A prolific 19th Century author of short stories, plays, novellas, novels, fiction and non-fiction; during his lifetime Dickens became known the world over for his remarkable characters, his mastery of prose in the telling of their lives, and his depictions of the social classes, morals and values of his times. Some considered him the spokesman for the poor, for he definitely brought much awareness to their plight, the downtrodden and the have-nots. He had his share of critics, like Virginia Woolf and Henry James, but also many admirers, even into the 21st Century.

Unique editorial features that help Everyman Paperback Classics stand out from the crowd include: a leading scholar or literary critic's introduction to the text, a biography of the author, a chronology of her or his life and times, a historical selection of criticism, and a concise plot summary. All books published since 1993 have also been completely restyled: all type has been reset, to offer a clarity and ease of reading unique among editions of the classics; a vibrant, full-color cover design now complements these great texts with beautiful contemporary works of art. But the best feature must be Everyman's uniquely low price. Each Everyman title offers these extensive materials at a price that competes with the most inexpensive editions on the market-but Everyman Paperbacks have durable binding, quality paper, and the highest editorial and scholarly standards.

From the Back Cover The main issue in the novel is the disappearance of Edwin Drood and the suspicion that he has been murdered. But as intriguing as this central plot are the startling innovations in Dicken's work and the troubled elements lurking within the novel: a dark opium underworld, the uneasy and violent fantasies of its inhabitants, the disquieting presence of old 'Princess Puffer', of the quiet cathedral town of Cloisterham from which people have to escape in order to save themselves--and, at the centre, the menacing figure of Jasper.

About the Author Arguably one of the greatest writers of the Victorian era, Charles Dickens is the author of such literary masterpieces as A Tale of Two Cities (1859), A Christmas Carol (1843), David Copperfield (1850), and The Adventures of Oliver Twist (1839), among many others. Dickens' s indelible characters and timeless stories continue to resonate with readers around the world more than 130 years after his death. Dickens was born in 1812 and died in 1870.

(Of a projected twelve episodes, Dickens wrote six before his death.) The title character is either murdered or missing, and a large cast of characters in London and Cloisterham (Dickens's Rochester) are involved in their own way in discovering what happened to Edwin Drood. There is first of all John Jasper, an opium addict who suspiciously loves Drood's ex-fiancee; there is a nameless old woman who dealt him the opium who is trying to nail Jasper; there is a suspicious pile of quicklime Jasper notices during a late night stroll through the cathedral precincts; there is Durdles who knows all the secrets of the Cathedral of Cloisterham's underground burial chambers; there is the "deputy," a boy in the pay of several characters who has seen all the comings and goings; there are the Anglo-Indian Landless twins, one of whom developed a suspicious loathing for Drood; there is the lovely Rosebud, unwilling target of every man's affections; and we haven't even begun talking about Canon Crisparkle, Datchery, Tartar, and a host of other characters. All we know is that the game is afoot, but we'll never know the outcome. It would have been nice to know how Dickens tied together all these threads, but we can still enjoy THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD because -- wherever Dickens was heading with it -- it is very evidently the equal of his best works. Life is fleeting, and not all masterpieces are finished.

Drood Is So Good By IRA Ross It is a tribute to Charles Dickens' reputation that to this day this unfinished novel, a mystery no less, still garners such speculation as to who allegedly murdered Edwin Drood. There are organizations created for the sole purpose of analyzing the novel and to theorizing whom the culprit may have been, if indeed there really was a culprit. After all, only Drood's watch and his shirt pin are produced, not his body.As in all of Dickens' novels, the characterizations are the thing. You have the innocent young woman with the somewhat eccentric guardian and his Bob Cratchitlike assistant. There is the dark, possibly unfairly accused, but hot headed antagonist of Drood. Then there is Drood's brooding choirmaster uncle, John Jasper, who frequents opium dens, and who may or may not have ulterior motives in his seeking revenge. Durdles, the stone mason, and a somewhat weird character, provides some chilling comic relief in cemetery scenes with his stone throwing assistant. There are also the typical Dickensian characters, which includes a snooty older woman, a class conscious, spinsterish school mistress, and in a hilarious restaurant scene, an unappreciated, hard working "flying waiter" and a lazy, wise acre "stationary waiter."It is a shame that Dickens died before he could complete "Edwin Drood." What is here are the beginnings of an exploration of man's dual nature, a journey into "the heart of darkness" so to speak.

By Mary Whipple Set in Cloisterham, a cathedral town, Dickens's final novel, unfinished, introduces two elements unusual for Dickens--opium-eating and the church. In the opening scene, John Jasper, music teacher and soloist in the cathedral choir, awakens from an opium trance in a flat with two other semi-conscious men and their supplier, an old woman named Puffer, and then hurries off to daily vespers.Jasper, aged twenty-six, is the uncle and guardian of Edwin Drood, only a few years younger. Drood has been the fiancé of Rosa Bud for most of his life, an arrangement made by his and Rosa's deceased fathers to honor their friendship, and the wedding is expected within the year. Jasper, Rosa's music teacher, is secretly in love with her, though she finds him repellent. When two orphans, Helena and Neville Landless, arrive in Cloisterham, Helena and Rosa become friends, and Neville finds himself strongly attracted to the lovely Rosa. Ultimately, the hot-tempered Neville and Drood have a terrible argument in which Neville threatens Drood before leaving town on a walking trip. Drood vanishes the same day. Apprehended on his trip, Neville is questioned about Drood's disappearance, and Jasper accuses him of murder.Tightly organized to this point, the novel shows Jasper himself to be a prime suspect, someone who could have engineered the evidence against Neville, but Dickens unexpectedly introduces some new characters at this point--the mysterious Dick Datchery and Tartar, an old friend of Rev. Mr. Crisparkle, minor canon at the cathedral. Puffer, the opium woman, is reintroduced and appears set to play a greater role, since she solicits information from the semi-conscious Jasper and secretly follows him. This is the halfway point in the projected novel, and Dickens clearly planned to develop these new (or reintroduced) characters to deepen the mystery.More modern in many ways than his previous novels, the characters here are not simple stereotypes--some are good people who have real flaws and make mistakes. Dickens's tying of Jasper to the church choir, where he was a soloist, suggests some examination of the theme of hypocrisy, in which the good Mr. Crisparkle would be Jasper's antithesis. The opium scenes, vividly drawn, carry the unusual suggestion that opium leads to a kind of intoxication similar to that of alcohol, and Dicken does not use these scenes to offer dire warnings about the drug--at least at this point. Especially intriguing because it is unfinished, this novel continues to fascinate mystery lovers and literary scholars more than a century after its first publication. If you desire a little heat, a summer flirtation, or an escape to bask in your own private sun, this whimsical collection of original short stories is inspired by all things summer. In collaboration with some of Meryton Press’s most popular and award-winning authors, this anthology debuts other promising and emerging talent. • In KaraLynne Mackrory’s Shades of Pemberley, Mr. Darcy, with some fantastic assistance, discovers Elizabeth Bennet in a most unlikely place. • Karen M. Cox’s Northanger Revisited 2015 modernizes Northanger Abbey at a fictionalized seaside in Georgia. • Linda Beutler takes us to Paris as a young gentleman is schooled in the ways of amour in The Incomplete Education of Fitzwilliam Darcy. • In Spyglasses and Sunburns, J. Marie Croft takes the Miss Bennets to the seaside where they chance upon handsome acquaintances. • In Abigail Bok’s A Summer in Sanditon, a little sea bathing seems just the thing to cure what ails Anne de Bourgh. • In Natalie Richards’ Midsummer Madness, an honest confession and a promise between strangers at a masque ball mend a misunderstanding. • Sophia Rose re-imagines a modern-day Persuasion in Second Chance at Sunset Beach. • In Morgan K Wyatt’s Dream Spinner, a near-death car accident and an unlikely trucker bring new perspective to a young co-ed’s life and love. Contemporary and Regency alike, each romance was dreamt as a perfect summer refreshment to bring a smile to your own sun-kissed face.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Not a bad apple in the bunch! By Chele Jacobson When I purchased this book, I wasn't sure what to expect, but a friend recommended it so why not. I'm so glad I downloaded it. There are 8 short stories all with a summer theme--either contemporary or Regency times. And all but one has a Jane Austen connection. Each story is a stand-alone. There is no hard-core sex in the stories, but there is one story that sex is alluded to. Several of the stories like J. Marie Croft's "Spyglasses and Sunburns" and Karen M. Cox's "Northanger Revisited 2015" are clever and the romance "tugs at the heartstrings". The stories are mostly light-hearted, easy reads--I can easily recommend "Sun-kissed" if you're looking for a fun, summer romance read.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. 4.5 stars! Sweet Scenes that Savor the Delights of the Summer Season! By Meredith (Austenesque Reviews) Summer is my favorite season, mostly because I get to read outside in a variety of settings – by the pool, in my hammock, at the beach. In addition, I love what summer represents – a time to go on holiday, to visit new places, to go somewhere scenic. I’m thrilled that Meryton Press, one of my favorite publishers, has published their first short-story anthology and that the theme of the anthology is summer romance. Since there are eight short-stories by eight different authors, I thought I’d briefly touch upon each story individually. I hope you find this breakdown helpful!SPYGLASSES AND SUNBURNS – J. Marie CroftType of Story: Pride and Prejudice Variation (Regency)My Thoughts: Perfectly captured the essence of a beach holiday! Loved seeing the Gardiners and Bennets run into the Darcys and Bingleys. What a pleasant and diverting twist of events. And as always, I adore J. Marie Croft’s splendid sense of humor. Everyone seemed to get the most irregular of sunburns on this holiday!SECOND CHANCE ON SUNSET BEACH – Sophia RoseType of Story: Persuasion Inspired (Contemporary)My Thoughts: A truly beautiful and compelling romance! Takes place on Sunset Beach (my favorite kind of setting) and during a wedding weekend. It was a very moving story, Callie (Anne) is extraordinary and admirable, and her reunion with Camden (Wentworth) is everything that is tender and satisfying. One of my faves!THE INCOMPLETE EDUCATION OF FITZWILLIAM DARCY – Linda BeutlerType of Story: Pride and Prejudice Prequel (Regency) (Mature Audience)My Thoughts: Prearranged lessons for Darcy to learn the art of pleasing a woman! It was interesting to see how Darcy behaved in such a setting. I thought it was very true to character. And while the second part of the story felt a little too brief, I enjoyed seeing the connecting links to Jane Austen’s plot and timeline.MIDSUMMER MADNESS – Natalie RichardsType of Story: Pride and Prejudice Variation (Regency)My Thoughts: Sometimes it is easier to confess the truth to a stranger! I enjoyed this sweet interlude between Darcy and Elizabeth. Their costumes, clever appellations, confessions of love, and the enchanted atmosphere of it all made me think this story was as much an ode to Shakespeare as it was to Jane Austen.SHADES OF PEMBERLEY – KaraLynne MackroryType of Story: Pride and Prejudice Variation (Regency)My Thoughts: Imagine finding yourself locked in a room at Pemberley! I loved witnessing both Darcy and Elizabeth’s thoughts about each other. Poor Darcy thought he was seeing a ghost or going mad! Without giving away too much, I will say I loved how Ms. Mackrory hearkened back to one her previous novels (*wink wink* I see what you did there!)A SUMMER IN SANDITON – Abigail BokType of Story: Cross-Over Sequel – Pride and Prejudice/Sanditon (Regency)My Thoughts: When proposals of marriage do not befall a young lady in London or her home county she must seek them abroad! I loved seeing these characters interact with each other – especially Lady Denham and Lady Catherine! Classic! Was slightly confused as to why some Sanditon characters were altered, but overall felt like I was treated to the restorative properties of a seaside resort holiday myself! I long to go to Sanditon!DREAM SPINNER – Morgan K. WyattType of Story: Non-Austenesque (1980s)My Thoughts: Sometimes facing a new and different reality is better than living on dreams! A refreshing and inspiring story. The descriptions were vivid and the setting skillfully brought to life. Even though things progressed rather quickly I found myself interested in these characters and satisfied with this original tale.NORTHANGER REVISITED 2015 – Karen M. CoxType of Story: Northanger Abbey Inspired (Contemporary)My Thoughts: A lovely modern update! I thought the characterization just brilliant – Henry was of course adorable, Catherine endearing and open, and John Thorpe a colossal annoyance! I greatly appreciate all the nods to places and names from Northanger Abbey and thought the modernization of the events very clever and believable. One of my faves!CONCLUSION:These stories are like sun-ripened strawberries – warm, sweet, flavorful, and perfect to enjoy during the summertime! I greatly enjoyed seeing different types of stories, settings, and time periods blended together in this anthology. If anything, it would be great if there was even more variety (Pride and Prejudice inspired stories kind of tipped the balance heavily.) But overall, I found Sun-Kissed: Effusions of Summer to be a splendid way to quench your thirst for summer romance during those “lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer!”Austenesque Reviews

11 of 13 people found the following review helpful. A delightful and engaging read By Joana Starnes This lovely anthology is the perfect read for a summer’s day – or any day in fact. It has everything: exquisite romance, sparkling dialogue, much hoped-for happy endings and a few surprising twists along the way. It has hilarious moments that could make you giggle like crazy (be warned, in case you’re reading in a public place!) and moments so poignant that you would suffer alongside the characters over painful twists of fate that drew them apart. There are Regency stories written in exquisite period language and contemporary stories that skilfully bring Austen characters and themes into the modern world. You will be excessively diverted by some hilariously naughty goings-on at the seaside and enthralled by Mr. Darcy’s French education, which was not quite as incomplete as one might think ;). You will be moved to tears (I know I was) by the love story of a modern-day Anne Elliot and root for some insubstantial but very resourceful characters who are determined to assist – or rather push – Elizabeth and Mr Darcy in finding their way to each other. You will travel with Miss Anne de Bourgh and see her find her path to happiness, and also find herself in the process, and you will be invited to a summer ball where, under the protection of masks, deep-held truths are voiced at last. You will see John Thorpe perfectly translated into the most convincing modern-day lout and Catherine Morland finding a rather different Henry Tilney, who in essentials is very much like he ever was. And you will dream with the Dream Spinner and rejoice for her when she finds her own dreams. So pour yourself your favourite tall drink, put your feet up and be prepared to be delighted!

But the print was smaller than I like, I suppose that makes it cheaper to produce, but less enjoyable to read. If you would like a clean read, with no offensive words and wholesome characters, with one transforming from bitter to kind and loving, then you will love this book!

Deep in a hellish real estate fiasco nightmare and plagued with obstacle upon obstacle, Colin and Pam Rath persevered and managed to crawl to safety. It started with obtaining the right from the city to renovate a single-room occupancy rent-controlled "transient hotel" brownstone building and only got worse. From financial problems of a construction project gone haywire to the tune of $13.5 million, to contractor woes, accidents on the construction site, the disaster of a fraudulently installed foundation, falsified reports, a corrupt and antiquated Department of Buildings, political interference, and numerous lawsuits, their real estate project and personal residence was foreclosed, leaving them $13 million in debt. Nevertheless, they continued to hang on to their dreams of Manhattan real estate development and of a global sailing adventure with their children. In a surprising legal development in 2014, their foreclosure was dropped and their multi-million-dollar condo became theirs again, free and clear. The Rath's story of tragedy and triumph will inspire anyone with a dream and prove that the flames of failure don't have to destroy your vision; rather, they can toughen it, like tempered steel.

Review Colin and Pamela Rath...two bold dreamers who quixotically dove headfirst into the rough, often-unforgiving waters of Manhattan Real Estate and were almost drowned. Through a mix of colorful malefactors, historical circumstances, and misguided optimism, that dream goes terribly awry. Or perhaps, it actually yields to the better conclusion that waits beyond the horizon, drifting in a sea of endless possibility. Brian Babst Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker, CorcoranAn inspiring story for those who are determined to succeed. Life does have its twists and turns, however, it is through PERSEVERANCE one achieves their goals. Read It Is What It Is and find your own silver lining. Gregory Griffith President, G&G Global DevelopmentRead It Is What It Is to experience a real life Dickens adventure replete with looming foreclosure, bureaucratic ineptitude, and a hero pushing onward despite everything working against him. From the Inside Flap Pam and Colin Rath, a young Manhattan couple swept up in the housing bubble, borrow a small fortune to build a cutting-edge "green" luxury condo complex out of a crumbling rent controlled brownstone, only to find themselves facing a series of staggering setbacks while the housing bubble crashed. ***** In the early 2000s, real estate in Manhattan was booming, showing annual double-digit appreciation for the next decade. By the middle of the housing boom, Pam and Colin finished the full restoration of their brownstone, and their building had appreciated by over 700 percent! So what did they do next? They bought the adjacent broken-down building in order to develop the first green-cantilevered condominium complex in Manhattan. At the time, banks were throwing mortgages around like comedy club coupons in Times Square. It seemed un-American not to accept some of that money. Like many others, Pam and Colin got caught up in the housing boom. Green design was the new obsession of the architectural world and their project was all that and a tank of biofuel, incorporating two geothermal wells, passive solar radiant heating, reclaimed natural materials, modular construction, a car lift to a private garage, and Nana doors. It was the green dream on steroids! But then it all came crashing down. This is their story of survival and perseverance that brought a silver lining in the end.

About the Author Colin Rath is a successful entrepreneur, Manhattan real estate developer, and author. He grew up in Connecticut and started his first business--a house painting and refurbishing company--while still in college. After graduation, he took over the reins at Better Lists, Inc, a busy direct mail and fulfillment company, and his leadership propelled the firm into a multi-million dollar business. In 1998 he changed careers and obtained a Series 7 license. He bought a seat on the Chicago MidAm trading floor and traded with his own money. Eight years later he decided to branch out into Manhattan real estate development. He bought his first project for $700,000 and sold it nine years later for a whopping $7,000,000.Pamela Harvey-Rath is a marketing, fashion, and merchandising professional. Originally from Kentucky, she was one of the first "Jordache girls" in the 1980s. Thanks to her excellent marketing instincts and keen eye and ear for public taste and trend, she has been called upon to do product development for top fashion companies.Together the Rath's possess a combined experience and knowledge of development projects, the banking and construction industries, marketing, public relations, Manhattan experience and insights, along with a willingness to take risks and an unusual level of commitment and self-motivation. These factors led them to the successful completion of their green dream project and to its subsequent silver lining.

A spoiled kid born with silver spoon ranting everything and blame everyone else but himself on the failures By jay """Spoiler alert"""The author really hasn't learnt the lessons yet according to his book. He thought His only mistake was working with the wrong people/ trusting the wrong service provider while in reality, the bigger problem or the root of everything is they want way more than they can possibly produce. Their greed or needs are way over what they were capable of producing back in time which results in too high of a leverage, lots of complacency from an one-off success- their first condo project and once the world turns, he blames everything outside. From the description of his family and siblings, it is not hard to see that he is the spoiled kid of the family to whom the parents would give everything he wants , many times without even informing the other children in the family. The contradiction of his family value being love and helping each other, taught by his mother, versus his quick accusation of the siblings skipped that memo (of love and helping each other) , and the fact that he only talks to siblings 3 or 4 times a year tells you that he was the one always receiving love and extra care from the parents and he was living in a protected world shielded by his parents. Look, he gambled money on CBOT then now real estate development, and his full time job was with family business, not a testimony from real world competition from real job market. All this tells you he has lots of desire but little ability to get things done.In the end, when he got a hard lesson from real world problems, what was the reaction ? Blaming others. Blaming the market. Even blaming his siblings who correctly pointed out that he is not entitled to his lavish lifestyle or he is not entitled to waste family money for his own desire. And he thinks those criticisms are not fair, are you kidding me.Only value of this book is to remind everyone to make sure managing your risks in development projects, and don't leverage too much.

The story Colin Rath outlined in his memoir really was a real estate horror story: just about every single thing that can be imagined going wrong with a major development project did. My personal favorite "horror" moment was where it turned out that the steel connecting the the building to it's foundation just wasn't there!Going in, I didn't think that a real estate story could be harrowing, but I was wrong! I'd recommend It Is What It Is to memoir AND horror readers: there's nothing supernatural in the story, but apparently real life real estate development can be pretty terrifying!

Entertaining Narrative and Useful Insight By carlosrlu There is a great mix of entertaining narrative and useful insight in Colin Rath’s “It Is What It Is.” The story is both compelling and sheds light on just New York City’s real estate scene, but real estate as a whole! This book is a definite must-read for those looking for a book on New York City real estate, or really, a good story in general.

Ebook PDF Travel Hacking: How I saved $13k in 3 years on travel (with my wife and baby!), by Richard Monero

Travel Hacking - How our family saved more than $13k in 3 years on travel - with myself, my wife and a baby! Travel Hacking is defined as using credit card deals and loyalty points from various airlines or hotels to book highly discount flights or stays. This book is an overview of how our family went on many holidays and on average paid about one third of the full “cash” list price. This was the usual holiday stuff of flying, hiring cars and staying in hotels. The experience was also typically better than full price, due to hotel upgrades due to loyalty point membership. Travel Hacking is not a secret as there are many active internet communities that can show you how use airlines and hotels points. There are many websites that will give you up to the minute offers and tips that change month to month. This book is not trying to compete with these websites, it is simply one consolidated guide to glue it all together. This book outlines a high level overview and practical experience into a simple “how to” process guide. Importantly we explain what to think about first, and then where to start. This is simply an overview guide on how to begin getting good results. Importantly the book also comes with a spreadsheet that shares our real travel saving results from 2012 to 2014 - redeeming approximately $1.2 million loyalty points for a total travel savings of more than $13k. The accompanying spreadsheet can be downloaded and used to track your own annual travel summary, total travel savings, credit cards and fees. If you do a few techniques in this book, you will save hundreds of dollars on travel (not an exaggeration). If you want one way to save $400 per adult right now, skip to section on Spending. There is no “weird” time shares or shady 5 hour long presentations to get these prices - just learning how to travel hack. Just make sure that you are prepared to do the extra work up front, so you can simply check in, go on holiday and come back again – but for a lot less money! Personally we find it very satisfying to be able to let our family have a great holiday without bankrupting our finances. We also enjoy “beating the system” to see how inexpensively we can do family holidays. Hopefully this is also inspiring that it can be done – even when you have kids!

Worth the 3 bux By Eric C A great primer on how to maximize your daily spending on regular expenses (mortgage, utility bills) to get cheap airfare and hotels. The savings are real, but seems like you'll need to put in a lot of work tracking your rewards and credit cards. For anybody who travels often, and what to maximize their travel benefits, this is a good read.

This e-book publication is unique which includes biography and ten illustrations and comes along with a new table of contents that has been included by the publisher. This edition has been corrected for spelling and grammatical errors. Persuasion is Jane Austen's last completed novel. Persuasion marks a break with Austen's previous works, both in the more biting, even irritable satire directed at some of the novel's characters and in the regretful, resigned outlook of its otherwise admirable heroine, Anne Elliot, in the first part of the story.

Amazon.com Review Anne Elliot, heroine of Austen's last novel, did something we can all relate to: Long ago, she let the love of her life get away. In this case, she had allowed herself to be persuaded by a trusted family friend that the young man she loved wasn't an adequate match, social stationwise, and that Anne could do better. The novel opens some seven years after Anne sent her beau packing, and she's still alone. But then the guy she never stopped loving comes back from the sea. As always, Austen's storytelling is so confident, you can't help but allow yourself to be taken on the enjoyable journey.

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Stevenson has read all of Austen's novels for audiobook, in abridged or unabridged versions, and her experience shows in this delightful production. Though dominated by the intelligent, sweet voice of Anne Elliot—the least favored but most worthy of three daughters in a family with an old name but declining fortunes—Stevenson provides other characters with memorable voices as well. She reads Anne's haughty father's lines with a mixture of stuffiness and bluster, and Anne's sisters are portrayed with a hilariously flighty, breathy register that makes Austen's contempt for them palpable. Anne's voice is mostly measured and reasonable—an expression of her strong mind and spirit—but Stevenson imbues her speech with wonderful shades of passion as Anne is reacquainted with Capt. Wentworth, whom she has continued to love despite being forced, years before, to reject him over status issues. Listening to Stevenson, as Anne, describe a sudden encounter with Wentworth, one hardly needs Austen's description of how Anne grows faint—Stevenson's perfectly judged and deeply felt reading has already shown that she must have. Even those who have read Austen's novels will find themselves loving this book all over again with Stevenson's evocative rendition ringing richly in their ears. (Apr.) This was her final completed novel before her death, and was published posthumously. As is often the case with Ms. Austen's fiction, "Persuasion" deals with the social issues of the times and paints a fascinating portrait of Regency England, especially when dealing with the class system. Rigid social barriers existed - and everyone wanted to marry "up" to a higher station - and, of course, into wealth. This is also a very poignant and passionate story of love, disappointment, loss and redemption. The point Austen makes here, is that one should not ever be persuaded to abandon core values and beliefs, especially for ignoble goals. There are consequences, always.Gillian Beer writes a fascinating Introduction in this Penguin Classic Edition, in which she discusses Miss Austen's portrayal of the double-edged nature of persuasion. This complete and unabridged edition also contains a biography of the author, an Afterword, a new chronology and full textual notes.Sir Walter Elliot, Lord of Kellynch Hall, is an extravagant, self-aggrandizing snob, and a bit of a dandy to boot. He has been a widower for many years and spends money beyond his means to increase his social stature. His eldest daughter, who he dotes on, is as conceited and spoiled as he is. The youngest daughter, Anne, is an intelligent, sensitive, capable and unassuming woman in her late twenties when the story opens. She had been quite pretty at one time, but life's disappointments have taken their toll and her looks are fading. She and her sister are both spinsters. Anne had once been very much in love with a young, and as yet untried, navel officer. A woman who had been a close friend to Anne's mother, persuaded Anne to "break the connection," convincing her that she could make a much better match. After much consideration, Anne did not follow her heart or her better instincts, and she and her young officer, Frederick Wentworth, separated. She has never again found the mutual love or companionship that she had with him. Anne's older sister never married either, because she hadn't found anyone good enough! She still hopes, however, for an earl or a viscount. The Elliot family is forced to financially retrench because of their extravagance. They lease Kellynch Hall to...of all people...Wentworth's sister and her husband. Elliot, his oldest daughter and her companion, move to a smaller lodging in Bath for the season, leaving Anne to pack up their belongings before joining them. She gets the Cinderella treatment throughout the book. Anne decides to first visit with her middle sister, an abominably spoiled, whiny hypochondriac, Mrs. Musgrove. She has made a good, but not brilliant match to a local squire. Her husband, Charles Muskgrove, his parents, and their two younger, eligible daughters, Louisa and Henrietta, are delightful. They all tolerate Mrs. Muskgrove, barely, and adore Anne. It is at the Muskgrove estate that Anne meets Frederick Wentworth again, after his absence of seven years. He is in the neighborhood, because his sister is now in the area, residing at Kellynch, of course. Wentworth is now a Captain in the Royal Navy and quite wealthy. When their eyes meet for the first time, you can absolutely feel Anne's longing and remorse. He is aloof with Anne, although civil. The man was hurtfully rejected once before and it appears that he still feels her snub. Now Wentworth is on the marriage market and Louisa sets her cap for him. Accidents and various adventures ensue, from the resorts of Lyme and Bath to the Muskgrove estate, bringing Anne and Wentworth closer together. The passion between the two is sooo palpable, although Very understated, (this is Regency England after all). I think this is Ms. Austen at her most passionate. Some scholars say that she modeled Anne Elliot after herself. This remarkable novel, and the issues it tackles, is just as germane today as it was when written. And the romance...well, no one does romance better than Jane Austen.JANA

118 of 121 people found the following review helpful. Beautifully written By Amazon Customer This book is one of my favorites of all time. Many people dislike it or don't like it as much when compared to Pride and Prejudice or Emma, but there are many reasons why Persuasion should not be compared to Austen's other novels. This novel was the last one that Austen wrote before she died. It is a more mature novel, dealing with many issues not found in Austen's previous novels. One reason why people find faults with the book is that Anne Elliot, the heroine, is not as spunky or witty as an Elizabeth Bennett or an Emma Woodhouse. There is not so much wit flowing in the dialogue between characters, or even dialogue in general. But these differences between the novels make this one so unique. It is a novel of second chances. Anne Elliot, no longer in the bloom of youth, is a grown woman of 27 or 28 years. Eight years ago she had been happily in love with a handsome man named Frederick Wentworth. But, unfortunately, due to his financial status, and Anne under the influence of her family and close friend, was forced to reject his marriage proposal and they parted ways. But now, he is within her closest circle once again. Circumstances led to Anne staying with her married sister, Mrs. Muskgrove, while her own house was being let to Wentworth's sister and husband. Wentworth visits his sister and on calling on the Muskgroves finds Anne among them. Anne finds Wentworth, not only looking as good as he ever did, but is now Captain Wentworth, who has made his fortune. Wentworth, still angry with Anne over being rejected, causes him to treat Anne very cooly. But over many weeks of contact here and there, you catch on that Captain Wentworth isn't all that oblivious to Anne anymore, because of all the little 'glimpses' he throws at Anne. The tension between the two is amazing. You can sense a connection between the two, even though they are on opposite ends of the room. In Bath, the tension builds and builds until it culminates into one of the most moving and romantic reunions ever. The letter that Wentworth writes to Anne declaring his love is bound to bring a tear to your eye and a pang in your heart. Happily, all ends well, but throughout the novel you can easily sympathize with Anne. No longer youthful and no longer as pretty as she used to be, she is full of self-consciousness and confusion. She still loves him after all those years, but she cannot act upon her desires.Austen, yet again, excels in portraying her characters. Anne and Captain Wentworth are full and delightful characters that one must love. Her descriptions of Anne's vain father and snobbish older sister, Elizabeth, hit the mark on satirizing the members of society during that time. She wittingly describes how everyone tolerates Mrs. Muskgrove's hypochondriatic self and how everyone deals with her in their own way. There is not so much dialogue between characters in this book, compared to Austen's other novels. Most of the book is in observation of Anne's character and feelings, which makes it so much easier to relate to everything that Anne feels and you understand her situation all the more. This is a wonderful novel, with many qualities, differing from those of Austen's previous novels, to enjoy and admire.

86 of 90 people found the following review helpful. My Favorite Book of All Time.... By WIAPilot Over the years, I have read "Persuasion" by Jane Austen at LEAST 10 times. Simply put, it is my favorite book. While not everyone holds this novel with the same high esteem that I do, I urge those who have NOT read "Persuasion" to buy it.This book has meant different things to me at different times in my life. I have often reflected why I find the story so fascinating and believe it is because it so accurately portrays the human spirit and exposes our flaws and strengths with such transparency.Jane Austen reveals those who are so superficial that they see no goodness or worth other than beauty and wealth (Anne's father and sister); those who are so dependent that they do not listen to their own heart - but instead leave their most important decisions for others to make (Anne herself); and those whose pride has been wounded. And perhaps what is so captivating, Austen lets the reader vicariously "undo" an error in judgment. This is an excellent and timeless novel.

The Thirty Nine Steps, John Buchan’s groundbreaking espionage thriller featuring spy Richard Hannay, has been called the first great espionage novel. It has been embraced by each new generation and shows no sign of losing popularity. Richard Hannay arrives in London on the eve of World War I, where he meets an American agent seeking help in stopping a political assassination. Before long, Hannay finds himself in possession of a little black book that holds the key to the conspiracy — and on the run from both the police and members of a mysterious organization that will stop at nothing to keep their secrets hidden. The book has formed the basis for a number of film adaptations, notably: Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 version; a 1959 color remake; a 1978 version which is perhaps most faithful to the novel; and a 2008 version for British television.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Man Who Knew Too Much By Acute Observer The Thirty-Nine StepsRichard Hannay was visiting London in May. He had left Scotland at age six to work and find a small fortune in South Africa. Hannay was tired and bored after a month in London. At his flat a neighbor asked to speak to him in private, and asked for help. This stranger told of his travels in the Balkans and the things he learned about those who stirred up a revolution. Its all due to a conspiracy (money can be made on a falling market). But now Franklin P. Scudder knows too much to be allowed to live. An important foreign leader will visit London. He will be murdered by an Austrian and the evidence will point to Vienna and Berlin. Scudder told how he faked his own death! Hannay believed him, and sheltered him for days. When Hannay returned to his flat he found Scudder stabbed dead. Hannay now believes Scudder's story to be true. But Hannay will either be the next target or be charged and convicted for the murder. Life is no longer dull.Hannay took steps to disguise himself and disappear. He found Scudder's notebook and tried to decipher its coded entries. Hannay must evade the police search and those seeking to kill him. The chapters tell of his flight and the events of his capture by the killers and escape. Buchan describes the country and the characters Hannay met. Some of the words are obscure ("burnside"). Hannay finally meets Sir Walter and learns more. The police will no longer be an inconvenience. There is a new surprise when Hannay returns to Sir Walter's London mansion. Hannay figures out who is the spy, and his method. The next step is to intercept and stop him before he leaves England with the secret information. Of course this story has a happy ending. The 1930s film by Alfred Hitchcock changed very many of the details of this story, so the novel will be fresh and interesting to a reader. Note how a person can simply disguise himself by a complete change of clothes and hat. Dashiell Hammett also mentioned this in his "Red Harvest". People remember clothing better than a face.

British adventure at its best By RJay A bit dated English novel but it doesn't hurt the narrative which is exciting from start to finish. Many of the characters are the classic British types that we in the USA have no comparison. But it doesn't interfere with the story.

By Don Kidwell Very good mystery book complete with a ,British Spies Image Gallery' containing authentic photos of the author, copies of several first edition covers/lobby cards such as Greenmantle, No Man's Land "Sapper" & Bulldog Drummond and more. Always interesting to go back and read the genuine novel on which a popular movie was loosely based (this one being Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 thriller) and I did enjoy the differences between the two along with the bonus image gallery at the close. Well done!

Raison et Sensibilité (French Edition), by Jane Austen

About the Author One of England s most beloved authors, Jane Austen wrote such classic novels as Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, and Northanger Abbey. Published anonymously during her life, Austen s work was renowned for its realism, humour, and commentary on English social rites and society at the time. Austen s writing was supported by her family, particularly by her brother, Henry, and sister, Cassandra, who is believed to have destroyed, at Austen s request, her personal correspondence after Austen s death in 1817. Austen s authorship was revealed by her nephew in A Memoir of Jane Austen, published in 1869, and the literary value of her work has since been recognized by scholars around the world.

Best Ebook Pick 3 Lottery My Top System (Oct 2015), by AANewYork

My Top System Described in Detail I have MANY systems floating around in my books, reports, web sites, blog, etc. but I have ONE "super system" right now. The 7 DAY NUMBERS are based on this system. This is my #1 system as of October 2015. I explain that system in detail in this book. To be honest, I have discussed this system in other books – but I did not go into detail into the two foundational programs my top system is based on: the Reference and Revelation Boxes. In this book I explain these two boxes in great detail. I discuss the three positions (first, second, third) individually and show you WHY the digits in those positions are there…for both boxes. Let me get more specific. In this book I discuss the following topics: •A complete explanation of the Reference Box. •The Revelation Box: The improved Reference Box. •How the digits in the first, second, and third positions are selected. •How the Revelation Box is different from the Reference Box. •The Secret behind my Top System (Very Important). •Where LIST-8 comes from. •The Box Positional Control program. •The Revelation 20, 40, and 60 programs. •The Group Matching program. •Why you should not count numbers with certain programs. •Useful Tips when recording numbers in Word. •Entering both midday and evening numbers. •My Secret Weapon (NEW!) If you pay attention to the 7 DAY NUMBERS, you will notice that THEY HIT. WHY do they hit? WHAT makes these numbers so special? Read this book to find out!
