A hygiene that claims to be new and of the greatest practicality, and certainly revolutionary in its application, would seem to require something of its origin and development to excite the interest of the intelligent reader. Methods in health culture are about as numerous as the individuals who find some method necessary for the health: taking something, doing something for the health is the burden of lives almost innumerable. Very few people are so well that some improvement is not desirable.

The detective, Godfrey, is similar to Sherlock Holmes but is more realistic, being a newspaper reporter who was formerly a police detective. The Watson figure is Lester, a lawyer, who follows along and reports what Godfrey discovers. The novel is based on a mystery. Vantine, a wealthy friend of Lester's, purchases a Boule table made during the reign of one of the French Louis and owned by Madame Montespan, a famous poisoner. The mystery begins when two people, including Vantine, are poisoned by the table. Godfrey assumes there must be some secret drawers in the piece, and spends, with Lester, much time searching the piece. The first section of the novel is first-rate, as Godfrey and Lester figure out the secrets of the table, but after that the work introduces a second major section based on a French grand criminal who tests Godfrey's abilities as a detective. The French man assumes several disguises as he attempts the get the table which now contains some hidden jewels.Although not a great mystery novel, it is a good read and shows how at least one early 20th-century mystery writer drew on the British and French mystery traditions in his work. It's good to have these early works available!

Even though about 3/4 of the way through the book I had it figured out, it was a joy to read something that had no foul language, no sex, no vampires, no rape or goulish items, etc. Just a story with a mystery. I decided to try all these types of books (if I can find them). They are so refreshing to read something that I can't seem to put down.

I suspect if you enjoy her books you will like this one too. The characters are not deep, the story not too realistic, but the plot is clever. Sometimes one of these old books is just right with no gore and no lurid 'love' scenes.

How, then, has the decline in economic freedom—in recent years a remorseless degradation of individual liberty—played out day to day in corporations and small businesses, in Washington, DC, and city hall, on Wall Street and in the courts? What are the grim mechanics in America today of encroaching government control and the inevitable consequence of a shrinking of the domain of innovating, choosing, acting economic man? What specifically are we losing that we care about—or should care about? Those are the questions answered in these 18 essays, which range from a demonstration that government is “nationalizing the financial industry” to a close-up look at how one Long Island town exercises plenipotentiary power over property rights in the name of zoning.

Not Half Free: The Myth that America Is Capitalist, by Walter Donway

About the Author From the Preface by David Kelley, founder of the Atlas Society: ''Walter Donway is a lifelong student of philosophy and his philosophical depth is on display throughout "Not Half Free." But I would recommend particularly “Bernie, Bernie, Was It ‘Selfish’?” for addressing the core, controversial issue of self-interest in a market economy. If you read nothing else, please read this one. Discussing the case of Bernard Madoff, whose Ponzi scheme caused investors millions of dollars in losses, Walter zeroes in with his philosophical lens on the central question and answers it with a narrative that is more effective than any abstract argument. "In the same vein, “Just Another Successful Business Man—Destroyed: The Ordeal of Greg Reyes,” tells the story of a government and media assault on one of the Hank Reardens in our world; and “Sharia Zoning,” makes the principle of property rights shine forth in a local municipal dispute. "Political acumen, a writer’s skill, philosophical depth: You have a treat in store for you."

Toward a Better Understanding of the attacks on Economic Freedom in the U.S. By Mike Mertens This collection of 18 essays by Walter Donway explores the decline of economic freedom in the United States while providing ideas and analysis to help reverse that decline. You are in for an intellectual treat as you read these essays – Donway writes well, boils the issues down to their essence (without oversimplifying) while making his theoretical points real through historical context, recent examples, metaphors, and philosophic and economic analysis. Why does this matter? As Donway writes toward the end of the book:“In an era when economic growth is driven as never before by innovation, when knowledge and invention are the great “natural resource,” the freedom to create, invest, produce, and trade no longer is merely an “advantage”— it is the life or death of the wealth of nations.”Donway begins by looking at what economic freedom is and documents how much of that freedom has been lost - especially over the last decade. He makes a sharp distinction between “crony capitalism” and true capitalism:“Do not say that capitalism is impossible without cronyism until you separate government and the economy in the same absolute way that the U.S. Constitution separates government and religion.”There are many valuable insights found throughout these essays. Here are just a few to give you a flavor of what you have in store in reading this book:• Thinking in Essentials – this is brilliantly covered in his essay “How to explain the crash to your barber” – his point that greed has always existed and his narrative using current, fuses and a penny truly gets to the heart of the matter.• Check Your Premises – Was Bernie Madoff Selfish? Read his essay “Bernie, Bernie: Was it Selfish?” for conceptual clarity and a provocative answer• Primary Values versus Consequences – his essay “Suing Apple to keep products from customers” covers the non-objective basis of anti-trust law. He discusses why competition is a consequence and properly notes “the primary value is the freedom to act, to make contracts, to enter any voluntary arrangement. It is this freedom of the acting individual, this unrestrained application of reason to the problem of production, which creates the unique bounty and progress of laissez-faire capitalism.”• How even semi-free, over-regulated markets can upset monopolies (specifically energy and OPEC in this case)Additionally, you will learn 10 things everyone should know about the dollar, the Yuan versus the Dollar (especially relevant given recent – June 2015 - IMF considerations related the Chinese Yuan), and a creative way to fix the debt crisis.I really enjoyed reading this book and I recommend it highly – understanding what led to the accelerating Economic Decline in the United States over the last decade and ideas for reversing that decline are important for all of us - both morally and practically.

Nice collection of economic/philosophical essays By Todd Goldberg Disclaimer: I know the author, but nevertheless I can honestly say this is truly a nice little book, a collection of economic and philosophical essays, most previously posted on various web sites, from a libertarian/Objectivist viewpoint. Mostly related to the 2008 financial crisis and related subjects. All together, makes a convincing case that the problems blamed on capitalism and free enterprise are actually caused by government interference in the free market system. A highlight is the piece about why the notorious Bernie Madoff should NOT be considered "SELFISH." A quick/easy read despite its potentially deep subject matter. Nice introduction by Atlas Society founder David Kelley Ph.D. as well. Highly recommended.

Jeffery Small Not Half Free: The Myth that America is CapitalistWalter Donway has assembles a wonderful collection of his essays, written between 2009 and 2015, which focus primarily on economics but also includes commentary on American politics and its impact upon our culture, all framed in terms of fundamental principles and their application to our lives. In his Introduction, Donway explains the books title by pointing out that when you add up the confiscation of personal productivity through taxation (28% of the country's Gross Domestic Product in 2008), the saddling of current and future citizens with a massive debt load through deficit spending (currently over $18 trillion) coupled with the unfunded liabilities of welfare programs (estimated to be in the hundreds of trillions!), along with the lost productivity wasted on compliance with arbitrarily imposed personal and business regulations, it is not hard to see that we retain much less that half the economic freedom that a true capitalist market would provide. In article after article, Donway addresses specific issues that demonstrate the accelerating erosion of our freedoms. For example, he discusses: * The creation of "crony" public-private channels whereby favorable legislation is influenced through back-room deals or purchased outright through campaign contributions. * The debasement of our currency. * How government agencies destroy property rights through the imposition of zoning and building codes. * How industry after industry has been nationalized in the 21st century. * The toll that government intervention into economic matters has had on the personal lives of specific individuals.Beyond those highlights there is much more covered in these essays and I highly recommend them to anyone with a desire to better grasp exactly what is happening to this country. The insights provided here will arm you with a better perspective for understanding the actions and intent of today's politicians as well as the corrupted submission to them of so many business leaders. Whether paperback or Kindle edition, this book is a bargain.

William Tell Told Again, by P. G. Wodehouse

About the Author Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (P. G. Wodehouse) was an English humorist and writer best known for his Jeeves and Blandings Castle novels. Educated at boarding schools, Wodehouse turned to writing at a young age, demonstrating great skill at humorous sketches and musical lyrics. He continued to write part-time while pursuing, at the behest of his father, a career in banking, and successfully contributed numerous pieces to Punch, Vanity Fair, and The Daily Express, among other publications. In addition to his literary work, Wodehouse was incorporated into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in recognition of his collaboration with Cole Porter on Anything Goes, his lyrics to the song Bill from Show Boat, and his work on the musicals Rosalie and The Three Musketeers.

While interned along with other British citizens in Germany during the Second World War, Wodehouse made a series of radio broadcasts for which he was accused of being a collaborator; and, although later cleared of the charges, he never returned to England. His work has influenced many other writers including Evelyn Waugh, Rudyard Kipling, J. K. Rowling, and John Le Carr?. P. G. Wodehouse died in 1975 at the age of 93.

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. An early masterpiece By Gopal One of Wodehouse's earliest efforts, this is a must-own for any Wodehouse fan. Still written in the days when the master was doing school tales, one can see precusors of that incredible ability that Wodehouse had, to take the English language to places few others could have imagined it could go to. A simple tale of good triumphing over evil - it is one of those rare Wodehouses (probably the only one) in which a character dies. In his later & much more celebrated efforts, one got the feeling that all his characters were ageless & immortal.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A Simple Tale Told Simply, By A Master By Chris Ward This early example of Wodehouse's whimsy is perfect for reading aloud to a child before bedtime, or for enjoying ones' self no matter the age. The tale of Tell is not well known by many these days-- learn a little history (well, legend) and enjoy Wodehouse's always- sparkling prose and verse in this extended fable. One hundred years later, he's still hard to beat for humor.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. missing illustrations By Traveler This is a short story and takes less than an hour to read. It goes without saying that if you are an avid Wodehouse fan, you'll love it. If not, you might find this rather offputting. The people are suppressed by a tyrannical governor, but naturally, William Tell is there to shoot an apple off his son's head and save the day. My friend tells me this is a children's story, but, to me, it was just as much for adults as children. Back in the earlier days of tv there was a show called Fractured Fairy Tales with - was it Edward Everett Horton? This is a fractured fairy tale and a lot of fun. What is not fun is that it is an ILLUSTRATED fairy tale, and Kindle does not accept illustrations. Throughout, there is an indication of Plate Number Such & Such, and you must either work your way to the end of the book to read a description of the plate (which is not easy on a Kindle) or wait until the story is finished and read all the descriptions at once. Wodehouse is one of my favorite authors, and frankly, I would have been very happy with just the story without the illustrations - if I had not known about the illustrations at all. However, since I was forewarned about the "deficiency" in the story, I felt I was disadvantaged. Why put something into Kindle at all if it doesn't work? If it does work, why try to patch up the story with the descriptions after it's all over? I need large-print books, which makes Kindle good for me. However, there are some challenges to reading on a Kindle, and the above is an example. Someday, technological advances will bring more features to Kindle: illustrations, flipping pages, an easier-to-use built-in dictionary. Until then, I wish the people at Kindle would use a little more common sense in what (and how) they make available to the Kindle user.

About the Author Author of the iconic novel The Thirty-Nine Steps, John Buchan filled many roles including barrister, colonial administrator, publisher, Director of Intelligence, and Member of Parliament. The Thirty-Nine Steps, first in the Richard Hannay series, is widely regarded as the starting point for espionage fiction and was written to pass time while Buchan recovered from an illness. During the outbreak of the First World War, Buchan wrote propaganda for the British war effort, combining his skills as author and politician. In 1935 Buchan was appointed the 15th Governor General of Canada and established the Governor General s Literacy Award. Buchan was enthusiastic about literacy and the evolution of Canadian culture. He died in 1940 and received a state funeral in Canada before his ashes were returned to the United Kingdom.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A Classic of Paranoia By Chris Ward Though not as good as his "The 39 Steps," this lesser effort is still an enjoyable read. Buchan efectively invented the thriller genre, and this short novel follows the rules, though in a somewhat diffident manner. Our hero is a staid lawyer/politician who stumbles upon a conspiracy that finds-- it seems, anyway-- most of the people of London on his tail, seeking his demise. Buchan is businesslike as always, and this is one of his better efforts.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Short Thriller By Jerry Richardson An excellent early thriller from the author of the Thirty-nine Steps. This book is good for bothadults and young adults. I wish someone had introduced this book to me in 7th or 8th grade along with Prester John, Greenmantle, and The Thirty-nine Steps. These books are the forerunners of Eric Ambler's A Coffin for Demetrios, which I also recommend. These books established the thriller genre which led to the techno-thrillers of Clancy and Ing.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Power House By Lee Kam Lai A very interesting book which captivates your attention from beginning to end. John Buchan writes "lyrically", candid, smooth style which provides readers with easy reading.

"In less refined circles than ours," I said to Myra, "your behaviour would be described as swank. Really, to judge from the airs you put on, you might be the child's mother." "He's jealous because he's not an aunt himself. Isn't he, ducksey darling?" "I do wish you wouldn't keep dragging the baby into the conversation; we can make it go quite well as a duologue. As to being jealous—why, it's absurd. True, I'm not an aunt, but in a very short time I shall be an uncle by marriage, which sounds to me much superior. That is," I added, "if you're still equal to it."

Once a Week, by A. A. Milne

About the Author A. A. Milne was an English novelist and playwright born in 1882. A student of H. G. Wells during public school, Milne went on to study mathematics in Cambridge. During his time there, Milne frequently contributed to the college s student magazine, Granta, and was so successful that he was offered a job at the British humour magazine Punch. Milne s son, Christopher Robin, was born in 1920. After writing a poem for him entitled Teddy Bear, Milne began publishing children s stories about Christopher Robin and his stuffed animals, including his bear, Winnie-the-Pooh. Milne s children s books, Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner, have since become beloved classics that have been adapted into the famous Disney franchise. Milne died in 1956 at the age of 74.

So if you enjoy dated, "veddy British" humor,it's a pleasant read. The style is similar to some of Agatha Christie's early mysteries; perhaps she enjoyed Milne's writing as well. If you enjoyed the original Pooh stories and haven't been poisoned by Disneyfication, you'll like the gentle satire.

Review "Each reading of Fulvio Testa's books will reveal something new." --"Junior Education"

About the Author Carlo Lorenzini was born in Italy on November 24, 1826, but as a writer, he used the pseudonym Carlo Collodi. The Adventures of Pinocchio was first published in 1880 as a magazine serial. During the unification of Italy, Collodi wrote political satires. After the unification in 1875, he translated fairy tales of Charles Perrault and published his first story, Giannettino, in 1876. He died on October 26, 1890.

They're a whole series of unabridged classic books with an easy-to-hold shape, quality printing and paper, extras at the end, and the coolest covers. The artful, witty, bright covers take these books above and beyond the usual treacle-filled, royalty-free realm of "children's books". You wouldn't be the least bit embarrassed to be spotted on the beach with any of these. To top off the package, these are also the cheapest editions of these classic books that you'll find anywhere. Yes, you can get many of these books for free as eBooks, but these little gems are so dandy that you'll find yourself collecting them all.I had never read Pinocchio, and had actually never realized that it was a book. I've been trying to read the classics that I never had a chance to read before, so this was a delightful discovery. It's a short book, and a quick read, which makes the dark mood and event-packed story all the more remarkable. Get Disney's sweet little boy out of your head, because there's no sign of him here. This Pinocchio is something of a little jerk, selfish and thoughtless. If you're buying this for children, be aware that some very dark things happen to this Pinnochio, including an incident involving his feet and a fireplace, that may be nightmare material for younger or more sensitive kids.Overall it's an enlightening read with an interesting anti-hero, and a surprising darkness for the time. I'll warn you that the stark differences between this and the Disney film may start you on a path of reading all of the original stories that Disney animated films have been based on. (Start with "Tarzan" or "The Hunchback of Notre Dame".)

Halliday i never read pinocchio when i was a child so,the other day i sat down and read it. this story is much darkerthan i thought. this is the story of a poor, lonely man named geppetto who carved a wooden puppet and namedhim pinocchio. as if by magic, pinocchio can walk, talk and feel hunger. geppetto is very devoted to pinocchioand wants him to attend school like a real boy but, instead of doing what geppetto asked him to do,pinocchioscampers off to end up in mischief. all through the story, pinocchio DOES NOT listen to advice from humans oranimals and he has some really strange... "adventures",some of which are a bit too violent for young children.for instance,a couple of thieves hang pinocchio in a tree-by his neck untill he passes out! and the blue fairycomes to the rescue. at the end of the story, pinocchio does redeem himself with the love he has for geppetto.i did find this story interesting but,i think the author really wanted adults and children to THINK before doingsomething and there are consequences for every action.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Much more interesting than the Disney movie By Dan'l Danehy-Oakes I've been meaning to read this for years.I had always been told that the Disney film was very different from the original book, and while that's true, it isn't as true as all that. The Disney follows the outline of the book fairly closely and, where it doesn't, it's generally for purposes of simplicity and tightening. Collodi's Pinocchio is episodic and loose, which fits its manner of composition -- Collodi wrote a few chapters whenever he felt like it, publishing them in a magazine where they were very popular.Perhaps the most important change is to the origin of Pinocchio himself. As you know, in the movie, toy-maker Gepetto makes a marionette, then wishes on a star that it could be a real son to him. Not so in the book: a mischievous hunk of talking wood torments one Master Cherry until he gives it to his friend Gepetto, who has in mind to make a marionette with which he will make his fortune. When he carves the marionette, it is alive (and still mischievous). The Blue Fairy is not involved. The Blue Fairy is a plot convenience in the Disney movie: granting a wish at the beginning, then not appearing again until the end, where she acts as a deus ex machina. She (who in the book is "Blue-Haired," not "Blue") plays a much larger part in the book than in the movie, interacting with Pinocchio more than any other single character. There is no Jiminy, but a Talking Cricket who is killed on his first appearance (but gets better). The Cat and the Fox do appear, and are similar in character (i.e., swindlers) to what they are in the movie, but their roles are larger. It's a very different experience from the Disney movie, but the Disney movie is very recognizably based on the book: far more so than, say, Jackson's Hobbit seems, thus far, to be. My translation is readable, though it appears to be less than literal: money is measured in dollars and cents, which I'm betting was not the case in the Italian; and occasionally the auctorial voice explains something about Italy to the reader, which I'll bet is not the case in the Italian.

I just found this book so charming. I appreciated the cute illustrations sprinkled throughout. And the contents were a hoot. I loved the idea about papering someone’s door (you will have to look that one up to understand what I’m talking about). All the little quizzes and games were quite enjoyable and fun to do too. And the book also contains a lot of random but interesting Christmas information and trivia. I especially enjoyed the price analysis of how much the Twelve Days of Christmas would cost you (I guess I won’t be buying that for anyone anytime soon). Oh, and there are Christmas jokes in the book that you can use at your next holiday party. Overall, this book was a great way to pass the time and get me into the Christmas spirit.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Festive fun By H This was a fun mix of jokes, puzzles and facts that got me into the christmas mood! I learned about some very strange festive traditions around the world, but my favorite part was the must-have toys from the past. The visual christmas movie puzzles are awesome! Also found out the publishers donate some of the profits to charity, very cool.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Priceless Christmas gift! By J.A. Schneider, author of the Embryo series and of the psychological thriller FEAR DREAMS This is...funny! A genuine delight featuring surprise Christmas historical facts, movie trivia, some very smart quizzes, and jokes...oh dear, the jokes. "Why did Santa's helper see the doctor?" The answer's inside. What was the must-have toy for 1920? 1930? 1940, 1950 and on? (Notice: *must have toy*, singular. Kids didn't used to get so much STUFF.) I think I liked the Christmas jokes the best. Or maybe being carried back to a time when a child would be thrilled just to get a yo-yo. Can you imagine? The strong tug of nostalgia is what makes this book special.
