About the Author Thornton Waldo Burgess (1874-1965). Born in Sandwich, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, he was a conservationist and author of children's stories. Thornton Waldo Burgess loved the beauty of nature and its living creatures so much that he wrote about them for 50 years. By the time he retired, he had written more than 170 books and 15,000 stories for daily columns in newspapers.

By rain forest critter Even though on the sample page online Burgess refers to the beautiful and accurate illustrations of birds - they are completely missing in this edition! It was hugely disappointing and reveals a lack of understanding about the purpose of the book in the first place. The book was intended to be an introduction to bird identification and lore for children. It is not a simple story book - not at all! Burgess' entertaining and excellent writing, of course, remains.... I have no argument with Burgess - it is simply that half his material was left out of this publication without any notation in the description of the book that the illustrations had been deleted.

I have 5 children and wanted to pass on this love. They were only slightly interested until I read this book to them. The intermingling of story and fact is just enough to keep even my young ones interested.Peter Rabbit is the main character. He goes around to the various habitats discovering the different birds. He wants especially to know where the nest is, and how many young they have. Jenny Wren is also a main character. She is little Miss-Know-it-All. The fact that she is characterized as somewhat "snooty" helped my kids remember that a good identifier to wrens is their upturned tails.Recently on a bird hike we spotted a cow bird. Our instructor began to explain the cowbirds nesting habits. My children were able to help explain as they had remembered it from The Burgess Bird Book for Children. As an avid birder and a Mom that was a great thrill. A lesson learned and all from a simple story.I recommed taking your time reading this to your children. A chapter here and there. We've been reading ours for over a year as time allows and as interests peak....especially in fall and spring as more birds migrate. I also recommend giving the kids an identifier book as you read. As soon as the name of the bird is revealed in each chapter the kids race to see who can find the bird first.

Especially recommended as a read-aloud tool for parents By Midwest Book Review Thornton Burgess' stories 'interview' typical birds for kids, using these interviews to teach the basics on different common birds' appearances, behavior, eating and songs. His classic appeared in 1919 to much acclaim, and Dover's economy-minded paperwork reprint offers new generations the same introduction. The Burgess Bird Book For Children is especially recommended as a read-aloud tool for parents.

THE BEST YET By grandkids a plenty I have tried several of the other Klooto books and was interested in trying this newest addition...I've given several of the other Klooto books to friends as gifts. WELL! This is so clever and such fun. Once you get the drift of how to tackle the puzzles you won't be able to but it down.."Just one more word." Dinner can wait! I LOVE this book and knowing the answers are available in the back keeps me from getting stressed if I'm stumped. So throw away those boring puzzles you get in the paper each day and try these instead. A real winner and now I'll have all these quotes that I can throw out in conversation making people think I'm very intelligent.

It was insightful, irreverent, angry, tragic, funny, bizarre, gothic and wonderfully honest. At the time, the novel was harshly criticized by men, even feminist men like George Eliot's lover. But George Eliot herself and Virginia Wolf believed it to be her best work.How unusual first of all to have a heroine like Lucy Snowe, not of noble blood, not rich, not charming, not even good-looking as women (esp in the Victorian period) were expected to be. Like the other characters, she is flawed, contradictory and multi-faceted in a way one rarely sees in literature but continually witnesses in real life. Yet she is decidedly brilliant, original and imaginative like no other. Unconventional and delightfully subversive!In many ways, this is a truly modern novel to this day. I've never read a novel that so honestly and unflinchingly captures the plight of a woman-artist making her own way in the world despite the obstacles thrown in her path.

An interesting introduction to Charlotte Bronte By Nick One of the advantages of having the Kindle is that you can have access to all this amazing classical literature that you'd never buy. Villette by Charlotte Bronte is one of those. There are two Kindle free books of Villette, both are identical, so it doesn't matter which one you download.The book's plot is quite interesting: You follow Lucy Snowe though her teens into her early 20s. She's not a typical heroine: she's a plain looking, average woman - sort of the anti-Austen stereotype. Lucy doesn't even have self esteem, but manages to flee England and moves to the European mainland.Being my first Bronte novel, it's wildly delicious. The characters are flawed, there's tragedy and particularly wonderful moments. It does make you wonder how much of the book is autobiographical, and you feel a sense of loss because the Brontes were taken from us too soon before they could complete more works. You're sucked into the isolation of Lucy and in a way, that's more interesting than the plot.Other and more talented reviewers can give you a better review of Villette (Signet Classics) than I can. But this book is a worthy download, and will bring you into a unique literary world and make you adore the creativity of the Brontes.

Enchanting, honest novel By Linda Wellesley I highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates raw human emotion with exceptional imagery to guide the reader through the thoughtful text. After reading Jane Eyre, I felt compelled to explore other Bronte works and found this to be the true masterpiece. Although at times not as accessible as Eyre, Villette is more sincere. There are no gothic mysteries to cloud the writing, instead just a very real account of what seems to be an autobiography of Bronte's life.The first time I read this it seemed a bit difficult to get through, but I guarantee you will not be disappointed. It is very brooding, with nothing to hide the main character's insecurity that very much parallels that of Charlotte Bronte. There is a magic in this book that is not describable, and ranks at the top of my list of favorites!

About the Author Oscar Wilde was born on October 16, 1854, to the Irish nationalist and writer Speranza Wilde and the doctor William Wilde. After graduating from Oxford in 1878, Wilde moved to London, where he became notorious for his sharp wit and flamboyant style of dress. Though he was publishing plays and poems throughout the 1880s, it wasn t until the late 1880s and early 1890s that his work started to be received positively. In 1895, Oscar Wilde was tried for homosexuality and was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison. Tragically, this downfall came at the height of his career, as his plays, An Ideal Husband "and The Importance of Being Earnest, "were playing to full houses in London. He was greatly weakened by the privations of prison life, and moved to Paris after his sentence. Wilde died in a hotel room, either of syphilis or complications from ear surgery, in Paris, on November 30, 1900.

There is a table of contents, however there is no pagination nor are any of the poems titled. Anyone new to the author's work could accidentally assume this book consists of one extremely long poem. The print quality and absence of pagination I can get over, the fact that none of the poems are titled is just irritating.

So I started reading this thinking I had a few things to sell and I wanted to avoid the garage sale. Im glad I ran into Claire's proven tips before I started trying to post some of my items which I thought would be an easy sale. I'm still not sure if im going to start ebaying part time, but my expectations will be kept in check, which will help me not give up when/if I start. I have to think through the time commitment to see if I'm going in all in. Before reading Ms. Campbell's "Profiting from Ebay" I thought all I had to do was throw a picture of my suit and label up and a low price and it would sell in seconds. Very helpful book and easy to follow, with GREAT examples (specially the suit one).

By michael muniz While searching for a book about selling on EBAY I found a treasure in Claire Campbells Profiting from ebay. Exactly what I needed know to get started. While there is a lot more to learn I feel like I have a firm foundation to start building on with the information in her book. I like how she walks you through the selling process. I'm kind of a slow learner so I appreciate the detailed explanations. I will read again and probably take notes this time and will definitely keep as a reference book. One of the things i liked about the book is where Claire talks about caring for her customers and when looking for items to sell, think about how they will feel when they open the package, If it were you would you be happy with it. I like the idea of buying and selling items that are different from what you could could go down to the store and buy anytime and the only reason you buy on ebay is to get a better price. I think I will searched for those types of items that bring back a memory or help create a memory like the bamboo carving set she talks about. Thank you Claire I'm really inspired and I hope you continue to share you knowledge of being a part time seller on ebay.

A lot of suggestions of what to do and what not to do to make a profit. This is an easy read with deep implications of how to be successful. There are a tone of tips in this books that has proven to be helpful to make a profit from selling. I really appreciated the chapter on customer service. 9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. One of the best books you'll ever read! By Books In My Spare Time I am a big fan of E.P. Roe's books, and this is my favorite.It portrays a youn man who rises above his faulty upbringing and above serious trouble to become a true Knight of the 19th century. After ending up in prison through embezzelment, and then being turned away from every house in the city but two, he becomes a Christian and manages through hard work and faithfulness to prove himself to everyone, and later goes through the Civil War and comes back a hero. This is a must read- it's a fascinating story, and very encouraging as well. He also happens to be what I consider the "ideal" man. :-)

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a children's novel written by L. Frank Baum and illustrated by W. W. Denslow. Originally published by the George M. Hill Company in Chicago on May 17, 1899, it has since been reprinted numerous times, most often under the name The Wizard of Oz, which is the name of both the popular 1902 Broadway musical and the well-known 1939 film adaptation. The story chronicles the adventures of a young girl named Dorothy Gale in the Land of Oz, after being swept away from her Kansas farm home in a cyclone. The novel is one of the best-known stories in American popular culture and has been widely translated. Its initial success, and the success of the 1902 Broadway musical which Baum adapted from his original story, led to Baum's writing thirteen additional Oz books. The original book has been in the public domain in the US since 1956. Baum dedicated the book "to my good friend & comrade, My Wife", Maud Gage Baum. In January 1901, George M. Hill Company completed printing the first edition, which totaled 10,000 copies.

Carlson This was a gift to my daughter who has loved all things "Wizard of Oz" since she was 5 years old, when I watched it with her and her siblings when NBC aired the film on TV in1968. She has watched it every time she knew it would be on TV since and, of course, now has the DVD. However, the only book she had was "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" and she expressed the desire over the years to read all the books. So, I decided to finally fulfill that desire. The books are great and she said she started to read the first one as soon as she opened the package. However, the sleeve in which the books are encased was not so great. It was dented at the corners and coming loose at all the edges. She taped them together with packing tape as it wasn't important enough for her to want to return the set. It's the books that count, she said, not the shell, and none of the books was damaged.

I never realized there were 15 some-odd books in the entire Oz series, fun surprise that & I'm immensely looking forward to starting the series once my reading list clears up a little (I'm one of those crazies who often reads multiple books at once). I've heard some complaints about the box the books come in being very battered looking, however, I haven't had that problem. I'm sure as time goes on I'll have to tape it up to help it avoid wear & tear, but I have not grumbles about the packaging. I grew up reading part of the Oz series when I was much younger & have wanted to find a non-Omnibus set for a while (omnibus being the great big books that combine several books into one). The cover art is very cute for its young audience.

She has a vivid imagination and loves all things related to the Wizard of Oz. We read a chapter or two each night before bedtime and have completed over half of the first book so far. Here are some things worth noting:- It's very evident this book was written in the early 1900s. The sentences are very long with lots of commas and semi-colons and can be difficult to read aloud at times.- The 15th book in this series was not written by L. Frank Baum. It was written by Ruth Plumly Thompson, following the death of Mr. Baum. (Not a big deal, but worth a mention.)- I love that each story is its own book. It is easier to curl up with a small book rather than a large one with multiple stories.- The print is a good size. It's not too large, but not too small.- Yes, as other reviewers have mentioned, the box is flimsy. Ours ripped the first day out of the packaging.- I was hoping for artwork similar to the cover art would be scattered throughout the book. However, this is not the case. The cover artwork is adorable!

Schneider When I start reading an unfamiliar text by James, I often need to read the first sentence or paragraph 3 or 4 times before I even understand what the man is talking about. It is almost as if he built a protective wall around his territory. That wall has more than once repelled me and made me pick up another book. Once I have climbed over that wall, though, I am usually drawn in like a moth to a lamp. His language becomes addictive and his psychological finesse and social sarcasm become a highly delightful and pleasurable way of wasting my time. (After all, that's what reading fiction is for,isn't it? In the end it just depends on the standard that you have built up for yourself.)Georgina is a long story of 64 pages in the LoA edition. It tells us of a couple that does not seem to have worked well as a couple.The man in the couple, a navy officer without other means than his meager pay, has befriended a NY beauty from a wealthy family. The family rejects him as a suitor, but the woman marries him despite that, in a strange act of rebellion. Her rebellion is a secret one: she marries him secretly. He has to pledge that he will not disclose the secret unless she lets him. He accepts. Then she holds it against him: he should have protested stronger. (Don't I know that kind of trap? Luckily not in such a serious case as this.)The man had misgivings from the start, but then there was a period of happy times. The happiness did not last. He never felt that he really understood her.Georgina is not easily understood. She is one of a history of Jamesian women with odd motives and behaviors, but she is not like Daisy Miller or Isabelle Archer. She is not just odd and unadjusted, she is a cold blooded devil. Her poor husband gets to understand that over the years. She has trapped him in a cage of confidentiality, which lets her behave with complete freedom. His antiquated sense of honor keeps him from exposing her for her crimes. By any standard she deserves to be in jail rather than in an upper class NY residence.What a weird story.

It was a large, soft-back type-written "book", fairly small print, over-sized pages. I know what a book is when I see one and this one wasn't it. I didn't even read it. I guess it was one of those computer-generated "books" that I've heard about but I'm not interested. AMAZON, take note. I order a lot of books from you-make sure you don't send one of these my way again. I will not be happy. And if you do not include a notice that a book is this type of "book", I would suggest that you reconsider.

I felt a lot of compassion for Don, I was really rooting for him. I'm starting the sequel now. This was the most interesting and ridiculous bunch of people you'll encounter in a long, long time!
