This book is a collection of illustrated limericks which comment on the bizarre incoherence which many now perceive in their daily lives. Though a scholarly and erudite work could be written on the way this has arisen through the history of ideas in the West since Late Antiquity, it is easier to see what's wrong by considering small but pithy vignettes of modern life and thought. The limerick serves very well to this end. Here is an example, not included in the book, which treats a very topical problem. Q.E.D. Central banks are all doing easing, Lending cash to the rich, whilst just squeezing The ordinary folk, Who'll end stony broke, And leave the economy wheezing. In the book, you will find deeper philosophical and spiritual problems addressed which themselves may underlie these economic problems we experience. Each is illustrated with a line drawing to help to make the point. The craziness out there can best be seen in the light of Traditional Christianity from which our culture derives. In this light, it is not only bizarre, but often wildly funny, and sometimes utterly dreadful. We need to start from something solid to avoid incoherence. If there is to be a happy ending to all this, we need to reflect on our lives and see how they could be grounded more firmly in the Tradition from which we spring. May God help us all.

Just on the edge of the prairie, in western Iowa, some thirty years since, stood a cabin covering quite a little ground, but only one story high. It was humble enough as a home, but not more so than the early homes of some who have become great. Let us enter.

By Felicity Barrington This review is not for the cynics and others who hate America, (whether they live here or not): There are many of us who still believe in the 'American Dream'. Who see in America as a land of opportunity, where a person may make what he wants of himself. This is the reason for the success of movies like the Secret, and books like Think and Grow Rich. Haters of this concept don't believe in the philosophy of 'if it's to be; it's up to me' and personal growth- they believe in the 'it's not my responsibility to be successful, it's the governments, or a union, etc' to make things right. For those of us who DO believe in America and what it stands for, we need to relax from time to time, from our dedicated path to success. From time to time, I like to read a novel or two, to unwind, but there are so few are positive, uplifting, and compelling novels that also promote personal growth and success principles. So finding one or two is GREAT NEWS! However I have made a wonderful discover of a new and magnificently published selection of Horatio Alger books, so now we don't just have one or two, but many, many hours ahead of us to relax, recharge and at the same time instill in ourselves the success principles we all know and love! The Young Bank Messenger is one of my favorites: In this story, Ernest ends up cheated of his late father's legacy, so he must overcome beginning life 'without' and strikes out on his own. He moves to the city, and through hard work and practicing lots of success principles, ends up at a bank, and later very successful - with a great ending as he confronts those who stole his inheritance. Ernest shows how following persistence, & 'strive and succeed' principles that Alger promoted he became a success. A real page-turner, powerful characters, dramatic plot, and full of adventure - in short - you'll love it!

A Treasure I Uncovered After Forty Years By Book Nerd Mom5 When I was a kid in the sixties, we spent most Sundays at Grandma’s house with bunches of aunts, uncles and cousins. Since there were no girl cousins near my age, sometimes I got bored and would bring a book to read. Once Sunday I regrettably had forgotten to bring a book, so Grandma took me into her bedroom, deep into her closet and found a book for me. It was old and not very pretty, and the pages were yellow and about to fall apart. I started reading anyway, and boy it was worth it!This treasure is called The Young Bank Messenger by Horatio Alger, Jr. I think this book was made all the more intriguing to me because it was so old and Grandma found it in the back of her closet. No doubt it had belonged to one of my aunts or uncles, or even my dad. I never did ask him. The copyright says 1898 by Henry T Coates & Co. By the time Mom and Dad were ready for us to leave Grandma’s that Sunday, I was hooked and did not want to stop reading. Grandma said I could just have that book, she had no use for it and was glad she had a grandchild that wanted it……. So I took it home and had the pleasure of finishing it.Over forty years later, I still think fondly of that book. When I was married and left home, I brought that book with me. It is now buried upstairs in a closet piled with books and other stuff that my husband and I could not part with from our childhood. Someday I am going to clean out that closet and will find it, but honestly it would probably take a whole day just to take everything out of that closet. When that day comes, I will probably find many other book treasures. I was delighted to find this book available for the Kindle and have had the pleasure of reading it again after all these years. The Young Bank Messenger is still every bit as good as I remembered it. It appears that the setting of this book takes place in the time that it was actually written, which was 1898. Ernest Ray, the hero of the story is sixteen years old and lives in a cabin in Iowa when he finds out that Peter Brant, the “uncle” who has raised him is not really an uncle, but was a servant in Ernest’s father’s home. On his deathbed, Peter tells Ernest that an unscrupulous cousin connived to receive the inheritance that rightfully should have gone to Ernest.Ernest has many exciting adventures that take him across the country from Iowa and eventually to the west coast and then the east coast. He meets quite an assortment of people, and even gets deeply involved with some bank robbers. Through all of his adventures, Ernest always does the right, honest thing, even when being bad would be so much easier and more beneficial. I am not sure if The Young Bank Messenger was written for children or adults, but I loved reading it both as a young teen and again as an adult. Ernest is a good role model for kids. I have encouraged my grandchildren to read this.

Thorsson Horatio Alger books, these are novels that are appeal to those like me who read Think and Grow Rich, and any other older money making books they are `rags to riches stories'My family has really gotten hooked on Alger. These wonderful stories are so powerful today in this economic climate. Back when they were written, there were no stimulus packages, no welfare as we know it, no food stamps, no income tax! Yet, today there is still such despair, that I feel it's very much the same....So having said that, this book is great for two reasons:1) its shows a method and mindset for success! It's not just a story, but the story explains the thinking and mindset of the hero who overcomes terrible odds to find success. The mindset explained is as powerful then as it is today.2) while the story is fiction, the hero figures out a way to succeed - it of course depends on factor 1 above, his mindset, but, once we see how his mind works, he thinks of a plan to become successful - and what I like is the principles that are used are not like typical fiction, but of ways and means that anyone could use to become successful, good business ideas that are still on target for today! This book is great for readers of any age, young or old, as long as you need a lift, and you want something powerful and good in your life, you will enjoy this great work by Alger! It's all about Mindset and Alger knows how to paint a picture of success!

Now and then the accustomed world turns a somersault; one day it faces you with familiar features, the next it wears a quite unrecognizable countenance. The experience is, of course, nothing new, though it is to be doubted whether it was ever staged so dramatically and on so vast a scale as during the past four years. And no one to whom it happens is ever the same afterward.

By Teresa Durham The Camerons at Highboro is about Elliot Cameron, a high class young lady used to getting her own way. During World War I, she has to go to her Uncle Robert Cameron's farm in Vermont while her father is away for one year in France doing aid work with the military. She arrives at the Camerons', after doing everything she could to arrange otherwise. She learns how they sustain a large farm by themselves. After asking around about the feelings of the workers, her eyes are opened to new possibilities besides jolly good times. She realizes the Camerons are making a difference in the war, from canning to farming. She is a help to the soldiers by not being selfish and taking up resources like sugar and luxuries she was accustomed to. While she may have wished to go overseas with her father, she turns out to be content on the Cameron farm. Learning she is maybe not as much of a priority she thought she was and that she could be counted on in times of need givers her immense satisfaction and confidence in herself.

By Steve Bureau My wife used to say that she thought my desk at home was made of paper, because that’s all she could see. I am a writer, so I have ideas, drafts, letters, not to mention bills, and other important paperwork like insurance policies. I always wanted them at arm’s length because I didn’t want to lose them. My brother-in-law told me about Evernote, but I didn’t get it. There was so much to learn and turning all of my paperwork into electronic copy was complicated and scary. But this book walked me through the process and helped me to begin going paperless. I’m not there completely, but this book gave me the roadmap to getting there. A must-read if you need to get organized!

The Crux, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

Review “What a treat to have another Gilman novel—until now largely ignored—available. We are indebted to Duke University Press for publishing it as a separate piece and to Dana Seitler for her provocative and stimulating introduction. The Crux is in many ways a period piece embodying what today seems outmoded and sometimes outrageous views. Oddly, these same views are also startlingly and wickedly relevant today.”—Ann J. Lane, author of To Herland and Beyond: The Life and Work of Charlotte Perkins Gilman “With reproductive technologies at the center of feminist, medical, and national debate, The Crux offers a fascinating historical perspective on the relationship of reproduction and nationalism. Dana Seitler's introduction offers a useful context in which to read Charlotte Perkins Gilman's quirky, biology-based feminism, her depiction of a women's community in the west, and, generally, the relationship between fiction-writing and the fashioning of gender roles that fueled Gilman's particular brand of activism.”—Priscilla Wald, author of Constituting Americans: Cultural Anxiety and Narrative Form

Essential, entertaining reading for Gilman fans By A Customer The Crux is essential reading for anyone seriously interested in the writings of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and Jennifer S. Tuttle's is to be commended for bringing it to readers in this excellent edition. After having read most of Gilman's other fiction, I will admit that I put off reading this one because of its reputation as "the book about venereal disease" (sexually transmitted diseases). I feared it would be didactic, heavy handed, and depressing. Instead, it's like the best of Gilman's "optimistic reform" books: it treats its serious subject with a light touch, conveying its important ideas through appealing characters and a strong plot with Gilman's typical "happy ending." (Some readers might argue that the ending is a bit implausible, but that's part of the interest of this set of Gilman's writings.) At times, it is laugh-out-loud funny. Also, it's not entirely accurate to say that the book is "about" venereal disease, for although the last third of the book discusses the dangers women faced from sexually transmitted diseases in the years before adequate cures had been discovered, there is much more to the story. It portrays the opportunities for self discovery open to women who move from the stultifying conditions of New England villages to the open life in a new city in the Colorado mountains. The women characters (on whom the story focuses) range from young unmarried women to a seemingly dried-up old maid, a woman doctor, and one of literature's most delightful grandmothers. My only serious objection to this edition is that University of Delaware Press, for some unaccountable reason, has elected to publish this book only in an expensive hardback edition. The story, along with Tuttle's illuminating introduction and clear explanatory notes, would be highly suitable as a teaching text if the book were available in a reasonably-priced paper edition.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Should be studied more often By Monica Rico _The Crux_ isn't "great literature" but it is well worth reading for the insight into Charlotte Perkins Gilman's thinking about sexuality, gender, and health. In this text, you can trace some of the elements of her belief in eugenics, intertangled with her conviction that women should have satisfying careers and independent lives. In other words, as with so many of Gilman's contemporaries, the ideas that we think of as "progressive" and "reactionary" were, in this era, mutually constitutive. _The Crux_ makes for fascinating reading and lively discussion.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Recommended read, it's always interesting to see where Gilman ... By Liz C This is a fairly quick read of a book, longer than Gilman's usual short story, but not something that would take weeks to read either. This particular copy is a bit different than most books. This one is a reprint of a "historic book" which in this case seems to mean the original page numbers happen to be in the middle of paragraphs, sentences and sometimes even words. It's a bit distracting at first, but you get used to it after a page or two. Each page is laid out in three columns, and the whole thing is the size of a composition notebook, though not nearly as thick. If that layout would distract you, there are other printings available in "regular" paperback size, some are even anthologies. Recommended read, it's always interesting to see where Gilman went with her various works.

The two downsides are:The puzzles don't have the "fill in the answer table", which I use for harder puzzles to figure them out.The first 50 or so puzzles are SUPER easy. But the puzzles do get SIGNIFICANTLY harder, so I use the easy puzzles as like a break from the extremely hard ones.

It is one big huge book of 2 Star, Easy Level Logic Problems, that's all.For what it is, I can't complain, but for being so big, you'd think they would provide more of a variety.

In the latter days of July in the year 185––, a most important question was for ten days hourly asked in the cathedral city of Barchester, and answered every hour in various ways—Who was to be the new bishop? The death of old Dr. Grantly, who had for many years filled that chair with meek authority, took place exactly as the ministry of Lord –––– was going to give place to that of Lord ––––. The illness of the good old man was long and lingering, and it became at last a matter of intense interest to those concerned whether the new appointment should be made by a conservative or liberal government. It was pretty well understood that the outgoing premier had made his selection and that if the question rested with him, the mitre would descend on the head of Archdeacon Grantly, the old bishop's son.

It's second person, but I enjoy Trollope's occasional respites to address his readers. No violence or sexual content, but still good. My only frustration is that Mr. Harding is such a wuss! Quite articulate and generally amiable and admirable, but a wuss who frustrates me as often, and almost as much, as he does his son-in-law. Thanks to Amazon for the free Kindle version.

Had trouble at first adjusting to the introduction of quite a few characters, but soon sorted them all out and became interested in the intricacies of their relationships and the outcome of the plot. Recommended.

They never deny me a good chuckle or two.You have to stop and think about the thought process some people possess. I don’t know how in the world they think they can get away with being so stupid. They sure do keep us sane people laughing though. There were a few stories that made me laugh out loud and I shared them with my husband. He got a chuckle too.I received this book for free in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions in this review are 100% my own.

Birdsong continues his humorous series with his usual wit and personality shining through. The book contains short paragraphs detailing a bit of information from the criminal adventure--along with a comment or two from Birdsong. The book may be read in short bursts of time--especially when you need an eye-rolling, smile inducing "lift" to your day.Would I recommend 117 Dumbest Criminal Stories: The Southwest? The stories in this collection will make you smile--and wonder, not only why, but HOW such crimes even happen! If you enjoy reading about stupid human tricks--the entire 117 Dumbest Criminal Stories series should be on your list. I did not laugh out loud as much at the antics of the criminals featured in this book as I did in some of the past books from the series--but, I enjoyed several eye rolls and moments of pause as I wondered just why (and often how) some of the reports happened at all!I received a complimentary copy of this book for use in a blog review. All opinions are my own.

Not as good as the others By Kristin Plausky I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.I have read a few of the author's books, and each one is the same: stories put together of the stupidest criminal stories. Most of the time, I enjoy his books. They are full of quick little blurbs of criminal stories that leave you scratching your head. Some of them are caught, like the convict who decided to jump the barbed wire fence and left his underwear and jumpsuit hanging on there, only to be caught in his pink socks, and nothing else....However, this time there were stories in there that weren't criminal activity, but certainly Darwin award-worthy. For instance, the Pastafarian guy who convinced the DMV to allow him to take his license picture with a colander on his head, personally I am looking at the DMV supervisor who let that one through for a Darwin Award. It is a very quick book to read, and quite humorous, however, I think the author is grasping for stories to fill his quota.

The following extract explains how the manuscript of "Marie," and with it some others, one of which is named "Child of Storm," came into the hands of the Editor. It is from a letter, dated January 17th, 1909, and written by Mr. George Curtis, the brother of Sir Henry Curtis, Bart., who, it will be remembered, was one of the late Mr. Allan Quatermain's friends and companions in adventure when he discovered King Solomon's Mines, and who afterwards disappeared with him in Central Africa.

Rider Haggard that I've read, and I've read a good number of them. This is the tale of how Allan Quatermain, hero of 14 of Haggard's books, including "King Solomon's Mines," met his first wife. It is set against the time of the Great Trek in the 1830s, and is jammed with action, adventure and romance. There are two terrific villains, Dingaan (brother of Chaka) and a Portuguese who's trying to not only kill our hero, but rob him of his wife in the bargain. The book starts out with a thrilling battle scene, and ends with a scene of tremendous emotional intensity. In between there is so much colorful action and movement that you find yourself zipping through the chapters as quickly as you can. The book is a true "page turner," with great sweep and drive. The supporting characters are either colorful, comedic or memorable. Hans--Quatermain's Hottentot sidekick from many of the other books--is featured here, too, and his is always a welcome presence. What a shame that this book has been out of print for so many years, along with the great preponderance of the other works of this wonderful writer. Haggard has been called the greatest adventure fantasist of all time, and I would tend to agree with that assessment. So do yourself a favor and go to the trouble of seeking this book out. It will reward your efforts!

Allan Quartermain is just beginning his life and falls in love with Marie, the daughter of a Boer, descendants of the original Dutch settlers in South Africa, who hate the English. Allan on several occasions saves the life of Marie, her father and other Boer's and Marie's father never quite sees him as a friend. Allan interacts with real historical individuals, Dingane, current king of the Zulus and Piet Retief, leader of the Voortrekkers. We see a young Allan Quartermain turn into a man. He gains his Zulu name, Macumazahn, Watcher by Night. We learn why so many people respect him and his judgments. He witnesses an event that changes the course of South African history. We also briefly meet Zikali, the witchdoctor who later influences Allan's life in later in life. H. Rider Haggard wrote about 10 stories about Allan Quartermain, but not in chronological order. Sometimes his spelling of African names and terms changes between books. I enjoyed this novel and even thou this Character is over 100 years old he inspired so many modern day adventure heroes, including Indiana Jones.

Lee Though I read incessantly, this is the first time I have felt compelled to write a review of a product for Amazon. But I have so enjoyed reading H. Rider Haggard's Allan Quatermain series that I thought I would share my thoughts about it, in hopes that a new generation of readers (in particular those who are likely to discover him through the Kindle at the astronomically wonderful price of "free") might be compelled to give these wonderful tales a try and perhaps become lifelong fans. The first Allan Quatermain book written, and the most famous of the tales, King Solomon's Mines is also the first one I read. It was absolutely wonderful, exciting and fun and humorous in all the right proportions, and when I was done I decided to find out a little more about Haggard and the Allan Quatermain series. As such I soon found out that while "King Solomon's Mines" was the first Quatermain story to be written, in 1885, it was chronologically one of the last in what would become the Allan Quatermain series, and decided to read the rest of them in the chronological order of the character, rather than the order in which they were written. This book, "Marie", is chronologically the first book in the series, though it was actually written in 1912.In "King Solomon's Mines" Quatermain is already an older man, having lived a hard life in Africa as a professional big game hunter, the book taking place right around 1880. "Marie", on the other hand, takes place over the years of 1835-1838, and tells the tale of Allan's first love, Marie Marais, the "Marie" of the book's title. While I have no interest in ruining the tale for anyone who hasn't yet read it, Allan tells us right in the beginning of his narrative that this was to be a tragic and star-crossed love, so epic and poignant and formative to the young Allan that it would shape the remainder of his life to come. The rest of the book certainly lives up to that promise.Despite ostensibly being a tragic love story, this is also an Allan Quatermain story and written by H. Rider Haggard, so it should come as no surprise to anyone that it has more than its share of action and drama (and melodrama, though not so much as other writers of the time indulged in, or, indeed, as much as Haggard indulged in himself in other books, such as HEART OF THE WORLD: MACDONALD ILLUSTRATED EDITION (Macdonald Illustrated Edition)). There is a desperate and nearly tragic stand against enraged native warriors. There are shooting contests against mad despots with dozens of lives on the line. There is a mad dash across South Africa in hopes of saving the woman he loves from death by starvation and illness due to the pride and mad arrogance of her father and the cruel and haughty man that he chose for her. So yes, while it is a love story, it is one where Allan Quatermain is constantly testing himself against man, nature and fate in order to make himself worthy of the woman he loves and win a place for them in the world. I doubt even the most jaded of adventure hounds could fault this "mere" love story, or be bored by it. This tale comes to a conclusion that is so poignant and tragic that is almost Shakespearean.Haggard's trademark humor also makes the trek into Allan's past more or less intact. Since this is a tragic love story you can't expect it to be the laugh-riot that the much more light-hearted "King Solomon's Mines" was, but it does have more than its share of humor, mostly in the form of Allan's delightfully amoral Hottentot companion Hans. Hans is nearly brimming with advice that is logically sound and morally questionable, not to mention wanting nothing so badly as to find and consume mass quantities of alcohol as often as possible. But there is a sort of Zen-like wisdom in the simplicity of Hans' worldview, such as the time that Hans' suggests that Allan and Marie's lives might be simplified immeasurably if Hans' gun should "accidentally" go off and kill Hernando Periera, Allan's rival for Marie's affections. Allan dismisses Hans too often as a savage, but one is left wondering if Hans' simplified native worldview isn't preferable to Allan's ultimately damning adherence to his British pride and honor.Does the tale have its flaws? Of course, and much more so than were apparent in "King Solomon's Mines" or others of the earlier-written-but-chronologically-later Quatermain stories. For one thing, everyone except for Marie's father, Henri Marais, and Allan's rival for Marie's affection, Hernando Periera sing his praises so often and so valuably that you occasionally want to yell "we get it! He's a hero!" at your book, and Periera is portrayed as a creature so cowardly and dastardly that he does everything except twirl his mustache and tie Marie to the train tracks. In "King Solomon's Mines" and other books, before Quatermain had become Haggard's consummate hero and gravy train he was portrayed much more realistically and less saintly; he is occasionally cowardly, quite vocal about being cowardly, not to mention tired, cautious and somewhat ugly, with a scraggly beard and hair that sticks up every which way. His two redeeming features are his old man's wisdom and his extraordinary shooting ability. The young Allan of "Marie", however, is clever, brave, honorable to the point of fault, heroic and almost messianic. Either the old Allan writing the tale of the young Allan's exploits or H. Rider Haggard himself in writing the book have started to believe a bit too much of the hype surrounding our intrepid hero, and have lost some of the perspective that showed us Allan's flaws, making him more quirky, realistic and likable. The only other complaint I can think of is that people expecting another "King Solomon's Mines" might be disappointed that this is a different kind of tale; there are no lost treasures, princes in disguise or deadly Indiana Jones-style traps. But that only makes sense, as Allan couldn't be expected to have experienced similar remarkable adventures in his youth. If he had it would have cheapened the events that happened to him later in his life. But the adventures that he DOES have in this book are interesting and deadly enough in their own right to keep just about anyone happy.Since this book was written in 1912, long before the struggle for Civil Rights or Political Correctness came into their own, I won't beat a black horse to death. But I must at least mention that Haggard's portrayal of the native people of Africa was, for the most part, honorable, respectful and refreshing. While he does occasionally refer to them as "savages" or the like, and he does use the term "Kaffir" often, which is now considered a racist pejorative, by and large Haggard treats the Africans with as much dignity and respect as he does any other people. Which is to say some are honorable, some are dastardly, and some are just people, but Haggard refuses to categorize them as a people or use them as a foil against valiant white heroes. Some are good and some are bad and some are heroic and some are horrid, just as it is amongst the British, the Dutch, or anyone else. He writes and describes the natives as individuals and humans above all else, which is no mean feat considering the time he was writing in. Despite the prevalent racial nastiness of the time, Haggard manages to treat the black African characters with as much honor and respect as he does anyone else, even while his characters are repelling attacks from angry mobs of native "Quabies" and "Zulus".All in all "Marie" is an excellent addition to the Allan Quatermain series, a beautiful story of love of survival, and a pulse-punding story of action and adventure, even in a sea of tragedy and melodrama. Above all this book is entertaining, poignant and riveting, well worth the time of any fans of romance, adventure or even pure action. Haggard is one of the largely forgotten gems of English adventure literature.

John is now a professional freelance journalist and author. His deep understanding of the issues facing freelancers and the self-employed has arisen from his own personal experience in this field. His aim is to help those who have found themselves looking for employment in a workforce which has changed almost beyond recognition in the last 20 years. He is aware that it is particularly difficult for those affected by economic downturn (e.g. farmers caught in a cycle of droughts or floods, people living in areas where the local industries such as manufacturing, mining or ship building have collapsed, those living in situations of political unrest, the aftermath of war or in isolated communities). The goal with this eBook is to help those people, who are now empowered, through the power of the internet, to change their circumstances. Cosstick is keen to give hope to those who are finding it hard to re-build their working lives, and to show that there are many opportunities if you know where to find them. By Jennifer So many books in this genre in my repertoire...so what is another one to me, right? I was offered this as a freebie and couldn't pass that up, so here I go. It is definitely not one of those generic how-to guides that reads like Private Label resell...even the occasional stock photos look better than what you may find in some books. John did a stellar job on this resource guide and you know he's not just phoning it in when he talks about finding opportunities, websites for those opportunities, effective bidding approaches and strategies for managing the work/life balance that many will understand and relate to. He also discusses one valuable topic that I have not come across yet on the topic of solo-preneurship and that is the benefits of becoming part of a freelancer's union for moral support, networking opportunities, legal protection and information on insurance.. Like the cover photo insinuates, it can be lonely, the life of an entrepreneur, kind of like the proverbial lighthouse keeper.I personally liked his "set the timer" strategy...I try to practice that one with due diligence. It would amaze you to see the time that gets eat up with Internet frivolity. I will definitely have to check out that "Wakoopa" feature as I had no idea that there was a program that could track your web activities play by play. The list of resources compiled to help you out was well thought out and it is great to know that you don't have to go it alone. And yes, a little info is provided on scams and things to be wary of....one of them I have never even thought of.I don't think you can overlearn when it comes to this thing called internet marketing. This book definitely hit it out of the park...I also felt like it was well-formatted, too.....better than some other ebooks I have read. So I know that John walks his talk and has a great staff as well.

It seems like everyone's an expert on this, and I've read more than one. This one, I believe, however is the best I've read to date. It's full of great content that is well distilled. In fact, there's a potential danger here. Because the author's writing can be so concentrated and succinct, the reader may pass over an important point. In my opinion, Cosstick doesn't write a lot of "white noise" around his ideas. Don't be tempted to gloss over an idea because it seems short in description. They're all important. This book can be used as a great step step guide, both for getting setting yourself up as well as for finding paying work. There's a nice analysis of online sites that serve as clearing houses or hubs for work. The book covers online presence and touches on branding (although not by that term). It also goes over monetizing a website, including reviews, affiliate income, and writing (from freelance articles to eBooks), as well as other types of freelance work. The author also gives detailed information on marketing yourself and setting rates for your work. There are LOTS of links to support materials and information throughout the book.In this case, this makes the difference between a good book for beginners and a GREAT one. In addition, there's an entire chapter dedicated to online tools and resources for at home workers.I received this book at a discount in exchange for an honest review. Any opinion expressed is mine alone.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. From a Fellow Escapee: Read this book! By Troy Lambert Five years ago, I determined I wanted to write full time at home. Almost three years ago now, I created a five year plan as part of my strategic planning for my business, which included a variety of streams of income. This resulted in some eighty hour work weeks, and a great deal of overwork/underlife. I was almost proud of the hours I put in. As a workaholic there was danger ahead, and the unthinkable happened. I now have gone through a divorce. As a result, I am resetting my business and business plan so that I can be a “lifestyle entrepreneur,” as Christy Hovey calls it in this great, realistic guide to starting a business. I am currently writing this in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but will be in Boise, Idaho tomorrow. I can work when I want, from where I want, and my new girlfriend calls me a “recovering workaholic.” I like the term. But if I had read this book five years ago (okay, a bit before it was written, but a guy can dream. I’m an entrepreneur, it’s actually what we do). I would have approached my business and my overall planning differently. As it is, in this time of a “lifestyle reset” for me, this book could not be timed better. Whether you are starting out, or a “veteran” escape artist, you will find useful information here.Well edited, presented in a conversational voice, this book is both refreshing and accurate, told from a perspective few have: those of us who have escaped the 9 to 5. I would highly recommend this book to anyone starting a business, living the escape artist dream, or who is fed up with working for someone else, and wants to know how to make a living without those strings attached.Five stars, well worth every minute of your time to read, and re-read the sections that resonate most with you.

There is so much information here, you will keep it next to your tablet or laptop, if you don't already have the digital copy. I currently use the information and plan to revisit it often. Christy's writing style is no nonsense, tell it like it is. I find that refreshing and thought provoking. Reading this book made me think hard about my methods and have hope that as a start-up it CAN be done, with the 9-to-5 escape artist handy. This book is an ARC trade for fair review.

Well-written and easy to follow, packed with useful information. If you like Tim Ferriss and are looking for more information on how to break out of the cubicle, this book is for you. I highly recommend.

The Wouldbegoods, by Edith Nesbit

About the Author Edith Nesbit (1858&ndash1924) was a children's writer whose most famous novels include The Story of the Treasure Seekers, Five Children and It, and The Enchanted Castle.

From AudioFile In this sequel to THE TREASURE SEEKERS, the Bastable siblings spend a summer making mischief in the English countryside. The wonderfully imaginative children form a society for the doing of good deeds--with unfailingly disastrous and amusing results. Their adventures (seamlessly abridged) are presented as vignettes with snatches of music in between. Teresa Gallagher sounds unerringly like children should sound. She's completely convincing as both the boys and the girls (and the grown-ups)--and she's particularly successful in the narrating voice of Oswald, who is the anonymous teller of these adventures. Edith Nesbit's strikingly modern British classic is just as welcome--and feels just as relevant--today. J.M.D. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

He's the greatest, so utterly pompous yet compassionate and humane, so three-dimensional, so all-knowing, yet so childishly naive. The Wouldbegoods is hilarious and quite informative. I learned a great deal about British vocabulary--"ripping" is now my most-loved word.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Maybe They Should Try Being Bad.....? By A Customer "I do believe we are the worst children who ever lived!" Alice Bastable cries when yet another plan of the 'Wouldbegoods' goes disastrously wrong. Her despair is understandable, in their attempts to perform good deeds the six Bastable children and their two friends wreck havoc across the British countryside. Yet in the end they do manage to do good, quite by accident. Absolutely hilarious.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Banished for the Summer! By A Customer 6 Bastables and two friends are sent to the country for the summer, and try to do good things. Of course, the best laid plans...But what child can resist a story of children living in a moat house, spending their summer free to explore the English countryside? What great ideas will the children come up with next? The characters are funny and very real. There is trouble around every bend, but a theme of honesty and integrity runs through the story like a breath of fresh country air.

About the Author

Laurie Yost has always looked at life from the humorous side. Appropriately, when she was in college she was voted class clown. Laurie graduated from Spring Arbor University and taught secondary education for three years before becoming a stay-at-home mom. As a pastor’s wife and a missionary, she felt called to minister to women, and this passion pushed her to start two mom’s groups, mentor women and pastor’s wives, and work with MOPS International. She recently transitioned from the mission field in Mexico to minister in Northern Lower Michigan.

She has been married to her prince charming for twenty-five years and has three beautiful children and a daughter-in-law. Laurie’s writing and speaking are about the silly and oftentimes unbelievable, real-life situations from living in the United States and Latin America. She seeks as her life goal to live a life of love, humor, and intention with a heart to serve.

Stumbling Along by Laurie Yost is an excellent book! I purchased this book at full price for my personal reading. I have thoroughly enjoyed the author's funny stories and also her deeper meaning portions at the end of each chapter. Laurie tells about some hilarious foibles she's endured throughout her life as a pastor's wife, mom, and missionary. Her stories sure are funny indeed, but they also remind us that we're human and we mess up and there's enough of God's grace for all of us. It further helps that she incorporates Biblical meaning and questions for more learning and thought. This would also make a great book for a small group or a Bible study.

I'm reminded, as one who tends to be too serious, that it's ok to laugh at myself. Laurie uses her God given gifts and her many funny mishaps as an encouragement to others to laugh at ourselves in our embarrassing moments, as we draw closer to God for guidance in our imperfections. The "digging deeper" sections are thought provoking and prompted me to consider the questions and scriptures as they relate to my own Christian journey.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Read! By Pam Schantz Things sometimes just happen but never as often as to this author. Laurie is such a funny lady and tells her stories in an endearing way. She uses each encounter to draw the reader closer to God as she reveals her own journey. You really can't believe the situations she gets herself into until you read it for yourself. The Bible says laughter is medicine...I especially liked the Digging Deeper sections and cried during Chapter 8.
