A beautiful, radiant girl is swept aside when she has to start wearing glasses. It was not usual for ladies to sport specs and the term "men don't make passes at girls that wear glasses" was not only true in the 19th-century but generally believed. A fun story especially when she goes blind and can no longer see herself. A nobleman refuses her but her steady companion loves her with or without the glasses. When I think of how fashionable glasses are today, it's almost unbelievable. Of course, the glasses at that time were anything but attractive, according to Mr. James.

McGrath Maurice TiernayReading Charles Lever's Maurice Tiernay: Soldier of Fortune was a pleasant surprise. I had never heard of Lever before this but he was a contemporary of Charles Dickens and was a best selling author during his time but is mostly forgotten today. It's a shame because he writes so well.Maurice Tiernay is one of those rare pieces of fiction that tell the French side of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. We are inundated with stories from the English side, ironic considering the relatively small role the British played in those wars.Anyway, the title character is the son of a former member of Garde du Corps, one of the guards of Louis XVI. His father was guillotined and through many adventures, he is raised by a priest, escapes from the Bastille, joins the Revolutionary Army, ends up in the expedition to Ireland in 1798, then eventually the Siege of Genoa and other adventures in France, Bavaria and Austria. He even makes a foray to the fledgling United States.Like many Victorian novels it is long but it never drags and Tiernay grows as a character and a man, meeting many of the major personages of the day. He fights, falls in love, suffers, doubts himself. All the while he is torn between familial loyalty to royalty and loyalty to the new order of the Revolution and Napoleon. He manages to find a balance and rises high.There are some details modern readers of historical fiction might find a little missing, including a lack of detail in places, plus inaccuracies such as voltigeurs serving in the French Revolutionary armies, when they were a creation of the Napoleonic armies. They are minor detractions however and the joy of discovering a long lost writer who can write so well is well worth it—especially since his works are all in public domain and are free. A real treat! I intend to read some of his other works.

He lived with his grandfather (the Old Squire of the neighborhood) in Maine when the world was very different. They worked hard and were industrious and entepreneurial. The teens staying at the Old Squire's place were they to work hard and learn, but of course mischeif and humor were part of the bargain.Stephens writes in retrospect, in a less than choesive way, giving us vignettes of life during one year. Somehow the lack of cohesion does not detract. His experiences were delightful and I am glad to have been taken on the journey of that year with him.I would compare Stephens with Ralph Moody (Little Britches, et al), giving them both very high marks.

The only one thing that was not so good is the print is rather small. The stories were so good I would have worn magnifying glasses to read them! If the print was a bit larger, I would give it 5 stars.

This is very interesting. I have been thinking about this ever since. Not everyone knows how we see as them as our stress relievers. I don't believe I'm too old for this. Miscellaneous Aphorisms/The Soul of Man (annotated), by Oscar Wilde

About the Author Oscar Wilde was born on October 16, 1854, to the Irish nationalist and writer Speranza Wilde and the doctor William Wilde. After graduating from Oxford in 1878, Wilde moved to London, where he became notorious for his sharp wit and flamboyant style of dress. Though he was publishing plays and poems throughout the 1880s, it wasn t until the late 1880s and early 1890s that his work started to be received positively. In 1895, Oscar Wilde was tried for homosexuality and was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison. Tragically, this downfall came at the height of his career, as his plays, An Ideal Husband "and The Importance of Being Earnest, "were playing to full houses in London. He was greatly weakened by the privations of prison life, and moved to Paris after his sentence. Wilde died in a hotel room, either of syphilis or complications from ear surgery, in Paris, on November 30, 1900.

Wilde really had a way with words and attacking the conventions and pretensions of society, many of which have carried over from his age. Of course there are moments where he is contradictory with earlier aphorisms, and many of them fall apart under scrutiny, but these concerns were the furthest from his mind.Wilde had a tremendous control of the English language and was content to cut to ribbons whatever subject he sought fit.

In many places Pushkin tells the story in a slow and patient manner, so you can experience the subtle development of the characters' psychology. But sometimes this gradual development is completely taken out, and the story becomes much less poetic.

DeKalb This work is a brief chronicle of a man who develops a compulsion toward gambling, for none other than a superstitious reason. Driven by greed to deception and threatening, the stories anti-hero holds, in his very own hand, a fitting allegory - The Queen of Spades.I find it interesting that it's the German that `gets it' in this short Russian moral tale.This is the story of Tomsky's grandmother, an octogenarian of whom, it is said, has the power of prognostication when it comes to 3 cards in faro. It is stated that she'd helped a man some 60 years ago.Soon invested is Herman, a `German, therefore economical' who never touches a card and doesn't play faro (a gambling game where money is placed directly on a card to win or lose). After hearing the story he becomes rather obsessed, doing anything in his power to get close to the old woman. He beguiles her niece into letting him meet the `Countess', but in his impatience disregards the plans which were advised.SPOILERS:Scaring the death out of the Countess he gets the cards from her ghost `against (it's) will' - `the tray, seven and ace in succession'. Playing the cards, with their rules, in succession night after night after night, Herman is successful 66% of the time. The only exception to this being his last, most grand attempt to use the magic card.Not realizing he didn't have the ace in his hand, but the Queen of Spades on the final night, our Countesses vengeance is drawn when the dealer remarks `Your queen is killed.' Twitchell) By Joy Nwosu Lo-Bamijoko When you read the masters, you know what made them masters. This was a short read, precise, and right to the point. It didn’t go beating about the bush giving us long explanations of who the main character was, his background, or whereabouts. It just took us to the core of the story, the heart of it, and landed us where it wanted, without much ado.Herman thought he was smart. Smarter than the rest of them, but what he failed to know was that greed can lead to doom. He watched for an opportunity. He observed, waited, and in the end, he learnt what he thought he was waiting for. What he didn’t learn was the rules. His eyes were only aimed at the prize. In the end, greed has a way of turning good to evil. Read the story and find out how it ended. What I can assure you is that it is a jewel of a story.

I've been in Las Vegas with him along with other mutual friends. I have been able to watch what is written in his book come to life. One very important part of his book that has worked for me is after two or three rolls "ask the dealer to put the OFF button on". Believe me it will change your game.

A nice story to go along with the instructive lessons and a quick easy read but full of info. It is easy to see how you can apply these ideas to you play. Almost as if the guru was instructing you, not the person in the book. I think craps is a great game and this book puts a different perspective on betting that I never considered. Many craps books give the same advice to the point where it is almost the same text------but not this one. If you want a whole different perspective on craps and how to play better than you now are doing, read this book.

Nunn This book is the final of the Katy series.There's not much about Katy this time - mostly Clover, as in the 4th book "Clover", but it is an excellent end to the series.It is set about 6 years after the end of "Clover", so there are a few surprises in characters - nice surprises.Well worth reading if you can get a copy. The printing and formatting of this edition is a little disappointing, and makes the book a little hard to read.

In a spell of nostalgia I reread the series and..... loved every one of the stories yet again. I have no hesitation in saying that the joy of reading books wherein I have no fear of cuss words OR any sexual activities leaves me in a euphoria of contentment. These books are undeniably educational and have the added bliss of being beautifully written. Ah for a return of innocence and delight in the striving for true goodness.

That doesn't account for the thousands of other emails stored away in various files. Author Dewan Bayney's book is short, sweet, zero fluff and to the point. He gives practical strategies for keeping a clutter free inbox.I decided to follow his instructions to the letter ... and two weeks later all my in-boxes are clutter free and with zero emails in them at least once a day.Kudos to this book.

Schwarz Describes a geodesic work done by a joint Russian-English team in Southern Africa that is suddenly disturbed by the Krimean war. The story reflects of course the attitude of Jules Verne's days on racism, hunting, and colonialism. If you can suspend your gut reactions to that, it is quite enjoyable. Especially, if you read it, like I did, in order to brush up on my French.

Of the following essays, five are new, and were written for this volume. They are the paper on Mr. R. L. Stevenson, the “Letter to a Young Journalist,” the study of Mr. Kipling, the note on Homer, and “The Last Fashionable Novel.” The article on the author of “Oh, no! we never mention Her,” appeared in the New York Sun, and was suggested by Mr. Dana, the editor of that journal. The papers on Thackeray and Dickens were published in Good Words, that on Dumas appeared in Scribner’s Magazine, that on M. Théodore de Banville in The New Quarterly Review. The other essays were originally written for a newspaper “Syndicate.” They have been re-cast, augmented, and, to a great extent, re-written.

About the Author Andrew Lang (March, 31, 1844 July 20, 1912) was a Scottish writer and literary critic who is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. Lang s academic interests extended beyond the literary and he was a noted contributor to the fields of anthropology, folklore, psychical research, history, and classic scholarship, as well as the inspiration for the University of St. Andrew s Andrew Lang Lectures. A prolific author, Lang published more than 100 works during his career, including twelve fairy books, in which he compiled folk and fairy tales from around the world. Lang s Lilac Fairy and Red Fairy books are credited with influencing J. R. R. Tolkien, who commented on the importance of fairy stories in the modern world in his 1939 Andrew Lang Lecture On Fairy-Stories.

Published 1891.The topics range fromAlexandre Dumas, Mr. Stevenson's works, Homer and the Study of Greek, The Last Fashionable Novel, Thackeray, Dickens,toAdventures of Buccaneers, The Sagas, Charles Kingsley, etc, etc.Who but myself has a taste for old essays? I hadn't even heard of Andrew Lang before I started searching for "essays" in the Kindle store.These essays are fine- almost boyish in their enthusiasm and playfulness- "The Last Fashionable Novel" is a mash up of Ouida and James Fenimore Cooper, the point of which I'm sure I missed- but I still liked the parody. His essays of Buccaneers and Sagas- well, who but an overgrown boy would write essays on buccaneers and sagas?:".. For the wise world, which reads newspapers all day and half the night, does not care much for books, still less for good books, least of all for old books. You can make no money out of reading Sagas: they have nothing to say about stocks and shares, nor about Prime Ministers and politics. Nor will they amuse a man, if nothing amuses him but accounts of races and murders, or gossip about Mrs. Nokes's new novel, Mrs. Stokes's new dresses, or Lady Jones's diamonds. The Sagas only tell how brave men--of our own blood very likely--lived, and loved, and fought, and voyaged, and died, before there was much reading or writing, when they sailed without steam, travelled without railways, and warred hand-to-hand, not with hidden dynamite and sunk torpedoes. But, for stories of gallant life and honest purpose, the Sagas are among the best in the world."

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Best of the best By Storybook fan I've just begun reading Ms. Hill's books and am enjoying the journey. This particular story drew me in from the first page, and I loved it immensely. Michael is so honorable and selfless that it's impossible not to get on his bandwagon for helping his chums from his childhood and improve their lot. His love for Starr is pure and selfless as well. I loved the read so much that I would tell my husband about it each day, and he got to where he'd ask me what happened next. The final several chapters we actually read to each other and savored the ending together. We've never done that with any other book. This one was that special. The proverbial "must read."

I am not a crier, but I found my emotions touched by this beautiful story. One can almost see the author's love for humankind shining through. The main character was a wonderful man, suitable for being a hero to any little boy. I think the author truly must have been inspired to write such a magnificent piece of literature. This book was so good, I wish that everybody could truly appreciate it like I do. I have several friends who have also discovered the beauty in this long-forgotten book. I am hoping to read more of this author
