, and adopting the life of a street boy, are in strict accordance with Ben's own statement. While some of the street incidents are borrowed from the writer's own observation, those who are really familiar with the different phases which street life assumes in New York, will readily recognize their fidelity.

I have just finished reading this and I have a mighty big lump in my throat. From the beginning in reading of Ben's temper and rash decision to run away to the sweet end of turning his life around and coming back home. Alger had me completely captivated.....again....lolI do wish that Richard Hunter (ragged Dick) had been in the story but it's still awesome. I can not wait to read the next story. (Rufus and Rose I believe) :)

Almost one in four American working adults has a job that pays less than a living wage. Conventional wisdom says that’s how the world has to work. Bad jobs with low wages, minimal benefits, little training, and chaotic schedules are the only way companies can keep costs down and prices low. If companies were to offer better jobs, customers would have to pay more or companies would have to make less.

But in The Good Jobs Strategy, Zeynep Ton, a professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management, makes the compelling case that even in low-cost settings, leaving employees behind―with bad jobs―is a choice, not a necessity. Drawing on more than a decade of research, Ton shows how operational excellence enables companies to offer the lowest prices to customers while ensuring good jobs for their employees and superior results for their investors.

Ton describes the elements of the good jobs strategy in a variety of successful companies around the world, including Southwest Airlines, UPS, Toyota, Zappos, and In-N-Out Burger. She focuses on four model retailers―Costco, Mercadona, Trader Joe’s, and QuikTrip―to demonstrate the good jobs strategy at work and reveals four choices that have transformed these companies’ high investment in workers into lower costs, higher profits, and greater customer satisfaction.

Full of surprising, counterintuitive insights, the audiobook answers questions such as: How can offering fewer products increase customer satisfaction? Why would having more employees than you need reduce costs and boost profits? How can companies simultaneously standardize work and empower employees?

The Good Jobs Strategy outlines an invaluable blueprint for any organization that wants to pursue a sustainable competitive strategy in which everyone―employees, customers, and investors―wins.

The Good Jobs Strategy: How the Smartest Companies Invest in Employees to Lower Costs and Boost Profits, by Zeynep Ton

Review “In the last few years, [Zeynep] Ton has become a revolutionary force in a field that would seem unlikely to generate many — the Kafkaesque-titled Operations Management. Her central thesis is that many of [the] big-box retailers have been making a strategic error… but she believes her core findings are relevant in nearly every industry. After re-evaluating the relationship between worker management and profit, she argues that many corporate leaders will realize that paying their workers more and treating them better will actually make everyone better off. And this, indeed, would foment a small revolution.” —The New York Times Magazine“…at a time when the complexity of workers’ jobs is increasing and labour force investment declining, [The Good Jobs Strategy] is a methodically researched riposte to cutting staff and wages.” —Financial Times “In this brilliantly conceived and written book, Zeynep Ton shows that companies that view their workforce as an asset to be maximized rather than a cost to be minimized, have both happier workers and better business results. This book is a 'must read' for anyone that wants to think creatively about how they manage their workforce.” —Marshall Fisher, professor at The Wharton School and co-author of The New Science of Retailing “Using years of research and analysis, Zeynep Ton has proven what great leaders know instinctively—an engaged, well-paid  workforce that is treated with dignity and respect creates outsized returns for investors. She demonstrates that the race to the bottom in retail employment doesn’t have to be the only game being played. In fact, The Good Jobs Strategy shows that smart business leaders can create great shareholder value while creating good jobs.” —José Alvarez, senior lecturer at Harvard Business School and former president and CEO of Stop & Shop “Stop the presses. Tear out the front page. Employers can increase profits by paying their employees more and treating them better. Raising wages and improving working conditions is not just a matter of public policy. The private sector itself can make a huge difference.  Everyone who cares about good jobs—and especially every CEO—needs to read this highly informative and thoroughly readable book.” —Peter Edelman, professor of law at Georgetown Law Center and author of So Rich, So Poor: Why It’s So Hard to End Poverty in America “In The Good Jobs Strategy, Zeynep Ton offers insights into how successful companies utilize operational excellence to thrive, and she reminds us that the spirit and culture of an organization—that sparkle in the eye—comes only from fully engaged employees.” —Michael Eskew, former CEO of UPS

IntroductionThere are different ways to make money, I tell my MBA students on the first day of the class I teach on operations for service industries. You can certainly succeed at the expense of your employees by offering bad jobs—jobs that pay low wages, provide scant benefits and erratic work schedules, and are designed in a way that makes it hard for employees to perform well or find meaning and dignity in their work. You can even succeed at the expense of your customers; for example, by offering shoddy service. People may not enjoy buying from you, but plenty of them will do it anyway if you keep prices low enough.   In service industries, succeeding at the expense of employees and at the expense of customers often go together. If employees can’t do their work properly, they can’t provide good customer service. That’s why our experiences with restaurants, airlines, hotels, hospitals, call centers, and retail stores are often disappointing, frustrating, and needlessly time-consuming.   Many people in the business world assume that bad jobs are necessary to keep costs down and prices low. But I give this approach a name—the bad jobs strategy—to emphasize that it is not a necessity, it is a choice. There are companies in business today that have made a different choice, which I call the good jobs strategy. These companies provide jobs with decent pay, decent benefits, and stable work schedules. But more than that, these companies design jobs so that their employees can perform well and find meaning and dignity in their work. These companies—despite spending much more on labor than their competitors do in order to have a well-paid, well-trained, well-motivated workforce—enjoy great success. Some are even spending all that extra money on labor while competing to offer the lowest prices—and they pull it off with excellent profits and growth.   At this point in the class, I tell my students that if they end up founding or leading a business, they will be able to choose how that business makes money. They can choose a “low cost at any cost” approach, but they cannot say they had no other choice. And finally, I tell them that if instead they choose the good jobs strategy, they had better take a lot of operations courses—like the one they’re in—because operations is what makes the good jobs strategy possible.   They laugh, but they soon discover that I am not kidding. And that is what The Good Jobs Strategy is about—how companies can use operations to deliver good jobs to employees, strong returns to investors, and low prices and good service to customers all at the same time.   The good jobs strategy is not just a book title, it is a concrete strategy. It combines investment in people—much more investment than normal—with a set of operational decisions related to (a) how many products and services a company will offer, (b) the balance of job standardization and employee empowerment, (c) the allocation of work among employees, and (d) staffing levels and how employees will engage in continuous improvement. I did not invent this strategy. It is not the product of academic speculation. I observed it in a group of highly successful companies. I wanted to know how these companies managed to do very well and keep their prices low without making life miserable for employees and frustrating for customers.   This book tells what I found. Chapter 1 describes what the bad jobs strategy and the good jobs strategy look like when you’re working in them and highlights the possibility and benefits of pursuing the good jobs strategy even in low-cost retail. Chapter 2 explains why operations and investment in people are the key ingredients of the good jobs strategy. Chapter 3 shows how poor operations is more of an Achilles’ heel than most retailers realize and is a natural result of trying too hard to control labor costs. This chapter introduces what I call the “vicious cycle of retail.” In Chapter 4, we meet the four “model retailers” that are the core of this book—companies that follow the good jobs strategy, offering good jobs, low prices, and excellent customer service, and generating great financial results all at the same time. Rather than being stuck in the vicious cycle, these companies are benefiting from what I call the “virtuous cycle of retail.”   Chapters 5 through 8 are the practical heart of the book. They discuss in detail the four operational choices that make the difference for these model retailers. In addition to the benefits just listed—good jobs, low prices, good service, and strong financial performance—two further strategic benefits of the good jobs strategy are shown in Chapter 9. In Chapter 10, we look at how companies can stick with the good jobs strategy even when circumstances are pushing them hard the other way.   Although the strategy I will describe has been very successful, it is neither quick nor easy. In fact, it is complex and has to be carried out carefully, forcefully, continuously, and in the face of many obstacles. In return, it not only allows for better day-to-day and year-to-year performance, but it also allows companies to seize strategic opportunities by adapting to changing circumstances more quickly than other companies can manage.   The good jobs strategy can be seen at work in a variety of contexts, but in this book I focus on low-cost retail for three reasons. First, retail is where millions of people work. Walmart, the eight-hundred-pound gorilla of low-cost retail, is the world’s largest private employer, with more than 1.3 million employees in the United States alone. Second, low-cost retail jobs are notorious for their low pay, minimal benefits, unstable schedules, and lack of meaning and dignity—the epitome of “bad jobs” as I define the term. Third, of the people who believe that offering good jobs is possible, most do not believe it is possible to do so in such industries as low-cost retail. If the good jobs strategy is possible in low-cost retail, then it is possible pretty much anywhere.   Although the context of this book is retail, the good jobs strategy allows many other types of companies to use operations to provide good jobs for employees, high quality of goods and services at low prices for customers, and strong financial returns for investors. The examples include airlines, restaurants, hotels, call centers, distribution centers, and manufacturers.   I wrote this book for managers, executives, and entrepreneurs who want to offer good jobs but don’t think they can because controlling costs is so important to their business. You will see that offering good jobs can in fact reduce costs and increase profits as long as it is combined with operational excellence. If you want to offer good jobs and low prices at the same time, operational excellence is not optional, it is mandatory.   I also wrote this book for people who believe that offering good jobs may be good for individuals and for society, but that business decisions should be made solely to maximize profits. You will see that the companies that follow the good jobs strategy don’t do it just to be altruistic. They have found it to be the best and most sustainable way to provide superior returns to their investors in the long term.   The good jobs strategy is a long-term investment in your employees with the expectation that those well-paid, well-trained, well-motivated employees will generate even more than they cost. What makes them worth more than they cost is operational excellence. The companies examined closely in this book have all found this strategy to work. Many more companies should join them.

It's really so simple...and, yes, so difficult By Robert Morris Many years ago, Southwest Airlines' then chairman and CEO, Herb Keller, was asked to explain why Southwest is the most profitable of the ten largest airlines and has a cap value greater than the other nine airlines combined. He replied, "We take great care of our people, they take great care of our customers, and our customers take great care of our shareholders." I was reminded of that statement as I began to read this book. Although Zeynep Ton focuses much of her attention on four companies (Costco, Mercadona, QuikTrip, and Trader Vic's), she explains how others such as Southwest and Zara have also used a good jobs strategy to achieve and then sustain high profitability while continuing to be ranked each year among companies that are the most highly admired and the next to work for. According to Ton, more than ten years research leaves no doubt about this reality: "Great performance, whether in customer service or the quality of manufacturing, requires operational excellence. Operational excellence requires a great operational design [begin italics] and [end italics] great people to carry it out. Neither can make up for the lack of the other."However different companies in service industries may be in most respects, Ton has identified what those among them that have a good jobs strategy share in common. She calls it the "Virtuous Cycle of Retailing" which has four interdependent, mutually supportive components: High Labor Budgets > Good Quality and Quantity of Labor > Good Operational Execution > High Store Sales and Profits > High Labor Budgets > etc. It is important to note that, for those who follow the good jobs strategy, labor costs are in fact an [begin italics] investment [end investment] that -- as the cycle suggests -- results in hiring better people who, in turn, run more efficient and more productive operations that, in turn, generate high store sales and profits, and that makes hiring better people not only an investment but a very smart investment.Consider Walmart and Costco. The Walmart mantra is something like this: "We need to run a really efficient operation because customers come to us for low prices." The choice is clear: Improving jobs would mean either that Walmart would make less money or that customers would have to pay more. Wrong. "The assumed trade-off between low prices and good jobs is a fallacy. There is, in fact, a good jobs strategy, even in low-cost retail, that combines high investment in employees with a set of operational decisions that deliver value to employees, customers, and investors." Over a ten-year period, Costco's index share price tripled Walmart's.Ton shares the nine principles of Mercadona's Total Quality Model (TQM) to which the supermarket chain has been committed since 1993 when then president and CEO, Juan Roig, pressed for their adoption: Everyone is reliable, anything that does not provide value to customers is not done, every company is an assembly line, have a scientific mind, do it right the first time -- zero defects, everything can be improved, the company has to prescribe and endorse only what is best, abide the law, and convince rather than conquer. Mercadona's employees have the best benefits in the industry as do QuikTrip's: "All receive a range of benefits, including a Christmas bonus, tuition reimbursement, free fountain drinks and coffee when on duty, and an employee assistance program to help with personal problems. All employees can benefit from the QuickTrip Cares Employee Disaster Fund, dedicated to helping employees who are affected by natural disasters or life-altering energies such as a house fire, an accident, or a sudden illness in the family."How do employees respond to a good jobs strategy? Here are two incidents that occurred at a Trader Vic's store. Ready to check out, a customer realized that she had left her wallet home. The cashier paid and then said, "Just pay me back next time you're here." At another store, a customer was a dollar short and about to remove an item when the cashier reached into his pocket for the dollar. "Pay it forward and have a great day."Zeynep Ton offers an abundance of real-world support for the good jobs strategy, one that can be of substantial value to everyone involved, not only in services industries but in all organizations with a human community of stakeholders. "The good job strategy is difficult, but it is possible, profitable, and very much worth the effort." My own opinion is that now and in years to come, this strategy -- if executed properly -- can achieve a decisive competitive advantage. Everything needed to make that happen is in this book

Maybe it was to see if anyone could actually explain the current climate of the retail workplace.Author Ton actually did a good job of explaining the current climate of the retail workplace and the pursuit of 'low costs/high profits' doesn't have to be the cornerstone of this part of the jobs market. Most of us have had to work at some level of retail, be it a fast food restaurant or a store. Whether surviving a lunch rush or a Christmas season, it is tough work that often doesn't pay very well. I especially appreciated Ton's reasoning that a sales associate in grocery store has decisions to make that can't be automated. Many retail jobs are like that. You can't automate or standardize everything but you can create an environment where the employee has disciplined responses to elevate performance which often creates a good experience for the customer. It is things like that and how Ton explained it that I appreciated. She illustrates the differences between the companies that are profitable but at an expense of the employee and/or consumer and companies that invest in employees and that investment is passed on to the consumer and stockholders. There is no one magic formula but there are enough examples that it indicates that the cycle can be broken. An enlightening, surprisingly quick read. Definitely glad that I picked it out to read even if I can't remember exactly why I did.

By WhereWaldoFindsHimself Zeynep Ton does a logical job of explaining this strategy for changing business operations to convert from Mordor-style victimization of employees and perfunctory customer service to models of stability, excellence, and satisfaction of employees and customers while still holding to low prices. She makes it clear that evidence shows this can be done and is being done in the United States and other countries like Spain; that it is a CHOICE which good businesses can make and succeed with, even in the worst economy and despite competition.Since it seems doubtful that Walmart plans to implement these changes anytime soon, it becomes imperative for you to support those businesses who have a different worldview; who show staggeringly low numbers of employee turnover, like Mercadona, with just 3.4%. Like Costco, QuikTrip, Trader Joe's, and others who provide a living wage, normalized work schedule and benefits to their employees, while also giving you low prices and great customer service. Want to stop the enslavement of yourselves and your neighbors? Here's the way.
