Anna Karenina (Russian: «Анна Каренина»; Russian pronunciation: [ˈanːə kɐˈrʲenʲɪnə]) is a novel by the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, published in serial installments from 1873 to 1877 in the periodical The Russian Messenger. Tolstoy clashed with editor Mikhail Katkov over political issues that arose in the final installment (Tolstoy's negative views of Russian volunteers going to fight in Serbia); therefore, the novel's first complete appearance was in book form in 1878. Widely regarded as a pinnacle in realist fiction, Tolstoy considered Anna Karenina his first true novel, after he came to consider War and Peace to be more than a novel. Fyodor Dostoyevsky declared it "flawless as a work of art." His opinion was shared by Vladimir Nabokov, who especially admired "the flawless magic of Tolstoy's style," and by William Faulkner, who described the novel as "the best ever written." The novel remains popular, as demonstrated by a 2007 poll of 125 contemporary authors in Time, which declared that Anna Karenina is the "greatest novel ever written."

40 of 40 people found the following review helpful. Sublime reading By doc peterson Tolstoy's classic Anna Karenina is a masterpiece. If I were stranded on a desert isle, this is one of the books I would want with me. The story is essentially about a woman who leaves her husband for another man, only to come to a tragic end. Yet the main character is not really Anna, but Kostya Levin, almost the antithesis of Anna. And it is this polarization of characters that is one of the sublime features of this novel.The characters themselves are especially an element that engrossed me. While there are a dizzying number of personalities, each lives "outside" of the story as well as within it - that is to say, even the most minor of characters seems to have a life of their own, only dropping in the story to play a small part before going on about their business. Each character has depth - they are much more than characitures of "good" and "evi", showing their humanity in their follies and in their decisions - for both good and evil.Tolstoy has an alternative motive in Anna Karenina, though. The story has a barely perceptable religious tone to it, Tolstoy makes a moral statement about how life should be lived, and what a person's role in life should be in order to be "truly happy". This is the result of an epiphany that Tolstoy experienced while writing the novel - an event that changed his life and eventually estranged him from many of his children.The only problem I foresee readers having is keeping characters straight (as this translation uses names as well as patronymics - meaning "the son / daughter of" as in Stepan Arkadyvitch: Stepan, son of Arkady). Individuals are referred to by name, patronymic or sometimes nickname (Kostya for Konstantin for example.) My recommendation is to write the characters down in order to keep track of them. With this said, I highly recommend this book - the language is beautiful, the plot is riviting, the story line although a bit moralistic is superb, and the characters are vivid and real.

Keyes The Everyman's Library edition of Anna Karenina is the Maude translation, not the Pevear-Volokhonsky translation praised by so many readers. That translation is available in a Penguin paperback and an out-of-print Viking hardcover edition. Amazon erred in displaying the readers' reviews of the Pevear-Volokhonsky translation under the description of the Everyman's Library book.

The best book I've ever read By Rhonda Elkins I get really excited when I read a really good book, and I just finished the most interesting, enthralling, and mesmerizing book I have ever read in my life, Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. If ever you take a notion to read it, don't be put off by it's size or think it's a stuffy old classic written in the 1800s. The story is about the human condition in so many different aspects. This book has many characters, but it focuses on 3 couples in aristocratic Russia in the 1800s. In one couple the issue of continued infidelity by the husband is a question and the realization that the woman is just stuck forever in the situation. The other is a couple that find happiness, but realize life is not completely happy all the time and there's much introspection about life, and then there's the magnificent Anna Karenina that finds herself in a loveless marriage and is swept totally away by Count Vronsky. This is a situation where there is tragedy when sometimes people make choices in life and are not able to live with it. I just can't say enough about this book. All the characters you loved then disliked many times over. I could not wait to get back to it and I was sorry to see it end. I've never been moved so by a book and it is a tragic one. The famous first lines are: "Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." And so it is.I read the free Kindle version and had no problems with it whatsoever. I've read many complaints about different translations and that they were hard to follow. This is not true with this. I had no difficulty reading it at all.The book is a magnificent piece of literature.

Painstaking to read By Amazon Customer Understand that this piece was written before 1920 and I was interested in the subject as historical information about a drug problem that seems prevalent and current. However, the composition was on par with what I would consider a high school freshman essay. The book can not even be referenced as a source because none of it is original data, just the equivalent of a high school paper bibliography citations. There is nothing new here that can not be independently researched and, again, the composition was undeveloped and unsophisticated. It was difficult to read and follow and I found myself just plodding to get through it with the purpose of providing a review for other readers! Not worth the download.

27 of 29 people found the following review helpful. Not at all a bad book By A Customer The title says it all. "Mr. Britling Sees It Through" ... gosh, it's almost a parody of a H.G. Wells title. It's the story of how Mr. Britling makes it through World War One; although I should point out that he never once leaves England nor even, so far as I can remember, his study.Look, I really liked this book, and I wish I could give it a higher rating; and Wells is a good enough writer to ensure that the book has some good things in it (Mr. Britling's "affair" with a theatrically emotional woman is hilarious); but in all fairness I must say that (a) Not all that much happens - I know Mr. Britling has a son at the front, but the resulting tension isn't enough to build a novel out of, and (b) There's something a touch self-indulgent about Mr. Britling's armchair angst, and so as a result (c) Wells sometimes misses the point of his own fable. But if anyone has any desire at all to read this book, I say, give in to it.

On this one he steps outside the science fiction genre and gives us a compelling look into the mind of a man as he and his nation are pulled into war. It's actually very similar to the process I've seen the American psyche going through since 9-11, previously opposed to war, then whole-heartedly engaged, then questioning it.I think this book would be a good choice for history buffs, since it does such an excellent job of showing us how things were during World War I and what the mood was like during that time.Wells himself followed a similar course to his character. His leaned philosophically in the direction of pacifism, but when the First World War began he supported it at first, then after a while he gravitated back to his more pacifistic views.This is an excellent book and I really enjoyed reading. Wells was a wonderful writer and very talented at telling a great story. I highly recommend this book.

A Personal View of WWI By Nash Android This is a surprisingly powerful novel, but not one with aliens or fantastic machines or representations of utopian futures, which are the things for which H.G. Wells is most noted. This is not that kind of book. There isn't a driving plot that requires resolution. It falls firmly into the `literary' genre, exploring how people react to events that threaten to change their view of the world. The event, of course, is World War I, and the story is a personal and very human account of the war's first years, not from one of the combatants, but from a father who provides a broader yet still intimate perspective. When it was published in 1916, it would be considered contemporary fiction. Now, it might be seen as historical fiction.The first quarter of the book sets a scene of tranquil Essex in 1914, relatively untainted by the hustle and bustle of nearby London or by the changes going on throughout the rest of the world. The main character, Mr. Britling, is a fairly well known writer of essays and articles. He is an optimist. He believes in reason and in humanity's ability to exercise good judgment. His worldview is about to be challenged. (I got the distinct impression that much of Mr. Britling was an autobiographical representation of Mr. Wells.)As fiction, this book humanizes the experience of WWI in a way that history cannot. It shows the initial disbelief, denial, outrage, grief, and attempts at rationalization that Mr. Britling experiences. It comments on politics, ideology, religion, and the stupidity and waste of war from the perspective of a person detached enough to observe it rationally while involved enough to experience it emotionally. It's a powerful combination. It stimulates the readers' minds as well as their feelings.I won't summarize the story. Others have done that. If you wish, you can view the Wikipedia entry. One overriding theme of the book is how the characters perform mental gymnastics to adjust the reality of the war with their understanding of the world. Mr. Britling observes that the war is incompatible with the idea of God promoted by the Church, so he imagines a different one, which still allows him to retain his optimism about humanity. In this way, he carries on. He sees it through.I can't honestly recommend this book for everyone, but I would suggest it to fans of H.G. Wells and those with an interest in WWI. I enjoyed it immensely.

A fascinating look at a deeply troubled man By teabag Brooke was most famous in his own time for writing what now look like overblown, sentimental poems and--in the run-up to World War II--romanticized patriotic verse. But he was also known in his own time for being, as some had it, the most beautiful man in England. In many ways and for many years he lived a charmed life. He was educated at an excellent school and then in Cambridge University, where he was the lively, charismatic leader of a group of appealing friends who admired him, visited him, protected him, and stripped off and went swimming in the river. (The fact that the rather repressed Virginia Woolf was one of those who did so, and the fact that upper-class women he was attracted to were willing to pose naked for photographs for him, suggests just how appealing he could be.)And when things were going his way, it was a golden life. But Brooke had no capacity for living comfortably if he wasn't the center of all of his friends' lives. Insisting that none of them fall in love or marry but instead remain perpetually in a Peter Pan-like sexless company was doomed to failure, and it simply never seemed to occur to him that the women whose admiration he rejoiced in might come to know him well and determine that he was too demanding, too unwilling to give, and incapable of romancing one woman at a time (while becoming livid with rage if the young ladies found other men).The most beautiful man in England spewed out astonishingly vile abuse when he was crossed in any way; the diatribes and hatefulness in some of his letters is jaw-dropping. What he seemed to want was not communion with another, or even just plain sex; what he wanted was to be adored and write overblown words of praise to one woman while chasing others, and switching back and forth between withering hatred and statements of love in the same paragraph, or indeed the same sentence.Brooke finally seems to be a child who threw tantrums at any point when he could not get his own way. Since his charisma, class, beauty and modest talent opened many doors for him, and he felt that praise and adoration was his due, he had no resources other than slashing others when they loved elsewhere or wouldn't fall in with his plans and the roles he had mapped out for him.He's an unappealing figure, ultimately; a beautiful man, but a narcissist full of hatred who had a tremendous power to hurt others and little capacity to love. What Rupert wanted was everything; others were not supposed to have autonomy. It's a very sad story of a man who burnt his bridges and caused great pain, despite all of his gifts. And it's a tremendously good read; Jones has done strong research and pulls no punches. We get to see a 360 degree view of Rupert Brooke and, by the end, know him far better than he knew himself.

The handsomest (but most conflicted) young man in England By David Bradford This is a wonderful biography; excellently written, exhaustive, well researched, sympathetic to the subject while telling his story warts and all, intensely interesting and containing a representative sample of Brooke's best poetry. I have been interested in Rupert Brooke since my early teenage years, and have read all the previous biographies as well as his poetry, his published letters, his prose and his travel writing over the intervening years. Anyone familiar with the previous biographies will have recognised that Brooke's was a conflicted character, despite the adulation he received during his life-time and despite, or perhaps partly because of, his famed good looks and his description as 'the handsomest young man in England'. In the year before he enlisted for war, his list of admirers was legion and included Winston Churchill, Asquith the Prime Minister and his daughter Violet as well as Eddie Marsh, Winston Churchill's private secretary. But it has been left to Nigel Jones to clear up the mysteries and to expose the real Rupert Brooke to the cold clear light of day. And the picture he leaves us is of a young man who, behind the charming and beautiful exterior, harboured strongly misogynist, anti-Semitic and homophobic thoughts and feelings. His mental health was unstable and his own ambiguous sexuality seemed to have caused him great internal suffering. It also harmed those closest to him. Woe betide any young woman whom he fancied or with whom he formed a relationship! She was bound to be treated badly and to have her heart broken, often time after time. And he didn't treat his male homosexual friends much better either.One wonders what might have happened to Brooke if he had survived the Great War. Would he have developed into a really great poet? The biographer makes it clear that, apart from the aberration of the popular war sonnets, Brooke had matured greatly as a poet in his last years and that there was clearly the promise of greater things to come. One wonders too if he might have matured as a person and overcome some of his demons, or whether the psychological trauma of that ghastly war might only have exacerbated his already fragile mental health - perhaps the latter is much more likely. Ultimately it may have been best for Brooke, and indeed for some of his long-suffering friends that they were all spared years of further suffering and that blood poisoning granted him the quick and early death that in some ways he seemed to crave.Whatever the case of the person himself, flawed, tragic and confused as he was, it seems certain that the myth of Rupert Brooke, the handsome young soldier poet, who went willingly to die for England in the first year of the Great War will live on for years to come. His memory and the myth surrounding him is assured of receiving a boost in 1915, the centenary of the ANZAC (and indeed the other Allied) landings on Gallipoli, as well as the centenary on 23rd April (the day of Shakespeare and St George) of the poet's own death and his burial on Apollo's own island, Skyros, in the Aegean sea.Interested readers could do no better to celebrate the 2015 centenary than to read Nigel Jones's excellent biography and to ponder anew the life of this essentially sad but beautiful young man.

Indeed, I understand there is a revised edition coming out soon, and I intend to buy that and read it as well. Brooke and his circle were incredibly interesting people.

I would have given it 5 stars but rarely do I give anything 5 stars. This came fairly close though. It reads much like a father, or parental figure would speak to a child. Not in the sense of looking down the nose but loving and downright truthful. A good read that reminds you of what you want to be.

Hall's thoughts on the healing potential of spirituality fit well in that genre even though he wrote this book a century ago. As a physician, his sense of spirituality draws from the natural world more than religion, and for that reason his perspective would appeal to a wide audience. Anyone suffering from anxiety, mild depression, or feelings of disconnection from the world will find gems of wisdom in this compact book on healing the mind. This edition has a few minor typographical errors (mostly words merged together), but it is far better than many the public access e-books I have read in the past.

Fletcher mystery so far, and I'm as big a fan of this prolific writer as his numerous avid readers were in the twenties. Fletcher turned out mysteries to the tune of three a year. But The Middle of Things is as witty, clever and well written as if the author devoted years to it.Richard Viner, "a young gentleman of means and leisure," takes his habitual late walk one night and encounters the body of a murdered man in a dark passageway. From that point on, Viner finds himself in the middle of things. Accused of the murder is an old school mate of Viner's who's gone down in the world. Viner makes it his mission to find the real murderer.He is ably assisted by a bevy of solicitors and investigators -- and most of all by his maiden aunt, Miss Bethia Penkridge. Miss Penkridge is a worthy woman who rings for tea in every crisis, and this book is full of crises. She has a weakness for sensational novels, and her habit of reading whodunits every night has sharpened her powers of deduction to a marvelous degree. These powers will come into play precisely when most needed.The plot offers us a cast of sinister and highly accomplished criminals, a truly noble young nobleman, and a stubborn policeman whose tunnel vision may hang an innocent man. The bookish Viner is an excellent protagonist, almost as clever as his charming aunt. There are quite a few characters who have lived in Australia, which adds an exotic flavor.The many threads of the complex plot come together in the end seamlessly, with a romantic twist as a bonus. The Middle of Things is one of the great classics of Golden Age detective fiction. If you're just discovering Fletcher, this is a good book to begin with.

It begins with the simple premise that "truth is stranger than fiction"; and then goes on to prove it. Well-paced, it does not drag; but moves quickly with our hero trying valiently to uncover the necessary clues to save a former friend down on his luck. An exciting tale, it has just enough twists & turns to make it work & keep "you glued to your seat & the book". I think it is more enjoyable & believable than some of his other work, for example, Dead Men's Money.A cozy mystery, The Middle of Things is not as slow & verbose as many of this time period & yet the details are enough to immerse you in this era of candles, top coats & hansom cabs. I would recommend it to anyone looking for an enjoyable read.And again thanks to Amazon for making thses wonderful old books available to the reading public.

Truth is Stranger Than Fiction By Samantha Glasser A wealthy man named Ashton is found murdered in an alley, apparantly robbed for his jewelry and pocketbook. The police believe they have the killer, a young man who the next morning tries to pawn one of the stolen rings. Viner, however, the man who discovered the body and who is friends with the accused, believes otherwise. It is a quick race to find the real guilty party in order to save an innocent man. But none of the information is completely clear; the victim has a mysterious past and there is no rational motive. His charge, a young girl named Miss Wickham, proves to be of little help and Ashton had no close friendships. It is up to the lawyers and Viner to unravel the mystery that has roots in royalty.Another exciting J. S. Fletcher murder mystery, The Middle of Things keeps the reader guessing until the very end. The story features several Fletcher staples, such as a curious and bored average citizen, a case of mistaken identities, and a believable ending. The style is a bit dated, but it is not so antiquated as to be foreign or difficult. Fans of mysteries and Fletcher's writing alike will not be disappointed.

Wonderful By Jack In an idyllic spot along a flowing river in a pastoral area of England there lived for the most part a a harmonious community of animals. There is, however, a jaunty scamp known as Mr. Toad of Toad Hall. His antics are both a scandal and a beguilement to the other riverland creatures. Mr. Toad' s adventures drive the story's narrative producing most of the action, laughter and suspense. The author has produced a story that is nearly an ode to the beauties of rural England with his masterful and lyrical use of the English language. But Mr. Toad so exuberant, so impulsive, so conceited yet at times so penitent is certainly the fascination that will keep you reading.

Do people still read to their children or even encourage them them to read anything other than Harry Potter and such? The book is the size of a large coloring book and has larger print. They've used a couple of different fonts - one of them they use I find distracting but fortunately it wasn't used too much. Hours of fun to keep your mind sharp.

Chesterton was happy to do some spoofery of the deductive detective genre -- his detectives seemed to depend more on the knowledge of human nature. One good example is Horne Fisher, the star character who solves bizarre little mysteries because he "knows too much... and all the wrong things."The first story opens with a reknowned book critic stumbling across a dead man with his head bashed on. Fortunately Fisher is fishing nearby, and is able to deduce who killed the poor man, when, and cleverly figures out the best (and most theatrical) way to get results.In each story, Horne deals with another strange mystery -- the framing of an Irish "prince" freedom fighter, the vanishing of a priceless coin, a man killed off in the Middle East, an eccentric rich man dies during an obsessive fishing trip, another vanishes during an ice skate, a bizarre dispute over an estate, and most shockingly, a statue crushing his own uncle...Chesterton was a good mystery writer. He could spin up bizarre little crimes (murder, theft, treachery) for a variety of colourful reasons, from the political to purely psychological. "The Man Who Knew Too Much" is a good example of that, and it shows Chesterton veering into more politically-charged territory than in his other mysteries, with the Irish-English conflict, spies and impending war.But these mysteries also have Chesterton the philosopher/theologian/thinker. He writes in colourful, poetic prose ("as if the world were steeped in wine rather than blood"), and has brief moments where Horn muses on human nature."Patriotism is not the first virtue. Patriotism rots into Prussianism when you pretend it is the first virtue," he remarks at one point, as an example. Through him, Chesterton gives us brief little insights into what he knows too much of -- a worldview remarkably simple, but very insightful."The Man Who Knew Too Much" is an odd kind of detective -- instead of the quirky detectives or deep thinkers, Horn is rather melancholy and plaintive, almost tormented by his own knowledge. This comes to a peak in the bittersweet final story, where Horne finds himself in a wretched situation, with shocking results."The Man Who Knew Too Much" is a solid collection of detective stories, but underlying the mysteries are Chesterton's deeper looks at human nature. Corzine If you think you're a cynic about politics (or more precisely, about politicians) you've got nothing on GK Chesterton. This is another of his episodic novels in which a series of short stories that stand alone end up making up one single story with the last one bringing all of the threads together and raising them to a climax and resolution.The eponymous man who knew too much is Horne Fisher. And what he knows is all of the key people of the ruling class in England, the tawdry secrets of their personal lives, and the odd and indirect ways that these deform the laws, policies, and administration of justice in the realm. Hypocrisy and gentlemanly corruption are the air they breathe. He knows that most of what you read in the papers is nonsense. In his own words, he knows "everything that isn't worth knowing."In these eight stories of mystery and crime, Fisher's peculiar knowledge allows him to discover who committed each crime and why. Often enough the criminal must go unpunished lest worse things follow. Sometimes the victim is in fact more guilty than the criminal. The other main character is an honest but naive reporter, Harold March, whom Fisher meets and befriends in the first story. March plays Dr. Watson to Fisher's Sherlock Holmes in all eight stories. Until the redemptive climax, Fisher is a sort of tragic figure, upright, honest and unwilling to participate in the wrongdoing, but also unwilling, seemingly unable, to expose his family and their plutocratic circle.I doubt whether England was quite as rotten in 1922 as Chesterton believed. I'm quite sure that America in 2010 is not. But then perhaps that just makes me the man who knows too little.One way or the other, this is a delightful book and highly recommended.

Similar to the Father Brown books By Jesse Rouse The Man Who Knew Too Much is a collection of eight short mystery stories which reminded me greatly of Chesterton's Father Brown stories, except these were not quite as good. I dislike mystery stories where the main character solves the mystery with the aid of a clue that the reader did not have access too. That was one of the reasons why I really like Chesterton's Father Brown mysteries, because if you pay close enough attention and think enough, you can come to the correct conclusion yourself before the answer is announced. Unfortunately, Chesterton does not write all of these stories in that way (though a few of the eight are), and it makes them not as much fun to read, though they are still very good.In terms of content, Chesterton does a fabulous job of bring up moral issues (for example, do we tell the public the truth about murder if it will be harmful to the public?) in these mysteries, and they really make you think. As always, Chesterton has also intersperced the stories with witty yet deep phrases which also make you think, and if you are an underliner you will find many things to underline.In conclusion, this is a good book, but if I were you, I'd read his Father Brown stories before I read these.Overall grade: B+
