Set in northern Italy in 1628, during the terrible, oppressive years under Spanish rule, it is sometimes seen as a veiled attack on Austria, which controlled the region at the time the novel was written. It is also noted for the extraordinary description of the plague that struck Milan around 1630.

The Betrothed, by Alessandro Manzoni

Review  “This is not just a book; it offers consolation to the whole of humanity.” —Giuseppe Verdi “[Manzoni is] the only Italian literary figure whom his countrymen consider worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as Dante . . . It is almost impossible to accept this book as a first novel. Through the virtuosity with which its creator deploys and refines his raw materials, the story of Renzo and Lucia . . . consistently transcends its considerable potential for sentimentality . . . The mélange of tones, styles and methods within the book makes the experience of reading it one of the most rewarding—and simultaneously most challenging—in nineteenth-century fiction.”—from the Introduction by Jonathan Keates

One of the very greatest historical novels ever written By Robert Moore Allesandro Manzoni's THE BETROTHED is rightfully considered one of the great novels in Italian history, if not the greatest. It is also one of the greatest historical novels ever written. Manzoni magnificently blends together a score of memorable characters with a string of vividly rendered historical events to provide an epic story of frustrated lovers in Italy during the Thirty Years Wars in the early 17th century when the state of Milan was occupied by the Spanish Habsburgs. The result is a great story placed against the background of a turbulent period in Italian history. The choice of that period of time is fascinating in itself. Instead of dealing with one of the more glorious periods of Italian history, such as the 15th or 16th centuries, Manzoni chose the relatively undistinguished 17th, during a time when much of Italy suffered under foreign rule, while many of the other city states were in a period of decline.Few novels that I know deal with historical topics as magnificently as this one. One has to go to a writer like Tolstoy to find scenes as memorable as the tremendous scene in the Lazaretto in which Fra Cristoforo admonishes Renzo for his desire for revenge, with thousands of people dying of the plague surrounding them. Nearly as powerful is Manzoni's masterful depiction of the bread riots in Milan or the way he describes the progress of the German army in its passage through the region on its way to Mantua. Although one hardly reads the novel for the history lessons it provides, one learns an unusually large amount.I am a bit perplexed as the criticism that the novel contains too much in the way of Christian redemption in the latter part of the novel. Of course it does. As much as an historical novel, THE BETROTHED is a religious novel, in which Manzoni in his own way tries to justify the ways of God to men. If one compares the novel to the historical works of someone like Hugo or other French historical novelists, one will be struck by the sharp divergence in the depiction of the Church and the clergy. In France, an anti-clericalism characterizes many or most of the novels. Manzoni is much more balanced. Some of his religious figures, such as the Nun of Moanza or the Lecco parish priest, are either ridiculous or treacherous, but by and large the great heroes in his book are either monks (Fra Cristoforo), clerics (the Cardinal), or converts (the Unnamed). The theme of the novel is a religious one: "All things work together for good for those that love God." Given the central theme of the novel, the religious themes are not an unwanted accretion, added on arbitrarily by an author otherwise summoning up a tremendous yarn, but integral to the novel as a whole. To dampen or eliminate the religious themes would have been to make it into another novel entirely. Most of all, THE BETROTHED is just a flat out great story. Separated lovers, devious villains, mysterious figures: who wouldn't fall for all this? Manzoni is a masterful storyteller, and frequently one is left with a powerful impatience to know what is going to happen next. Anyone looking for a great novel could hardly hope to do better than this great masterpiece.

A Masterpiece of Historical Fiction By PazzoPerAmore Twenty years ago I went through a graduate program in Comparative Literature and read literally thousands of novels, plays, poems, etc. Of all that I read then, The Betrothed (I Promessi Sposi) is one of the few works that stand out. Scott, Hugo, and other novelists were familiar, but Manzoni was a new name to me then. He has become a favorite companion in the ensuing years. I am currently reading this novel for the 7th or 8th time (lost count). Written with compassion and humor, Manzoni offers an enthralling story of a peasant couple swept up in the political, social and religious turmoil of early 17th century Italy. There are many subplots involving characters of every rank and station, all vividly portrayed. What brings me back to this novel repeatedly are: 1) the author's masterful handling of plot--everything fits and flows (super)naturally; and 2) his ability to capture the beauty, wonder and horror of life in eloquent and moving prose. It is a mystery why this novel is not better known in the U.S.

Most students hate it, but their opinion just doesn't count because for them it is but brutal forced reading. Manzoni's "The Betrothed" can be enjoyed on various levels. In the first place, it is packed with action: there's the good guy, the imperiled damsel, the arch-villain, the saintly friar and various comic characters like the cowardly priest and his spinster-servant. The plot is tipically Nineteenth Century: the loving couple can't get married because the arch-villain gets in their way and starts all the tribulations. On the other hand, the whole plot can be seen as a religious parable (and that is why students hate this book: they are forced to see the whole matter from this point of view ONLY.) on Providence. Thirdly, the book can be seen as an authoritative historical text about the Sixteenth Century. Unlike his colleague Walter Scott, whose Middle Ages look like a Hollywood movie starring Liz Taylor, Manzoni wrote "The Betrothed" after a serious hystorical reserach: almost every episode is historically based and he made use of Sixteenth-century chronicles and laws as a basis for his story's context. On top of this, the characters aren't mere literary creations. They are alive and pop out of every page as living creatures with all their humanity. Everything in them denounces Manzoni as a keen observer of the human heart. I highly recommend this book. Buy it and enjoy it!

Heart of Darkness (1899) is a novella by Anglo-Polish novelist Joseph Conrad, about a voyage up the Congo River into the Congo Free State, in the heart of Africa, by the story's narrator Marlow. Marlow tells his story to friends aboard a boat anchored on the River Thames, London, England. This setting provides the frame for Marlow's story of his obsession with the ivory trader Kurtz, which enables Conrad to create a parallel between London and Africa as places of darkness. Central to Conrad's work is the idea that there is little difference between so-called civilized people and those described as savages; Heart of Darkness raises important questions about imperialism and racism. Originally published as a three-part serial story in Blackwood's Magazine, the novella Heart of Darkness has been variously published and translated into many languages. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Heart of Darkness as the sixty-seventh of the hundred best novels in English of the twentieth century.

Heart of Darkness, by Joseph Conrad

About the Author Polish author Joseph Conrad is considered to be one of the greatest English-language novelists, a remarkable achievement considering English was not his first language. Conrad s literary works often featured a nautical setting, reflecting the influences of his early career in the Merchant Navy, and his depictions of the struggles of the human spirit in a cold, indifferent world are best exemplified in such seminal works as Heart of Darkness, Lord JimM, The Secret Agent, Nostromo, and Typhoon. Regarded as a forerunner of modernist literature, Conrad s writing style and characters have influenced such distinguished writers as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, William S. Burroughs, Hunter S. Thompson, and George Orwell, among many others. Many of Conrad s novels have been adapted for film, most notably Heart of Darkness, which served as the inspiration and foundation for Francis Ford Coppola s 1979 film Apocalypse Now.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Short and Sweet with Tons of Meat By Jenna Rasmussen Reading Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad is a lot like running a 5K (3.2 miles) race. You start out slow and steady trying to get your pace and make your way through the convoluted mess of other racers, but by mile two you’re huffing and puffing and ready to quit because it’s a lot harder than you thought it would be. By the time you hit mile three you think you can’t possibly keep going until finally the endorphins kick in and you realize, hey, you’re actually having fun! Then before you know it the race is over, and you’re left with a sense of wonder and accomplishment at having run the whole thing. Most importantly you take away a new identity of yourself; you, my friend, are now a Runner.Just as a 5K is 3 miles, Heart of Darkness is divided into 3 parts. For me, the first part of the story was initially hard to get into because I found it difficult to adjust to Conrad’s dense writing style, and I found myself confused by Conrad's use of one narrator to begin the story and then the shift in point of view to the character of Marlow telling his own story. I read something about an interview and something about a river boat captain, but few things made sense. By the second part, I thought I was beginning to understand. Marlow’s predicament with his broken down boat and the puzzle pieces began to come together. To grasp the meaning, I looked at reviews and others’ critiques of the story, and I realized I might not be understanding what was going on. I moved into part 3 with a tentative understanding. The plot, muddy and dark, became tinted grey. Marlow finally meets the man I'd read about in pages before -- Mr. Kurtz, a man spoken of with a weird sense of awe. Marlow, this idealist, comes to understand that some really bad things are happening in his world. He wakens to the realities of duplicity and greed and how a wild land can corrupt a man. Emotion seeps into part 3 as Marlow comes to understand. He says, “I was, so to speak, numbered with the dead. It is strange how I accepted this unforeseen partnership, this choice of nightmares forced upon me in the tenebrous land invaded by these mean and greedy phantoms.” Heart of Darkness is about a man, broken by his experience and what he sees and learns in the Congo. To experience Heart of Darkness is to come away asking yourself who you are and what has your life shaped you to be? And just as running a 5K gives you a new identity of Runner, reading Heart of Darkness gives you a new identity of Self.

I had no idea what I was getting into when I bought this on kindle, but after I started reading it I didn't want to stop. Sure it's written back in the 1800's and their writing style was different and this makes it more challeninging to read, but the story is amazing and you can learn a lot from this book and you can even relate it to things that are happening in our world today.

The Little Lame Prince (Xist Classics), by Dinah Maria Mulock

From Publishers Weekly Although based on the Dinah Maria Mulock Craik novel, Wells's picture book retelling is devoid of the sentimental flavor of the original. The comic illustrations underscore the droll aspects of the text which, like the best of Ungerer or Steig, is filled with dry humor and delicious details. A vain chambermaid, more intent on fixing her eyelashes than minding the baby, drops Prince Francisco on the marble floor, causing his lameness. When his parents die soon after, his Uncle Osvaldo, a yellow-eyed porker who swills brandy and smokes cigars, shuts the prince in a tower and wreaks havoc on his peaceful kingdom. Eventually, Francisco's fairy godmother--"with limited powers"--sees to it that he is established as the rightful ruler of El Cordoba, where "no one cares about your legs because your head is wise and your heart is kind." As winsome as Shy Charles and as ebullient as Max, Wells's gentle prince is a charmer. Ages 4-8. Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal Grade 1-3-- In side notes, Wells states that she hoped to adapt a favorite story of her childhood for younger children while keeping the spirit of the original. At this she is not successful. Craik's The Little Lame Prince more thoughtfully presents a coming-of-age story, a coming to grips with both good and evil in the world, and a realization of one's own strengths and weaknesses. Stripped of its action, this adaptation is more like Miss Piggy goes Anne of Green Gables. In fact, the main characters are pigs and the lady-in-waiting who drops the young prince causing his lameness is a silly goose. Taken on its own terms as a story, more parody than adaptation, it's a hoot. Wells' writing is fast paced and humorous, and she never talks down to her audience. Her good-natured illustrations are highly expressive and add additional humor to the tale. Younger children will indeed enjoy the adventure, while older children should definitely be directed to the original for its own special magic. --Judith Gloyer, Milwaukee Public LibraryCopyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

VICTORIAN FLYING CLOAK By A Customer In ten gentle chapters with simple sketches we meet another charming child--this one lame but royal, and an orphan. (Somewhat reminiscent of Old Testament Jonathan's crippled son.) A healthy baby prince is dropped by a careless nurse enroute to his christening; when both his parents die, he is at the mercy of his ambitious uncle/regent who has him secreted away to a lonely tower on a barren plain. (Reminds me of The Emperor and the Kite). With only a female convict as a nanny, the little lame prince grows to boyhood in utter loneliness, until his fairy godmother gives him a magic cloak which he uses to travel on the sly. Not to escape, but to see more of the world, and the kingdom which should be his. But would the people accept a crippled monarch, even if he could escape and denounce his uncle? The cloak has an even greater significance for him, since it provides him with love (reminding him that ONE person cares for him) and hope. Is being a king someday what he really wants for personal happiness? An ingenuous tale which will soften the hearts of modern readers. But probably bore kids of the Nineties....

I felt so bad for this poor little boy who was held captive. Then the world opened up for him as he rode on his magic carpet. His adventures were so realistic I felt like I was with him. I reread this book recently because I had always remembered liking it as a child.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Well done Kindle edition By Amazon Customer This is a book I remember as a child, and was pleased to re-read after so many years. The vintage illustrations add a nice touch. Some aspects of the story seem reminiscent of the Narnia books, and I would not be surprised if "The Little Lame Prince" was among the books on the shelves of a young C.S. Lewis. The vocabulary and style may, however, be difficult for younger readers, perhaps more suited for middle-school students.

I had better explain why, in this little piece d'occasion, written for a performance in aid of the funds of the project for establishing a National Theatre as a memorial to Shakespear, I have identified the Dark Lady with Mistress Mary Fitton. First, let me say that I do not contend that the Dark Lady was Mary Fitton, because when the case in Mary's favor (or against her, if you please to consider that the Dark Lady was no better than she ought to have been) was complete, a portrait of Mary came to light and turned out to be that of a fair lady, not of a dark one.

The Dark Lady of the Sonnets, by Bernard Shaw

From Library Journal CBC Radio has recorded skilled actors of the renowned Shakespeare Festival of Canada reading dramas in front of audiences. The Dark Lady of the Sonnets, a playlet set in London around 1600, involves a palace guard, a quirky Shakespeare, and his lady of the title. A peevish Queen Elizabeth lords it over them amusingly. On the same cassette, a shorter Shakes vs. Shaw has Shakespeare debating George Bernard Shaw about which writer is greater. The author is clever, but these curtain raisers are trifles. Filumena is a worthy production of a popular 1946 Italian classic. For 25 years Filumena, a Neapolitan prostitute, has been the sometime mistress of a stolid businessman from whom she stole money to support her three illegitimate sons. Now she wants to marry him and make them legitimate; only then will she tell him which one is his. The majority of the actors do not affect Italian accents. Brisk pacing keeps this romantic comedy lively. This play, frequently revived in Italy, is recommended for general libraries where drama, especially of foreign origin, is sought. Stephen and Mr. Wilde fictionalizes events in 1882 when Oscar Wilde was in Toronto on a lecture tour. Stephen, his 39-year-old black valet, an illiterate slave until he was 19, uses words like dignified, spontaneous, and modulated. Oscar receives brash reporters at the hotel, one of whom identifies Stephen as a fugitive murderer. This mixture of biography, stock characters, and melodrama lacks conviction. Not recommended. By Marette Stiritz Shaw does a great job of imagining that the "dark lady" is Mary Fitton, a lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth, and of imagining an encounter between Elizabeth and Shakespeare when he slips in to meet Mary. Although Shaw knows by the time that he publishes his play that Mary Fitton is a blonde, this does not take away from his interesting depiction of Elizabeth nor his giving Shakespeare the eloquence he undoubtedly had.

Nasuta A cleverly written play in which Shaw presents his appeal for a National Theater by having Shakespeare appeal to Elizabeth the Queen. One of the main characters that Shaw incorporates in the process is Shakespeare's famous and controversial "The Dark Lady of the Sonnets". A truly enjoyable little sketch of a play.

Stevenson (TREASURE ISLAND and DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE). Stevenson excelled at adventure stories with a slightly dark twist, and this collection of four tales, some of his best, is no exception. The collection contains: THE BEACH OF FALESA, a novella revolving around a British trader on an island in South-West Asia, and the dangers and troubles he gets himself into after marrying a supposedly "cursed" woman. This is a wonderful tale, with twists and turns aplenty; THE BOTTLE IMP, a short story about a young man in San Francisco, who comes a across a small bottle that houses a devil that grants any wish, but at a terrible price. This a modern fairytale, brilliantly written, with three-dimensional characters, and an exquisite sense of place; and the final story is THE ISLE OF VOICES, a short, compelling tale of suspense, magic, and evil, set in a remote island. All in all, this is a hugely entertaining read, featuring some of Stevenson's finest writing. Unmissable. If you like this you might also like: New Arabian Nights by Stevenson, Flower of Scotland by William Meikle, an original collection of speculative tales, and 9 Lives: Stories for Cat Lovers by A. Kale, a collection of truly original tales that span many genres.

Great Story About the South Pacific By Richard In the Bancroft Library at the University of California at Berkeley, California, there are some photographs of Robert Louis Stevenson dating from his time in Samoa. One of them shows Stevenson and a large number of Samoans sitting on the floor of the porch at his home in Vailima, the spaces in front of the guests piled high with Samoan food. This photo shows why Stevenson is one of only three or four white people who understood Samoa and showed this in their writings about Polynesia. One of the three works in Island Nights' Entertainments is "The Beach at Falesa." This collection is worth buying for this story (is it a long story or a short novel?) aloneThe story concerns a trader who is newly arrived in Samoa to conduct copra (dried coconut meat, from which oil is expressed) trading. Another trader is the villain. There is a beautiful Polynesian woman involved, as are fears of local ghosts and spirits, not to mention a missionary and a Catholic priest. As far as I know, I have the odd qualification of being the only person in the last half century to research (in Samoa) and to write a long article about Samoan ghost (aitu) beliefs. It can be found in The Journal of the Polynesian Society. I mention this because Stevenson got all thew material he included about aitu in "The Beach at Falesa" correct, and this represents quite a but of knowledge about Samoans and their beliefs. The Samoan language is correct, too.And I must say that the missionary he describes was a little more intelligent and broad-minded than the ones I actually met out there in the Pacific.Stevenson is a great writer. You won't be disappointed when you read his works.

Island Nights' Entertainments By Stephen Balbach `Island Nights' Entertainments` is a collection of short-stories by Robert Louis Stevenson published in 1893. Stevenson died young in 1894 so this is some of his last works but represents a signal change in his writing style that left some clue to where he was headed had he lived longer. Stevenson was best known and beloved for his Romantic works like `Treasure Island`, `Jekyll and Hyde` and `Kidnapped`. But when he decided to move to the worlds most romantic place, the South Seas, his work took a turn towards realism. Stevenson no doubt thought he was growing up and becoming a more "serious" writer, although some of his contemporary critics at the time thought his realist works were among his most forgettable and that it was a shame he didn't stick with what he was best known for. However what his critics could not see was that realism was soon to morph into modernism through the introduction of symbolism, and Stevenson was already beginning to experiment, at least a decade before Joseph Conrad. I have no doubt that had Stevenson lived he would have been known as a modernism pioneer, he was just on the cusp with stories like "The Beach of Falesa". This represents Stevenson's first realistic story, focused less on the plot than on the mannerisms of society. As Stevenson wrote in a letter to his friend back in England: "It is the first realistic South Seas story; I mean with real South Sea character and details of life. Everybody else that has tried, that I have seen, got carried away by the romance, and ended in a kind of sugar candy sham epic, and the whole effect was lost - there was not etching, no human grin, consequently no conviction. Now I have got the smell and look of the thing a good deal. You will know more about the South Seas after you have read my little tale than if you had read a library."

Jack Holloway found himself squinting, the orange sun full in his eyes. He raised a hand to push his hat forward, then lowered it to the controls to alter the pulse rate of the contragravity-field generators and lift the manipulator another hundred feet. For a moment he sat, puffing on the short pipe that had yellowed the corners of his white mustache, and looked down at the red rag tied to a bush against the rock face of the gorge five hundred yards away. He was smiling in anticipation.

Little Fuzzy, by H. Beam Piper

From Publishers Weekly The extra-solar world of Zarathustra is devoid of intelligent life, or at least it was thought to be until prospector Jack Holloway discovers a race of Ewok-like Fuzzies. But the company that has been exploiting the planet for its resources will lose its charter if sapient life is discovered, so Holloway must find a way to keep the Fuzzies from being foundin order to keep the charter. Holsopple reads in a pleasant, sonorous tone, using one unadorned voice for narration and a series of others for character dialogue. The vocal shifts are subtle but effective, and make the dialogue sound rather like real conversation, rather than simply words being read from a page. Some of the dialogue is a bit silly (Holloway constantly refers to himself as "Pappy Jack" when talking to the Fuzzies), but Holsopple manages to pull it off. The end result is a faithful adaptation of Piper's beloved 1962 classic (a Best Novel Hugo Award nominee) that fans both new and old should enjoy. (Feb.) Worley What happens when an obviously sapient species is discovered on a human colony planet - but the usual rules of thumb used to separate people from animals in law don't apply? In the Federation, there really isn't a legal definition of sapience, just a handy criterion of talk-and-build-a-fire intended to keep greedy speculators, sadists, and other lowlifes from claiming they couldn't tell that an obviously inhabited planet *was* inhabited. Zarathustra is legally a Class-III planet with no native intelligent species, so the Chartered Zarathustra Company essentially owns it outright, and makes a *lot* of money on its resulting monopoly on sunstones, not to mention a long list of assorted exports the CZC extracts from Zarathustra's virgin ecology. Then one day Jack Holloway, a freelance sunstone prospector, comes home to find his door open - and a tiny creature, no more than two feet tall and covered in golden fur, in his shower stall. Being an independent-minded bachelor of a certain age doesn't mean one can't get lonely, and Jack's inclined to let the gutsy little guy hang around. Jack names him "Little Fuzzy", and quickly notices that his new friend is bright. So bright that he doesn't need to be shown things twice. So bright that he can generalize. So bright that he can not only use tools Jack makes for him, but brought some of his own with him.He and the rest of his hunter-gatherer family just don't seem to be able to talk, and they haven't mastered fire yet. The scientists working for the CZC are soon tasked quietly with "proving" that Fuzzies aren't sapient, and when one group tries to "confiscate" the little family living with Jack, there's a tragedy: Leonard Kellogg stomps one of the female Fuzzies to death, and Jack shoots another of the invaders dead. The main conflict, though, isn't the shootout but the subsequent pair of criminal cases, which the chief justice of the planet opts to try together almost in the form of a lawsuit since the resolution of either would prejudice the verdict of the other: Leonard Kellogg's trial for the murder of a sapient being, and Jack's trial (where his defence is that he was attempting to prevent someone else's murder). As Jack's lawyer Gus Brannhard puts it, this *is* a lawsuit, in a way, with the CZC's charter hanging in the balance.Really great story, with a crackerjack legal circus at the end and a lot of Fuzzies throughout (who're much better at having fun than humans are, for all that they're little guys in a very big dangerous world).IRRELEVANT NOTE: Michael Whelan's Fuzzy cover paintings are famous. However, one point that's sometimes overlooked is that the only human in the group on the cover of *this* book - "Pappy" Jack Holloway - has been depicted by Whelan as a likeness of Piper himself.

O'Blenis Although quite short, the fast-paced, truly moving, and often very comedic "Little Fuzzy" is one of my choices for science fiction literature's truly great novels. The wit, the charm, and the brilliant characters will all stay with the reader long after the final page of this first of H. Beam Piper's Fuzzy Sapiens series. Zarathustra is a planet classed as uninhabited, which means the entire planet can be owned by a corporation, which it is, by the Zarathustra Company, which enjoys a high profit by mining the resources-rich planet. One day gem prospector Jack Holloway comes across a member of a previously undocumented species - a tiny, golden-furred little biped who he dubs 'Little Fuzzy', and shortly thereafter encounters Little Fuzzy's family. The fuzzies are cute, adorable, and often hilarious, and they're also quite socially advanced, including in the use of tools they themselves make. Holloway is convinced, and soon some of his human friends are too, that the Fuzzies are fully sentient and entitled to all the rights of any other sentient species.Which means the Fuzzies would be the owners of their own planet, and the Zarathustra Company's deed would be automatically null and void. The unscrupulous Zarathustra Company is determined not to see that happen, at any costs. And thus we enter into a meeting of the science fiction novel, the legal courtroom drama, and an indepth examination of ethics. The book skillfully tackles these subjects seriously without forsaking the fun, playful side of its other main facet, represented so well by the gregarious Fuzzies themselves. I would say that there's heavy corporate satire at work in much of the book, but I belive satire is supposed to be an exxageration of the 'real' world, and sadly, I can see a corporation behaving this way if this kind of thing were to happen some day off in the future. Although the book is often a ride of wonder and fun, things can get very heavy and dark at times, including a plot thread dealing with the death of a Fuzzy. The courtroom scenes are a pinnacle of their type, not just for science fiction but for any novel. An excellent tale; extremely recommended.

Beam Piper and is the first in a series of many books on the fuzzys. The Plot of the book is simple enough, old man finds little furry people, old man keeps little furry people, old man trys to get little furry people recognized as sapient life forms. If you can get past the first 2 pages of scientific mumbo jumbo that has nothing to do with the story the you will be fine. The book is great! I generaly do not read sci fi, but I made an exception for little fuzzy, and you should to!

I had just arrived at Cruden Bay on my annual visit, and after a late breakfast was sitting on the low wall which was a continuation of the escarpment of the bridge over the Water of Cruden. Opposite to me, across the road and standing under the only little clump of trees in the place was a tall, gaunt old woman, who kept looking at me intently. As I sat, a little group, consisting of a man and two women, went by. I found my eyes follow them, for it seemed to me after they had passed me that the two women walked together and the man alone in front carrying on his shoulder a little black box—a coffin. I shuddered as I thought, but a moment later I saw all three abreast just as they had been. The old woman was now looking at me with eyes that blazed. She came across the road and said to me without preface:

The Mystery of the Sea, by Bram Stoker

From the Back Cover When Archibald Hunter comes to Cruden Bay, Aberdeenshire, for his annual holiday, he looks forward to a tranquil few days by the sea. But as he sits by the bridge he is disturbed by a strange vision of a couple he had seen earlier, the man now carrying a small black coffin. Shortly afterwards he discovers their child has drowned. The following day, speaking to a fisherman, he is again confronted by a portent of doom. As he sets out to sea, the other men speak his name - Lauchlane Macleod: the very same whose death Gormala had foretold. But how can this gaunt old woman know such things? Where are these terrible visions, whose force he seems unable to counter, taking him? What is the significance of the pages of cipher which once belonged to Don de Escoban? Can he solve the Mystery of the Sea?

About the Author Abraham (Bram) Stoker was an Irish writer, best known for his Gothic classic Dracula, which continues to influence horror writers and fans more than 100 years after it was first published. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin, in science, mathematics, oratory, history, and composition, Stoker' s writing was greatly influenced by his father' s interest in theatre and his mother' s gruesome stories about her childhood during the cholera epidemic in 1832. Although a published author of the novels Dracula, The Lady of the Shroud, and The Lair of the White Worm, and his work as part of the literary staff of The London Daily Telegraph, Stoker made his living as the personal assistant of actor Henry Irving and the business manager of the Lyceum Theatre in London. Stoker died in 1912, leaving behind one of the most memorable horror characters ever created.

The reader is transported back to Aberdeen, Scotland after the destruction of the American battle ship the "Maine." Here the reader is witness to a consuming mystery involving the supernatural and a world in political upheavel. As usual Stoker's character's shine, particularly the heroine Marjorey. This tell of supernaturarl intrigue will keep you entralled and eager to read more of this wonderful and underappreciated author's work.

"The Mystery of the Sea" by Bram Stoker By Mike Archibald Hunter was spending his annual vacation in Cruden Bay, Scotland when he sees two women and a man walking abreast. Suddenly, he has a vision of the man carrying a coffin and the two women walking behind. Just as suddenly, he sees the three walking normal again. Very odd.As this was happening, Archie was being watched by an old woman, Gormala. She had seen Archie's shocked look at what he had just seen and tells him that he has the gift (if you can call it that) of "Second Sight". This means he can see the future, and that the next day he will find out what his vision meant.Sure enough, the next day Archie finds out that the child of two of the adults he saw walking had drowned. A series of "Second Sight" visions follow including the death of an accomplished seaman by drowning in the often rough Cruden Bay near the rock formations known as the Skares and the vision of a procession of ghosts spanning hundreds of years of seaman who have drowned in the Skares. At the end of this procession is the latest victim who Archie is presently carrying to Whinnyfold after failing to save him. His death was predetermined, and no one could have saved him. As Gormala states: "Am I to wark against the Fates when They have spoken! The Dead are dead indeed when the Voice has whispered in their ears".Archie loves the area around Cruden Bay and is building a house on the cliff overlooking the Skares. One day, he spots two women in trouble and he rushes in to save them. One woman, the younger of the two, ends up being Archie's love, Marjory Drake. Marjory is an American on the run from a Spanish group (the story takes place during the Spanish American War and Marjory, a rich heiress who greatly helped the U.S. fight the war against Spain). To help furnish his new house, Archie purchases an old oak chest from an auctioneer. In this chest are very old, yellowed, papers written in an odd cipher code. Being curious, Archie--and later Marjory--undertake the task of deciphering the code. Once they do, they find that it leads to a treasure buried in the area over 300 years ago by the Spanish Armada.Archie and Marjory embark on an effort to find this treasure and along the way experience the adventure of a lifetime, and find that true love conquers all."The Mystery of the Sea" is a terrific book written by a true master. It may not reach the heights of "Dracula" (which I give 5 WaterTowers), but, it is a wonderful adventure mystery mixing information about ciphers and codes, romance, and the supernatural.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A good example of Stoker's work, with some of his most memorable characters. By Chip Hunter THE MYSTERY OF THE SEA (1902) is a combination adventure, romance, mystery, and fantasy. It is an exciting and engaging story, and is a great example of the quality and power of Stoker's writing. While at times gets somewhat bogged down in peripheral details, it is still one of my favorite overlooked classics.Wonderful characters, including Archie Hunter, Marjory Drake, and Gormala, carry this story. They demand your attention and your admiration, and you can't help but to get involved in their story as they go through the adventure of a lifetime. Marjory and Archie's developing love is subtle but powerful, as the two timid individuals turn into a powerful couple. Archie's obsession with Marjory is realistically portrayed and watching his emotional roller-coaster as he wins her love makes for great reading. Their adventures together to find lost treasure and defeat the evil kidnappers are well told and just plain enjoyable to read. One of the things Stoker is most well-known for is his ability to bring his settings to life with history and local color. This novel demonstrates this ability wonderfully. Taking place on the shores of Scotland during the Spanish American War, THE MYSTERY OF THE SEA is really able to get the reader involved with detailed descriptions of landscapes, climate, local accents, and customs. The political intrigue found here is asumedly an accurate portrayal of the times, with hostilities high between the various powers of the world. One thing that you do not get here is a dose of Stoker's otherwise frequent sexism. While Marjory might not be a 'New Woman' in the strictest sense, she certainly displays many admirable traits such as courage, independence, intelligence, and strength. Besides the obvious Dracula, she might be my favorite character in all Stoker's work.My only real complaint about this book is the remarkable absence of Archie's fantastic ability of 'second-sight' for the middle 5/6 of the book. While I enjoy reading about decoding bilateral ciphers and about the characters' developing love, I really got drawn in by the mysterious powers displayed in the beginning of the book, and found myself missing the unknown for much of the middle part. Luckily, it all comes back towards the ending for an incredibly exciting finish.Recommended for fans of Stoker and fans of well-written adventure/romance/mystery/fantasy.

By Maria Clarke This book is a short but helpful read that stresses the importance of planning and researching. You can blaze through this book in an afternoon and it will absolutely fill you with ideas for creating your own business. Each section also comes with a list of honest questions to ask yourself, from everything about conducting a personal inventory of what you have to start a business to what sorts of human capital you may need to get started. The author also takes the time to suggest various markets you could get into, given your area of expertise, in which you could make a good profit over time. This book is full of useful information that will help you make smart decisions. There are tips in here that even experienced business owners can learn from. Nice presentation of the steps in getting started from idea to legal, to just getting started and growing, with good anecdotes to keep things memorable. After reading, I am confident that I have the skills and tools I need. I highly recommend this book to everyone who is even thinking of opening a business, because it can help you to avoid the pitfalls that can await you.

Along with the tutorial provided in the book, these hints will assist you in identifying the special patterns that will ultimately lead you to the solution. The faster play is achieved by eliminating the initial setup time. Where you used to repetitively scan each row, column and block to complete the easy parts, then enter the candidate numbers in the unresolved boxes, this is has been done for you. This work has been completed to save time allowing you to focus on the more challenging aspects of the puzzle and learning new techniques. There are 30 puzzles contained in the book ranging from difficult to very difficult. These puzzles were selected because they rely on a similar set of advanced techniques to solve them. You will begin to recognize patterns and develop new techniques as you practice these puzzles in succession.

By Joan Young-Santiago I would give this book a 4.5 stars! Well thought out and definitely a action plan you can use. I would only add 4 small points to use in conjunction with this book. 1) Meetups can be a option to find like minded companions you may want to consider as part of your team. Many wouldn't want to get work colleagues involved in something so personal. And family & friends doesn't always give objective feedback & encouragement! .2) Speak with your family regarding the money changes you will use, especially regarding loans, gift giving (Holiday & birthday, special occasion) changes etc.. 3) when you "save" money on purchases (grocery, furniture etc), put that money away. Do not "re-purpose" the savings! And lastly, slip ups isn't a excuse to make a blip become a extended excursion into prolonged debt! And my personal favorite is to be honest about not what you write, but actually do with your money! Good Luck!

As I myself am on the path to being debt free, I've been reading several books. Most say many of the same things, however they are in a novel format. I love how Toni made this into a workbook format. You can actually start the process while reading through the book. Many times we read something, and have to highlight or bend the page to refer back. With the Great Debt Dump, she's done it for us. My favorite part of the book is reviewing the action items and The Power of Community excerpts. These really help to reiterate what was stated during the previous chapter and it gives you a quick guide on what to follow up on. Overall, I loved the book and can't wait to share it with friends and family so that they too can embark upon the road to financial freedom.

If you are seeking direction or guidance, get this book. You will not be disappointed. There's power in numbers and this book talks about working with a community of people who are starting the same journey. Debt Free Divas was the first Facebook group I found when I was seeking support on my own debt free journey. Getting involved with the discussions and posting my own questions helped me deal with my financial debt elephant. If you're really ready to demolish debt, GET THIS BOOK!!!!

I don't understand the one-star review from the lady who complained about the puzzles being pictures... Duh... That's what a nonogram is!! I'd purchase another volume if I could find one! Great little pictures. Some were very funny. The difficulty is about typical for a nonogram book... some were easy, but some took quite a while to figure out

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great puzzles; minor irritations By W. Zachary Langner Pros: Good overall. Great variety of difficulty and size throughout the entire book.Cons: markers and highlighters bleed through pages. Some of the puzzles have too many rows or columns that are just 0.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Too simplistic By Debra Kelly Each puzzle is a picture. Too much time was spent trying to force a picture and not enough into making a good puzzle. These are not difficult. If you want really easy puzzles where most of the boxes are X'ed out at the start then this is for you. If you want an actual challenge then I suggest you look elsewhere.
